A car stolen from South Simpson Road last weekend has been recovered in New Mexico.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that the light blue 2004 Buick LeSabre valued at $1,500 and belonging to Kajsa Erickson, 31, of Solomon, was located behind a Chevron station in Albuquerque, N.M., on Wednesday. He said Albuquerque police reported to the sheriff's office that the car had been sitting behind the station for a couple of days before police were called to check on it.

Soldan said it was not clear whether all of the items that were in the vehicle at the time it was stolen from the 2900 block of South Simpson Road are still there as an inventory of the contents had not yet been reported.

SFD announces promotion of Sprague

ELLSWORTH – An Ellsworth man has been sentenced to more than 40 years in prison for convictions on four child sex-crime related charges, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.

Karl Van Nice, 59, yesterday was sentenced by Judge Carey Hipp on two counts of rape, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated sexual battery. Van Nice was convicted by jury trial in February. In addition to the prison term, he is subject to lifetime post-release supervision and lifetime sex offender registration.

The crimes were committed between September 2015 and January 2016. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the Ellsworth Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Will Manly of Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case.

K-State Research and Extension is offering a free, educational Medicare Basics: New to Medicare workshop online Sept. 15.

The workshop, conducted via Zoom, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15.

Learn the basics of Medicare, including eligibility, how and when to apply, costs, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Programs available to assist low-income individuals will also be discussed. Anyone interested in learning more about the Medicare maze would benefit from the program, particularly those who are nearing age 65 or who help aging parents with insurance and financial matters.

Multiple offices, facilities closed on Labor Day

OCCK Transportation has announced the upcoming re-launching of KANcycle, the regional bike sharing program that serves north central Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANcycle has been closed since the end of March because of COVID.&nbsp;&nbsp;The relaunch is planned for Sept. 11.

KANcycle, a program of OCCK Transportation, was started in June of 2019 with 80 bikes spread across 16 stations in eight counties with the following locations:

●Cloud County Community College, Concordia

All locations will still be in existence.&nbsp;&nbsp;Customers will now need to use the Movatic app to access the bikes.&nbsp;

“We are so excited to bring the bikes back online.&nbsp;&nbsp;We know that people across all of the communities have been missing riding the bikes.&nbsp;&nbsp;2020 has been an interesting year for all of us,” said Michelle Griffin, director of mobility management for north-central Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We are looking forward to many years of a great partnership with Movatic and north central Kansas with KANcycle.”

Riders join the program by signing up for annual memberships or pay-as-you-go.&nbsp;&nbsp;Annual memberships will be $30 with trips under 1 hour being free, student annual memberships will be $20 with trips under 1 hour being free, and pay-as-you-go will be $1.50 every 30 minutes.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, the state’s largest health insurer, is making another contribution to provide bikes and marketing support for the second year of the KANcycle program, with the intention of helping the program grow in coming years.

“For over 75 years, we’ve made helping Kansans lead healthier lives one of our top priorities,” said Virginia Barnes, director, Blue Health Initiatives. “Bike share encourages both active living and provides a means for community members to access resources they need to stay healthy. Hutchinson's Apron Strings Kitchen Store is expanding to 143B South Santa Fe Avenue with an anticipated opening on Oct. 1, owner Anne Dowell told Salina Post.

"We are a kitchen store that carries quality cookware, tools and gadgets, and appliances. Our staff is trained to answer cooking questions and help find the appropriate tool for your needs. We are a great store for practical gifts for everyone from the home cook to the trained chef," she said.

"We pride ourselves on quality merchandise at fair prices. We will have an array of brands including Le Creuset, Staub, DeMeyer, Vitamix, Cuisinart, Bosch, Zwilling, Wusthof &amp; Henckel," Dowell added.

The original Apron Strings opened in downtown Hutchinson in 2008. So why expand to Salina?

"I see Salina as a great opportunity in a thriving community. We were able to work with quality developers that made the decision easy for us. We have many great customers that currently drive to Hutch often to shop our store and we want to make it easier for them," Dowell explained.

Additionally, Dowell said that downtown Salina location was a good fit for Apron Strings.

"We like the downtown community vibe. We are a unique store and fit well with other boutiques. Strip malls and big box stores aren’t our thing," she said.

"We strive to provide a fun experience with unique tools and gifts. We try to give our shoppers the attention and advice they need when shopping for cookware, cutlery and appliances. We are a privately owned small business and our goal is to develop relationships in the community," she said.

Dowell said that with the scheduled grand opening on Oct. 1, there will be grand opening events through Oct. 10.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department has reported four additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 209.

Following is information on the most recent cases, as provided by the health department.

