MANHATTAN – Kansas 4-H youth are still going camping this summer, though it may not be the way they have been used to doing it.

Amy Sollock, the southwest regional specialist for Kansas 4-H Youth Development, said the state’s largest youth organization will be celebrating the benefits and traditions of camp on social media during the month of June.

“We’ve been camping at the Rock Springs Ranch (near Junction City) for almost 75 years, and it’s one of our very beloved and time-honored programs,” Sollock said. “We love going to 4-H camp at Rock Springs and the benefits that our kids get from camping at Rock Springs are tremendous. There’s just nothing like it.”

In April, K-State Research and Extension announced that it was ceasing all in-person activities in Kansas at least through July 4. “Like everyone, we were pretty bummed that we would not be able to camp this year, but we understand the reasons why. The health and safety of our participants, volunteers and staff comes first.”

Sollock said the state’s 4-H leaders, like others throughout the organization, got together and developed ways in which they could still celebrate some aspects of 4-H camp and teach the values the experience offers.

“So,” she said, “for the entire month of June, we are going to have all kinds of fun content that we’re going to push out through social media, including some fun challenges and videos to celebrate what summer camp is all about.”

There is no charge or registration needed to follow along on social media, Sollock said, and many of the activities can be done right in 4-H members’ backyards. She urged youth to follow&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Kansas4H" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H on Facebook</a>&nbsp;to be part of the fun, and to share their own experiences by posting on social media with the hashtag, #4HCampLivesOn.

“We are going to have a backyard photography contest, and the state 4-H Youth Council has planned a virtual camp song challenge,” she said. “We are hoping it becomes one of those challenges that goes viral and can provide kids with a lot of humor as we sing our silly camp songs.”

Sollock said plans are in the works to create videos that will be recorded from popular sites at Rock Springs such as the flagpole, campfire circle, water wheel and Palomino horse herd. “There are some cool things in the works,” she said.

Kansas 4-H will offer several outdoor education videos on topics normally taught at camp such as using sunscreen and bug repellants, the importance of drinking water, fishing tips and bike safety. Kansas 4-H will also promote opportunities for service activities in local communities.

“We want to give kids a chance to celebrate what they’re missing out on this year,” she said. “We know that 4-H camp is a favorite activity for many kids each year.”

“We’ve seen some really creative efforts from kids and families, volunteers across the state as we navigate this situation that none of us have ever lived through before. There’s a lot of fun that can be had right in your backyard.”

Sollock also made a prediction: “4-H Camp 2021 is going to be stronger than ever and I don’t think we’ll ever be so excited for a 4-H camping season as we will be next year.”

Kansas 4-H moves summer camp online

2 hospitalized in Salina after Ellsworth Co. crash

JEWELL COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Wednesday in Jewell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Peterbilt semi driven by Scott T. Sell, 50, Hastings, NE., was southbound on Kansas 14 just north of Cedar Road.

The vehicle veered onto the west shoulder. The driver overcorrected. The vehicle entered the east ditch and overturned in a pasture.

Sell was pronounced dead at the scene. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Strong to severe storms are possible overnight. 

Thunderstorms may move across central Kansas from northwest Kansas and eventually dive southeast into the Flint Hills, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

The main impacts are dime size hail and damaging wind gusts to 60 mph, NWS noted.

The Saline County Health Department does not have any additional cases of COVID-19 to report today.

The Health Department continues to actively monitor two cases who are isolated at home. The rest have met the criteria necessary to be considered recovered and have been released from daily monitoring and isolation.

KDHE reported the following in their release and can be found at <a href="http://www.kdheks.gov/coronavirus">www.kdheks.gov/coronavirus</a>:

•A total of 10,170 cases with 222 deaths reported.

•There have been 97,883 negative tests conducted at KDHE and private labs.

•The age range is 0 years to 103 years (median 41 years).

•Phase 3 is slated to begin on Friday, June 5th. All businesses, events, and activities will be allowed to open and mass gatherings will be limited to 50 people or less with still following social distancing recommendations and disinfection guidelines. Phase Out is slated for June 19th.

Saline County Health Officer, Jason Tiller, stated, “For all of this to be successful, everyone has to do their part. Every individual has a responsibility and a choice to do what they feel is right.” Testing rates, COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized, the number of deaths, and our ability to do contact tracing are some of the many things that will go into decisions moving forward. Saline County: No new COVID-19 cases to report

DENVER (AP) — Russell Stover Chocolates has announced that its candy plant in Montrose, Colorado will close seven months ahead of schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

That means that 217 employees will lose their jobs. The Kansas City, Missouri-based company had announced in January that the plant and a Montrose retail store close by March 2021, with operations shifted to Texas and Kansas. 

The process was accelerated because of COVID-19. The plant employed about 400 people when the company first made the announcement. But many employees already left for other jobs. The remaining 217 workers will be let go by the end of August.

Abilene Police Department warns of utilities scam

Brock Abbey, an assistant Saline County attorney, has filed
to run for County Attorney in the upcoming Republican primary election. 

He will face Jeff Ebel in the Republican primary.

Abbey
is a career prosecutor who served as Sherman County Attorney before joining
the Saline County Attorney’s Office seven years ago. 

While in law school, Abbey
was selected by merit and participated in an externship clerkship in the United
States District Court for the District of Kansas. Abbey graduated from Washburn
University School of Law with Dean’s Honors and in the top 15 percent of his
class. 

Before law school, he obtained his undergraduate degree from the
University of Nebraska at Kearney where Abbey was both vice-chairman and
chairman of the university’s chapter of College Republicans. 

