On April 13, Salina Police investigated usage of a stolen credit card on March 25 at two locations in Salina. 

 One was at Pilot, 1944 N. Ninth Street, for more than $580, and the other at Petro, 2125 N. Ninth Street, for more than $650. 

 The suspect who used the card appeared to be a white male in his early 20s.  He was wearing a gray or blue field hat, black and gray jacket, gloves, and pants.

PRATT – A Kansas angler’s prized catch may actually be worth a prize this spring and summer. 

The inaugural Great Kansas Fishing Derby will run May 1 to July 31 with at least 500 specially tagged fish located in up to 37 public waterbodies in Kansas. The Great Kansas Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Wildscape Foundation, the Bass Pro-Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, and many local retailers across Kansas.

“The main goal is to get more people fishing. We had a lot of anglers join the party in 2020 and we want them to keep participating,” said David Breth, KDWP sportfishing education coordinator. “We also want to make sure businesses know about their local fishing waters and just how many people visit these nearby fishing spots.”

Pre-registration is not required, and participation is free, though normal fishing license requirements remain in effect. A follow-up communication will notify the angler of what they’ve won and where to claim the prize. <a href="http://Ksfishderby.com">Ksfishderby.com</a> will also allow anglers and non-anglers to register to win additional prizes through weekly drawings.

Businesses across Kansas are supporting the Great Kansas Fishing Derby by providing prizes in the form of gift cards, merchandise and more – including a city zoo that has pledged an annual family pass. KDWP will also contribute gift cards, which can be credited toward any department-issued license or permit, or magazine subscription. KDWP gift cards are also honored at all Kansas state parks.

All participating waterbodies are open to the public and managed in whole or in part by KDWP. Also included in the list of participating waters are ponds and lakes currently enrolled in KDWP’s Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP). By leveraging funding from federal excise taxes on fishing equipment, KDWP leases public access – at no additional cost to the public – to gorgeous waters that once required special county, community or city permits.

A complete list of waters with fish tagged for the Derby will be posted on&nbsp;<a href="https://beyond.fishing/derby/" target="_blank">ksfishderby.com</a>&nbsp;on April 30.

“We’ll have popular sportfish tagged, like bass, crappie and walleye,” said Breth. “We’ll also have some non-sportfish like carp, gar and drum. We have people who like to fish for them and a lot who also participate in bow fishing. There will probably be some big bluegill tagged because we’d love to see kids win some of these prizes, too.”

Most tagged fish will meet legal length limits and can be legally kept. However, anglers may release their catch if they first remove the tag (see&nbsp;<a href="https://beyond.fishing/derby/" target="_blank">ksfishderby.com</a>&nbsp;for instructions).

Our daughter recently moved back in with us after she lost her job and her apartment. She hasn’t been able to find full-time work yet, and she had nowhere else to go. My husband and I are nearing retirement age, so we want to do the best and smartest thing to help her get back on her feet. What do you suggest?

First, you need to define what helping your daughter really means. What does it look like? In my mind, you haven’t helped her if she’s still living at home two or three years from now. Going to those lengths is called being an enabler. At the same time, you shouldn’t just show her the door and wish her good luck.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/recommends/life-insurance-for-married-couples" target="_blank">You and your husband</a>&nbsp;together&nbsp;should come to agreement on a forward-thinking plan that falls somewhere in the middle. I’m talking about something that allows your daughter a little time to heal and regain her dignity, but also includes a plan, expectations, and a move-out date.

If I were in your shoes, there would be requirements attached to her living at home again. One is that she would respect and abide by your household rules. If she’s going to live in your home, she should be expected to respect her parents and their wishes.

Number two, she should be thinking about and working on tangible&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/how-to-prepare-for-an-interview" target="_blank">career steps</a>&nbsp;every single day. I’m pretty sure she could find a part-time job out there to put a little extra money in her pocket. When she’s not earning some cash, she should be focusing on long-term career goals. Sending out resumés and filling out applications for full-time employment needs to be a priority.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The last thing I’ll suggest may sound a little strange, but trust me on this one. Right now, your daughter also needs some kind of physical activity on a regular basis. Exercise stimulates the mind, and she really needs that right now. It’ll also be great for her body.&nbsp;

This young lady has been through a stressful experience. She needs some understanding and support right now. At the same time, you don’t want to let her slide into bad habits and participate in promoting negative behavior. Step in, help her get her life back on track, and get her out in the world again. All three of you will be glad you did!

MANHATTAN -- Spring moisture has made the prospects of a good 2021 Kansas wheat crop very promising, in part due to approximately 4-6 inches of precipitation received across Kansas since March 12.

That's the word from K-State Research and Extension wheat specialist Romulo Lollato.

