Våffeldagen — or Waffle Day — is celebrated with gusto in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Lindsborg, founded by Swedish immigrants, began celebrating Våffeldagen in 2010 and adapted it to the community’s own outgoing way — not just with fresh hot waffles but also with waffle-y treats, waffle games and songs and, yes, costumed waffle people.
Why is March 25 associated with waffles?
That date marks nine months until Christmas Day, and in Sweden it was known as Vårfrudagen (Our Lady’s Day, also known as the Feast of the Annunciation). When pronounced quickly, Vårfrudagen sounds like “Våffeldagen” (Waffle Day). It seems that the mispronunciation was embraced over centuries. So today, waffles are synonymous with the countdown to Christmas and the celebration of Spring.
Lindsborg’s interpretation of Våffeldagen on Saturday features four locations serving hot waffles at staggered serving times between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. including Blacksmith Coffee Shop, Crown and Rye Restaurant, 350 Degrees Bakery, and The White Peacock Coffee Shop.
In addition, the Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center will lay out a waffle charcuterie buffet. Indigo Moo’d, serving fresh house-made ice cream, will offer maple-bacon ice cream, waffle cones, and waffle sundaes. Give Jalisco Mexican Restaurant's first-ever waffle tostadas a try. For specific serving times, please consult the full schedule on the Lindsborg Våffeldagen Facebook Page or the Lindsborg CVB website.
Våffeldagen in Lindsborg goes beyond food
The Lindsborg Community Library will again offer its popular array of free children’s crafts from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and host Clifford the Big Red Dog of the animated children’s adventure film and PBS television series. Also see the library’s new LEGO mural project featuring waffles.
Waffle games and photo ops will dot downtown sidewalks. Lindsborg’s popular roving Waffle People will greet visitors, pose for photos, and hand out souvenirs from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. People are encouraged to wear their own waffle-y finery for the day — maybe a waffle-patterned four-leaf clover to honor the “lucky” 13th Lindsborg Våffeldagen? Or stop by The Ivory Thimble to buy waffle-y apparel: bowties, hair bows, headbands, scrunchies, jewelry from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
