Salinans are offering multiple ways to honor veterans on Friday.

Several Veterans Day activities are scheduled, including the following.

Salina Area Technical College Veterans Day flag raising ceremony

Salina Area Technical College and the Kansas National Guard’s Regional Training Institute in Salina will host a Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday on the Salina Tech campus.&nbsp;

Following the ceremony there will be a free breakfast for all active duty military members, veterans and their families. A color guard from the Regional Training Institute will raise the flag in front of Salina Tech Building A, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of the National Anthem, and firing of a ceremonial cannon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This will be the seventh year Salina Tech and the Regional Training Institute have hosted such an event. While the outside portion of the event is open to everyone, the breakfast following is only for active duty members of the military, veterans and their families. Reservations for the breakfast must be made in advance and will be accepted on a first-come, first serve basis. Space is limited&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County War Memorial service at Sunset Park

The Leslie W. Kreps American Legion Post 62 and Salina VFW Auxiliary Post 1432 will host the annual Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. Friday at the Salina-Saline County War Memorial, locate at Sunset Park.

For the first time in several years, Salina will host a Veterans Day parade.&nbsp;The parade, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, is presented by Interim Healthcare Home Healthcare Services.&nbsp; 

The parade route on Santa Fe Avenue will begin at Elm Street and finish at South Street. Tune in to the Salina Post Facebook page to watch the parade LIVE or click&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/salinapost/" target="_blank">here</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

American Legion Post 62, motorcyclists, local businesses, Salina Fire Department and Salina Police will all be featured in the parade. The grand marshals for the parade this year&nbsp; will be veterans Chuck Delaney and David Torrey.&nbsp;

Veterans Day: Salina events, parade downtown

A local man was arrested Wednesday in connection to numerous tires being punctured and other damage done in central Salina.

At approximately 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, officers were sent to the 500 block of S. Eighth Street for the report of suspicious activity. The caller reported that a man who didn't speak English was at the front door and was needing police, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man had a screwdriver in his hand. 

Officers arrived and made contact with Carlos Antonio Perez-Guzman, 24, of Salina. While talking with Perez-Guzman, officers noticed a nearby Toyota Prius with its door open and flashers on. 

That discovery was the first of many reports throughout the day that police later allegedly linked to Perez-Guzman. Forrester said that Perez-Guzman claimed he had come across someone else damaging vehicles and was just reporting it to police. Other incidents believed to be connected to Perez-Guzman include the following, Forrester said.

600 block of S. Ninth Street A 2000 Mercury Marquis and a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox both had punctured tires. The puncture marks were consistent with those made by a screwdriver, Forrester said. Additionally, a brick was thrown through the bay window of the residence. Total damage was estimated at $600.

500 block of S. Eighth Street Four tires on a 2018 Nissan Frontier were punctured. Additionally, the driver side door was open and the center console was damaged. Total damage was estimated at just under $600.

Three tires were punctured on a 2019 Subaru Ascent. Damage was estimated at $450.

One tire was punctured on a 2004 Nissan Titan. Damage was estimated at $500.

Three tires were punctured on a 2017 Honda Civic. Additionally, a radio button had a hole punched through it. Total damage was estimated at $600.

600 block of S. Ninth Street A front tire was punctured on a 1998 Chevrolet S10. The driver side door also was open.

Also at that location, all four tires were punctured on a 2009 Buick Enclave. Additionally, the inside of the driver side door and the stereo both had stab marks, a tail light was broken, and a floor mat was stolen.

On Wednesday afternoon, a resident in the 200 block of W. Prescott Avenue, after seeing Perez-Guzman's jail booking photo, reported to police that at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Perez-Guzman was on the front porch of the residence trying to get in. The incident was captured on Ring video at the residence, Forrester said. Four people were in the residence at the time of the incident.

Perez-Guzman was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Teen girl injured in rollover near Brookville

The Salina Senior Center got an early start to Veterans Day festivities.

Because the facility will be closed on Friday, the center, 245 N. Ninth Street, chose to honor veterans on Thursday. The celebration was scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon.brance Walk around

Included in the celebration were refreshments and prizes, as well as a Remembrance walk around the building. The event was free to all veterans and their families, according to information on the Salina Senior Center Facebook page.

Cold temperatures and breezy north winds will support frigid wind chills early Friday morning.

Well-below-average temperatures are expected to prevail Veterans Day and through the weekend.

Veterans Day to start off cold; below average temps through weekend

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois has announced that the 2022 first half tax payments are due on Dec. 20.

The second half tax payments are due on May 10, 2023.

DuBois said the tax statements will be mailed out on approximately Nov. 23.

"Please send the remittance stub from the bottom of the tax statement with the payment. Please remember to indicate on the stub if you want a paid receipt returned to you. Can’t find your statement? Call the Treasurer’s Office at (785) 309-5860, or email us at <a href="mailto:sc.treasurer@saline.org">sc.treasurer@saline.org</a>, for the amount due and the tax ID number. A copy of the statement can be emailed or mailed upon request," DuBois said.

