SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Kia Sportage driven by Jeffrey Lee Sims, 50,&nbsp; Manhattan, was westbound in the 1600 Block of West State Street. 

The SUV traveled off the south side of the roadway and into a ditch.&nbsp; The vehicle continued along the embankment, traveled off the edge of the ravine and came to rest in the creek.

EMS transported Sims to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Imagine this: A student is immersed in cutting-edge technology, learning from industry experts who bring years of research and real-world experience into the classroom. They sit at a desk in a traditional setting, and they can see their fellow students sitting beside them, intently listening as an instructor writes on a board or discusses the lesson of the day.

What unfolds next is anything but ordinary.

At the end of class, the student slides off their virtual reality, or VR, headset, and opens their eyes not to a classroom, but to their living room, a work office or even a coffee shop.

This isn’t a vision for the future – it’s a reality today for many students at Kansas State University Salina.

Through the integration of virtual environments, K-State Salina is redefining the educational experience, connecting learners across the globe in real time.

“ Through these VR headsets, we have a virtual classroom that we can step into with a whiteboard that we can draw on," said Henry Kerschen, senior in computer systems technology, Olathe. “This campus has done a great job of preparing all of us to have that real, thoughtful development as we’ve worked," Kerschen continued. "What has been that for me is a fully comprehensive experience and it’s given me a good base foundation of information that I can really take with me anywhere.”

K-AIRES will be hub for cutting-edge education, Pure Imagination Studios

As Kansas State University’s College of Aviation and Technology, the Salina campus is setting the standard for technical education, especially in the aerospace and technology industries. Through its expertise in pioneering technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality and cyber-physical systems, K-State Salina is shaping the future of education and advancing the mission of Kansas State University as the next-generation land-grant university.

“The instructors at K-State Salina have done a great job of introducing us to new technology,” Kerschen said. “As students, we have this unique opportunity to play with VR headsets and engage in that immersive experience, and we have a lot of tools that allow us to get hands-on with our own educational experiments.”

In August, K-State Salina broke ground on facilities for its new, one-of-a-kind partnership with Pure Imagination Studios, a global leader in immersive entertainment.

This collaboration led to the creation of the K-AIRES center, a $41 million, 47,500-square-foot facility that will be a hub for cutting-edge education and innovation. K-AIRES will house a production lab for Pure Imagination Studios, which has worked on high-profile projects for Netflix, DreamWorks, FOX, The LEGO Group, Marvel Entertainment and others.

“Our students will be working alongside Pure Imagination employees and creatives learning how the industry works,” said Michael Oetken, assistant professor in immersive systems design and director of K-AIRES. “They’ll get to work on projects with Pure Imagination Labs as well as engage in experiential learning with K-State Salina faculty. It’s an exciting new chapter in applied learning on our campus and a great way to gain an education.”

K-State is not waiting for construction to be complete. Students are already learning how to apply advanced technologies daily, from cyber-physical systems to how software and data components interact with the world.

Students are already learning how to autonomously navigate drones through programming, control systems, computer vision and image processing.

“At K-State Salina, we are changing the landscape of education,” said Balaji Balasubramaniam, assistant professor in computer systems technology and graduate program coordinator for the machine learning and autonomous systems certificate. “We are giving the students the experience of using these advanced technologies in the classroom. Students are provided opportunities to immerse themselves through work-study, hands-on projects in class and assisting in research.”

K-State Salina students learn real-world skills to build the future

K-State Salina is not only transforming higher education, but also preparing students for careers in industries that are rapidly evolving.

One area seeing massive technological growth is agriculture, where K-State Salina’s expertise in AI, VR and machine learning is making an impact.

Agriculture companies are embracing AI and digital technologies to enhance precision farming. From tractor mapping software to AI-driven agricultural spray aircraft, these innovations are making farming more efficient and cost-effective.

Austin Chart, a graduate student in integrated systems design and dynamics, Salina, is using K-State Salina’s advanced technologies to improve agricultural practices.

