Bringing back its&nbsp;Sunflower Biennial exhibition, the Salina Art Center is ready to give younger Kansans a way to showcase their art.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have 98 pieces in the show, representing 38 communities across our state. So it's really an exciting show,” said Salina Art Center Executive Director Misty Serene.&nbsp;

The exhibition is set to open on Feb. 11 and will be open to the public until March 26. All of the pieces featured in the exhibition are made by a&nbsp;college or high school age Kansas student.

Serene said that this exhibition provides young artists a platform to share what is current in their world that encourages the exchange of ideas and respect. The exhibition will allow young artists to gain experience with the submitting artwork for exhibitions, building a portfolio, public speaking, marketing their talents and more.&nbsp;

“We will have an&nbsp;opening reception at the center on February the 11th, from 1-3 p.m. free and open to anyone to attend, we encourage you to meet the young artists, talk to them and see their work," Serene said. "It's a very community friendly opportunity. In fact, everything at the galleries is always free admission.&nbsp;”&nbsp;

Two art jurors&nbsp;from the FISCH HAUS in Wichita will review&nbsp;all the submissions, and determine which of the artworks will be awarded additional prizes. The jurors are Elizabeth&nbsp;Stevenson and&nbsp;Patrick&nbsp;Duegaw.&nbsp;

FISCH HAUS is a multi-disciplinary art facility, located in Wichita's Commerce St. Art District, currently accommodating five full-time local creatives as well as a steady stream of artists, actors and musicians, both regional and international.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We always do our best to reach out to reputable artists who are currently working in the field of art to be jurors for this exhibition," Serene said. "Elizabeth and Patrick are both fantastic artists, so we are very pleased to be working with them and FISH HAUS."&nbsp;

Stevenson earned a degree in architecture from McGill University in Montreal. She has lived and worked throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, arriving finally in Wichita in 1998.&nbsp;

Duegaw&nbsp;is an artist and shows nationally and internationally. He divides his time between his studios in Kansas and Montréal,&nbsp;Québec. Duegaw's first solo museum exhibition, The Builder, Removed, a comprehensive retrospective of 111 paintings and drawings, was held at the Wichita Art Museum in the spring of 2009. Many museums and exhibitions later,&nbsp;Duegaw&nbsp;has had seven large-scale solo multi-media exhibitions at Fisch Haus, regularly exhibits in galleries in both Kansas City and San Francisco, and has been invited to participate in national group shows such as the Kansas Masters Invitational, and the Kansas Governor's Ball/Inauguration Exhibition, both held in 2007.&nbsp;

Salina Art Center showcases Kansas student art in 'Sunflower Biennial'

The 2023 Tescott Lions Club Pancake Day is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Tescott Lions Building. Eat in or carry out pancakes, eggs, sausage, chili, and desserts. The cost is by donation.

Raffle tickets will be sold for four each of hams and pork loins. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The Tescott Lions Club noted that the hams and loins "are huge and would be great for Super Bowl parties or Easter dinner!"

Additionally, while it lasts, bulk pork sausage will be available in one-pound packages for $4.50 each. 

"Thank you to Glasco Locker and Srna Farms for the fresh pork/sausage," the Tescott Lions Club noted.

All funds raised will go toward the club's local scholarship program and community projects.

The Saline County Engineer's Office has announced that part of Falun Road has been closed for a bridge replacement project.

Falun Road between S. Burma Road and S. Halstead Road is scheduled to reopen on June 1.

Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of the closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies. A signed detour route will not be installed for this project. However, improvements to Halstead Rd and Salemsborg Rd have been completed for use by local traffic.

Driving around road closure barricades is not just unlawful but extremely unsafe. For your safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs.

Salina Police Dept. recognizes 2 officers for KLETC graduation

A catalytic converter was stolen from a pickup while the vehicle was parked at a central Salina clinic Thursday.

