Police are investigating damage done to a car while it was parked at a south Salina store Tuesday night.

Tammy Wilks, 59, of Salina, told police that her 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was damaged while it was parked at Goodwill, 2640 Planet Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Wilks said she believed the car was damaged between 9-10 p.m. Tuesday.

The car had swirl scratches in the paint on the passenger side door.   Wilks also reported that one of her tires had screws in it. The tire had been fixed prior to the officer’s arrival, Forrester explained.

"Just the other day, I read an article about the discovery of the 9,000-year-old remains of a woman found with hunting gear, which pointed to the fact that ancient women were hunters, not just gatherers. It immediately prompted me to begin a poem titled 'Field Report.'"

Two other local poets – Harley Elliott and Poetry Series founder Patricia Traxler - will read from their work via Zoom and YouTube on the remaining Tuesdays in April. 

Moritz is a writer, an installation and graphic artist, and retired educator. She received an MFA in Creative Writing from Wichita State University, where she was the 2009-2010 MFA Fellow in Poetry. Her poetry has received an AWP Intro Journals Award, A Ploughshares New Voice Award, an Academy of American Poets Prize, and a Holt&nbsp;Prize in Literature. Her essays have received the Isotope Prize for Creative Non-Fiction and a Hunger Mountain Creative Nonfiction Prize.

Moritz’s poetry has appeared in Ploughshares, Puerto del Sol, and Mason’s Road, among other publications, and her poetic texts have become part of public visual art installations. She was director of the Spring Poetry Series for 17 years and has taught at The Ellsworth Correctional Facility, Kansas State University, and Kansas Wesleyan University.

I’m a huge believer in financial literacy for everyone, but this stuff is especially important if you have kids who are in middle school, high school or college. · Do you understand how compound interest works?

· Do you know what types of insurance you need?

You can help with your kids’ financial literacy by showing them how to open a savings account and set money-saving goals. Even with younger kids, include them in your family’s financial conversations and help them divide any money they get into giving, saving and spending categories.

ONEAL: How to teach your kids about money

Today is Thursday, April 8, the 98th day of 2021. There are 267 days left in the year. 

On April 8, 1864, the United States Senate passed, 38-6, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolishing slavery. (The House of Representatives passed it in January 1865; the amendment was ratified and adopted in December 1865.) 

In 1513, explorer Juan Ponce de Leon and his expedition began exploring the Florida coastline. 

In 1820, the Venus de Milo statue was discovered by a farmer on the Greek island of Milos.

In 1911, an explosion at the Banner Coal Mine in Littleton, Alabama, claimed the lives of 128 men, most of them convicts loaned out from prisons. 

In 1913, the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, providing for popular election of U.S. senators (as opposed to appointment by state legislatures), was ratified. The Salvation Army and a number of community agencies are joining forces Saturday for food, fun, and info, and you're invited!

Growing Hope Together is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and will be outside at the Salvation Army, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue. CDC guidelines, including the wearing of facemasks and social distancing will be required.

The Salvation Army's Lieutenant Elis Pomales Morales told Salina Post that the event started as a discussion about outreach for north Salina and grew into an event open to everyone.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Pomales Morales said. 

The idea is to provide community resource information in a fun, family friendly atmosphere. There will be a variety of family activities including games for children. Free food from the the Salvation Army's canteen will be available. Additionally, a number of community organizations will be on hand, including the following.

OCCK Transportation has announced a new option for scheduling rides on services, including Regional Paratransit, City of Abilene, Med-A-Van, and the discounted taxi ride programs.&nbsp;

Riders are now able to use the online reservation form found under “Ride” on the website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/" target="_blank">salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;to schedule rides for Regional Paratransit, City of Abilene, Med-A-Van, and the discounted taxi ride programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Previously, the only option was by phone.&nbsp;

“We’ve been working hard to improve the quality of service and convenience for all of our paratransit riders,” said Angela Sanchez, Administrative Coordinator for OCCK Transportation. “By offering an online scheduling option, we are bringing significant improvements to our paratransit experience.”