●Positive case No. 206 is a symptomatic female in her 30s with unknown exposure.

●Positive case No. 207 is a symptomatic female in her 70s with unknown exposure.

●Positive case No. 208 is a symptomatic male in his 20s with unknown exposure.

●Positive case No. 209 is a symptomatic male in his 50s with unknown exposure.

Of the 209 total cases, 187 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines and three of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

McPherson County reports 4 new cases of COVID-19

Rolling Hills Zoo has released the results of the necropsy on Luka, the tiger cub that died in late August.

The preliminary findings by K-State
during the necropsy on Luka, one of three cubs born at Rolling Hills Zoo, found
that Luka suffered from subaortic stenosis, a serious condition that obstructed
the flow of blood from his heart’s left ventricle.&nbsp; This serious condition was likely congenital
and may have been present from birth.&nbsp;


Further testing revealed that he had also contracted feline calicivirus,
a virus that can cause upper respiratory problems and oral disease in cats.&nbsp; Since he was being examined for poor appetite
and a possible oral pain, this would explain the causal agent, the zoo noted.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State also tested for the SARS-COVID-2
virus, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, and the results were negative.

The zoo is continuing
to monitor Luka’s siblings, Nadya and Sasha, and his parents, Andrea and Dhenuka,
for calicivirus, and will administer supportive care if needed. Currently the tigers are behaving, eating and
drinking normally.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. The Organizational Project Grants, along with the Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants, are now open for application, with a deadline of Nov. 2, 2020, according to information from SAH. These grants support artistic growth through Saline County’s cultural and nonprofit organizations and practicing artists.  

The Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants (up to $2000, requiring a 1:2 match) are available to any visual, performing, literary and interdisciplinary artist who has demonstrated seriousness to an art form, but who has not yet firmly established a career as a full-time practicing artist. Artists living in Saline County for at least one year and who are 18 years or older are eligible to apply. 

The purpose of the Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grant, according to SAH  is to:

●strengthen the ability of artists to build partnerships

●implement a public component to engage the community

Organizational Project Grants (up to $6,000, requiring a 1:1 match) provide support for projects that place the arts at the heart of community development, to build community through the arts.

The grant-application deadline is Nov. 2, 2020, in either category, for projects that will occur during the 2021 grant cycle (Feb. 1-Nov. 30, 2021.) All new applicants for the Developing Artist or Organizational Project grants must schedule a meeting with SAH staff no later than Sept. 21, 2020. All returning applicants must notify SAH staff by Oct. 5, 2020, of their intent to apply.

Additionally, Horizons Enrichment Grants (up to $500) are available on an ongoing basis, with applications submitted six weeks before the beginning of the proposed project. For budgetary reasons, Horizons Enrichment Grants will not be awarded Dec. 1, 2020, through Jan. 31, 2021.

UPDATE: Dickinson County has provided an update on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Dickinson-County-Kansas-183363591711637/">Facebook page</a> in the form of answered questions in response to the county election officer's plan to mail to all registered voters advanced ballot by mail applications. Following is that update.

To clarify some of the questions received regarding the upcoming election:

Advance Ballot by Mail is not a new process. This has been done for numerous elections and is an option for all registered voters. The only thing that has changed this election with Advance Ballot by Mail is that every registered voter will receive a request form in the mail instead of having to formally request one from the County Election Officer. This is due to the current COVID situation. You, as a registered voter. still have the option to vote in-person at the Courthouse by advanced vote or at the polls on Election Day.

In response to the question on the ability to vote more than once, there are checks and balances in place. If a person requests a mail-in ballot and that ballot is received by the Election Officer, they are marked in the poll books as received before poll sites open on Election Day. If that person were to show up at a polling site, their name would be flagged that they have already voted. Any mail in ballot request is also verified by the Driver's License number listed and signature on file.

Due to the current COVID situation, the County Election office will be sending advance ballot by mail applications to the registered voters of Dickinson County within the next 2 weeks. This does not mean you must vote by mail, this is an option if you do not want to vote in person. There is a ballot drop box by the south entrance to the courthouse where you can drop off your ballots after hours or on weekends.

Early voting in person will still take place in the County Clerk’s office beginning October 14 and the regular polling locations will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

If you have moved or changed your name, you must re-register to vote at your new location by October 13 to be eligible to vote in the November 3 Election.

Seasonal temperatures are expected today, with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s, NWS noted.

For the Labor Day holiday weekend, high temperatures will be slightly above normal in the lower to middle 90s, NWS noted. Expect sunny skies Saturday through Monday. According to NWS, Sunday will be breezy. There will be a chance of late night storms Monday night, NWS added.