A 63-year-old Salina woman told police that her 2017 Chevrolet Colorado was parked at Mowery Clinic, 737 E. Crawford Street, from 7:45 a.m.-5:15 p.m. Thursday. When she drove away, she noticed that the pickup was extremely loud and then discovered that someone had cut the catalytic converter from the pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

In a legal opinion on May 26, 2021, then-Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt noted that "Catalytic converters are covered by the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act, so transactions involving their purchase by scrap metal dealers are regulated and must be reported to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation database."

An SUV stolen from an east Salina mortuary in late January was recovered Thursday in another part of the city.

Officers were sent to Theatre Salina, 303 E. Iron Avenue, for the report of a vehicle burglary in progress. A witness reported seeing a man looking inside a blue Suzuki Grand Vitara, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The man, who was riding a red and black mountain bike, was described as being 30-40 years of age, 5'5" with a slender build and dark hair. He was wearing a light-weight dark jacket and dark pants.

The man left before officers arrived, but they did find the driver-side door open. When they ran the license plate, they discovered that the SUV was the same one that had been stolen from Roselawn Mortuary sometime on Jan. 24-25, Forrester said.

The SUV was not damaged and was returned to the mortuary, he said.

Stolen mortuary SUV recovered near downtown Salina

A pedestrian was injured when she was struck by a car in central Salina Thursday afternoon.

Jeffrey Herzog, 66, of Salina, was westbound on E. Crawford Street in a 2012 Honda Accord, when he attempted to turn left onto S. Fourth Street and struck Tihomina Green, 40, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. Thursday.

Initially, Green was not taken to the hospital, but she later complained of hip pain and went to the hospital, Forrester said.

The car sustained some front-end damage, but Herzog was able to drive it away.

Herzog was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester said.

Fourth Street and struck Tihomina Green, 40, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.The incident occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. Thursday.Initially, Green was not taken to the hospital, but she later complained of hip pain and went to the hospital, Forrester said.The car sustained some front-end damage, but Herzog was able to drive it away.Herzog was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester said.

As a local youth baseball coach, Jason Wells has seen families struggle to support their child’s love of the game, due to the rising cost of youth sports.

“Equipment, uniforms, league fees and tournament fees can make baseball an expensive youth sport,” said Wells. “Our team does whatever it can to keep costs reasonable, yet there has always been a significant fee per player to participate.”

This issue is not new. In 2000, longtime youth baseball coach Larry Britegam wanted to help families who struggle with the financial demands of organized sports, so he established the Youth Baseball Fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. This fund, along with the community foundation’s Sunflower Softball Fund, provides support for local youth who want to participate in baseball or softball but are limited by a lack of funds. Grants may be used to cover registration fees, tournament fees, equipment, uniforms, and clinics.

“This fund truly has an impact on the kids that love baseball and need some financial help to participate,” Wells said. “While most of these kids will never earn a baseball scholarship, they may create experiences and friendships they will remember the rest of their lives.”

Since the baseball and softball funds were started, 248 young baseball and softball players in the Salina area have received a combined total of $69,311.40.

“I would like to thank all those who put forth the time and money to keep this fund going,” Wells said. “Thanks for helping kids in Salina have an opportunity to be a part of these teams.”

This season, $13,000 is available for baseball and more than $3,000 is available for softball. Applications open Feb. 1, with deadlines of Feb. 15, March 15, April 15 and May 15, 2023. Funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and decisions will be announced after each grant deadline.

This week's 'KINA Saturday Morning' lineup

LAWRENCE — The sound made by a refrigerator is just 50 A-weighted decibels. A ringing telephone generates 70 dBA, a leaf blower 110 dBA and a jet engine 150 dBA.

But how do these noises affect employees who are exposed to them every day at their workplace?

“It’s a really complex relationship when you think about how sound affects people,” said Karthik Srinivasan, assistant professor of business analytics at the University of Kansas. “Some of us like quiet environments; some of us like noisy environments. We have a fair understanding from a psychological perspective, but much needs to be understood in terms of physiological effects of prolonged sound level exposure.”

