A Salina man died as the result of a work accident Wednesday just south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that emergency personnel responded to Crestwood, Inc., 601. E. Water Well Road, at 3:51 p.m. Wednesday for the report of an accident.

Nathaniel T.R. Goben, 27, of Salina, was moving a load of lumber when the lumber fell on him, Soldan said. Goben was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where he later died.

In the following post on its Facebook page, Crestwood announced Goben's death.

Bike sharrows and carpeting are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.&nbsp;

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. Meetings also can be viewed at the City of Salina YouTube channel,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas">https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas</a>.

"Carpet was last installed in this area in 2000 (22 years ago). The carpet has surpassed its useful life and is visibly worn," staff noted in the request for action information.

Staff is recommending that commissioners approve the purchase and installation of carpet for the area from Carpet Central Flooring Center in the amount of $44,622.68.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to set the date for the 2022 amended budget public hearing.

Salina City Commission to consider bike sharrows, carpeting

“If you wish to educate the student by science, love your science and know it, and the students will love both you, and the science, and you will educate them; but if you yourself do not love it, the science will have no educational influence, no matter how much you may compel them to learn it.” This is a quote by no less than Tolstoy in “On Education” written in the mid-1800s in Tsarist Russia.

Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), famous worldwide for authoring the classics “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina,” was very much a “Renaissance man” (meaning that he studied deeply into many different fields). Tolstoy established 13 schools in Yasnaya Polyana serving the children of Russian peasants. In contrast to the harsh curricular dictates of the Tsarist state, Tolstoy proposed that the critical “educational element...is only then imparted to the students when the teacher is passionately fond of his subject and when he knows it well; only then his love is communicated to the students and has an educational influence upon them.”

When I taught middle and high school science for 10 years in three different schools, I had some teacher colleagues who were passionate about their science, and some for whom teaching was just a job. A few students brought their passion for science to school, usually due to outdoor experiences or a fascination with tinkering. But there was an obvious difference in the newly-inspired students of my passionate colleagues, and the routine burden felt by students attending the just-a-job teachers.

Therefore across 30-plus years of training high school biology teachers, I have always been on the lookout for the science-passionate college student who would make a science-passionate teacher. Again, some came to my classes as biology teaching majors, already “turned on” to an excitement they could foresee year after year as a teacher explaining the ever-growing discoveries of our advancing biology.

But we needed and still need far more of these highly qualified and highly inspired teachers. So in my non-major courses I would keep an eye out for those students whose eyes lit up when we covered certain topics. Indeed, there is a long-known science dating from 1950s research that indicates how we can read students’ eyes, mainly their eye pupil dilation, and detect whether they are bored or excited. For those who are obviously excited, they will likely go back to their dormitory and unload on their roommates the exciting biology they have just learned. Those are the students I would corral before they left my classroom after class.

“You are excited about [current topic]. Have you considered becoming a biology teacher?” I would ask. Many would recognize in my voice that I considered their passion for biology to be an important skill. –That I wanted them to consider going into science teaching. Some had other tentative plans, perhaps to focus on just one field of research. –Or maybe become a medical doctor.

I would point out that focusing on one narrow field might not remain exciting. And while a medical doctor helps a patient for just a day, the patient then goes back to lead their regular life. But a teacher has students for whole semesters and can change their students’ life. For some, my appeal worked. And they changed to teaching, entering public classrooms years later—spreading their passion.

But that recruitment strategy soon came to an end after 2001. No Child Left Behind usurped professional decision-making. Mandated state assessments with school penalties for not making adequate yearly progress commanded teachers in most schools to teach-to-the-test. —Scores before passion. Many high school students who saw this de-professionalization occur with their high school teachers could no longer be convinced to enter teaching. Their objections based on what they had seen were correct.

Our national exodus of science teachers and national shortfall began twenty years ago and is fully documented. We no longer have anywhere near enough science teachers and the situation is getting worse. Across the U.S., state boards of education ignore this problem. State higher learning commissions and regents see declining enrolments as a reason to close science programs. Meanwhile, both bodies attempt to improve education through various “standards” and other paperwork.

If you have well-trained and passionate teachers, you will have good education. Without such teachers, paperwork provides nothing. Tolstoy knew this over 150 years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Science teachers' love of science

Wilson, Kansas, has long been known as the Czech Capital of Kansas.

