In 1985, a Delta Airlines Tri Star, while on final approach into Dallas Fort Worth Airport, crashed when it encountered a severe thunderstorm induced micro burst. The crash killed 128 passengers and 8 crew members. The tragedy played a vital role in the decision to install wind shear detectors at many airports across the country.
In 1954, severe thunderstorms reportedly pummeled parts of north-central Kansas with golfball sized hail for around 30 minutes. One hail drift reportedly measured 200 feet long, 70 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. No further details were provided.