All paratransit services do have an application process.&nbsp;&nbsp;New riders must be approved before scheduling.&nbsp;&nbsp;Existing riders that are already approved can use the online form at any time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Questions can be directed to the Transportation Office at 785-826-1583, option 6.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the site at which they plan to work. The worksites include the following.

Ashby House Volunteers will clean up flowerbeds and remove playground equipment from the property. Meet at 204 S. Eighth Street.

Community Housing Development Organization Volunteers will clean up yards at two residences, as well as clean out a basement. Meet at the corner of N. Ninth Street and W. Hamilton Avenue.

North Town Volunteers will clean and trim the landscaping at 5 Corners. Meet at N. Ninth Street and N. Broadway Boulevard.

Emergency Aid Food Bank garden Volunteers will paint a garden tool shed, clean and organize tools, put garden kits together, and pick up trash. Meet at 255 S. Chicago Street.

Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad Volunteers will clean and trim the landscaping, plus do general cleanup of the area. Meet at 1020 W. North Street.

Old Smoky Hill River channel Volunteers will pick up trash along the Smoky Hill River channel next to the Salina Family YMCA and other locations along the river. Meet at the Salina Family YMCA parking lot.

Salina Downtown Volunteers will clean and paint trash receptacles and clean parking lots and downtown along Santa Fe Avenue. Meet at Strand Plaza behind Barolo Grille.

Spring Spruce Up seeks volunteers for April 17 event

A couple years ago I was at an event where a fellow Farm Bureau staffer from another state lamented he spent so much of his time dealing with the legislative process, there wasn’t much of a chance to really fight for agriculture. I certainly admired his passion, but I believe “fight” was an unfortunate word to use. I’m not suggesting political fights aren’t necessary, rather I think they should be treated like real fights and saved for the rare instances when other options have been exhausted. Both passion and perspective are required to effectively engage in politics. Far too often we are led to believe passion is equal to rage and rage is evidence of righteousness. The problem is rage overpowers our ability to reason, overwhelms our logical capabilities and overthrows our perspective. People get so worked up looking for a fight, they begin tilting at windmills and let true threats go by unnoticed. Immediate gratification and instantaneous reaction supersedes information gathering and seeking deeper understanding. Part of this is most of us only have a limited understanding of what’s going on outside of our immediate lives. Sometimes just keeping track of my wallet and keys seems like a full-time job, let alone navigating the daily workings of a county commission, state legislature and the federal government’s vast bureaucracy. Never mind the social media rabbit trail I get lost on for hours at a time. The problem with only having just the surface-level view of issues is we’re swayed by our previous experiences. As humans we’re hardwired to fill in gaps with our biases and prejudices. That serves you well when you’re walking through the woods and see something slithering along the trail. Humans use the same fight or flight response when dealing with each other. We see safety in those who think and act in similar ways to ourselves, and we perceive danger in those who don’t. Nowhere is this more true than on social media. These platforms are great for a variety of things but fostering a deeper understanding of political issues isn’t one of them. People allow their emotions and experiences to drive the discussion once a position is taken. We then ascribe all sorts of ulterior motives to those with different ideas as insular tribes form around issues and devolve into fights because this is the surface level of political discussion we see on TV. In reality, even the smallest issues are incredibly complex, and solutions are difficult even in areas where there’s broad consensus. Our instinct is to perceive disagreement as a threat, which tricks us into believing we have two options: fight or flight. There’s actually a third option and that’s to allow for uncertainty. It’s OK to believe those who disagree with you are sincere in their beliefs. Their experiences, biases and prejudices have led them to different policy prescriptions. But they are still human and experience all of the same emotions you do. Fighting consumes not only time and energy, but also credibility. Brawling over every issue is a good way for others to quickly ignore you. Engagement requires perspective, logic and reason. And perseverance. The best way to fight for agriculture is to develop a passion for the mundane things like talking to legislators and policy makers about our experiences, taking the time to provide feedback on issues that affect us, becoming educated on the issues before us and, maybe the most difficult of all, keeping our minds open to new ideas. We won’t resolve every issue, but these are the necessary steps before gearing up for a real fight.

