DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Friday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Freightliner semi hauling two trailer and driven by Troy D.&nbsp;Hilsdon, 56, Blue Springs, Missouri, was&nbsp;was eastbound on Interstate 70 two miles west of Abilene.

The semi traveled off the right shoulder into the south ditch and rolled onto&nbsp; its top. EMS transported&nbsp;Hilsdon to the hospital in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

A semi was involved in an accident and the vehicle was on the south side of the Interstate.&nbsp; The KHP has not reported any injuries as of 6:15p.m. Friday.

Abilene welcomes new Holiday Inn Express & Suites, former property rebranded

Governor Laura Kelly, joined by Kansas Secretary of Labor Amber Shultz, announced on Friday the launch of the Kansas Department of Labor’s (KDOL) new online system for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. The system is available through&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fkansasui.gov%2F/1/01010193550e4eca-bed262f0-f010-4d84-aeb6-29223a6be783-000000/WaWg8qx_6PkebA4cXzqo746Kd_sDN8bpeJrIeURfINI=380">KansasUI.gov</a>.

Governor Kelly prioritized enhancing KDOL’s outdated unemployment system and emphasized the need for a comprehensive upgrade to improve performance and reliability.

“The upgrade is the culmination of a three-year project to modernize our state’s UI system,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The new system will transform the experience of Kansans who need UI benefits as well as the employers and state agencies who use the system. I commend KDOL for working through this process to improve service for all Kansans.”

Established in the late 1970s, the system has struggled to keep pace with the advances in modern technology and the demand for services. Because of its age, issues have included slow processing times, frequent technical glitches, and difficulties handling high claims volumes. These problems led to delays in benefits and frustration among claimants. These challenges were made even more significant during the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansans applying for unemployment benefits will notice that the upgraded system uses easy-to-understand language and a modern interface. The system also offers more robust self-service options so claimants can file online and at their own pace, decreasing their need to call the UI Contact Center. Employers will find enhanced reporting capabilities and an improved interface. Both claimants and employers will appreciate heightened security measures to decrease fraud.

The launch of the Unemployment Insurance Technology Enhancement (UITE) project is a win for Kansas because it demonstrates the state’s dedication to responsive and effective workforce support.

“Launching KansasUI.gov demonstrates KDOL’s commitment to providing superior services,”&nbsp;Kansas Secretary of Labor Amber Shultz said. “We know adapting to the new system will take a little time, but we are confident that users will have a good experience, and our team is ready to respond to issues quickly and continue to improve.” &nbsp;

KDOL communicated changes to Kansas employers and current claimants through its website, email, social media, mail, and the news media. The agency sent 9,000 emails to active claimants and employers, mailed 80,000 postcards to employers, and emailed state agencies and legislators about the upgrade and to educate them about how to assist Kansans who have questions about the process. Human resources staff from across the state also had the opportunity to join a webinar hosted by the agency to learn about the UITE.&nbsp;

Gov. Kelly announces launch of modernized unemployment benefits system

Between Monday afternoon, November 18, 2024 and Tuesday morning, November 19,2024, unknown suspect(s), gained entry to a residence under construction in the 2900 block of Malibu, Salina, Kansas. The suspect(s) then stole multiple tools from the job site.

The stolen tools included the following Milwaukee tools: a Milwaukee tool box, a drywall gun, a drywall cut tool, a nail gun and a sawzall. DeWalt tools were taken: a DeWalt tool bag, jig saw, circular saw, router and batteries. 

Also taken were a Metabo grinder, Bosch laser measurer, and Zircon stud finder. The total loss was valued at more than $2,500.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Nov. 22

Approximately 800 families will receive free groceries this Thanksgiving, thanks to a generous giveaway hosted by <a href="https://www.thearksalina.com/about-us">The Ark Church</a> in Salina. The event will take place on Saturday morning, Nov. 23, at Dean Evans Stadium, 851 Markley Road.

Each participating car will receive a variety of groceries, including chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, cereal, potatoes, bread, peanut butter, ground beef, pizzas, canned corn, peaches, bottled water, and more.

The initiative is part of The Ark Church’s mission to serve the community and live out the words of Isaiah 58:10: "Feed the hungry and help those in trouble."

Paisley Millspaugh, the Operations Director at The Ark Church, said the decision to increase the giveaway from 600 to 800 vehicles is a testament to the congregation, church Pastors John Huseman and his wife, Lindsay.&nbsp;

"Last year, unfortunately, we did have to turn some cars away. It just broke our hearts to see us turn cars away. Pastor John told our congregation this year, 'We want to do 800 cars. We believe we can do this.' And we were able to get enough funds to pay for 800 vehicles," Millspaugh said.&nbsp;

It costs roughly $120 to sponsor two weeks' worth of groceries. Millspaugh said the church purchases through a food wholesaler. In total, the giveaway is expected to benefit 4,000 people. With the help of congregation members at The Ark Church of Salina, the church raised the roughly $96,000 needed to purchase food for 800 vehicles.&nbsp;

About 500 volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. to bless the food and gather before staffing their stations. Millspaugh said finding volunteers for this giveaway is not difficult.

