K-State to launch free financial literacy program

MANHATTAN – Let’s face it: Discipline when it comes to managing our money isn’t always easy. And saving? Another challenge.&nbsp;

To help boost money management skills, including ways to save, manage debt and handle credit, K-State Research and Extension is offering the&nbsp;<a href="https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cD9prK0uabDkW4S" target="_blank">Wallet Wisdom</a>&nbsp;program, which are six free webinars in April and May. &nbsp;

The webinars will be presented Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. CDT via Zoom, beginning Thursday. With just one registration, participants can access just one or all six webinars. Time is allowed for questions and answers. For privacy reasons, only the host will be able to see who is asking the questions. All sessions will be recorded for participants to view at their convenience any time. &nbsp;

Thursday – A Financial Checkup&nbsp;– A regular check of financial health can identify problems, chart progress, and outline steps to achieve financial goals.

April 29 – Emotions and Money&nbsp;– Your relationship with money can be based on years of emotion. Learn more to better understand your financial habits.

May 6 – Spending Plans&nbsp;– A spending plan can track your income and expenses and support you as you manage your money and work towards your goals.

May 13 – Increasing Savings&nbsp;– We save for many reasons, including emergencies, insurance deductibles, retirement and more. Learn ways to increase your savings.&nbsp;.&nbsp;

May 20 – Debt Management&nbsp;– Especially in our current economy, debt can get out of control. Join us to learn ways to manage and pay down your debt.

Wallet Wisdom webinars can help sharpen money management skills

The auditorium at the Kansas Army National Guard’s regional training institute in Salina buzzed with activity Thursday as the Salina Family Healthcare Center’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic prepared to open its doors.

“The organization reached out to us to see if the Kansas Army National Guard would have facilities to support a Salina community COVID-19 vaccination clinic, and we did,” said Maj. Michael Billings, Kansas Training Center battalion executive officer. “We still have Kansas Army National Guard training here, but we were able to de-conflict and work everything out for them to use our auditorium and hopefully get some more people access to the COVID vaccine.”

“We have 500 doses of Moderna,” said Hayley Samford, marketing and community outreach associate with the Salina Family Healthcare Center. “So it would be wonderful if we could go through all that today.”

Samford said that most of their vaccine clinics up until this point have been hosted on the east side of town, which has been problematic for those who may lack transportation, time off work to get across town or available childcare options. So when they decided to do an outreach clinic in the hopes of making the vaccine more accessible to residents and employees on the west side, location was everything. The Kansas Army National Guard training facility, it turned out, was perfectly situated to host a clinic that could address many of those issues.

“For this clinic, we were thinking especially about Schwann’s, since they are the largest employer in Salina,” Samford said. “We wanted to make it as convenient as possible to vaccinate their workforce - those who would like a vaccine – so, by stationing ourselves right here, then we are as close as possible to their workforce and we’ll go through two of their shift changes while we’re here.”

To help simplify the process even more, Samford said they decided not to require appointments. Additionally, advertisements and vaccine literature was put into different languages in order to ensure more people were receiving the information.

“We want to make sure that everyone can understand the messaging and what resources are available in order to make a decision and complete the paperwork in a language they feel comfortable with,” said Samford.

“I think they’ve done a great job in communicating with the community, getting the information out,” Billings said, adding that the KSARNG was happy to have been able to contribute to the efforts to help keep the Salina community safe and open. 

“This is an industrial part of town,” Billings said. “So these are the individuals who are working hard and keeping the economy going.”

LINDSBORG -- Bethany College is pleased to announce the Earl Bane Foundation is continuing its support of the Good Life Scholarship with a gift of $150,000.

The Good Life Scholarship is a tuition free scholarship opportunity available for high school students graduating from a McPherson County or Saline County high school.&nbsp;Students awarded the scholarship must live on campus and are responsible for their room and board costs and fees.

