The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect until 10 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

North winds of around 30 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph are forecast.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

UPDATE: Most area counties dropped from wind advisory

MCPHERSON -- The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is being brought in to investigate the death of an inmate in the McPherson County Jail.

According to information from Sheriff Jerry P. Montagne, Kevin Brittingham, 55, of Newton, was arrested on a requested charge of domestic battery and booked into the McPherson County Jail at approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday. He was placed in a booking holding cell.

At approximately 3:35 p.m., a McPherson County correctional officer discovered Brittingham unresponsive in the booking cell. 

According to Montagne, life-saving measures were attempted, including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and using an automated external defibrillator. Additionally, McPherson Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to the jail and continued attempting to resuscitate Brittingham. Despite those efforts, Brittingham was pronounced dead at approximately 4:05 p.m., Montagne reported.

Per state statute, the McPherson County Sheriff's Office has requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) look into the matter. The KBI investigates all deaths of individuals in the custody of a Kansas jail or prison, unless the inmate is being regularly attended by a physician.

Montagne noted that Brittingham's injuries appear to have been self-inflicted. An autopsy will be conducted and the investigation is ongoing.

Salina Regional Health Center is modifying its COVID-19 visitor restrictions due to the sustained low numbers of COVID-19 infection in the community.

Effective Monday, inpatients may have two designated visitors per day instead of one designated visitor for each day of a patient’s hospital stay. Labor and Delivery patients may also have two support persons for a newborn delivery. Pediatric patients will be permitted two parents/guardians per day. In situations where a patient requires an overnight visitor, only one visitor will be allowed to stay through the night.

Emergency Department patients will continue to have only one visitor accompany them for their care. Outpatients also will still be allowed just one assistant/visitor to accompany them for tests and procedures.

“We’re cautiously optimistic that these trends will continue,” said Bethanie McDowell, infection prevention director at Salina Regional Health Center. “However, as surges of COVID-19 activity are occurring around the country, we must continue to monitor local infection rates and adjust our visitation rules following guidelines set forth by the CDC and KDHE for health care providers based on community activity for COVID-19.”

All other COVID-19 guidelines will remain in place:

• All who enter the facility will be screened for COVID-19 infection risk.

• Visitors will be given a Visitor Identification Bracelet, which will be replaced daily.

• All who visit will be asked to wear a mask throughout the visit including in hallways, public areas and the patient’s room.

• Visitors should remain in the patient’s room as much as possible.

• Patients who are COVID-19 positive, or who are being tested for COVID-19, will not be allowed to have visitors.

The City of Salina Public Works Department has announced three roadway projects that are scheduled to begin Monday.

●Replacement of a section of pavement on Albert Avenue west of Roach Street. Albert Avenue from Roach Street heading west to Norton Street will be closed to through traffic during the repairs. Weather permitting, the repairs are expected to be completed within five days.

●Grading of the edge of the roadway along both right-of-ways of W. Schilling Road from Foxboro Drive to Royal Drive. According to Public Works, W. Schilling Road will remain open but motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling in the active work area. Weather permitting, the grading is expected to be completed within two to three days.

●Replacement of a section of pavement on S. Ninth Street south of Washington Street. Southbound traffic on S. Ninth Street at W. South Street will be closed and detoured west on W. South Street. Northbound traffic on S. Ninth Street will not be affected during the repairs. Weather permitting, the repairs are expected to be completed within three days.

Salina Public Works announces 3 street projects for next week

A rural Saline County woman escaped injury when her SUV caught fire in a veterinary clinic parking lot just west of Salina Thursday afternoon.

Sarah Finch had just left Westside Veterinary Clinic, 1441 W. North Street, and was starting her 1999 Dodge Durango when the engine compartment caught fire, Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning. Finch was able to safely exit the SUV, he said.

Units from both the Salina Fire Department and Rural Fire District No. 7 responded to the fire shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday. Hughes said Salina firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before rural firefighters arrived. The fire was contained in the engine compartment, he added.

Police investigating two nearby burglaries in south Salina

The use of seatbelts was credited in helping to keep three teens from being injured in a single-vehicle accident late Thursday afternoon just west of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that emergency responders were sent to the intersection of S. Halstead Road and W. Crawford Street at 5:25 p.m. Thursday for the report of a 2008 Scion TC that had hit a guardrail and gone over an embankment. Hughes said it appears that the 15-year-old Salina girl who was driving attempted to make a turn at too fast of a speed.

Neither the girl nor the 13-year-old and 14-year-old boys who were passengers were injured, Hughes said. All three were properly restrained by seatbelts, which helped to keep them from being injured or ejected, he said.

According to Captain Jim Hughes, three tailgates were taken from Chevrolet Silverados on Wednesday or Thursday at The Truck Store, 106 N. Scott Street in Brookville. The tailgates were valued at $500 each.

Additionally, $500 worth of damage was done when someone spun donuts in the muddy ground on the property, he added.

A strong cold front will be coming through the region this afternoon, and with it, storms for parts of our area. 

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, areas along and east of the Turnpike will have a good chance for some showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could be locally strong with dime size hail and 50 mph winds (blue shaded area). 

Severe thunderstorms are possible in far southeast Kansas with one inch hail and 60 mph possible (yellow shaded area). Very heavy rain is also possible with the stronger storms.