Additionally, DuBois noted that if 2021 taxes have not yet been paid, interest is due. 

"Please call the Treasurer’s Office for the correct amount prior to sending payment," he said.

Christmas and money—now there’s a combination that can send anyone spiraling.

If the holiday budget is getting tight, try gifting a homemade loaf of bread and a handwritten note to a few people on your list. If cookies mean a lot to Santa, a tasty treat made with love will feel like a warm hug to your family and friends.&nbsp;</li><li>Trim the excess.&nbsp;Traditions are great, but you don’t have to do something just because you’ve always done it that way. If you typically spend money on a fancy Christmas card, maybe this is the year you decide to share a fun Instagram post instead. Or if you host an annual holiday dinner, ask everyone to pitch in potluck style this time. The people who love you will also love to help you.</li><li>Think experiences over expenses.&nbsp;Like every classic Christmas movie teaches, the holiday season is really about community and connection. This voluntary recall is isolated to three batches of Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tubs from NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® that were produced August 1-3, 2022. These products were distributed to retailers nationwide.&nbsp;This recall does not involve any other NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® products, including other varieties of Edible cookie dough or Ready-to-Bake cookie dough.

While no illnesses or injuries have been reported, we took action out of an abundance of caution after a small number of consumers contacted Nestlé USA about this issue.

Consumers who may have purchased these three batch codes (22135554RR, 22145554RR, 22155554RR) of Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tubs from NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® should not consume the product and should return the product to the retailer where it was purchased for a replacement or refund. City of Salina and Saline County offices and buildings will be closed on Friday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. They will return to regular hours on Monday.

On Friday and Saturday, the City of Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill and sanitation collection crews will maintain their regular schedules, according to information from the City of Salina General Services Department.

The Household Hazardous Waste, Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center, and General Services facilities will be closed Friday. The Salina Drive-Thru Recycling Center will be open Saturday during its normal business hours: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., the General Services Department noted.

ABILENE - After a multi-year absence, the Heart of American Band is back!

Sponsored by the Arts Council of Dickinson County, the 32nd Heart of America Band concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Nov. 20 in the auditorium of Abilene High School, 1400 N. Cedar Street. The concert is open to the public at no charge.

The Heart of American Band is comprised of 70 musicians whose experience spans decades, including professors, instructors, and students.

"All are playing for the love of music and to share with the community. You'll no doubt hear familiar tunes ranging from pop music, patriotic music, movie tunes, and classic hits," the Arts Council of Dickinson County noted in a news release.

The performance will be the band's first since 2019.

Salina's Bill Burke Park closed for turf improvement project

KANcycle, a bike sharing program of OCCK Transportation,&nbsp;has integrated its system into a single account and app experience.&nbsp; The new offering, available in Transit, enables riders to plan a multimodal trip, and unlock a bike with just a few taps.&nbsp;

By merging transit and bikeshare into one experience with Transit, OCCK Transportation and KANcycle are making it easier to keep North Central Kansas moving.&nbsp; In the last three years, bikeshare has seen increased popularity.&nbsp; By bringing these services together in Transit, KANcycle and OCCK Transportation are taking connectivity a step further, creating a combined option that brings mobility options together in one place.

KANcycle unveils bikeshare integration in Transit app

A Salina man was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly struck an EMS driver who was there to check on him.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that EMS personnel were dispatched to 1805 S. Ninth Street for a welfare check on a possibly intoxicated person who was reported to be passed out in the parking lot of Smokes For Less. When they arrived at the scene, the man, who was then alert and verbal, approached the EMS personnel and allegedly was using profanity.

The man, identified as Tyrone Chavez, 43, of Salina, was reported to have struck the driver through the open window of the EMS unit, at which point, police were called to the scene.

When officers arrived, they found Chavez on the ground with some firemen on top of him, Hanus said.

Chavez was arrested on a requested charge of battery, Hanus said.

The 48-year-old EMS driver was not injured.

Two unlocked cars burgled, multiple items stolen in west-central Salina

A wind advisory is in effect for some counties in our area Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

South winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Please use caution if driving a high profile vehicle on a west to east oriented road.

Wednesday will be warm and windy with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. 

Sustained southerly wind speeds are expected to be from 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph with the highest values west of Interstate 135.

 Driving could be challenging on east and west running roadways especially for high profile vehicles. Secure any loose outdoor objects.