The scholarship was announced in December of 2016 and was first awarded during the fall 2017 semester.&nbsp;Bethany College was interested in investing in the surrounding community and ensuring every student in the surrounding area had the opportunity to receive college education.&nbsp;Since that time, Bethany College has had 286 students attend Bethany on the Good Life scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina South Theatre to present 'Radium Girls' next week

A unusually cold air mass will spread southward across the region for next week with possible frost and freezing temperatures affecting much of the area, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Continue to monitor later weather forecasts if you have sensitive plants outdoors that could be damaged or killed by these cold temperatures.

Members of the Smoky View 4-H Club participated in the Regional Model Meeting that was held on March 27 on a virtual meeting.&nbsp;

Model Meeting is a competition in 4-H among clubs. Clubs show to a judge how their club meetings are run. Depending on how well a club is run, the club gets a placing. If the placing is high enough, a club moves on to another level of competition. The Smoky View 4-H Club got a purple ribbon - which is the highest ranking - in the county Model Meeting competition, so the club moved on to Regional Model Meeting. The club then received a blue ribbon at the regional meeting.

The Smoky View 4-H Club members who participated in the Regional Model Meeting were Kayla Norberg, Jodie Norberg, Eian Pracht, Acacia Pracht, Maia Pracht, Aspen Trautwein, Adison Trautwein, Audrey Trautwein, Hensli Lofdahl, Remington Lofdahl, Emma Littich, and Eddie Littich.&nbsp;

In other Smoky View news, the Smoky View 4-H Club had a virtual club meeting on March 21.&nbsp;

	Members Karson Pihl and Krew Swisher presented a demonstration on how to make chocolate chip cookies, Kara Suhr showed the club how to make a Cricut shirt, and Kenzie Isaacson shared a video about her cat.&nbsp;

	Club members discussed and voted on business and will meet again on April 18.

The drive through distribution, hosted by Sunrise Presbyterian Church, is scheduled for 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park.

Those participating are required to bring a Saline County photo ID and proof of income. Those who are picking up commodities for someone else will need a photo ID and written authorization from that person.

All those participating will be required to wear face masks.

Commodities being distributed include grape juice, sliced peaches, dry lentils, frozen pork loin, orange juice, frozen chicken legs, frozen ground beef, frozen pulled pork, garbanzo beans, and almonds.

Income guidelines are $1,354 for one person with $479 added for each additional family member.

Loneliness is poison. It is deadly. Loneliness is&nbsp;literally&nbsp;killing us.

And if you just rolled your eyes, I’m especially talking to you.

Over the past couple of decades, researchers have repeatedly found a direct link between loneliness and a host of physical and psychological problems, like heart disease and mental illness.<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0033350617302731" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;Loneliness slowly dissolves us physically, mentally, and makes it impossible to be spiritually whole. Our culture has sped up and become increasingly frantic and chaotic. It’s tough to find time for new friendships, let alone time to invest in deep, meaningful relationships. We’ve managed to get by on sips of connection from the forced relationships of our kid’s friends’ parents or people at work, and the forced isolation of a global pandemic is highlighting a loneliness and mental health crisis like we haven’t seen in our lifetimes.&nbsp;

But here’s some good news: Regardless of how old you are, how much loss you have experienced, or how overwhelming it feels, you don’t have to live a lonely, isolated life. In fact, you&nbsp;must not&nbsp;life a lonely, isolated life.

Just like learning new ways to handle your money, learning how to connect and manage relationships requires a new set of skills. You have to be intentional, humble, and commit to learning new things. In fact, you&nbsp;can&nbsp;learn to cultivate new, whole, and authentic relationships with people. You can learn to trust and be trusted. You can enjoy depth and connection, but you have to make it a priority and do the work.

Make no mistake: You are worth the work. Your kids, your spouse, your friends, your business, and/or your community are all worth the work.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Here are five tangible and powerful practices that will help you find connection and relationships and live a joyful and whole life.

Who would be the first person you would call if you got word that your mom was sick? That you’d just lost your job? That you need help changing a tire in your driveway. If you’re like many Americans, you would have no one to call.

This should sound every personal and cultural alarm that we have. Finding connection first begins with admitting that you are lonely, with no one to call. That you have no one you can tell the good stuff, the bad stuff, and the painful stuff too. That you have no one to lean on.