That was the impetus for his new study titled&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41746-022-00727-1">“Discovery of associative patterns between workplace sound level and physiological wellbeing using wearable devices and empirical Bayes modeling,”</a>&nbsp;published in Nature Digital Medicine. The study recruited 231 federal office workers who wore multiple devices (around the neck or strapped on the chest) that assessed how sounds experienced in an indoor setting affect individual well-being.

It reveals that physiological well-being is optimal when sound level in the workplace is around 50 dBA. At lower (&lt;50dBA) and higher (&gt;50dBA) amplitude ranges, a 10 dBA increase in sound level is related to a 5.4% increase and 1.9% decrease in physiological well-being, respectively. Age, body-mass-index, high blood pressure, anxiety and computer-intensive work are factors that contribute to specific variations in the results.

He said, “We looked at how we can capture the effect of sound on two different representations of physiological stress. One is primarily related to parasympathetic stress response; the other is a combination of parasympathetic and sympathetic stress response. So, in laymen terms, it means that when you are stressed, the parasympathetic and sympathetic responses are related to your body’s fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest functions respectively, to cope with stress.”

Srinivasan was lead author on the paper, which was part of the Wellbuilt for Wellbeing project led by the University of Arizona. It involved a large team of collaborators that included principal investigator Esther Sternberg, Faiz Currim, Matthias Mehl and Sudha Ram, all with the University of Arizona; Casey Lindberg, with the University of Arizona and HKS Architects; Javad Razjouyan and Bijan Najafi, both with Baylor College of Medicine; Brian Gilligan, Judith Heerwagen and Kevin Kampschroer, all with the U.S. General Services Administration; Hyoki Lee with University of Arizona and Best Buy; Kelli Canada, Logistics Management Institute; and Nicole Goebel and Melissa Lunden, both with Aclima.

The team was assembled to conduct this study for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), an agency with more than 10,000 employees that manages all the federal buildings in the nation. Research teams were composed of four groups: environmental, physiological, psychological and analytical. The study took place between 2015-2016 and focused on office workers in Texas and Washington, D.C.

“Ultimately, the GSA was very interested in understanding how we can make better workplaces,” Srinivasan said.

He said that one of the key lessons of the paper is that while sound level does affect individuals inside the office workplace, its effect is not linear as might be expected.

“Higher sound levels are not good, but so are very low sound levels,” he said, noting the optimal level resides around 50 decibels ampere.

“The second lesson we learned was this sound level association with physiological well-being is different for different people. We looked at various job roles and demographics, and we learned if participants who fell under the category of computer-intensive work or had high blood pressure, their physiological response to sound was different from the other participants.”

For example, the high blood pressure group proved more susceptible to sound, whereas the computer-intensive group was less affected when compared to the average participant.

Srinivasan began working on this project while a doctoral student at the University of Arizona. He’s now in his fourth year at KU, where his expertise is in machine learning interpretability.

“When we think about well-being, typically we think about emotional or mental well-being,” he said. “We hardly ever consider the physiological well-being or the actual ‘what’s happening in our body,’ which is also important to understand when we’re continuously exposed to environmental factors such as sound.”

It involved a large team of collaborators that included principal investigator Esther Sternberg, Faiz Currim, Matthias Mehl and Sudha Ram, all with the University of Arizona; Casey Lindberg, with the University of Arizona and HKS Architects; Javad Razjouyan and Bijan Najafi, both with Baylor College of Medicine; Brian Gilligan, Judith Heerwagen and Kevin Kampschroer, all with the U.S. General Services Administration; Hyoki Lee with University of Arizona and Best Buy; Kelli Canada, Logistics Management Institute; and Nicole Goebel and Melissa Lunden, both with Aclima.The team was assembled to conduct this study for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), an agency with more than 10,000 employees that manages all the federal buildings in the nation. Research teams were composed of four groups: environmental, physiological, psychological and analytical. The study took place between 2015-2016 and focused on office workers in Texas and Washington, D.C.“Ultimately, the GSA was very interested in understanding how we can make better workplaces,” Srinivasan said.He said that one of the key lessons of the paper is that while sound level does affect individuals inside the office workplace, its effect is not linear as might be expected.“Higher sound levels are not good, but so are very low sound levels,” he said, noting the optimal level resides around 50 decibels ampere.“The second lesson we learned was this sound level association with physiological well-being is different for different people. We looked at various job roles and demographics, and we learned if participants who fell under the category of computer-intensive work or had high blood pressure, their physiological response to sound was different from the other participants.”For example, the high blood pressure group proved more susceptible to sound, whereas the computer-intensive group was less affected when compared to the average participant.Srinivasan began working on this project while a doctoral student at the University of Arizona. He’s now in his fourth year at KU, where his expertise is in machine learning interpretability.“When we think about well-being, typically we think about emotional or mental well-being,” he said. “We hardly ever consider the physiological well-being or the actual ‘what’s happening in our body,’ which is also important to understand when we’re continuously exposed to environmental factors such as sound.”

