UPDATE 7 p.m. Wednesday: The severe thunderstorm warning for Saline County has expired.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Saline County that is in effect until 7 p.m.

At 6:06 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 7 miles northeast of Kanopolis, moving east at 30 mph.

60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail are forecast.

Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

This severe thunderstorm will be near Brookville around 6:25 p.m. CDT. Other locations in the path of this severe thunderstorm include Salina and Smolan.

At 5:43 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Ellsworth, moving east at 20 mph. Another severe storm was located 5 miles south of Lincoln, moving northeast at 15 mph.

UPDATE: T-storm warning for Ellsworth, SE Lincoln counties expires

UPDATE 6 p.m. Wednesday: The tornado warning has been allowed to expire.

A tornado warning has been issued for southwestern Ellsworth County. It is in effect until 6 p.m.

At 5:16 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Holyrood, or 9 miles northeast of Claflin, moving east-southeast at 25 mph.

Locations impacted include Ellsworth, Kanopolis, Holyrood, Geneseo and Lorraine.

Negotiations between USD 305 and NEA-Salina are continuing after both sides exchanged their first round of proposals Tuesday.

While no formal settlement was reached, the parties did tentatively agree to the following, according to information provided by USD 305.

●Changes to the documentation required for horizontal movement on the salary schedule

●Changes to the language regarding the early notification incentives

●Elimination of copy fees for copies of personnel files

According to the district, proposals still on the table are suggested modifications to non-individual plan time, an increase in pay for teachers substituting for teachers, the establishment of maximum class sizes, and the establishment of a minimum winter break. 

The next meeting for negotiations is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. June 2 at the district office, USD 305 noted in a news release.

Teacher contract negotiations continue at Salina USD 305

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly and Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz today announced that more than $42 million will support 30 transportation construction projects across Kansas through an expanded list of recipients of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Cost Share Program for Spring 2021.

Cost Share is a component of the Kelly administration’s 10-year, bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, or IKE. Cost Share is designed to help both rural and urban areas advance transportation projects to improve safety, support job retention and growth, relieve congestion and improve access and mobility.

“Infrastructure projects like the ones funded through Cost Share are a perfect example of how government can make smart investments that not only make our economy more dynamic and competitive, but also make Kansas a better place to live, work, and play,” Kelly said. “Through this $42 million investment, 30 communities from every corner of our state will have safer roads, increased access to outdoor recreation, and the opportunity to modernize important historical landmarks.”

KDOT took advantage of 2020 federal coronavirus relief funds by doubling the available Cost Share funding for this round. Selection criteria was adjusted to take into account hardships caused by the pandemic and points were added to communities that endured above-average economic loss.

KDOT is investing $21 million in this cycle of Cost Share with recipients contributing a 50/50 match of $21 million.

Lorenz said demand for Cost Share transportation dollars remains strong, especially after the “long, tough year we’ve been through.” She said 117 communities requested more than $103 million in funding for this, the fourth round of the Cost Share program.

“Despite that tough year, I couldn’t be more impressed with the record level of local contribution – proving we are stronger when we work together,” Lorenz said.&nbsp;“Thanks to the KDOT team and our local partners, we are moving quickly to expedite the delivery of projects.”

Red Cross schedules blood drives to help avoid a shortage

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a work utility trailer in the southern part of the county.

The trailer, belonging to Hecker Construction, of Salina, was stolen from a job site in the 6500 block of Coronado Heights Road sometime between May 10 and Thursday, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The trailer, valued at $4,500 is a white, 14-16-foot by 8.5-foot 2006 Doolittle cargo trailer with double axles and a 12x4-inch puncture hole in the front. Additionally, the wheels do not protrude from the sides, Melander said.

A dirt/cement compactor with a new Honda motor, valued at $2,000, was inside the trailer, he added. 

Melander urged anyone who has recently seen the trailer or knows of its whereabouts to call the Saline County Sheriff's Office at (785) 826-6500.

Work trailer belonging to Salina business stolen in southern part of county

An endowment to benefit Sunset Elementary School has been established, thanks to two local donors.

The Horejsi Charitable Foundation, Inc. and the Looney Family Charitable Fund have made lead gifts of $10,000 each to establish the Sunset Elementary School Endowment Fund at the Salina Education Foundation. The endowment fund is intended to provide long term, ongoing classroom and student support as determined by the building principal at Sunset Elementary School.

In establishing the fund, the charitable organizations hope that others will feel inspired to help build the endowment for the maximum benefit of students at Sunset Elementary. 

“We deeply appreciate the generosity of the Horejsi Charitable Foundation and the Looney Family Fund for the difference they are making in the lives of children attending Sunset Elementary. School-specific endowments like this are a great way to help fulfill our mission by providing ongoing financial resources to enhance opportunities for our students,” said Michael Chambers, Salina Education Foundation’s executive director.

Sunset Principal Lonny Schropp who is retiring this year, said, “I am so grateful to the donors who have established the Sunset Elementary School Endowment Fund. These funds will directly benefit student’s lives by providing consistent financial support to help meet the needs of individual students as well as enhancing classroom experiences”. 

Brandon Cheeks takes the helm at Sunset beginning July 1.

Police are looking for a pickup and the person who stole it while its owner was mowing at a west Salina bank Tuesday morning.

Daniel Sauber, 70, of Salina, was mowing at First Bank Kansas, 1333 W. Crawford Street. His blue 1999 Chevrolet S10 pickup was parked in the parking lot with the keys inside, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

Surveillance video from the area shows a subject approach the truck at 11:26 a.m., get in, and drive off southbound on Duvall Avenue.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible across central Kansas late this evening and tonight, as a complex of storms moves east-southeastward off the High Plains. 