People from near and far take the small drive off Interstate 70 in north central Kansas to have their photo taken in front of the world’s largest hand-painted Czech egg.

About a year ago, local business owner Melinda Merrill added another tourist attraction to the small central Kansas town (population 850).

Merrill – who already had revived an apartment complex in an old local school building, as well as the town’s historic Midland Railroad Hotel – opened The Barn:&nbsp;Kansas Libations Club &amp; Social Room.

It’s not just a catchy descriptive name for this community located smack-dab in the middle of rural Kansas.

The 40-by-60 square-foot building, whose name was soon shortened to The Barn, is the real deal.

The barn was built in 1907 near the city’s hotel as the home for stud race horses. It was moved to a working farm less than half a mile away in 1964.

One day while talking with Frank Princ, the owner of that farm just down the road west of the hotel, Merrill mentioned the necessity of a conference center in town.

Princ told Merrill he was no longer using the barn – music to the ears of the local entrepreneur.

“Well, I have a good idea,” Merrill told Princ.&nbsp;

The barn was moved back into town, just yards from its original location. And presto – Wilson now has a unique event venue for weddings, family and class reunions, retirement parties.

You name it. If there’s reason to celebrate a gathering large or small, the ambience of The Barn will help provide memories that won’t soon be forgotten.

“It was really packed during the Czech Festival time,” Merrill said of the annual after-harvest festival held on the last weekend in July.

Once moved to its new home, the inside of the building underwent an entire renovation, complete with iron beams for reinforcement.

Those beams, Merrill explained, were necessary to hold the weight of guests entertaining in the loft, which stretches the entire length and width of The Barn.

Preserving the history of old buildings is a must, Merrill says.

Rather than cover the hay-drop hole in the floor, a large glass structure around the hole lets people view the floor below.

Numerous tables cover the first floor, where customers can enjoy a drink from the fully stocked bar or a smoked BBQ sandwich.

Employees smoke The Barn’s meat (pulled pork, brisket, ribs) in a large smoker. The large meals are prepared at the hotel and transported to The Barn’s smaller preparation kitchen to be kept warm.

Visitors’ eyes light up as they absorb the nostalgia that permeates the building. Wood from the original structure is the hallmark of The Barn.

A large brace from the soffit of the town’s old train depot hangs on one wall. A photo of the depot hangs nearby, just above an old baggage carrier and a suitcase from days gone by.

Numerous pieces of artwork adorn the walls of a seating area lined with bead-board from the office of the racehorse barn.

Customers can dine in one of the stalls that was preserved from the original barn and re-created – or they can choose to sit outdoors near a fire pit.

One wall offers seating from an old buckboard, another a bench from an old railroad depot.

A massive mirrored back bar that covers a wall on the southwest corner of the building came from a hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

The Barn will add more character next month. By Christmastime, anyone driving by the south side of the barn will be treated to large murals of a train engine and the old depot.

The murals, painted by artist Ace Walker from Prague, Okla., were funded by the Department of Commerce for the Wilson Tourism Hub, in cooperation with the Kansas Czechs, Inc.&nbsp;

Up to 80 people can be seated on the first floor, and up to 150 people can entertain upstairs. People can rent either floor or the entire barn.

But anyone thinking of booking an office Christmas party may have to wait until the 2023 holidays.&nbsp;

“We’re pretty packed for Christmas parties,” Merrill said. “I love Christmas. I can hardly wait.”

 </figure>It’s not just a catchy descriptive name for this community located smack-dab in the middle of rural Kansas.The 40-by-60 square-foot building, whose name was soon shortened to The Barn, is the real deal.The barn was built in 1907 near the city’s hotel as the home for stud race horses. It was moved to a working farm less than half a mile away in 1964.One day while talking with Frank Princ, the owner of that farm just down the road west of the hotel, Merrill mentioned the necessity of a conference center in town.Princ told Merrill he was no longer using the barn – music to the ears of the local entrepreneur.“Well, I have a good idea,” Merrill told Princ.&nbsp;<figure>