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher There’s something to be said about waking up to the sound of rain on a roof and thunder rumbling in the distance. Add in a dash of lightning momentarily highlighting an otherwise dark sky, and we have the start of a glorious fall day! &nbsp; It’s no secret I prefer the warm sunlight to awaken me from my slumber. But, after experiencing an incredibly hot and dry year that undoubtedly impacted our crops and attitudes, I jumped out of bed before my alarm clock went off to start my day. After all, it was raining, and it would continue to rain for the duration of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; It was a cold and dark morning, which required wool socks and warm coffee as we got the kids moving and prepared for school. Generally, I’m not a fan of feeling cold in the morning, but I threw on a sweatshirt and happily packed the kids’ lunches and then gleefully made their breakfasts because it was raining and it would continue to rain for the remainder of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; After getting the kids on the bus, my husband and I decided to make a trip into town to enjoy a warm breakfast together at our local cafe. It’s a tradition we haven’t practiced in a while but enjoy whenever there is a morning rain. &nbsp; I quickly put my hair up in a ponytail while walking out the door and cheerfully accepted that I’d probably have a bad hair day. But that didn’t matter. It was raining and it would continue to rain for the rest of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh, how this morning rain was perfectly timed! After all, we had just wrapped up our fall harvest the day before feeling tired and deflated knowing it wasn’t the greatest of harvests. We gave thanks at the dinner table for the harvest we did have, asked for the rain forecast to hold, and then went to bed.&nbsp; &nbsp; And in the cold and dark early hours of the morning, the rain indeed arrived. And it remained a steady presence for the rest of the day and into the evening. &nbsp; The sun remained hidden behind the clouds and the temperature required me to keep my wool socks and sweater on all day. We enjoyed warm soup for lunch and office work that had been neglected because we haven’t had an opportunity to break from fall harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; To others it was probably an otherwise no good, dreary and drab November day. A day that one would prefer to avoid for the sake of comfort, morale, or even style.&nbsp; &nbsp; But for me, it turned out to be a glorious fall day! All because I awoke to the sound of rain.&nbsp;

INSIGHT: The sound of rain

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 9, the 313th day of 2022. There are 52 days left in the year.

On Nov. 9, 1989, communist East Germany threw open its borders, allowing citizens to travel freely to the West; joyous Germans danced atop the Berlin Wall.

In 1620, the passengers and crew of the Mayflower sighted Cape Cod.

In 1872, fire destroyed nearly 800 buildings in Boston.

In 1918, it was announced that Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II would abdicate; he then fled to the Netherlands.

In 1935, United Mine Workers president John L. Lewis and other labor leaders formed the Committee for Industrial Organization (later renamed the Congress of Industrial Organizations).

In 1938, Nazis looted and burned synagogues as well as Jewish-owned stores and houses in Germany and Austria in a pogrom or deliberate persecution that became known as "Kristallnacht."

In 1965, the great Northeast blackout began as a series of power failures lasting up to 13 1/2 hours, leaving 30 million people in seven states and part of Canada without electricity.

In 1970, former French President Charles de Gaulle died at age 79.

In 1976, the U.N. General Assembly approved resolutions condemning apartheid in South Africa, including one characterizing the white-ruled government as "illegitimate."

In 2007, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan placed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest for a day, and rounded up thousands of her supporters to block a mass rally against his emergency rule.

In 2011, after 46 seasons as Penn State's head football coach and a record 409 victories, Joe Paterno was fired along with the university president, Graham Spanier, over their handling of child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

In 2016, Democrat Hillary Clinton conceded the presidential election to Republican Donald Trump, telling supporters in New York that her defeat was "painful, and it will be for a long time." But Clinton told her faithful to accept Trump and the election results, urging them to give him "an open mind and a chance to lead."

In 2020, President Donald Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper, injecting more uncertainty to a rocky transition period as Joe Biden prepared to assume the presidency; Trump said Christopher Miller, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, would serve as acting secretary.

Ten years ago: Retired four-star Army Gen. David Petraeus abruptly resigned as CIA director after an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, was revealed by an FBI investigation. Thousands of union bakers went on strike against Hostess Brands, Inc., to protest cuts to wages and benefits under a new contract offer. (Hostess responded by shutting down its operations and selling its assets to new owners who revived the Hostess brand.)

Five years ago: During a visit to Beijing, President Donald Trump criticized what he called a "very one-sided and unfair" trade relationship between the U.S. and China, but said he didn't blame China for having taken advantage of the U.S. Actor John Hillerman, best known for his supporting role on the TV series "Magnum, P.I.," died at the age of 84 at his home in Houston.

One year ago: A federal judge rejected former President Donald Trump's request to block the release of documents to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The Oklahoma Supreme Court overturned a $465 million opioid ruling against drugmaker Johnson &amp; Johnson. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service struck down a Trump-era rule that would have opened millions of acres of forest in Oregon, Washington and California to potential logging. Max Cleland, who lost three limbs to a hand grenade in Vietnam and later became a groundbreaking Veterans Administration chief and U.S. senator from, died at his Atlanta home at 79. Brian Williams, who anchored NBC's "Nightly News" before losing that job in 2015 for making false claims about his wartime experiences, announced that he was leaving the network after 28 years.