During this crime, a male jumped upon the hood and windshield of a white 2014 Ford Mustang, causing $500 damage. The person was likewise seen urinating on the vehicle.

Perhaps the biggest misconception of Nazi Germany is that the Nazi party came to power in a landslide victory and overwhelming wave of public support. This talk will look at the conditions of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s that made Nazism possible. It will also explore many examples of propaganda used by the Nazis to gain the support of the people for their new vision of Germany.

Cline is the historian and director of education at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in Overland Park. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on the SS Aufseherinnen in the concentration camp system and the gendered perpetration of the Holocaust. Her research has been supported by grants from the University of Kansas and Universität Hamburg. Cline has been an instructor in the University of Kansas humanities program and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. She also served on the faculties of the Kansas City Art Institute and University of Missouri Kansas City.

This is a great question! There are always circumstances beyond our control that can put us in a bad place, financially or otherwise, for a season. In 1865, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. 

In 1940, during World War II, Germany invaded Denmark and Norway.

In 1942, during World War II, some 75,000 Philippine and American defenders on Bataan surrendered to Japanese troops, who forced the prisoners into what became known as the Bataan Death March; thousands died or were killed en route.

In 1959, NASA presented its first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, 91, died in Phoenix, Arizona.

One year ago: The government reported that 6.6 million people had sought unemployment benefits in the preceding week, bringing the total to 16.8 million in the three weeks since the coronavirus outbreak took hold. New York recorded another 799 deaths from the virus; it was the third straight day in which the daily total reached a new high. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved out of intensive care at the London hospital where he was being treated for the virus. The Food and Drug Administration sent a warning letter to conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones, telling him to stop pitching bogus remedies for the coronavirus.

Health department: Vaccine registration site to close Saturday

One important back-to-basics step you can take this Financial Literacy Month (or anytime) is checking your credit report.&nbsp;

Your credit report has a summary of your credit history. For example, if you’ve been evicted and a landlord turns uncollected rent over to a collection agency, that might be on your credit report. Information in your credit report affects your credit score. That’s important because businesses — like insurance and phone companies — use your credit score to decide whether to give you a policy or service, and what rate to offer. And potential employers and landlords also might check your credit.

So you want to know that the information on your report is accurate. And if it’s wrong, you want to make sure someone didn’t steal your identity.

●Order your free credit report. Go to&nbsp;<a href="http://AnnualCreditReport.com">AnnualCreditReport.com</a>&nbsp;or call 877-322-8228. Until the end of the pandemic, everyone in the U.S. can get a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2021/03/free-weekly-credit-reports-during-covid-extended-until-april-2022">free credit report each week</a>&nbsp;from all three national credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion).

●Read the reports carefully.&nbsp;Do you recognize the accounts? Do they list credit applications? Did you apply for credit at those places?

●Spot mistakes.&nbsp;Fix anything that looks wrong (<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0151-disputing-errors-credit-reports">read&nbsp;more about how</a>). But if it looks like someone else is using your credit, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://IdentityTheft.gov">IdentityTheft.gov</a>&nbsp;to report it and get a recovery plan.

Only time and a plan to pay off debt will improve your credit, but with free credit reports available every week, it’s a good time to take a small step towards recovery.&nbsp;

ABILENE -- Emerging scholars are invited to submit a presentation abstract for consideration as a featured speaker during a D-Day commemorative symposium. 

The Eisenhower, Roosevelt, and Truman presidential libraries seek to develop and establish an annual virtual symposium intended to create a new platform for emerging scholars. Scheduled the first week of June, this symposium will focus on specialized topics related to the Allied effort in World War II.

The 2021 theme will feature the unsung heroes of WWII -- specifically lesser known subjects. 

The presidential libraries are looking for programs that go beyond tactics and strategy. The goal is to showcase the future of WWII scholarship by discovering little known topics. Each program is scheduled for one hour. 

The guest speaker will present his/her topic for approximately 40 minutes allowing time for audience participation and questions at the end.

Submission packets should include the presentation abstract, applicant contact information, and the applicant’s education status and academic goals summary. Submit packets to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:andrea.murphy@nara.gov" target="_blank">andrea.murphy@nara.gov</a>&nbsp;with the subject line D-Day Symposium no later than April 23, 2021. Selected participants will be notified May 12 and will receive a modest honorarium.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NEW CAMBRIA -- Five people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon near New Cambria.

A blue Chevrolet Cruze driven by a, 17-year-old Salina girl, was northbound on N. Cunningham Road and stopped at the stop sign at E. Old Highway 40. She pulled onto E. Old Highway 40 and collided with a westbound white 2003 Ford Taurus driven by David Nevitt, 73, of Abilene, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

Nevitt and a passenger, Irene Nevitt, 75, of Abilene, were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with possible injuries, Soldan said. Additionally, the teen and two of her three passengers, two 10-year-old girls, also were transported to Salina Regional with possible injuries, he said. The third passenger was a 12-year-old girl, Soldan added.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

It's appearing more likely that an extended period of below normal temperatures will impact much of the Plains next week, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. 

In central and southern Kansas, normal highs this time of year are in the 60s, and normal lows are in the 40s. It's possible some areas will fall into the low to mid 30s at night next week, the weather service noted. Keep this in mind if you have any plants that are more sensitive to colder temperatures.