And presto – Wilson now has a unique event venue for weddings, family and class reunions, retirement parties.You name it. If there’s reason to celebrate a gathering large or small, the ambience of The Barn will help provide memories that won’t soon be forgotten.“It was really packed during the Czech Festival time,” Merrill said of the annual after-harvest festival held on the last weekend in July.Once moved to its new home, the inside of the building underwent an entire renovation, complete with iron beams for reinforcement.Those beams, Merrill explained, were necessary to hold the weight of guests entertaining in the loft, which stretches the entire length and width of The Barn.Preserving the history of old buildings is a must, Merrill says.Rather than cover the hay-drop hole in the floor, a large glass structure around the hole lets people view the floor below.Numerous tables cover the first floor, where customers can enjoy a drink from the fully stocked bar or a smoked BBQ sandwich.<figure>

The large meals are prepared at the hotel and transported to The Barn’s smaller preparation kitchen to be kept warm.Visitors’ eyes light up as they absorb the nostalgia that permeates the building. Wood from the original structure is the hallmark of The Barn.A large brace from the soffit of the town’s old train depot hangs on one wall. A photo of the depot hangs nearby, just above an old baggage carrier and a suitcase from days gone by.Numerous pieces of artwork adorn the walls of a seating area lined with bead-board from the office of the racehorse barn.<figure>

 </figure>Customers can dine in one of the stalls that was preserved from the original barn and re-created – or they can choose to sit outdoors near a fire pit.One wall offers seating from an old buckboard, another a bench from an old railroad depot.A massive mirrored back bar that covers a wall on the southwest corner of the building came from a hotel in Kansas City, Mo.The Barn will add more character next month. By Christmastime, anyone driving by the south side of the barn will be treated to large murals of a train engine and the old depot.The murals, painted by artist Ace Walker from Prague, Okla., were funded by the Department of Commerce for the Wilson Tourism Hub, in cooperation with the Kansas Czechs, Inc.&nbsp;<figure>

People can rent either floor or the entire barn.But anyone thinking of booking an office Christmas party may have to wait until the 2023 holidays.&nbsp;“We’re pretty packed for Christmas parties,” Merrill said. “I love Christmas. Historic barn provides unique event center in Wilson

But as more people get to know their tricks, they’re switching it up. So instead of contacting you about a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/media/79942#:~:text=Scam%20artists%20are%20pretending%20to,They%20play%20on%20your%20fears.">tax debt and making threats to get you to pay up</a>, scammers may send you a text about a “tax rebate” or some other tax refund or benefit. Here’s what to know about the new twist.

The text messages may look legit, and mention a “tax rebate” or “refund payment.” But no matter what the text says, it’s a scammer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/small-businesses/cybersecurity/phishing">phishing</a>&nbsp;for your information. And if you click on the link to claim “your refund,” you’re exposing yourself to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft">identity theft</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-remove-avoid-malware">malware</a>&nbsp;that the scammer could install on your phone.

If someone contacts you about a tax rebate or refund:

●Never click on links in unexpected texts.&nbsp;Don’t share personal information with anyone who contacts you out of the blue. Always use a website or phone number you know is real.

●Know that the IRS won’t call, email or text to contact you for the first time.&nbsp;They’ll always start by sending you a letter. If you want to confirm, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

●Find the status of any pending refund on the IRS official website.&nbsp;Visit&nbsp;<a href="https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp">Where’s My Refund</a>.

●Report unsolicited texts or emails&nbsp;claiming to be the IRS. Forward a screenshot or the email as an attachment to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:phishing@irs.gov">phishing@irs.gov</a>.

One thing that instantly puts the spirit of the season at risk is comparison, because it doesn’t just steal your joy—it steals your paycheck, too. One minute you’re scrolling through social media, then suddenly you’re impulse buying matching plaid outfits for the whole family because your friend posted pictures of her family in matching outfits, and you want your family to look festive and put-together too . . . and the spiral continues. 3. Put the extra money toward experiences

Speaking of budgets, let’s talk about what to do when you have a little extra room in your Christmas budget. Why not buy some hot cocoa, load up your family in the car, and go look at Christmas lights? Or you can give a few dollars to each of your kids and take them to pick out new ornaments for the tree. Or better yet, buy some cheap craft supplies and let them create their own ornaments. The point is to think about what would be fun for you and your family, then take that extra money and turn into a memorable experience. MARION COUNTY - A Hillsboro teen was killed in an ATV accident Saturday night southeast of Marion.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 16-year-old Hillsboro boy, was westbound on 170th Street when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The Yamaha ATV left the roadway and came to rest in the ditch. The teen was not wearing a helmet, the Kansas Highway Patrol noted.

The accident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday on 170th Street 1.2 miles west of U.S. Highway 77.