Ellsworth Scholars Bowl team wins regional competition

ADELPHI, Md. - Bradford N. Hurlbert, of Chapman, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities degree from University of Maryland Global Campus in fall 2022.

Hurlbert was one of more than 7,600 students worldwide who earned degrees from UMGC in the fall. Graduates came from all 50 states, five U.S. territories, and 18 countries.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) was established in 1947 to serve adults in the workforce. Today, UMGC enrolls some 90,000 students annually, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, as well as certificates in more than 125 fully online, hybrid and face-to-face programs and specializations.

UMGC has a long history of innovation in reaching students where they are, including as a pioneer of internet instruction, piloting its first online classes in 1994. The university has received numerous awards for its groundbreaking work in developing fully online degree programs, including in high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, business, data analytics, health care and education.

UMGC now offers classes to military service personnel and their families at more than 180 locations in more than 20 countries. More than half of the university's students are active-duty military personnel, their families, members of the National Guard and veterans.

Salina Central releases names of student on first semester honor roll

Hutton Construction project superintendent for K-State's newest residence hall told Salina Post despite material transportation delays tied to the COVID-19 pandemic and muddy conditions, construction teams are ahead of schedule for opening of a new residence hall this fall.

Last month, <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=85137">Mike James</a>, executive director for administration and finance at K-State Salina and Max Wilhaus, Hutton Construction project superintendent gave us a tour and update on the progress being made on the $9.1 million structure.

As college campuses across the nation continue to see enrollment numbers drop, <a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University’s Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>, 2310 Centennial Road, continues to see more applications each year. For the fall 2022 semester, K-State Salina had 795 students, a 7.3 percent increase from year before. <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/9225ac58-f6ae-4e9b-b64b-d4acb4c9792a">For the past five years the campus's professional pilot program has seen substantial enrollment growth.&nbsp;</a>

Kyle Chamberlin, director of student life at K-State Salina, said the current residence halls, Harbin and Schilling, weren't enough to meet enrollment demands or new residency requirements.

"The last three years now we've been full in Harbin and Schilling Hall," Chamberlin said. "We want to be able to offer more housing for students to stay here. The stats are proven that if a student starts on campus and lives on campus, they will have success and more success across the board."

In the fall of 2022, Kansas State University began requiring incoming Manhattan campus first-year students to live on campus during their first two semesters.&nbsp;

Based on data for fall 2018, K-State had an 87.6 percent retention rate for freshmen who lived on campus compared to a 79.9 percent rate for freshmen living off campus. For fall 2019, 5 percent more first-year students who lived on campus stayed in school as compared to first-year students who lived off campus.&nbsp; Starting in 2023, incoming, full-time, degree-seeking, first-year undergraduate students at K-State Salina will be required to live on campus in one of the&nbsp; residence halls for their first two semesters of enrollment.

K-State Salina, a global aerospace leader

Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina dean and CEO, said the expansion of the university's housing footprint, by adding 104 living spaces, would create a greater sense of community on campus.&nbsp;

“This new residence hall is another step forward in establishing our campus as a global aerospace leader,” Starkey said. “Studies show students earn better grades and are more likely to finish their degrees when living on campus. This ideal space allows our students to build their network, further their goals and find support that is important to them. When students are empowered by a positive community, they become leaders of tomorrow.”