Or you might have a ton of people to call, but you find yourself lonely in a crowded room. Either way, you’re lonely—and disconnected.&nbsp;

So, inhale deeply and say it out loud:&nbsp;I’m lonely. Then exhale.

Admitting you’re lonely doesn’t mean you’re weak or a loser. It means you’re human. I’ve felt lonely in a crowded room of people who love me, on stage in front of thousands of people, and even when surrounded by family at my own kitchen table.

If we aren’t honest about our loneliness, we run the risk of mislabeling our feelings and experiences. We might blame our feelings on any number of other things, from politics to neighbors, to people who have different beliefs. Instead of blaming or numbing, what you need is people on your team, someone to argue, laugh, eat, watch a game with—or maybe cry with.

Develop a plan to connect with people. Loneliness can quickly turn into a pity party if you’re waiting for others to reach out to you. Telephones, visits, and letter writing work both ways. You can be upset that no one has called or written, or you can begin reaching out.

If you’re in a season of life where you truly have few friends, you’ll have to get serious about coming up with a plan to meet people. Choose to be active in your search for connections. The be bold and go for it.

Additionally, be mindful about exhausting your friends and family with your problems and challenges. Other people don’t exist&nbsp;for&nbsp;you, they exist&nbsp;with&nbsp;you. Always remember: Listen more than you talk. Serve more than you are served.

Schedule in-person time with others

Depending on what studies you read, 70­–90% of communication is nonverbal.&nbsp;<a href="https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=Xt-YALu9CGwC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PR7&amp;dq=nonverbal+communication&amp;ots=5AGaQa3dmu&amp;sig=1-PGHrLmzEwTVjUTpKPTORsqUFg#v=onepage&amp;q=nonverbal%20communication&amp;f=false" target="_blank">2</a>&nbsp;In recent years we’ve outsourced almost all our communication to texting, emails, snapchats and DMs. Hear me clearly: Digital interactions are ways of passing information—not&nbsp;connecting. Relationships are about eye contact, presence, and when appropriate, touch. You can trade information in a digital format, but you cannot connect. Connecting in person (or though FaceTime, if necessary) is critical. Spend time face-to-face with the people you care about most on a regular basis.

Find a group to join, and commit to it

In addition to having a few close friends, consider joining groups in your community. Find people pursuing a common purpose, and commit to it.

Visit different groups and explore, but once you’ve landed on something, commit. Show up and keep showing up. Even if you deem some of the people annoying. Especially if they don’t look like you or you find they are way better at it than you. Stop comparing and competing and instead, say YES! and just keep showing up.

Be intentional about social media choices

They told us social media was going to help us to stay connected with our loved ones, meet new people, and deepen our relationships.

Social media does not help me remain connected, in a meaningful way, to people I love and care about. It gives me information, not connection. These platforms use fine-tuned algorithms that are designed to keep us scrolling – not connecting. In fact, there’s alarming evidence that social media use actually increases feelings of depression and loneliness.<a href="https://guilfordjournals.com/doi/abs/10.1521/jscp.2018.37.10.751" target="_blank">3</a>

How many of you have hundreds of “friends” on Facebook, but no one to help you move your couch? If you’re going to use social media, be careful about when you’re on it and how long you access it.

I know COVID-19 brought with it many things we never expected, including lengthy physical separation from family and friends. However, deep, rewarding relationships are still possible. They may take a little more effort and intentionality than before, but they’re worth it. You can become a better friend—and find better friends—if you’re ready and willing to take the next step!

On April 17, 1970, Apollo 13 astronauts James A. Lovell, Fred W. Haise and Jack Swigert splashed down safely in the Pacific, four days after a ruptured oxygen tank crippled their spacecraft while en route to the moon.

We are happy to share that no additional deaths due to COVID-19have been reported since March 22. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have three patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

There have been 19 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on April 14, which marks the highest number of new cases in our community in over a month and brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 6,138.

The Health Department staff are now&nbsp;actively monitoring 52 cases.&nbsp;At least 5,978 people have recovered,&nbsp;but sadly&nbsp;108 members of our community have lost their lives to this deadly virus. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:
