KDOT announces approved July bids

The Kansas State Fair is adding an open class and a 4-H poultry show to its schedule of livestock events slated for September.

While there will not be a 2020 Kansas State Fair, fair officials announced in mid-July they would continue to have livestock shows in an effort to showcase the months of hard work and determination of both Kansas youth and open-class exhibitors. Poultry will be added to the species of animals to be exhibited.

The “Special Edition” livestock show will be spread across three weekends starting Sept. 4. Event rules have been modified to maintain a safe environment.&nbsp;

The 2020 revised livestock schedule includes the following.

Sept. 4-6: Open class poultry, swine, boer goats and sheep; 4-H poultry.

Sept. 11-13: Kansas State Fair Grand Drive, a premier 4-H and FFA livestock show sponsored by Midwest Ford; Wild Horse Youth Challenge.

Sept. 18-19: Open cattle and dairy shows, 4-H horse show.

The 2020 schedule features events Fair staff can execute safely while still maintaining a quality show, said Jenn Galloway, the Fair’s competitive exhibits director. She added the Fair has implemented preventative measures and is following all state and federal guidelines.

•Masks are recommended if visitors can’t maintain physical distance.

•There will be no standing or congregating by the ring - exhibitors and their family should sit in the bleachers or watch the show via Walton Webcasting.

•The event is private. Exhibitors must purchase wristbands to enter barns.

Registration for all open-class shows and 4-H poultry ends Aug. 15.

Kansas State Fair adds poultry shows to Sept. livestock events

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department has reported two new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 137.

Information about the latest cases, as provided by the health department, is as follows.

Positive case No. 136 is a symptomatic male in his 20s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 137 is a symptomatic female in her teens with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Of the 137 total cases, 115 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines, the health department noted. If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

At 2:15 p.m. CDT, law enforcement reported heavy rain falling across the warned area. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring.

Law enforcement has reported that Frontier road between Clifton and U.S.        Highway 24 is closed and roads in Morganville are flooded.

IMPACT: Flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low lying areas.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Clay Center, Clifton, Morganville, Green, Vining, Oak Hill, and Idana.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area.

ABILENE -- A conversation with veteran journalist Chris Wallace is the next scheduled program in the Eisenhower Library's Evenings at Ease series.

A Salina man was injured when he was hit while attempting to cross South Ohio Street Wednesday night.

Patrick Lynch, 70, of Salina, was attempting to cross South Ohio Street toward the northwest when he was struck by a 2008 Ford F250 pickup that was making a left turn off of Albert Avenue onto South Ohio Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, he noted. According to Forrester, the pickup was driven by Jeffrey Colile, 54, of Salina. 

Lynch was not attempting to cross South Ohio Street in the crosswalk at the intersection, Forrester added.

Lynch, who sustained a cut to his head, complained of back pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester noted.

MANHATTAN – The leader of the Kansas 4-H program said that looking at the organization’s past is one way that it will overcome the challenges it has faced the past several months.&nbsp;

Like so many other groups,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;had to adapt its programs quickly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only recently – July 5, nearly four months since much of the United States first closed down – has the organization been given a green light to resume some in-person activities.&nbsp;

Wade Weber, the state leader for Kansas 4-H, said two showcase events – the county and state fairs – are examples in which youth and families have had to adapt quickly. &nbsp;

“We have a rich history of young people being involved in their community, and learning to work together to be problem solvers, innovative and creative,” Weber said. “We’ve always worked to expand opportunities for young people to belong to their local 4-H program, all the way back to our beginning in 1905.”&nbsp;

Weber cited a familiar quote from the state’s first 4-H leader, Otis Hall, who said:&nbsp;“We're not trying to make farmers out of all these youth. We don't care how many hogs or cabbages they raise; it's the youth we're interested in. We're trying to build self-reliance, good judgment and character. For many, 4-H is a stepping stone for those larger life skills.”&nbsp;

Hall, who created the&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/what-is-4-h/4-h-pledge/" target="_blank">4-H Pledge</a>&nbsp;that is recited in every club across the country, led Kansas’ program during stressful times: World War I and the 1919 Spanish Flu pandemic. Weber said today’s 4-H leaders, volunteers and youth can benefit from his wise words.&nbsp;

