The Salina Art Center is celebrating the final First Friday of the year by giving the public more time to see three exhibitions by five artists.

On Friday, the Salina Art Center, 242 South Santa Fe Avenue, will extend its gallery hours to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Guests can explore exhibitions including In Range by Jennifer Ray, The Spaces Between featuring Robert Bubp, Lynn Benson, and Tim Stone, and Hoping You Are Well by Rachel Epp Buller.

Additionally, Epp Buller is the artist-in-residence through Dec. 20. Hoping You Are Well is an installation that is a direct response to the sudden changes in the way we engage with art and museums forced upon us during COVID times. During her residency, Epp Buller will be secluded with her work in the South Gallery, the only connection with the artist will be through letter writing. Viewers are invited to write letters for the project.

"We invite you to write a letter about a time you felt cared for by someone else and deliver them to Rachel while she is in residence," the art center noted in a news release. 

Letters can be dropped off in person at the art center during public hours, written from the ARTery from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, or mailed to the following address:

A bus driver was cited for failure to yield after colliding with a UPS truck Tuesday morning in north Salina.

Jerald St. Clair, 71, of Salina, was northbound on North Fourth Street in a 2012 Thomas Built bus when he failed to yield the right of way at an uncontrolled intersection to a UPS 1996 International DS tractor truck driven by David Knott, 25, of Salina, that was westbound on East Hamilton Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The accident occurred at 11:30 a.m.

The bus also was occupied by an adult male and five juvenile passengers, Forrester noted.

The bus sustained front-end damage and was removed by the driver and the truck sustained front-end damage and had to be towed, Forrester explained.

As the countdown to Christmas officially begins, the hustle and bustle of the season already has a different feel from holidays past. My family has decided that since our celebrations will be radically different — void of hustling across the Midwest and attending multiple family gatherings — we will slow our other traditional hustle and bustle as well. &nbsp; For my family, who generally completes Christmas shopping in a mad dash just days before Christmas, we have already started squirreling away gifts for loved ones. Similar to that extra package of toilet paper I’ve routinely added to my grocery pick-up orders since last spring, we’ve actually done quite a bit of gift planning and early purchasing this year. &nbsp; My husband and I have decided that all of our Christmas shopping will conclude by the end of this week. We’ve been quite intentional this year with gifting decisions. Supporting more local businesses, ordering items from stores offering curbside pick-up services and placing orders with Kansas producers who ship their products. &nbsp; I have found myself utilizing Shop Kansas Farms on both Facebook and through their website at&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=31bed5a32b&amp;e=fdf81b035c" target="_blank">www.shopkansasfarms.com</a>&nbsp;to see what kind of goodies I can find to share with loved ones this holiday season.&nbsp; &nbsp; The concept of Shop Kansas Farms is quite simple: providing a direct link between consumers and Kansas farm and ranch families who sell meat, dairy, veggies and other homegrown products. It’s been so fun to search through the interactive map of Kansas highlighting the people offering great products from their farms and ranches.&nbsp; &nbsp; The list is quite impressive and goes well beyond meat, milk and eggs. From pork rinds to popcorn, cheese curds to jams, beef, pork or lamb sticks to farm-roasted coffee, there’s so many goodies to find to make the perfect gift box to deliver to loved ones near or mail to loved ones afar. &nbsp; It’s been enlightening for me to see so many farm and ranch families get creative with their marketing strategies, and how so many producers have pivoted the way they get their goods to consumers or have partnered with other producers to offer more options. It’s also been so fun to see how consumers view these interactions with farm and ranch families.&nbsp; &nbsp; People are connecting with others and learning about their neighbors. Kansans are supporting Kansans by placing orders and making product recommendations. Relationships are being built, and it’s all being done online during a time where practicing social distancing is needed.&nbsp; &nbsp; While many families like mine have decided to keep it simple this year and to resist the traditional hustle and bustle of the season, it’s so good to know that while we won’t be together in person, our family that’s scattered across the country can still receive our love through our hand-picked selections of local products that are grown and produced on Kansas farms and ranches just like mine.&nbsp; &nbsp; It’s a gift of love from Kansas I plan to continue to give well after we can once again gather with those whom we will dearly miss this year.

The City of Salina has announced that repair work has begun on the Iron Avenue Bridge.