“Farming in general has been a lot more systematic, it’s become much more precision-based, and that level of precision is becoming more and more accurate by the day, especially with this type of technology,” Chart said. “Innovations like machine learning, autonomous systems and AI help producers save money because farmers, using the tools and machines at their disposal, understand their land best and know where to properly apply products.”

Students at K-State Salina have access to industry-standard tools like VR headsets, robots, three-dimensional modeling software and programming software like Unreal Engine — all of which allow them to experiment and build their own projects.

The combination of hands-on learning, industry partnerships and cutting-edge technology sets K-State Salina apart.

Chart credits the hands-on nature of K-State Salina’s courses and the faculty’s connections to industry in helping him prepare to affect the agriculture industry with new technologies.

“Getting your education at K-State Salina feels a little bit like you’re at Hogwarts," Chart said. "We’re not just reading a book — we’re learning the spells. Students are creating programs, creating games and doing these things hands-on and in real-time. I think it’s something that distinguishes K-State from a lot of others around country.”

Thanksgiving invites us to slow down and reflect on gratitude—a practice that doesn’t always come easily amid the busyness of daily life. In my experience, gratitude is much like a garden: it needs patience, care, and intentionality to grow and thrive truly.

In my daily work with gardeners here in central Kansas, I’ve noticed a shared trait: generosity. Gardeners freely share their time, resources, and wisdom, seeing abundance where others might see only scarcity. I believe this generosity is a natural outgrowth of their gratitude. As they nurture life in their gardens, gratitude also seems to take root and flourish within them.

This is where gardening and gratitude naturally meet. The more time gardeners spend in the planting, growing, and harvesting cycles, the more they see life itself as a series of gifts. And that’s what gratitude truly is: naming everything as a gift.

Gratefulness names something as a gift, and the habit of constantly naming everything in my life as a gift changes me.&nbsp; Even life’s challenges are gifts that shape and refine me.&nbsp; Gratitude is the most potent form of honesty.&nbsp; It isn’t a pair of rose-colored glasses that denies what is hard, it is more like a conjunction or a companion that comes alongside difficulty to give us a much fuller sense of reality in every moment. &nbsp;

Difficulties, when they arise, are not the whole of our existence.

Experienced gardeners understand that not every growing season will go according to plan.&nbsp; A sudden heatwave early in the season can render tomato pollen nonviable, leading to crop failure. A swarm of caterpillars may strip coneflower foliage bare. A strong windstorm might topple even the most beautiful, productive apple tree.

These things happen, and most gardeners I work with refuse to let these challenges make them less than human.&nbsp; They refuse to shrink or lose their sense and awareness of reality.&nbsp; They have learned to name everything as a gift, even the hardships.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When the tomato crop fails due to heat, they turn their attention to the gift of sweet potato vines that laugh at the hot weather and grow even faster.&nbsp; When the swarm of caterpillars is identified as silvery checkerspot larvae, they anticipate the gift of beautiful black, yellow, and orange butterflies that will soon grace their garden.&nbsp; When the storm topples the apple tree, they mourn the loss but also see the gift of a new opportunity to plant even more sun-loving native flowers to build biodiversity in their landscape.

Thanksgiving season is the perfect time to cultivate gratitude with renewed intentionality. It begins with slowing down and naming everything as a gift. In doing so, we practice the most potent form of honesty—and, like a well-tended garden, our gratitude will grow and flourish.

A strong windstorm might topple even the most beautiful, productive apple tree.These things happen, and most gardeners I work with refuse to let these challenges make them less than human.&nbsp; They refuse to shrink or lose their sense and awareness of reality.&nbsp; They have learned to name everything as a gift, even the hardships.&nbsp;&nbsp;When the tomato crop fails due to heat, they turn their attention to the gift of sweet potato vines that laugh at the hot weather and grow even faster.&nbsp; When the swarm of caterpillars is identified as silvery checkerspot larvae, they anticipate the gift of beautiful black, yellow, and orange butterflies that will soon grace their garden.&nbsp; When the storm topples the apple tree, they mourn the loss but also see the gift of a new opportunity to plant even more sun-loving native flowers to build biodiversity in their landscape.Thanksgiving season is the perfect time to cultivate gratitude with renewed intentionality. It begins with slowing down and naming everything as a gift. In doing so, we practice the most potent form of honesty—and, like a well-tended garden, our gratitude will grow and flourish.