“I think it really speaks to us 100 years later about the resiliency they were developing, and how they were trying to develop young people,” he said. “I think it’s something for us to be encouraged by as we think about moving forward.”&nbsp;

Weber said Kansas 4-H members and volunteers can also draw strength from another former leader, Glenn Busset, who helped steer the program through turbulent times in the 1960s and 1970s. Busset believed that empathy and drive are two critical elements when times are tough.&nbsp;

“Empathy is the important central ability to feel as the other person does. Drive is the energy to want to do something,” Busset said. “There must be a delicate balance between empathy and drive. Too much empathy with too little drive will lead to little accomplishment. Conversely, too much drive with too little empathy will often bulldoze and harm others in pursuit of accomplishments in order to fulfill their own ego.”&nbsp;

Weber called Hall’s and Busset’s wisdom “timeless phrases” that are important for today’s 4-H programs. “I think they help to put us in a great position to think about the challenges we have in 2020,” he said. “I think right now is a great time to think about where we want to see ourselves moving, and then help each other along.”&nbsp;

Weber listed three ways that Kansas 4-H can focus on as it moves forward:&nbsp;

Be flexible, adaptive and resilient in working with youth, family and volunteers. “Engagement is key; we can’t abandon them.”

Be authentic in learning from and serving communities and families who are different from our own experience. Expand the circle of belonging in 4-H.

Create a better blend of in-person and distance learning opportunities, which can lead to career and college-ready skills.&nbsp;

“Those are the three things that I think are really key to our future,” Weber said. “A lot has been learned and done, but there is a lot left to learn and accomplish. In reality, this era is ripe for innovation, confidence building, excellence, belonging, and intentionality pursuing our 4-H mission.”&nbsp;

State 4-H leader looks to past in forging future 

ABILENE -- Memorial Health Foundation is adding a public walking path to the south side of the Memorial Hospital campus, thanks to two grants.

The foundation recently received a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Implementation Grant in the amount of $40,070.15 and a $5,000 Community Spaces Grant from the Union Pacific Foundation to help with the construction of the walking path.

Several years ago, Memorial Health System (MHS) CEO, Harold Courtois, signed a pledge to "affirm our commitment to taking on new opportunities that provide greater access to healthy lifestyles for our patients and employees. We believe it is our responsibility and our duty as a health care organization to improve the lives of the population we serve, and encourage strong community norms for healthier living. We are willing to learn more about making healthy environment and healthy policy changes to help all employees, patients, and community members live longer and better quality lives."

“The Quality of Life Coalition (in Abilene) deserves the credit for bringing the Pathways grant to Dickinson County,” MHS Director of Community Affairs and the Foundation, Kim Stivers said. “They have been wonderful to work with, and I know there are many business and organizations in the community who have and will continue to benefit from their work.”

The Union Pacific Community Spaces Grant was a bonus for the project, “I knew the Union Pacific Foundation was accepting grant applications, and after reviewing the criteria, I felt like it was a great fit for what we had been working on through the Pathways grant. We are just so thankful for the opportunity to bring a new location for walking and exercise to our community.”

“We are very excited to get the walking path constructed,” Courtois said. “It’s a beautiful lot, in an excellent location, and we hope the community embraces it, uses it, and helps us to continue to make it a beautiful destination for healthy community activity.”

Memorial Health System is nestled in a quiet neighborhood on the east side of Abilene. There are many homes in the area, and very few sidewalks. Memorial Health System, through a work site wellness plan, encourages staff to get up and move during the day. “This walking path will provide a safe place for the community, employees and patients to walk and get exercise,” Stivers, said.

The funds from the Pathways and Union Pacific grant will be used for phase one of the concrete and construction of the walking trail. Phase one consists of the main loop of the trail, and one ADA accessible ramp for entrance to the lot and trail. As more funds become available, additional walkways, landscaping, and visitor enhancements will be added. Memorial Health Foundation will provide an additional $7,000 from donations to the walking path project, and plans to continue to raise funds through donations, grants, and memorials to fund additional enhancements for the area.