"From now until heading is when the crop needs the largest amount of water," said Lollato, adding that wheat in many Kansas fields is just beginning to elongate its stem. "Having this 4-6 inches of water recently received is definitely going to be used in a very efficient way by the winter wheat crop in Kansas."

Wet conditions last September followed by dry conditions in October created two very different crops in the state -- one in which early planted wheat (September) began to emerge and develop in the fall, and another in which emergence took place more slowly due to dry October conditions.

However, Lollato said even the late-emerging wheat seems to be doing well this spring, possibly due to warm soil temperatures during the winter cold spell. The March rains in Kansas has helped the crop recover from potential winter injury, as well as helped to put fertilizer into the root zone that can be used by wheat during stem elongation.

"Right now we are hopeful that not much area of winter wheat will be lost due to that potential of winter kill from the February cold spell," he said.

🎥K-State's Lollato gives update on Kansas winter wheat condition

NICKERSON — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board met in a special session Thursday and appointed Curtis Nightingale as the new superintendent.&nbsp;

Board President Dan Schweizer says that Nightingale emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead the School District. 

“The Board is certain in our choice of Mr. Nightingale and confident that under his leadership USD 309 will continue to be recognized as a student centered district," Schweizer said. “The input from the community and staff as a whole was very helpful to our process.”

Nightingale currently serves as the junior high/high school principal in Twin Valley USD 240 in Bennington. He is in his fifth year. Previously, Nightingale served as an assistant principal/activities director for 10 years at Pratt High School. He replaces Dr. Dawn Johnson, who becomes executive director of human resources for Hutchinson USD 308 this summer.

“Curtis is amazing, he’s very strong, he’s got a great background,” board member Jay Mitzner said following the meeting. “I can’t say enough about him. He interviewed exceptionally well.”

Mitzner says Nightingale's ability to communicate was one of his strong suits.

“He seems to have the ability to work well with everybody, but very assertive. I think he’s going to be a good fit for the district, good leader,” Mitzner said. “He emphasized good communication with the board and also the faculty.”

The district has seen a lot of division over several matters, including the failed bond issue. Mitzner, who was just recently appointed to the board, hopes changes are coming.

“I think having a full board obviously is the first step,” Mitzner said. “The district seems to have been split and it seems like we’re reaching out and things are starting to heal slowly.”

Nightingale was chosen over current Central Plains Superintendent Greg Clark. They were the only two finalists interviewed. Nightingale will begin his new duties July 1. He’ll earn an annual base salary of $120,000.

The advisory was issued because of a water main break, resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from McPherson County Rural Water District No. 1 indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Small quake shakes part of southern Saline County Thursday

The spotlight will be on the divisive toll shame and deceit take on a close-knit community as Salina Central High School Theatre presents Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

The final show of the season is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 23 and 24 and 2:30 p.m. April 25 in the school's auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased ahead of time to reduce a wait at the box office. The audience will be socially distanced by at least two rows, so seating will be limited to under 25 percent capacity.

Other safety measures will be implemented, including the wearing of masks by the performers, staff, and audience throughout the production. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances. 

Set in 1692, Miller's The Crucible chronicles the divisive toll shame and deceit take on the otherwise close-knit Puritan community of Salem, Mass.

The community's minister, Rev. Samuel Parris, fears the presence of witchcraft haunts his parish after discovering a number of the town's youth dancing in the woods, his daughter and niece, Abigail Williams, among them. Fearing the worst, and seeking to conceal any impropriety that might tarnish his own name, Parris turns to noted witch hunter Rev. John Hale to discover the cause of the devilish commotion. 

Hale's investigation, due to the naïve and diabolic actions of the Salem’s youth and adults alike, only further reveals a blemish upon human nature for which Abigail is all too familiar and no longer has patience: hypocrisy. Misguided public accusation threatens the privacy of personal faults, namely those of community paragon John Proctor. As The Crucible’s heat intensifies, Proctor, in an attempt to free Elizabeth, his wife, from the witch-hunt’s desperate condemnation, is forced to confront the toll hypocrisy has taken on his own marriage, community, soul, and good name.

Inspired by the actual events of the Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible personalizes the gravity of its historical context by laying bare the lengths to which a community can go to tear itself apart.

"People should come see The Crucible, not just because it’s a classic, but also because the subject matter is so relevant today, and I think our interpretation adds something fresh,” said Sophie Lenkiewicz, who portrays Elizabeth Proctor.

"The Crucible digs into human behavior, and it has pushed me and my peers to grow as actors to portray the story and characters. Everyone has been working to the best of their abilities to put this show on," added Tobi Duckworth, who portrays Giles Corey. "It's a dark show, but it is definitely worth coming to see!