GRAVES: Gardening gratitude this Thanksgiving season

We are on the eve of Thanksgiving and one of the most iconic meals of the year. Who does not crave the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberries, pumpkin pie, etc. I know my plan is to fall asleep in front of the TV in a turkey induced food coma.

The American Farm Bureau Federation has come out with its annual comparison of the cost of a traditional dinner for 10 and the price has fallen for the second year in a row. The cost is $58.08, or $5.80 per person. This is a reduction of 5 percent from 2023 and down from $64.05 in 2022.

I do not know if anyone else finds this interesting — maybe it is just my ag econ degree talking — but I like comparing one year to the next. I saw one commentator who disputed whether Thanksgiving dinner could be purchased at that price, but I really think that is irrelevant. The fact is one of the things we must be thankful for is living in a country where we have an affordable, abundant food supply.

I also like to think that Thanksgiving is a time when we should celebrate agriculture and all that we, as an industry, do to make the United States the greatest nation in the world. The foundation of any stable nation is a stable food supply. It is really hard to accomplish great things on an empty stomach.

I know we all take the food choices we have for granted. This past week I went to the grocery store to buy our Thanksgiving turkey, and I was met with a wide selection of brands and weights of turkeys. Driving down the street I saw restaurant signs offering to prepare the bird. The possibilities presented on the aisles of our grocery stores are endless. Consider the fact that you do not even have to go to the grocery store to buy food and you start to get the idea.

Most of us do not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from, we just must figure out what we want to eat. That is where those of us in agriculture come in. Without the incredible network of farmers and ranchers this safe, abundant food supply is not possible.

We are so good at what we do that most of our consumers take it for granted, and maybe that is why I find the annual comparison from the American Farm Bureau so fascinating. Most of us will go to the grocery store, pick up the necessary items and never give a thought to the cost or how they got on the shelves. We are good at what we do, but we are not good at tooting our own horn.

Without our incredible production it is not possible to serve a feast to 10 people for less than $60, and that is something the rest of the world is in awe of. So, this Thanksgiving, stop and take a minute to be proud of being part of what feeds the United States, we are really good at what we do. That is something to be thankful for.

There’s no shortage of good causes to donate to this holiday season. But before you give somewhere new, make sure you’re not donating to a scam.

Scammers are pros at tricking people into donating.

They’ll often even use names that sound a lot like other charities you’ve heard of to get your money. Here’s how to make sure your money is going to support the cause you care about:

Don’t be rushed or pressured into giving, especially over the phone.&nbsp;

If it’s a request to donate on social media, take the time to make sure the person who shared it with you knows the organization or person fundraising.. 

Research the charity before you give.&nbsp;

Search the name plus “complaint,” “review,” “rating,” or “scam.” Organizations like the&nbsp;Better Business Bureau's (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance,&nbsp;Charity&nbsp;Watch, or&nbsp;Candid&nbsp;also let you research charities.

Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information. Calls can look like they come from your local area code, or from a specific organization, even if they don’t. In reality, the caller could be anywhere in the world.. 

Check out the charity’s website.

Does it give you details about the programs you want to support or how it uses donations? How much of your donation will go directly to support the programs you care about? If you can’t find detailed information about a charity’s mission and programs, be suspicious.. 

Pay attention to how you pay.&nbsp;

If a charity asks you to pay with cryptocurrency, by wiring money through Western Union or MoneyGram, with a payment app, or with a gift card, it’s likely a scam. Donating by credit card or check is safer.

FTC: Avoid holiday charity scams — tips to give wisely

As 2024 comes to an end, the Saline County Appraiser's Office reminds residents about state property tax relief programs that may apply to them. If you think you may qualify for one of these programs, consult your tax preparer.