 </figure>By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm BureauA couple years ago I was at an event where a fellow Farm Bureau staffer from another state lamented he spent so much of his time dealing with the legislative process, there wasn’t much of a chance to really fight for agriculture. I certainly admired his passion, but I believe “fight” was an unfortunate word to use. I’m not suggesting political fights aren’t necessary, rather I think they should be treated like real fights and saved for the rare instances when other options have been exhausted. Both passion and perspective are required to effectively engage in politics. Far too often we are led to believe passion is equal to rage and rage is evidence of righteousness. The problem is rage overpowers our ability to reason, overwhelms our logical capabilities and overthrows our perspective. People get so worked up looking for a fight, they begin tilting at windmills and let true threats go by unnoticed. Immediate gratification and instantaneous reaction supersedes information gathering and seeking deeper understanding. Part of this is most of us only have a limited understanding of what’s going on outside of our immediate lives. Sometimes just keeping track of my wallet and keys seems like a full-time job, let alone navigating the daily workings of a county commission, state legislature and the federal government’s vast bureaucracy. Never mind the social media rabbit trail I get lost on for hours at a time. The problem with only having just the surface-level view of issues is we’re swayed by our previous experiences. As humans we’re hardwired to fill in gaps with our biases and prejudices. That serves you well when you’re walking through the woods and see something slithering along the trail. Humans use the same fight or flight response when dealing with each other. We see safety in those who think and act in similar ways to ourselves, and we perceive danger in those who don’t. Nowhere is this more true than on social media. These platforms are great for a variety of things but fostering a deeper understanding of political issues isn’t one of them. People allow their emotions and experiences to drive the discussion once a position is taken. We then ascribe all sorts of ulterior motives to those with different ideas as insular tribes form around issues and devolve into fights because this is the surface level of political discussion we see on TV. In reality, even the smallest issues are incredibly complex, and solutions are difficult even in areas where there’s broad consensus. Our instinct is to perceive disagreement as a threat, which tricks us into believing we have two options: fight or flight. There’s actually a third option and that’s to allow for uncertainty. It’s OK to believe those who disagree with you are sincere in their beliefs. Their experiences, biases and prejudices have led them to different policy prescriptions. But they are still human and experience all of the same emotions you do. Fighting consumes not only time and energy, but also credibility. INSIGHT: Fighting for agriculture

Today is Wednesday, April 7, the 97th day of 2021. There are 268 days left in the year. 

On April 7, 1915, jazz singer-songwriter Billie Holiday, also known as "Lady Day," was born in Philadelphia. 

In 1862, Union forces led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant defeated the Confederates at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee.

In 1922, the Teapot Dome scandal had its beginnings as Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall signed a secret deal to lease U.S. Navy petroleum reserves in Wyoming and California to his friends, oilmen Harry F. Sinclair and Edward L. Doheny, in exchange for cash gifts.

In 1927, the image and voice of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover were transmitted live from Washington to New York in the first successful long-distance demonstration of television.

In 1945, during World War II, American planes intercepted and effectively destroyed a Japanese fleet, which included the battleship Yamato, that was headed to Okinawa on a suicide mission.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower held a news conference in which he spoke of the importance of containing the spread of communism in Indochina, saying, "You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly." (This became known as the "domino theory," although Eisenhower did not use that term.)

In 2015, Michael Thomas Slager, a white South Carolina police officer, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Black motorist Walter Lamer Scott after law enforcement officials saw a cellphone video taken by a bystander. (Slager pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges and was sentenced to 20 years in prison; prosecutors agreed to drop state murder charges that remained after a jury couldn't agree whether he had committed a crime.)

Ten years ago: A man shot and killed 12 children at the Tasso da Silveira public school in Rio de Janeiro; the gunman, a onetime student at the school, shot and killed himself after being cornered by police. A powerful aftershock struck Japan near the same area that had been devastated by a mighty earthquake and tsunami nearly a month earlier; no giant wave or loss of life was reported.

