UPDATE: Maryland woman injured in I-70 accident east of Abilene

UPDATE 4 p.m. Tuesday 

ABILENE - A woman from Maryland was injured when the pickup she was driving overturned on Interstate 70 east of Abilene this morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Sally R. Shapiro-Gould, 67, of Reisterstown, Md., was westbound on I-70 in a 2016 Dodge Ram that was pulling a camper trailer. The pickup attempted to pass a tractor-trailer rig, lost control and overturned. The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. approximately 4.5 miles east of Abilene, KHP reported.

Shapiro-Gould was transported to Abilene Memorial Hospital with suspected serious injuries. A passenger in the pickup, Thomas D. Gould, 70, of Reisterstown, Md., was not injured. Both were properly restrained, KHP noted.

UPDATE 11:40 a.m. Tuesday: The Kansas Highway Patrol is asking westbound drivers to take the following detour to avoid the accident area.

"If possible, please avoid this area. WB I-70 detour is north to K-18, west on K-18 to K-15 and south on K-15 into Abilene. Please give workers room to work so everyone can go home safely.," Kansas Highway Patrol Troop C noted in a Facebook post.
