A Topeka man was arrested early this morning after attempting to hide&nbsp; in a housing development and then leading a deputy in a pursuit north of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said that a deputy was on patrol north of Salina at approximately 3:40 a.m. Friday when he noticed a gold Chevrolet Tahoe that seemed suspicious. The driver pulled the Tahoe into a driveway in the Bartley Heights housing development and shut off the lights, Soldan said.

The deputy circled back around and noticed that the driver's seat was down, so he got out to investigate, Soldan explained. The deputy made contact with the driver, who had gotten out of the vehicle, but when the deputy asked for the man's driver's license, the driver got back into the Tahoe and refused to get out, Soldan said.

The Tahoe then took off through the yard adjacent to the driveway and fled north on Old Highway 81, beginning a pursuit through northern Saline County. According to Soldan, the pursuit took the following route.

The driver, who was identified as Dustin Lund, 39, of Topeka, stopped there apparently because he saw other law enforcement vehicles approaching, Soldan said.

According to Soldan, Lund had an active body only failure to appear warrant out of Riley County. Additionally, he was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

A woman was injured after the pickup she was driving was rear-ended by another pickup in south Salina Thursday morning.

A 2016 Ford F150 driven by Pamela Christensen, 58, of Salina, was stopped at a stoplight in the southbound lane of the 2000 block of South Ninth Street at approximately 10:50 a.m. when the pickup was rear-ended by a 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by Edward Luett, 70, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Christensen suffered neck pain and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, he noted.

Luett was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester reported.

The Ford sustained rear-end damage and the Chevrolet front-end damage, however, both were removed by their owners, Forrester explained.

ABILENE -- Thirty-one hospitals in Kansas achieved the State of Excellence in Education and Training award for neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Vermont Oxford Network (VON) has awarded a “Center of Excellence in Education and Training for Infants and Families Affected by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome” designation to Memorial Health System (MHS), in Abilene.

The award recognizes that at least 85 percent of the multidisciplinary care teams participating in “Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Collaborative: Improving Care to Improve Outcomes” completed universal training for care of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

Neonatal abstinence syndrome is drug withdrawal syndrome experienced by infants exposed to opioids while in utero. Infants born with NAS are more likely to have respiratory complications, feeding difficulty, low birthweights, and extended hospital stays.

“Our obstetrics department is focused on providing quality care to our community,” MHS Chief Nursing Officer, Angie Johnson said. “They continually work to educate, grow and develop as a team, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with them, and all the babies they have taken care of!”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, KPQC partnered with VON to provide 33 hospitals in the state universal training designed to standardize care policies. The collaborative approach to universal training included rapid-cycle distribution of current evidence-based practices to the entire interdisciplinary workforce engaged in caring for substance-exposed infants and families. This approach has been proven to reduce length of hospital stay and length of pharmacologic treatment while increasing family satisfaction. Memorial Health System - Abilene is one of the 31 hospitals in the state that achieved the excellence designation from VON and contributed to the second statewide recognition of excellence in education and training that VON has awarded.

“Our staff are committed to providing the best care to our patients,” MHS OB Unit Coordinator, Holly Pomeroy, RN, said. “We work to engage and empower patients and providers alike, to intentionally improve health outcomes with our collective effort. The Salina Souperbowl of Hope needs your help.

"We are asking businesses and churches to help us with our goal of collecting 55,000 cans of soup to be distributed between the Salina Food Bank, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Ashby House, and DVACK," Superbowl of Hope coordinators noted in a news release.  

Cans of soup and donations are being collected until Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021.

In addition to cans of soup, monetary donations also will be accepted.

"$25 will allow us to buy 60 cans of soup," the organization noted in the news release. 

Donations may be taken to the Salina Emergency Food Bank or call 785-452-5008 for pickup.

Museum announces Holiday Open House change

A Lincoln man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly stealing a FedEx truck from a north Salina repair shop.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that officers were sent to Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street, Wednesday afternoon for the report of suspicious activity involving a FedEx truck driving in the parking lot. The truck was a 2008 Utility Truck valued at $22,000, he noted. 

According to Forrester, the driver was reported to be a white male, wearing a leather jacket, hat, and jeans, not a FedEx uniform. In the northwest corner of the parking lot, an officer observed the truck and a male subject matching the description who was pouring into the engine compartment a liquid that was just running onto the ground, he noted.

Officers contacted FedEx and learned that the truck had been taken from Randy’s Auto Repair, 1015 West North Street, a short time prior to the officers being called to Walmart, Forrester explained.

Raymond Lawrence, 33, of Lincoln, was arrested and charged with felony theft and driving while suspended, Forrester reported.

ABILENE -- Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on Nov. 20. A total of $229 was raised from the Jeans Day. 

MHS departments could also participate in a Fall Centerpiece contest. Employees voted on their favorite centerpiece by making a monetary donation. There were a total of nine entries, which raised an additional $89. The winning department was Patient Financial Services. A total donation of $318 was presented to Village Manor residents for activities. The Jeans Day and Fall Centerpiece contest were organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

The Kansas Lottery, in partnership with the National Council of Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University, is joining the global campaign to encourage players to “gift responsibly” this holiday season.

The “Gift Responsibly” campaign advocates for responsible gambling as well as reminds players that “lottery tickets aren’t child’s play” and should not be given as gifts for individuals younger than 18 years old.

“While gifting lottery tickets is a fun and festive way to celebrate the holidays, lottery tickets are not for children,” said Executive Director Stephen Durrell. “The Kansas Lottery is very serious about responsible gaming and reminds all gift givers that lottery products should only be given to those 18 years or older.”

It is illegal for a Kansas Lottery retailer to knowingly sell a lottery ticket to a minor. The potential penalty for selling lottery tickets to a minor is up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Minors are also prohibited by law from claiming a prize won on a Kansas Lottery ticket.

A pair of incoming first-year students were recently awarded Kansas Wesleyan’s top scholarship, the Eisenhower Scholarship.

Katherine Madsen (Hiawatha, Kansas/Hiawatha HS) and Alayna Behrman (Craig, Colorado/Moffat County HS) were the two recipients. Madsen is the soon-to-be valedictorian at Hiawatha High School and intends to major in Biology (pre-med), as does Behrman, who plans to be an ER/trauma surgeon.

Both will receive a full tuition scholarship to the university, after standing out from other applicants during the mid-November virtual event.

“Through the process, it became clear that both Katherine and Alayna exemplified everything we look for in a Kansas Wesleyan student,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement, admissions and marketing. “Whether it was their exploits in the classroom, their community service, or their work in activities or athletics, they stood out from the beginning. We’re proud to award the Eisenhower Scholarship to both of them, and can’t wait to have them on campus.”

Applications are now being taken for the Advanced Citizens Academy.

Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that the Advanced Citizens Academy will run from Jan. 20-March 10. 

Applications will be accepted until Dec. 31. Applications are available at the front counter of the sheriff's office, 251 North 10th Street, or on the sheriff's website on the <a href="https://www.salinesheriff.org/Community/Citizens-Academy">Citizen's Academy page</a>.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office and the Salina Police Department jointly offer a Citizens Academy in the fall and, in the spring, an Advanced Citizens Academy for those who have completed the basic course.

The Citizens Academy is part of a continuing program designed to:

●Acquaint citizens with law enforcement's practices and services

●Acquaint officers with concerns and perceptions of the community

The mission of the Citizens Academy is to build a better understanding between citizens and law enforcement through education and positive interaction, according to information on the Saline County Sheriff's website. 

Persons applying for either academy must meet the following qualifications.

●No misdemeanor arrest within one year of application