Abbey and his wife, Brooke, reside in Salina with their two children.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Kia Rio driven by Jacob L. Luther, 23, Salina, was westbound on Interstate 70 three miles west of Interstate 135

The Kia rear-ended a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Meghan C. West, 39, El Dorado, that had slowed due to a disabled vehicle on the shoulder.

EMS transported Luther to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; 

West, another adult and 3 children in the Nissan were not injured.&nbsp; All six were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

The newest positive case is a male in his 50s recovering at home and has unknown exposure at this time, the health department noted.

The 2020 national conference of that organization was canceled this spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but awards were still given out for both the paper and scholarship competitions at the following levels: Lower (less than 70 credit hours, Upper (more than 70 credit hours, and Graduate. The top three places of the paper competition at each level win a cash award (first, $150; second, $100; and third, $50). In addition, the first-place winners from all levels will have their papers published in the&nbsp;LAE Journal. The top three places of the scholarship competition at each level win a cash award (first, $400; second, $200; and third, $100). FHSU students honored include the following.

FHSU Criminal Justice Club members win top honors in national competition

A Salina man was transported to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) after a motorcycle accident early this morning at the junction of Interstate 70 (I-70) and Interstate 135 (I-135).

Shortly after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Louis Swartz, 35, of Salina, was riding a 1990 Honda motorcycle northbound on I-135 and exiting onto eastbound I-70, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) accident report.

Swartz somehow came off the motorcycle as it exited I-135, but the riderless motorcycle continued down the ramp onto I-70, where it collided with a white 2019 Dodge Caravan driven by James Shanks, 35, of Piketon, Ohio, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

KHP asked the sheriff's office to work the accident with the motorcycle and minivan, Soldan explained.

Soldan said that what caused Swartz to come off the motorcycle is unknown, however&nbsp;a Kenworth tractor-trailer rig was reported to have been involved with the initial part of the accident, but did not strike the motorcycle, according to the KHP report.

Shanks and his four passengers were not injured, Soldan said. According to the KHP report, Swartz was transported to SRHC with suspected minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, the KHP report noted.

The rented minivan sustained front-end damage and the motorcycle sustained damage to its side, Soldan said.

Trooper Ben: Span the distances that divide us

June 2020. How in the world did we get to June? I’ve had many instances lately that made me reflect on the past few months after realizing it’s now June. I have caught myself on more than one occasion asking myself, “Did I really complete that project only a few weeks ago?” or “Did that Zoom meeting really only happen last month?” It all seems like a lifetime ago. 

Since mid-March, I’ve been working remotely, the kids have been schooling virtually and my family has practiced social distancing to the best of our abilities. Our daily behaviors and weekly routines have radically changed. Yet, at the same time we have also stayed on schedule with farming.

While jobs that I completed from home in mid-March, April and even May seem like a lifetime ago, the growth on the farm indicates life is still happening in real-time.

The bees are buzzing and making collections from blooms that have appeared on time just like previous years. Corn planted in April has transformed from seeds below ground into healthy plants gaining height above ground at the same pace as previous years. The wheat is on schedule as it continues to turn from its vivid green into a golden yellow. 

The progress indicates the wheat will be ripe for harvest within the month — an event that happens around the same time every year. The continued growth evidenced on the farm maintains its place in time and space as in years before.

These visual reminders show life continues in real-time as opposed to my perceived warp-speed. 

The field of wheat I ride past on my evening bike rides serves as an anchor which grounds me and helps me recognize that while it may truly seem like a lifetime ago, the world continues to spin at the exact same rate it always has.

While the dizzying time spent in the farm office tackling school and work tasks in March, April and May seem like a blur now, the growth of the corn that my husband planted during that same time period serve as daily reminders we are, in fact, still living and operating in “normal” time. 

I’ve always appreciated June, and I think this year will be no different. The month has always served as a gateway allowing me to recognize, experience and appreciate time. Time where I can catch my breath and enjoy more moments with my kids who are now “home” for the summer. Time where the sunlight is available to enjoy for an extended period, and where I can walk through a field of growing corn and feel the wind while hearing a train whistle in the distance. Time where we can stop, sit and enjoy a meal in the field together as a family during wheat harvest. 

While the world around us may seem to be moving incredibly fast, there are constant reminders time has not changed. Seek out those reminders. Find those things that provide evidence that life continues at a “normal” pace and breathe them in. For me, those reminders are always present on the farm — especially in June.

I’ve had many instances lately that made me reflect on the past few months after realizing it’s now June. I have caught myself on more than one occasion asking myself, “Did I really complete that project only a few weeks ago?” or “Did that Zoom meeting really only happen last month?” It all seems like a lifetime ago. Since mid-March, I’ve been working remotely, the kids have been schooling virtually and my family has practiced social distancing to the best of our abilities. Our daily behaviors and weekly routines have radically changed. Yet, at the same time we have also stayed on schedule with farming.While jobs that I completed from home in mid-March, April and even May seem like a lifetime ago, the growth on the farm indicates life is still happening in real-time.The bees are buzzing and making collections from blooms that have appeared on time just like previous years. Corn planted in April has transformed from seeds below ground into healthy plants gaining height above ground at the same pace as previous years. The wheat is on schedule as it continues to turn from its vivid green into a golden yellow. The progress indicates the wheat will be ripe for harvest within the month — an event that happens around the same time every year. Kansas Wesleyan University announced its spring honor rolls on Tuesday, a listing of 266 students across two separate honor rolls.&nbsp;

Full-time students who accumulated a 3.75 grade point average or better during the fall semester were named to the President’s Honor Roll, while those who posted a GPA between 3.25–3.74 this past semester were selected to the Dean’s Honor Roll.&nbsp;