"We opened up our app for volunteers to sign up, and it shows all the different volunteer opportunities. There are 500 spots. They were filled in under a week," Millspaugh said. "Pastors John and Lindsay love the community so much, and that is seen in everything that they do and say. I think the congregation has learned from them, but they also want to love our community just as well. That desire is a little bit contagious. This is not something you hear of or see often in our communities, especially outreaches of this size."

Food distribution will begin at 8:45 a.m. with 20 serving stations. Event organizers recommend arriving before 8:45 a.m. because the line will grow in length quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It's just so amazing to see all the volunteers gather and we huddle, and then they just start walking to their lines. We have had people say. 'It gives me chills to see that and see the group dispersed that way,'" Millspaugh said. "If you're in need, and you see all these people show up to help you and stand out in the cold or stand out in the rain or the snow, or whatever the case may be, because we're there rain or shine — that there's a level of hope. It so much more than food."

There is no delivery or holding back of groceries if someone does not have a car

It just broke our hearts to see us turn cars away. Pastor John told our congregation this year, 'We want to do 800 cars. We believe we can do this.' And we were able to get enough funds to pay for 800 vehicles," Millspaugh said.&nbsp;It costs roughly $120 to sponsor two weeks' worth of groceries. Millspaugh said the church purchases through a food wholesaler. In total, the giveaway is expected to benefit 4,000 people. With the help of congregation members at The Ark Church of Salina, the church raised the roughly $96,000 needed to purchase food for 800 vehicles.&nbsp;About 500 volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. to bless the food and gather before staffing their stations. Millspaugh said finding volunteers for this giveaway is not difficult."We opened up our app for volunteers to sign up, and it shows all the different volunteer opportunities. There are 500 spots. They were filled in under a week," Millspaugh said. "Pastors John and Lindsay love the community so much, and that is seen in everything that they do and say. I think the congregation has learned from them, but they also want to love our community just as well. That desire is a little bit contagious. This is not something you hear of or see often in our communities, especially outreaches of this size."Food distribution will begin at 8:45 a.m. with 20 serving stations. Event organizers recommend arriving before 8:45 a.m. because the line will grow in length quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;"It's just so amazing to see all the volunteers gather and we huddle, and then they just start walking to their lines. We have had people say. 'It gives me chills to see that and see the group dispersed that way,'" Millspaugh said. "If you're in need, and you see all these people show up to help you and stand out in the cold or stand out in the rain or the snow, or whatever the case may be, because we're there rain or shine — that there's a level of hope. Held annually the Friday before Black Friday, Pink Friday aims to shift attention to community-centered shopping and celebrate small businesses.

Leslie Bishop, executive director of Salina Downtown Inc., emphasized the importance of shopping small and supporting local businesses.

"The best gift you can give is to shop small and support our local businesses in downtown Salina," Bishop said. "For every one dollar spent locally, 70 cents stays local."

Shoppers are invited to visit a variety of participating stores in downtown Salina, each offering unique products and experiences. Featured businesses include Redefine Nutrition, Apron Strings, Red Fern Booksellers, Blushe Boutique, and many more, all of which will have special offerings for the event.

This year’s theme, “Pink is the New Black,” highlights the importance of supporting local establishments and keeping holiday spending within the community.

Upcoming film showtimes at Salina Art Center Cinema

A slow-speed pursuit through Salina neighborhoods Wednesday evening ended with the arrest of a 22-year-old man suspected of being involved in a recent hit-and-run accident.

At approximately 6 p.m. on November 20, a Salina Police Department (SPD) officer spotted a blue Buick LeSabre connected to a minor hit-and-run that happened on November 13 near Ohio Street and Prescott Avenue. When the officer attempted to make a traffic stop in the parking lot of 1118 North Ninth Street, the vehicle continued driving.

The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Colton Allen Miller of Salina, led SPD officers on a low-speed pursuit through residential streets, never exceeding 30 mph. 

According to Salina Police Department Cpt. James Feldman, Miller stopped at all stop signs and used turn signals before eventually pulling into a parking stall at 1846 North Ninth Street, where he was arrested without incident.

Miller faces charges for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving while suspended. He was also found to have two active warrants for failure to appear and probation violation. Miller denied knowledge of the November 13 hit-and-run, which remains under investigation.

The November 13 hit-and-run involved a 2014 Ford Taurus driven by a 75-year-old woman from Sylvan Grove. Feldman said the Buick struck the Taurus from behind, and both vehicles pulled into the Braum’s parking lot. The male driver of the Buick, allegedly Miller, reportedly asked the woman not to contact law enforcement before leaving the scene without providing his information.