Reece Construction began work Tuesday to repair the west side expansion joint of the Iron Avenue Bridge over the Smoky Hill River, according to a news release issued Tuesday afternoon by the city.

Lanes will be narrowed and traffic will be shifted to the northern side of the bridge with cones and delineators. Please slow down and proceed with caution thru the work zone.

Weather permitting work on this side of the bridge will be completed by Friday. Work on the east side expansion joint will be continued at a later date.

Interested individuals will be issued FREE permits to cut USACE marked trees in designated areas that are in need of forest management as well as removing undesirable trees.  Species available for cutting are, but not limited to, mulberry, elm, ash, and locust.  Cutting areas will be accessible by vehicle and are located throughout USACE Kanopolis public lands.  

Selective thinning improves overall forest health and encourages growth of desirable native trees.

Firewood cutting of standing trees outside of this free permit program is prohibited.

Need firewood? USACE might have an option for you

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Tuesday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Cindy Lou&nbsp;Erickson, 55, Chester, NE. was northbound on U.S. 81 four miles north of Concordia.

The&nbsp; driver swerved to avoid a southbound 2005 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Tanner Hatten&nbsp; Gilbert, 23, Concordia,&nbsp; that was going to make a right turn onto Wagon Road. The van traveled&nbsp; into the east ditch and struck an embankment.

EMS transported&nbsp;Erickson to the Cloud County Health Center.&nbsp;Gilbert was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Tuesday in Cloud County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Cindy Lou&nbsp;Erickson, 55, Chester, NE. was northbound on U.S. 81 four miles north of Concordia.The&nbsp; driver swerved to avoid a southbound 2005 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Tanner Hatten&nbsp; Gilbert, 23, Concordia,&nbsp; that was going to make a right turn onto Wagon Road. The van traveled&nbsp; into the east ditch and struck an embankment.EMS transported&nbsp;Erickson to the Cloud County Health Center.&nbsp;Gilbert was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.

Plan on slippery road conditions, NWS noted. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. Reduced visibilities may occur from moderate snowfall rates and winds gusting as high as 25 mph.

Additionally NWS in Wichita moved McPherson County from a winter storm watch to a winter weather advisory. That advisory is in effect from noon Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, NWS noted.

Remainder of 2020-2021 in-person concert season canceled

The Salina Symphony won't let the pandemic hinder its ability to spread holiday cheer.

The symphony announced today that it will present a Christmas Virtual Chamber Concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 13. The concert will be premiered and available for viewing on Facebook at no cost.

The program will feature holiday favorites and cherished songs of the season by nine different Salina Symphony ensembles. Dancers from Tamara Howe School of Dance and Salina Community Theatre’s Iron Street Dance Company will be featured on a number of pieces, according to information from the symphony.

The pandemic did, however, force the symphony to cancel the remainder of its 2020-2021 in-person concert season, including the Rodgers and Hammerstein concert that had been postponed to March 28, 2021.

Single ticket holders for the Rodgers and Hammerstein Concert may request a donation receipt or symphony gift certificate by calling the symphony office at 785-823-8309. To request a refund, patrons may call the Stiefel Theatre box office at 785-827-1998 from noon-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In lieu of the full-scale concerts at the Stiefel Theatre, the symphony will continue to offer virtual chamber concerts through the winter months and plans to present two outdoor chamber concerts in the spring.

“We look forward to inviting patrons to hear our string chamber orchestra and several small ensembles play in person,” said Adrienne Allen, executive director. “We are also hopeful that we will be able to gather for our Symphony at Sunset concert June 5th at the Eisenhower Presidential Library.”

In addition to the Christmas concert, the symphony also has scheduled two other virtual concerts on Jan. 24 and Feb. 21.

“Despite this temporary disruption, we remain focused on fulfilling our mission and finding ways to safely share music with our patrons,” said Allen. “We are also thrilled to be planning for the 2021-2022 season and anticipate along with our musicians, patrons and community the excitement of the Music Director Search Season.”

City of Salina seeks volunteers for boards, commissions

A Monday afternoon trash burn that got out of control was back under control fairly quickly, but not before causing $9,500 worth of damage.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that first responders were sent to 200 South Simpson Road at 1:32 p.m. Monday for the report of a trash burn that had gotten out of control and spread to a short grass field and on to neighboring property. Firefighters from Rural Fire Districts 5 and 7 had the blaze under control by 1:57 p.m., he added.

