Last night's storms brought with them multiple power outages within the Salina city limits and in the immediate surrounding area.

According to Evergy's Gina Penzig, slightly more than 4,000 customers in Salina were without power at the height of the outages. 

Evergy began receiving outage reports at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday and completed power restoration by approximately 1 p.m. today, Penzig said.

High winds that caused multiple broken power poles, coupled with lightning strikes to Evergy equipment, were to blame for the outages, she said. The winds, lightning, and heavy rains also challenged Evergy's ability to immediately respond to the outages, however the company brought in crews from other areas to help local crews with the power restoration, Penzig said.

The issues with broken Evergy poles also knocked out power to some DSO Electric Cooperative customers, some for a number of hours. As of 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, 1,450 DSO customers were without power.

In a tweet shared on the cooperative's website, DSO wrote, "Evergy needs to replace six poles in the transmission line before they can energize the I-135 and Bennington substations.  They are hoping to be able to back-feed Minneapolis after they replace three of the poles."

Before noon today, electricity was restored to all DSO customers, the company reported.

Power restored to nearly 5,500 after storms blow through

Rain was plentiful as storms rolled through the area Wednesday night and early this morning.

At the Salina Regional Airport, 1.20 inches of rain was reported for the 24-hour period that ended at 7 a.m. Additionally, in southeast Salina, near the Eagle Radio studios, 1.50 inches was reported.

With the rain came strong winds. At 6:53 p.m. Wednesday, Salina Regional Airport reported sustained winds at 45 mph with gusts to 59 mph.

Kansas State University students earn spring semester honors

On May 13, club members from the Smoky View 4-H Club attended a district-wide virtual 4-H project meeting about pollinators and their importance in the environment.&nbsp;

	Jason Graves, a Horticulture Agent in the Central Kansas Extension District, taught 4-H members about what pollinators are and what they do. He also explained why it is important to have pollinators and how people can grow&nbsp; plants and supply pollinators with homes.&nbsp;

	Graves talked about the habits of bees, such as how some bees nest in sticks, the ground, or in tree stumps. He also said that some bees will take parts of leaves to use for their nests.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

	Graves also said that spending time outside every day helps people to have a better mood.&nbsp;&nbsp;

	The Smoky View 4-H Club had no club meeting in May. Its next meeting is June 20.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;Andy Sutter, executive director of Village Manor in Abilene, has been elected to the board of LeadingAge Kansas.

LeadingAge Kansas members voted in six new board members to lead the association at their annual business meeting on April 22.

“The slate of candidates was outstanding,” President/CEO Debra Zehr said. “These individuals will lead our association into the future of our field.”

LeadingAge Kansas is an association of 160 not-for-profit aging services providers dedicated to serving the needs of aging Kansans.

“Andy brings valuable quality-focused skills and deep experience in person-centered care that will help advance the work of the LeadingAge Kansas Board and its membership now and in the future,” said Zehr.

Additional thunderstorm activity with very heavy is expected to occur with very heavy rain over the next six hours.

One fan per household will be distributed at the Salvation Army Community Center, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue, from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Thursday while the supply lasts.

If you plan to pick up a fan, the Salvation Army asks that you please bring proof of residence with you.

On their websites and other marketing materials, the companies say their dietary supplements treat, mitigate, or prevent infertility and other reproductive health conditions. For example, one supplement said it can “boost your chance of pregnancy or improve your IVF success rate.” But these claims are not backed by solid science. The FDA and FTC sent warning letters to these companies telling them to remove unproven claims from their marketing materials — and the FTC is watching to make sure they comply.Deceptive claims about fertility and other supplements peddle promises that can play on your emotions.