No injuries were reported, and the Taurus sustained only minor damage.&nbsp;

Salina man arrested after slow-speed pursuit possibly linked to hit-and-run

The Abilene Police Department is currently conducting an investigation involving a former staff member of USD. #435. Once the investigation is concluded, all reports will be forwarded to the Dickinson County Attorney’s Office for charging consideration.&nbsp;

According to a statement issued by USD #435, "The Abilene Police Department is investigating communication between a student and a teacher, whose resignation was approved by the Abilene Public Schools’ Board of Education on Monday, November 18, 2024."

"The Abilene School District is cooperating with local law enforcement.&nbsp; Once the investigation by law enforcement is complete, the district will conduct a Title IX investigation of its own.&nbsp; In the interest of ensuring a fair and impartial investigation of the allegations, USD #435 will not comment further about this issue at this time. However, Abilene Public Schools, USD #435’s, first priority is to protect the students of our district."

No other information was released at this time.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01)&nbsp;spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives&nbsp;for the first time since Americans delivered an Election Day mandate by electing President Donald J. Trump and Republican majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.&nbsp;

During the speech, Rep. Mann laid out his vision for the 119th Congress, including the need to reduce and reprioritize federal spending, secure the border, end the weaponization of the federal government, and spur America’s economic growth.

Below are Mann's remarks, as prepared for delivery.

"Mr. Speaker, when I last spoke on this floor, I laid out the choice the country had before us. On November 5th, 2024, America made its choice loud and clear. America gave Washington, D.C. a mandate, endorsing the greatest political comeback in American history with the election of President Donald J. Trump as the 47th&nbsp;President of the United States and of Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

"Kansans in the Big First District rejected four more years of the chaos we have experienced with President Biden and Vice President Harris. They voted for a government that works for the people and makes their lives easier, not one that handcuffs them and their families with overreaching regulations. They voted for a government that enforces the law and seeks commonsense solutions, not open-border policies&nbsp;that put our national security at risk. They voted to reduce federal spending, to end the weaponization of the federal government once and for all, and for our future.

"When I came to Congress almost four years ago, America was strong. Our streets were safe, and our border was secure. House Republicans and President Trump had passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,&nbsp;putting more money in the pockets of American families and spurring economic growth that led to the strongest U.S. economy in decades. The Trump Administration had spearheaded historic trade&nbsp;agreements and peace agreements across the globe that kept America competitive and secure.

"Rather than capitalizing on that momentum and strength, the Biden-Harris Administration wasted four years pushing through partisan, trillion-dollar spending packages and using the federal government&nbsp;to air its grievances with the previous Administration.&nbsp;And America said no more.

"Mr. Speaker, those days are long gone. This House Republican majority, alongside President Trump and the incoming Senate Republican majority, are ready to restore American greatness and the American&nbsp;dream. We are committed to securing a future American families can feel optimistic about.

"When I ran for Congress, I promised to fight for agriculture and our conservative Kansas values. That commitment stands, and while there is a lot of work to do to get the nation back on track, I humbly&nbsp;accept that challenge. I am committed to working with my colleagues to unleash American energy and finally rein in energy prices that have crippled American families for the past four years. I will fight to make&nbsp;the 2017 tax cuts permanent and once again empower working- and middle-class families who have been strangled by the record-level inflation caused by Washington Democrat spending. I will work for commonsense policies that don’t empower the Mexican cartels or incentivize illegal immigration. Americans deserve an immigration system that makes it easier for people to come here legally and more&nbsp;difficult for people to come here illegally. That should not be controversial.

Mann speaks on House floor about Election Day mandate

By NATE KING Salina Post Santa is still checking over the Naughty and Nice List, but Christmas time is here for the "elves" decorating Downtown Salina in holiday cheer.

On Tuesday, with a truck full of tree branches, large gold and red ornaments, and strands containing thousands of lights, UltraShine Holiday Lights owner Chris Rios and three helpers set up the 18-foot-tall Mayor’s Christmas tree in Campbell Plaza.

"Many people may notice that Jose Peppers is moving into that area where the Prickly Pear formally was located, but I don't want anyone to be afraid that we won't have our Christmas tree lighting because we will," said Leslie Bishop Executive Director of Salina Downtown Inc.&nbsp;

The Mayor's Christmas Tree will serve as the Salina community Christmas tree and will be officially lit by Salina Mayor Bill Longbine on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. in Campbell Plaza, 126 South Santa Fe Avenue. After Longbine lights the tree, the Salina Youth Choir will perform singing a few Christmas carols.

"Salina Downtown Inc. is so excited to have a community Christmas tree in downtown Salina in Campbell Plaza. We are grateful to our community sponsors, the City of Salina and First Bank Kansas, for helping SDI bring the tree downtown again this year," Bishop said.