Five years ago: Russian President Vladimir Putin denied any links to offshore accounts and described the Panama Papers document leaks scandal as part of a U.S.-led plot to weaken Russia. In a brazen assault near the Syrian capital, Islamic State militants abducted 300 cement workers and contractors from their workplace northeast of Damascus. "American Idol" crowned 24-year-old Trent Harmon its 15th and final winner as the influential TV show came to an end.

One year ago: Wisconsin went ahead with in-person voting after the state Supreme Court blocked the governor's order to postpone the primary; thousands waited in line in Milwaukee amid fears that the voting would bring a spike in the state's coronavirus cases. Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly resigned after lambasting the officer he'd fired as the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which had been stricken by a coronavirus outbreak; James McPherson was appointed as acting Navy secretary. President Donald Trump removed Glenn Fine, the acting Defense Department inspector general, who was supposed to oversee the $2.2 trillion rescue package for businesses and individuals affected by the coronavirus.

The fair is open to the general public and is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at Tony’s Pizza Event Center, 800 The Midway.&nbsp;Current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and mask orders will be in place.

More than 30 area employers are scheduled to be present. Job seekers are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes with them.&nbsp;

UPDATE: Western Ottawa County warning has expired

Plans are for the Salina Educational Automotive Museum of America to open this fall and the driving force behind that opening will be Michelle Peck.

The museum board announced today that Peck has been named the organization's executive director.

"The board is excited to move forward with leadership from Michelle. She has a proven track record of success and she’s extremely creative and driven. She will be charged with hiring a team to operate the facility and build partnerships with donors, political and community leaders, educational institutions, industry groups and other stakeholders," Board President Tom Pestinger noted in a news release issued this afternoon.

The 43,000 square-foot museum will be located at 134 S. Fourth Street on the eastern side of downtown Salina and across the street from part of the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project.

“We will be housed in a completely renovated and refurbished historic brick warehouse now known as The Garage! I am looking forward to working with car enthusiasts, students, hobbyist, and those who are simply exploring the revitalize downtown district,” Peck said in the release.

Peck told Salina Post that she couldn't decide on one aspect of her new job that excites her the most.

"I can't just pick one thing! Building relationships with regional and national partners to help strengthen the visibility of our community is exciting. Sharing the stories of the cars and how they impact our American history is truly an art. Working with students and adults in our hands-on interactive simulators will be a lot of fun, too!" Peck explained.

According to information from Peck, the mission of the museum is to collect, preserve, interpret, exhibit, and celebrate automobiles in order to elevate awareness of and appreciation for the automobiles' historical significance and influence on American culture. Its vision is a world-class museum that "educates young and old through entertaining interactive displays, serves as a gathering place for enthusiast from around the globe, and developed industry/sponsor partnerships to ensure restoration and preservation of automotive treasures."

But how does the museum fit with the revitalization of downtown Salina?

"Cultural tourism is growing in rural areas and many travelers list art galleries and museums as their first choice of activity," Peck explained. "We are building a world class museum in downtown Salina and in partnership with The Yard, The Fieldhouse, The Alley, The Art Center, The Stiefel Theater, The Community Theater, The Smoky Hill Museum, The Cove, The Silos, The River Project, and now The Garage, we can collectively bring people to Salina and get them to stay for a mini vacation."

Peck noted that her team will be made up of both part-time and full-time positions, including a museum curator, director of operations, and guest services representatives. Additionally, internships will be available in the fall, and the museum will have a "robust volunteer program," Peck added.

Its vision is a world-class museum that "educates young and old through entertaining interactive displays, serves as a gathering place for enthusiast from around the globe, and developed industry/sponsor partnerships to ensure restoration and preservation of automotive treasures."But how does the museum fit with the revitalization of downtown Salina?"Cultural tourism is growing in rural areas and many travelers list art galleries and museums as their first choice of activity," Peck explained. "We are building a world class museum in downtown Salina and in partnership with The Yard, The Fieldhouse, The Alley, The Art Center, The Stiefel Theater, The Community Theater, The Smoky Hill Museum, The Cove, The Silos, The River Project, and now The Garage, we can collectively bring people to Salina and get them to stay for a mini vacation."Peck noted that her team will be made up of both part-time and full-time positions, including a museum curator, director of operations, and guest services representatives.