What is driving all of these future pilots to K-State Salina? In 2021, K-State Salina secured 17 new Garmin enabled aircraft thanks to a philanthropic donation through the K-State Foundation. Also, the university recently added two new programs, <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-12/master-of-social-work-partnership12122.html">master of social work</a> and <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-08/aviation-management-degree9222.html">bachelor's degree in aviation management</a>.&nbsp;

As more people move to Salina to pursue a career in aviation, K-State Salina sees this moment as an opportunity to support the local housing market and the community as a whole.

“K-State Salina’s commitment to the community and its enrollment growth is realized by the construction of this new residence hall,” said Tim Rogers, executive director of the Salina Airport Authority. “This not only helps students but reduces the housing pressure in Salina and benefits the Kansas economy from increased enrollment. The success of K-State Salina has a positive impact on our local community and the surrounding region.”&nbsp;

Over half of the students currently enrolled at K-State Salina are majoring in aviation. Aviation students are regularly logging flight hours both during the day and late into the evening. James said this presented K-State with a unique challenge- how and when do we set meal times at dining halls?

"Many students are busy with flight hours into the evening, a lot of times till 11 p.m. at night," James said. "The university can't afford to keep the dining hall open all hours of the night, so we decided to bring the dining center to them."&nbsp;

Each floor of the new residence hall will be equipped with a kitchenet, which will include an oven with a fire suppression hood, a fridge, sink, and microwave oven.&nbsp;

Chamberlin said not only will the kitchens provide space for future university sponsored cooking programs, but they will allow international students to cook foods they are comfortable and familiar with.

"It's a great thing to be able to walk into your kitchen, and be able to cook the foods you want to cook, from where ever you are from," Chamberlin said. "Students can use like oil and those types of things in these kitchens, because we'll have the suppression hoods and all the things to ensure safety."&nbsp;

Even the front door lobby of the residence hall will feature a kitchen, giving the entire building a homey and cozy feel.

"One of the reasons why when you first walk in there's a kitchen, is we're hoping, to coin a phrase from Derek Jackson over in Manhattan, 'When you make cookies, you make friends,'" Chamberlin said. " Also just to have that easy flow of mom or dad who just wanna drop some things off, and cook."&nbsp;

The residence hall will have both single and double rooms. Both room layouts will come with a walk-in closet.&nbsp;Private shower and bathrooms will be located on each floor for residents to utilize.&nbsp;

James said that the entire building will be keyless, meaning that digital keycards will be the only way to enter into the building, and to gain access to their dorm rooms.&nbsp;

In 2020, K-State Salina ran out of residential living space for incoming freshman. University administrators, in coordination with student government began to discuss what a new residence hall would look like, and if a new residence hall was needed, given enrollment declines experienced by other major universities.&nbsp;

"Leadership did a really good job of not hitting the gas right away and just saying, 'Yeah, build it now. And, you know, create all this debt,'" Chamberlin said. "Then students started getting involved in the conversation, where we asked them-' Do you think we need a new hall?'"

Chamberlin said campus leaders in Manhattan helped formulate the best strategy when it came to funding and logistics of building a new hall.

"In the second year of planning is when it really started to kind of gain some momentum," Chamberlin said. "Main campus was a huge help to us. Derek Jackson and the Student Life team up there gave us a bunch of suggestions on how to get a dorm built, what type to build plans. I mean, it was extremely helpful to be connected in that way. Thankfully the foundation has been extremely helpful in getting this project off the ground."&nbsp;

When asked about future resident hall builds on campus, Chamberlin said campus leaders are already having discussions on whether another residence hall will be needed in the not too distant future.&nbsp;

"The big thing now is, 'How many years are you going to be full?' and thankfully, with enrollment, we've just increased and increased. So it was easy to say, we're gonna need it."