The statewide school general fund exemption for residential properties applies to all residential class properties. This exemption covers the first $75,000 of appraised valuation and applies to the statewide 20.000 mills for schools. No application is necessary, as the exemption is automatically deducted from the property tax bill. The tax reduction for this exemption can be up to $172.50.

Residents may apply for one of the following programs, but to qualify for a refund, you must complete a state income tax return. Even if you don’t usually file a tax return, the state form must be submitted to receive the refund. Claims can be filed after December 31 and no later than April 15.

The Homestead Refund program requires applicants to be Kansas residents for the entire year and homeowners. Applicants must also meet one of the following qualifications for the entire year: be 55 or older, be blind or permanently disabled, or have a dependent child under 18 living with them all year. Household income must be less than $40,500 to qualify. The maximum refund is $700, and the refund is issued as a credit on income taxes using Form K-40H.

The SAFESR program, which provides property tax relief for low-income seniors, requires applicants to be Kansas residents for the entire year and own a home in Kansas during 2024. Applicants must be 65 or older for all of 2024, with a household income less than $23,700. The home cannot be valued greater than $350,000. The maximum refund is 75% of the 2024 property taxes, and the refund is issued as a credit on income taxes using Form K-40PT.

The Golden Years Homestead Property Tax Freeze is available to Kansas residents who owned and occupied their homes for the entire year. Applicants must be 65 or older for the entire base year or be a disabled veteran with a 50% or greater permanent disability for both the base year and claim year. Household income must be less than $53,600, and the home cannot be valued greater than $350,000. The refund amount is the difference between the prior year and current year property taxes. This refund is issued as a credit on income taxes using Form K-40SVR.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Nov. 26

The Salina Police Department (SPD) is investigating an incident at Dollar General on South Ninth Street where a store employee accidentally dropped a bag containing more than $1,500. Surveillance footage shows a man picking up the bag and leaving without returning it.&nbsp;

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, the 27-year-old store employee, was carrying the bank bag, possibly along with other items, when the bag was inadvertently dropped near the business. The loss initially went unnoticed, but store surveillance footage revealed a sequence of events.

The video reportedly shows a white male, approximately 40 to 50 years old, discovering the dropped bag just outside the store around 3 p.m. He picked it up, briefly entered the store, left without the bag, and then returned to purchase before leaving the store. The bag and the money were not returned, leaving the store short a substantial amount of cash.

Cpt. Feldman confirmed that the store employee who dropped the bag reviewed the surveillance footage but did not recognize the individual seen picking it up. The footage does not indicate whether the man opened the bag to inspect its contents.

Authorities are working to identify the individual seen in the video and are hopeful that additional leads, such as photographs from the surveillance footage, will assist in resolving the case.

The Salina Police Department urges anyone with information about this incident or the individual involved to come forward. Tips can be reported to the Salina Police Department at (785) 826-7210.

The Garage Automotive Museum, located at 134 S. Fourth Street in Salina, Kansas, has unveiled a holiday display that’s stealing the show—literally. A custom-built replica of the Grinch’s sleigh from Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is now on display.&nbsp;

The 2000 Grinchworks Christmas Sleigh, created by Russ Soupene of Manhattan, Kans., was built from repurposed materials, including junkyard parts and truck shop scraps. It features twin turbo jets, retrofitted truck air tanks, and vibrant decorations inspired by the whimsical world of Whoville. The sleigh also has disco-ball flames and a distinctive custom shifter.

Soupene said the sleigh began as a creative project born from his experience decorating a 1930 Model-A Ford wrecker truck for Manhattan Christmas parades with Manhattan Wrecking Service's Todd Gillmore.

"We needed to change the decorations on it, and I was home sick with COVID and nothing to do so I was thinking, 'Well, you know if I could make a sleigh and then we could tow up behind the record track, and then that would be real good for the museum and the parade,'" Soupene said. "I said, 'Well, if I can come up with stuff to make the jet engines out, well then the rest of it'll be easy.'"