Rex Ryser, 71, who had a burn permit, was burning trash on his property, but the fire got away from him, Soldan said.

As the fire spread, it caused $8,000 worth of damage to a 25'x20' utility shed at 238 South Morris belonging to Jeff Wells and $1,500 worth of damage to a 5'x12' utility trailer at 3832 East Country Club Road belonging to Corey Haden, according to Soldan.

Ryser was cited for violating the wind provision of the burn permit, Soldan explained.

Trash burn gets out of control, causes $9,500 worth of damage

A local newspaper's car that was stolen earlier this week has been located and a Salina man arrested.

On Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported that a blue Ford Focus valued at $1,500 and belonging to the Salina Journal was stolen from a parking lot at 621 North Santa Fe sometime between 8:30 a.m. Sunday and 4:35 a.m. Monday. The keys were left in the driver's side door, he noted.

Forrester reported this morning that an officer spotted a light blue Ford Focus driving in the 1000 block of East Iron Avenue at approximately 6:15 p.m. Monday. The car pulled into the parking lot of Taco Bell, 1040 East Iron Avenue, and the officer ran the plate, which revealed that the car was, indeed, the stolen Focus, Forrester explained.

The driver, Patrick Dale, 32, of Salina, was arrested on a requested charge of felony theft, according to Forrester.

The car was not damaged and was returned to the Salina Journal, he noted.

encouraging active outdoor play for older children while they reside in the
safe environment of the Ashby House.

Communities in Schools of Mid-America, $2,500 to provide Salina
students with the essential items needed to keep them in school and on the path
to graduation.

USD 305, $1,145 to purchase a storage unit for the Functional Learning Center
(FLC) room at South Middle School to help organize the instructional resources
used by special education students for structured learning activities.

Salina Art Center, $5,000 to develop the SAC filmmaking program for filmmaking students
to acquire technical skills, practice vocabularies of critique, analysis &amp;
storytelling, and gain film knowledge.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, $4,417.75 to develop an excursions program
as an alternative site-based program to offer the opportunity to engage
physical activities while promoting healthy lifestyles.

The Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, $4,981.35 to help purchase
iPad tablets and security anti-theft tablet kiosks to enable clients to access
telehealth and secure internet needs.

Salina Grace, $4,000 to purchase needed items to help prevent the spread of
Covid-19 within the Salina Grace Winter crisis shelter.

Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, $5,000 to bring additional food resources to
families in need in Assaria and surrounding areas by purchasing reusable
supplies and to cover the costs to establish a food bank for distribution.

OCCK Transportation has announced the 2020 Holiday Give &amp; Go charitable campaign set for Dec. 9.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year’s theme will be “Stuff the Bus.”

The 2020 Holiday Give &amp; Go campaign is a community fundraiser that will look a little different this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the past, all fares and monetary donations received by OCCK general public transportation were donated to charity.&nbsp;&nbsp;This year, however, fares are not being charged, so we are asking for the public’s help in creating another successful fundraiser.&nbsp;

"On Dec. 9, we are asking for monetary donations, as well as food items, such as Jello, granola bars, canned soup and ramen noodles.&nbsp;&nbsp;All items donated will go to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank," OCCK Transportation explained in a news release.&nbsp;

Non riders are encouraged to make donations as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each CityGo and 81 Connection bus has a fare box inside the bus and all drivers will accept donations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Additional donations can be brought to the OCCK Transportation building at 340 N. Santa Fe, Salina.

We all had big dreams as little kids. Maybe your dream was to be an astronaut, a musician, or even a mermaid! But when you got a little older, and a little wiser, real life set in and you realized—for one reason or another—that wasn’t going to happen.

Adults have dreams, too. Maybe you’re dreaming of going back to school to pursue that degree and job you’re passionate about. Or perhaps you really want to get out of the suburbs, and live on a big piece of land. Maybe you just want to have enough cash to comfortably take your family on a nice vacation each year.