 </figure>The spotlight will be on the divisive toll shame and deceit take on a close-knit community as Salina Central High School Theatre presents Arthur Miller's The Crucible.The final show of the season is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 23 and 24 and 2:30 p.m. April 25 in the school's auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased ahead of time to reduce a wait at the box office. The audience will be socially distanced by at least two rows, so seating will be limited to under 25 percent capacity.Other safety measures will be implemented, including the wearing of masks by the performers, staff, and audience throughout the production. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances. About the playSet in 1692, Miller's The Crucible chronicles the divisive toll shame and deceit take on the otherwise close-knit Puritan community of Salem, Mass. The community's minister, Rev. Samuel Parris, fears the presence of witchcraft haunts his parish after discovering a number of the town's youth dancing in the woods, his daughter and niece, Abigail Williams, among them. Fearing the worst, and seeking to conceal any impropriety that might tarnish his own name, Parris turns to noted witch hunter Rev. John Hale to discover the cause of the devilish commotion. Hale's investigation, due to the naïve and diabolic actions of the Salem’s youth and adults alike, only further reveals a blemish upon human nature for which Abigail is all too familiar and no longer has patience: hypocrisy. Misguided public accusation threatens the privacy of personal faults, namely those of community paragon John Proctor. Central Theatre to present Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible'

The outlook for May across Kansas calls for higher chances for warmer than normal temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Additionally, much of the state looks to be in the normal precipitation range, however, there is a slight chance for below normal precipitation across southwest Kansas.

Two guns were reported stolen during a burglary at a Salina business early Wednesday morning.

Officers were sent to Ace Hardware, 321 S. Broadway Boulevard, when a burglar alarm went off at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Upon arrival, they found a window on the west side of the business and a glass door had been shattered to access the store.

Officers cleared the building and found no one inside. While clearing the building, they saw damage to the locked gun racks on the north end of the store, he noted. According to a report, the suspect took two guns from the store: a Lander Arms- BPX902 Gen 2 12 gauge shotgun and a Savage Arms B22 F Compact 22 .22 caliber rifle.

Video surveillance of the suspect attempting to break in the back of the store prior to breaking into the front of the store was obtained.  Damage was done to the rear overhead door and an exterior walk through door, but the suspect did not gain entry at that time, Forrester explained.

Total loss in damage and theft is estimated in excess of $8,000, he reported.

According to Forrester, surveillance video of the incident is being reviewed and the investigation is ongoing.

Saline County today announced two road closures so that railroad crossings can be replaced.

N.&nbsp;Niles Road between E. Old 40 Highway and E. Stimmel Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Wednesday for replacement of the railroad crossing.&nbsp;Weather permitting, the roadway will be opened by the end of Wednesday. &nbsp;

SALINA — Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus is again providing teenagers fascinated by drones with a fun learning opportunity this summer through the&nbsp;<a href="https://polytechnic.k-state.edu/academics/youth-programs/summer/uas-academy/" target="_blank">UAS Virtual Academy</a>. From June 21-25, the campus is offering an online unmanned aircraft systems program for ages 14 to 17. The academy invites participants to explore the world of drones by learning foundational aviation skills, flight maneuvers, safety procedures, and photography and videography basics, as well as receiving mentorship from Kansas State Polytechnic's expert staff and students. The weeklong program costs $49 and participants must provide their own drone. After registering and before the start of the academy, participants will be sent an instruction kit that includes essentials such as a logbook and landing pad to support the experience. Students will learn through a combination of online lessons and flight training that can be done anywhere they choose. The academy will provide drone fundamentals that strengthen awareness of regulations and safety, flight planning knowledge, flying techniques, and photography and video skills. In addition, industry experts will log on and give insight into potential careers. Those who successfully complete the program will be prepared to transition to a collegiate UAS degree program if desired. Registration for the UAS Virtual Academy closes at noon June 11. TOPEKA — Fifty Kansas high school seniors have been named 2021 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars, the Kansas State Department of Education announced Tuesday.

The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school. This is the fourth year for the initiative.

Students must be a high school senior and meet the following criteria to be selected as a scholar:

●Have earned or presently enrolled in 3.0 or more CTE credits with documentation of technical skill attainment.

●Have a CTE Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or better in CTE coursework.

●Civic engagement or outstanding community service with verification letter.

●Work-place experience.&nbsp;These experiences can include school-based experiences, internships, clinicals, supervised agricultural experiences, community-based or student-led businesses located on or off the school campus. The experiences should reflect the career interests of the candidate and industry expectations. A minimum of 80 hours of experience is expected prior to submission.