Soupene went to his junk pile at his Manhattan Sure truck repair shop and dug around until he found every part he needed to make the sleigh.&nbsp;

"I dug around out there for just a few minutes and had everything to make it. I probably could've made two of them," Soupene said.&nbsp;

Soupene constructed the Grinch's sleigh in October 2022, completing it in less than two months. He started the project about one to two weeks into October and had to finish it by the end of November for the Christmas parade in Manhattan.

"I would always drive it[the Model A] in the parades and then I wanted my granddaughters to ride with me, and so, so that was the big reason was so they could ride in the sleigh," Soupene said. "It's all to have a good time and enjoy Christmas."

The sleigh, made entirely from repurposed materials and inspired by the iconic Dr. Seuss story, blends holiday charm with mischievous engineering. The sleigh’s design incorporates numerous thoughtful details from the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas, such as buttons, switches, a radar panel, the iconic stolen "Mayor of Whoville," and more.

"Christmas is always a fun time, and the sleigh is about spreading Christmas cheer," Soupene said.&nbsp;

After its time at The Garage Automotive Museum, the sleigh will return to Manhattan, where Soupene plans to store it and potentially auction it off in the future, with proceeds benefiting a charitable cause like St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital.

Michelle Peck, the Museum's executive director, said the display is a great photo backdrop and an opportunity to learn how "junk" can be repurposed into something magical.

"It is a great photo opportunity to bring your family in and take your photo with the Grinch. Also, check out the Oddities exhibit on display at The Garage," Peck said. "We have a lot of oddly fantastic cars and vehicles on display right now you won't want to miss."

The Grinch's sleigh will remain displayed throughout the 2024-2025 holiday season. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the museum to experience this festive marvel, take photos, and explore the creativity behind its construction.

The Garage Automotive Museum showcases replica of The Grinch's Sleigh 

Christ Cathedral announces the return of its unique annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans worship service and Feast of St. Andrew. It is set for Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral, 138 S. Eighth Street, downtown Salina.

The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans spotlights the Scottish tradition of having family and clan tartans blessed at a special time of year. The Saturday-evening service and following potluck meal are open to the public. Because three of Salina’s four founding families are Scottish, many feel that a Kirkin’ service is well-suited for the Salina area.

“All are welcome to ‘put on their Scottish’ for the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans,” says Mo. Shay Craig, dean of Christ Cathedral. The holiday-season Kirkin’ service and potluck offer the community a unique taste of Scottish music, traditions, and food in a beautiful historic setting.

At 6 p.m. that Saturday, attendees will be piped into the Cathedral by McPherson-area bagpipers for a service including Holy Eucharist (communion), festive music, and ancient prayers. The tartan sash, kilt, or fabric swatch of any families in attendance that night can be blessed as their clan (family) names are “called” out loud.

Immediately following the worship service is a potluck Ceilidh (“KAY-lee”) supper and a Scotch Whisky tasting in the parish hall library. The evening ends as those in attendance select the Parish Chieftain who will receive a special sash to be worn at next year’s Kirkin’.

Today’s modern-day Kirkin’ traditions link back to mid-16th-century Scottish history. After the English defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Scottish forces in the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the wearing of tartans and playing of bagpipes were forbidden. The wearing or displaying of tartans was punishable by death. According to legend, Scots continued to wear a hidden piece of tartan to church, and their minister would slip in a blessing, or kirking, of the tartans into the worship service.

Celebration of Scottish roots is especially appropriate for Episcopalians, who owe a debt of gratitude to the Scottish Episcopal Church. The Church of England would not consecrate Samuel Seabury, the first American bishop elected post-Revolution, unless he swore allegiance to the Crown. When he would not, bishops in Scotland consecrated Seabury in Aberdeen on Nov. 14, 1784, asking that in return he incorporate the Scottish Rite for the Eucharist into the American prayer book. Features of the Rite are still in use today.

The first recognized Kirkin’ service in America was conducted in Washington, D.C. in 1941. The tradition has grown in popularity since then. Beyond spotlighting Episcopalian heritage and Scottish culture, Christ Cathedral’s Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans and Feast of St. Andrew potluck on Saturday, November 30 encourages participants to reflect on their own family and ethnic heritage.