Dreams are crucial to your financial life, because they help you see what you value and motivate you to save for the long haul. If you aren’t actively saving, it’s a warning sign you’re disconnected from your dreams. If you’re unfocused—saving a little here and there—you need to tap into your dreams to see real progress with your money. I see two types of dream-killers all the time: the daily grind and the naysayers. Let’s start with the daily grind. And oh, the naysayers. Even if we’re staying focused on the big picture, many of us are told our dreams aren’t possible. It could come from a parent, teacher, friend, or just someone we look up to. They usually mean well, but their words can stop us dead in our tracks. We want to save, take a risk, and try something new. Still, the doubts of others can destroy our courage to keep going. But your dreams are too important. When we dream, we’re digging into our very purpose for living. Be alert, stay focused, and ignore the naysayers. There’s too much at stake to take them seriously.

But when you got a little older, and a little wiser, real life set in and you realized—for one reason or another—that wasn’t going to happen.Adults have dreams, too. Maybe you’re dreaming of going back to school to pursue that degree and job you’re passionate about. Or perhaps you really want to get out of the suburbs, and live on a big piece of land. Maybe you just want to have enough cash to comfortably take your family on a nice vacation each year.Dreams are crucial to your financial life, because they help you see what you value and motivate you to save for the long haul. If you aren’t actively saving, it’s a warning sign you’re disconnected from your dreams. If you’re unfocused—saving a little here and there—you need to tap into your dreams to see real progress with your money. When you really, truly want something, no one can stop you from saving for it and working hard to make it happen. So, what’s stopping you?I see two types of dream-killers all the time: the daily grind and the naysayers. Let’s start with the daily grind. We all go through seasons when we get stuck in the same ol’, same ol’ routine of our busy lives. We let time get away from us and before we know it, two years have passed, and we aren’t any closer to our dreams. The daily grind and its busy pace can be a distraction from your big picture. Don’t let this happen to you! You don’t want to look up in two years—or even worse, 10 years—and realize you haven’t been saving.And oh, the naysayers. Even if we’re staying focused on the big picture, many of us are told our dreams aren’t possible. It could come from a parent, teacher, friend, or just someone we look up to. They usually mean well, but their words can stop us dead in our tracks. We want to save, take a risk, and try something new. Still, the doubts of others can destroy our courage to keep going. But your dreams are too important. When we dream, we’re digging into our very purpose for living. Be alert, stay focused, and ignore the naysayers. There’s too much at stake to take them seriously.I know money can be a speed bump on the path to achieving your dreams, but it doesn’t have to be. I can’t make you a mermaid, but I can promise that&nbsp;you&nbsp;have the power&nbsp;to use your dream to fuel your savings account—and to use your savings account to fund your dreams. CRUZE: How to fund your dreams in 2021

Today is Tuesday, Dec. 1, the 336th day of 2020. There are 30 days left in the year. 

On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a Black seamstress, was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus; the incident sparked a year-long boycott of the buses by Blacks. 

In 1824, the presidential election was turned over to the U.S. House of Representatives when a deadlock developed between John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford and Henry Clay. (Adams ended up the winner.) 

In 1860, the Charles Dickens novel "Great Expectations" was first published in weekly serial form.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln sent his Second Annual Message to Congress, in which he called for the abolition of slavery, and went on to say, "Fellow-citizens, we can not escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves." 

In 1941, Japan's Emperor Hirohito approved waging war against the United States, Britain and the Netherlands after his government rejected U.S. demands contained in the Hull Note.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the United States was expanding its special operations forces in Iraq and Syria to help fight Islamic State militants. The Philadelphia 76ers ended the longest losing streak in the history of major professional sports in the United States, topping the Los Angeles Lakers 103-91 to snap a 28-game skid.

One year ago: "Frozen 2" set a record for the five-day period starting on the day before Thanksgiving, taking in $132.7 million at the box office. A powerful winter storm that had tormented travelers across the U.S. since before Thanksgiving moved to the Northeast. Actor Shelley Morrison, best known for playing maid Rosario Salazar on "Will &amp; Grace," died at the age of 83.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita reported that the heaviest snow is expected across south-central Kansas, where 3 to 6 inches is possible. 

One to three inches is expected across the rest of central and southern Kansas.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported 206 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 1,522. 

Of that total, 924 cases have either met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines or have died and six active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

Following is the updated case data as provided by the health department.

• New cases since last public release: 206

• Hospitalized cases (may not represent current hospitalizations): 47

• Ventilated cases (may not represent current ventilated cases): 6