Despite the chilly breeze, Rios and his team—Josh Rodriguez, Brendan Anderson, Taygen Watson, and Rios—worked with a purpose as they set up the holiday tree, while Hutton Construction crews continued work on the Jose Pepper's outdoor seating area. 

The four-man crew consists of two Ellsworth Jr./Sr. High School graduates—Rodriguez and Anderson—Salina firefighter Watson, and former Salina firefighter Rios. Together, they specialize in custom designing and installing holiday displays for customers throughout the year. 

"We didn't have any issues working alongside Hutton," Rios said.&nbsp;

Rios has been decorating commercial and residential properties for the holidays for approximately nine years and covers an area stretching from Plainville to Great Bend to Inman to near Abilene.

"I had a call last year on December 22 that we went out and installed," Rios said. "The average house takes us about an hour to install."

The 18 foot tall Mayor's Christmas Tree is topped by a 3 foot tall topper, making it stand at a whopping 21 feet. The tree is decorated with dozens of ornaments and 7,000 LED lights. Rios and his team also decorated the trees that line Santa Fe Avenue.&nbsp;

"It took us between eight or nine hours to get all those trees decorated and lit," Rios said.&nbsp;

Rios said he has always helped put up Christmas lights around the holidays with his family. Rodriguez and Anderson said this is their first year helping Rios with lights. 

Anderson said the work is busier than he thought.

"We get calls every day about people wanting lights, so we stay pretty busy, and they [calls for lights] are starting to speed up even more now," Anderson said.

The team began installing lights on homes as early as October 1. According to Rodriguez, Ultrashine offers a solution for those who want to be prepared for the holidays but prefer to hold off on spreading the cheer until after Halloween.

"For early October we don't turn the lights on usually until we go back to the houses and turn their lights on when they're ready for them. So they're not on all of October," Rodriguez said.&nbsp;

Anderson described working for Rios and Ultrashine as both enjoyable and fulfilling. He said the job offers a unique sense of satisfaction, especially seeing homes transform for the holidays.&nbsp;

At the conclusion of the holiday season, they take down the displays and store them for the following holiday season. The crew also does maintenance on the displays as needed.&nbsp;

When they aren't making peoples homes bright for the holidays, Rios does permanent lights on commercial structures and houses, landscape lighting, and wedding and event lighting.&nbsp;

Ultra Shine Holiday Lights decorates Salina Mayor's Christmas Tree in Campbell Plaza

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, millions of Americans are preparing to cook the turkey, the centerpiece of the holiday feast. To ensure a safe and stress-free holiday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers essential tips for thawing your turkey to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Refrigerator thawing is the safest method, maintaining a consistent, safe temperature throughout the process. Allow about 24 hours of thawing time for every 4-5 pounds of turkey. Keep the turkey in its original wrapping and place it on a tray in the refrigerator to catch any drips.

Cold water thawing is faster than refrigerator thawing but requires more attention. Submerge the wrapped turkey in cold tap water and change the water every 30 minutes to keep it cold. Plan for about 30 minutes of thawing time per pound.

Microwave thawing is the quickest method but is best suited for smaller portions or specific cuts. Follow your microwave’s instructions carefully and cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

The USDA advises against thawing a turkey on the countertop, in hot water, or outdoors in places like the garage or porch. These methods can promote bacterial growth and increase the risk of foodborne illness.

Ensure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, as recommended by the USDA. Scammers are becoming more deceptive thanks to technology. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports scammers used phone, in-person, and online tactics to cheat customers out of more than&nbsp;<a>$10 billion</a>&nbsp;nationwide last year.&nbsp;<a>That’s</a>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a>$2 billion</a>&nbsp;increase over the previous year. Saline County Jail Bookings, Nov. 20

GEARY COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 5p.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Subaru Outback driven by April M.&nbsp;Kulczyk, 45, Junction City, was northbound on U.S. 77 in west-central Junction City.

GEARY COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 5p.m. Tuesday in Geary County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Subaru Outback driven by April M.&nbsp;Kulczyk, 45, Junction City, was northbound on U.S. 77 in west-central Junction City.The SUV crossed the center line and struck a 2009 Infiniti G37 driven by Kaleb M&nbsp;Jones-Bransford, 21, Ponca City, Oklahoma.After impact, the SUV continued northbound, again crossing the center line and colliding head-on with a 2019 Ford Fusion driven by&nbsp; Bradley S. Linton, 56, Enterprise.&nbsp;After the second collision, the Ford came to rest in the west ditch while the Subaru came to rest in the northbound lane of traffic. The Infiniti traveled into the west ditch and struck a guardrail.Linton was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Johnson's Funeral Home. EMS transported Kulczyk to&nbsp;Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka. Jones-Bransford was not injured. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