The higher probabilities for severe weather will be along Interstate 70, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. 

The expected storm hazards are damaging winds of 60 to 75 mph, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. 60 to 75 mph winds can produce damage similar to a weak tornado.

A flash flood watch has been issued for some counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood watch in effect Wednesday evening through Thursday morning for the following counties in our area.

A very humid airmass is forecast to move into north central and   northeast Kansas overnight as thunderstorms develop. These storms   may be very efficient rainfall producers with some locations   receiving 1 to 3 inches of rain in a few hours. This rain could   lead to flash flooding.

Local student receive academic honors at Rockhurst

I traveled to Washington, D.C. this past week. It was really the first time I had traveled in more than a year, and it was the first time I had taken a plane since the pandemic hit us over a year ago. I have had both of my shots so I am fully vaccinated, but I must say I had a little trepidation about traveling. The mask mandate was still in full force in the airports and on the planes, and it was followed by nearly everyone at the airport and everyone on the plane. When we arrived in D.C., we could go without them outside, but they were required indoors. Was it like traveling before we were told to stay at home? No — it was different. But there was an air of the idea that things were getting more back to normal. Now you could argue about what normal is in terms of D.C., and I would probably not argue back, but it was good to get closer to life pre-pandemic. We are doing the same thing at Kansas Farm Bureau. Staff is back in the office in Manhattan, meetings are being planned and held in-person, and I think we are all very relieved about that. Zoom meetings are good in some instances, but they can never replace face-to-face meetings for effectiveness. I hope you saw the announcement about our Big Tent Reunion starting June 1 around the state, and I hope you plan on attending the one closest to you. The meetings are planned as a way for all of us to reconnect and enjoy just being in the presence of fellow farmers and ranchers. No strings, no business to conduct, just spending time with old friends. Word is also getting out about the Summer Summit and Young Farmers and Ranchers conferences in Manhattan the last week in July. I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to those events and seeing even more friends from around the state, attending great workshops and, most importantly, getting back to normal. I have had that week highlighted on my calendar for a long time. There was a time I was afraid it would not happen, but I am here to tell you it is full-steam ahead. To register or learn more about all the events planned this summer, visit www.kfb.org.s Or if you are technologically challenged like me, call your county office. Watch for the announcement of more meetings because they are coming as we start to ramp up and catch up from all we have missed over the last year. I know I cannot wait to get back to normal. Who thought we would miss shaking hands so much? It’s time to come out of the darkness that was the past year and enjoy a breath of fresh air, and that is literal because we will not have to breathe through a mask. Life is good, and it is about to get better.

INSIGHT: Summer gatherings

Today is Wednesday, May 26, the 146th day of 2021. There are 219 days left in the year. 

On May 26, 1940, Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of some 338,000 Allied troops from Dunkirk, France, began during World War II. 

In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a measure creating the Montana Territory. 

In 1938, the House Un-American Activities Committee was established by Congress. 

In 1954, explosions rocked the aircraft carrier USS Bennington off Rhode Island, killing 103 sailors. (The initial blast was blamed on leaking catapult fluid ignited by the flames of a jet.)

In 1972, President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev signed the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in Moscow. (The U.S. withdrew from the treaty in 2002.) 

In 1977, George Willig scaled the outside of the South Tower of New York's World Trade Center; he was arrested at the top of the 110-story building.

In 1981, 14 people were killed when a Marine jet crashed onto the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz off Florida. 

In 1994, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were married in the Dominican Republic. (The marriage ended in 1996.) 

In 1998, the U.S. Supreme Court made it far more difficult for police to be sued by people hurt during high-speed chases. The Supreme Court also ruled that Ellis Island, historic gateway for millions of immigrants, was mainly in New Jersey, not New York. 

In 2004, nearly a decade after the Oklahoma City bombing, Terry Nichols was found guilty of 161 state murder charges for helping carry out the attack. (Nichols later received 161 consecutive life sentences.) 

In 2005, President George W. Bush received Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at the White House; Bush called Abbas a courageous democratic reformer and bolstered his standing at home with $50 million in assistance. 

In 2009, President Barack Obama nominated federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. California's Supreme Court upheld the Proposition 8 gay marriage ban but said the 18,000 same-sex weddings that had taken place before the prohibition passed were still valid.

In 2015, challenging Hillary Rodham Clinton from the left, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders formally kicked off his Democratic presidential bid in Burlington, Vermont, with a pitch to liberals to join him in a "political revolution" to transform the nation's economy and politics.

Ten years ago: Congress passed a four-year extension of post-Sept. 11 powers contained in the Patriot Act to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists; President Barack Obama, in France, signed the measure using an autopen machine minutes before the provisions were set to expire at midnight. Ratko Mladic, the brutal Bosnian Serb general suspected of leading the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys, was arrested after a 16-year manhunt. (Mladic was extradited to face trial in The Hague, Netherlands.)

Five years ago: President Barack Obama, visiting Japan, said foreign leaders were "rattled" by Donald Trump and had good reason to feel that way, as he accused the presumptive Republican presidential nominee of ignorance about world affairs. First lady Michelle Obama told graduates at a Native American high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to take pride in their history and cultures at a time when she said the "loudest voices in the national conversation" suggested turning away from the tribal values that were part of their education.

One year ago: Minneapolis police issued a statement saying George Floyd had died after a "medical incident," and that he physically resisted officers and appeared to be in medical distress; minutes after the statement was released, bystander video was posted online. Protests over Floyd's death began, with tense skirmishes developing between protesters and Minneapolis police. Four police officers who were involved in Floyd's arrest were fired.
