On Monday, several small fires occurred at the Salina Municipal Landfill. 

The fires started as a direct result of a few dozen lithium, nickel-cadmium, and alkaline batteries disposed of in one load at the landfill. Lithium batteries have a tendency to start fires in the waste when impacted by machinery at the landfill and/or in the sanitation trucks during hauling. 

Landfill operators are diligent in watching for and removing batteries as they arrive, however, they cannot locate them all especially when mixed with other waste.

While lithium batteries are normally safe, they may cause injury or damage if they have design defects, are made of low quality materials, are assembled incorrectly, are used or recharged improperly or are damaged.

In February 2018, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Status Report on High Energy Density Batteries Project reported over 25,000 overheating or fire incidents involving more than 400 types of lithium battery-powered consumer products that occurred over a five-year period.

When lithium batteries fail to operate safely or are damaged, they may present a fire and/or explosion hazard. Damage from improper use, storage or charging may also cause lithium batteries to fail. Damage to lithium batteries can occur immediately or over a period of time, from physical impact, exposure to certain temperatures (≥130° and ≤32°) and/or improper charging may also cause lithium batteries to fail.

Saline County residents and local non-profits (no businesses) can properly dispose of lithium, sealed lead acid (&lt;11 pounds), button cell (watch), rechargeable lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and nickel metal hydride batteries at the Salina Household Hazardous Waste Facility,&nbsp;315 E. Elm Street. The facility is open from&nbsp;7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of each month.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

A local man was arrested after he allegedly threatened another man with hedge trimmers in central Salina Tuesday evening.

At approximately 6 p.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to the 300 block of W. Crawford Street for a belated report of trespassing. When they arrived, they found Cole Marlow, 37, of Salina, wielding a pair of black and yellow hedge trimmers in the parking lot at 302 W. Crawford, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Marlow was walking toward the 600 block of S. Ninth Street and yelling at a 22-year-old Salina man. Marlow allegedly was wildly swinging the hedge trimmers and advancing toward the other man.

The 22-year-old man told police that he had been on his porch and had a verbal exchange with Marlow, who was holding the hedge trimmers. Marlow allegedly began aggressively swinging the hedge trimmers and moving toward the other man, who was concerned that Marlow would attack him or his family, Forrester said. It was at that point that officers arrived.

Additionally, it was found that Marlow allegedly trespassed in a yard in the 500 block of S. 10th Street, Forrester said.

Marlow was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

OCCK Transportation recognizes driver safety for 2022

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Recently I attended the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Fusion Conference, which is a joint event between the Women’s, Programing &amp; Education, and Young Farmers &amp; Ranchers committees, in Jacksonville, Fla. One of my Collegiate Farm Bureau students won the state discussion meet and competed in the national event. In addition to coaching, I was a workshop presenter on the topic of work-life balance, with a former YFR leader from Florida that I am friends with. As I was packing to leave for the event, Marc and I were discussing my planned agenda for the event and I mentioned the workshop with my friend Morgan. Marc got a slightly confused look on his face and asked, “Do I know this Morgan?” That’s what is funny about the relationships we build at these events. Someone I have only known a few years, visit with at an occasional national event, and am friends with on Facebook feels like so much more than just a professional acquaintance. Morgan and I have a connection through our jobs, mutual respect as leaders and a shared understanding of our industry and lifestyle. Our friendship is easy because our lives are very similar. I also caught up with my college advisor from California, who I rarely get to see in person and is probably the most impactful mentor of my life. I visited with a fellow presenter who I have judged with in the past and respect tremendously. The conference organizer is a friend with whom I have a long professional and personal relationship. I am motivated and encouraged by time shared with my “far-away friends.” I come home with an enthusiastic and renewed sense of purpose. Great people are one of the reasons I love attending these conferences. In addition to seeing old friends, I love getting to know new people with interesting backgrounds, listen to the perspectives of speakers and learn what is happening in other places. The information gained through new connections increases my knowledge, challenges my current views and often helps me find new solutions for problems I wrestle with at home. Early in my career, I remember discussing as a board member whether or not to support a staff member’s request to attend a national conference. The board was divided in support of professional development verses funding constraints. The decision eventually came down to the board chair, who chose to approve the request.

He told the group, “One of the most valuable things I have done in my career is attend conferences and meetings. I have always come away better and think there is tremendous value in participating.” Coming back better is one of the reasons we step outside our normal zones. I recently read that one of the most accurate predictors of career attainment is continuous learning and skill development. People who never stop growing are better off that people who were rose to top positions early career and maintained that position.

There is tremendous value and opportunity that comes when you attend events like conferences, seminars and conventions. Sometimes you have to step away from your normal circle of interaction to find new and interesting things to bring back.&nbsp; If you have the chance to attend a conference or event, especially in a different part of the country, I hope you will embrace the opportunity, find people who make you better and gather lots of ideas that you can bring home to make your world just a little bit better.

INSIGHT: Connecting across the country

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Chevy HHR driven by Carol A. Bolgren, 79, Coolidge, Arizona, was southbound on U.S. 81 approximately three miles north of Interstate 70.

The SUV entered the east ditch. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV crossed the roadway, struck the guardrail in the west ditch and&nbsp; came to rest partially in the right lane.

EMS transported Bolgren to Salina Regional Health Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

In selecting award winners, the Scholarship Committee considered proficiency in verbal and writing skills. Other important factors are academic records, test scores, and community service in which the student may have participated.

Seven students have won Hansen Leader of Tomorrow scholarships. These awards are for $10,000 and may be renewable for three additional years. Renewal of scholarships is based upon continued regard for the principles, which guided the success of the late Dane G. Hansen, a 3.00 or better GPA at the college level and a letter describing progress towards educational goals. This year’s winners are:

More than 700 runners already registered for Salina Crossroads Marathon

Scott Gardner has been appointed the City of Salina's director of computer technology.

City Manager Mike Schrage made the announcement in a news release this morning.

“Scott’s skill set and experience is unique and has allowed him to step into a key management vacancy to support our operations. Transitioning Scott to the full-time role will allow him and his team to assess departmental and organizational needs and determine how to align to meet those needs,” Schrage said.

Gardner has been serving as the interim computer technology director since May 2022.

Gardner has served the city since 2018 in the process improvement director role. Prior to joining the city staff, he worked at Raytheon Aircraft in various capacities.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in electronic technology from the University of Northern Iowa and obtained a master’s in business administration from Kansas Wesleyan University. He has various Lean/Six Sigma certifications including Master Black Belt, Black Belt, and Innovation Engineering Black Belt.

City of Salina names Gardner computer technology director

Police are looking for the person believed to be involved in thefts from a south Salina retail store on three different days.

An officer was sent to Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street, on Sunday for the report of a theft. According to information from Walmart loss prevention personnel, a Black male wearing khaki pants, a blue shirt, and a hat on backward entered the store at approximately 12:35 p.m., Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

While in the store, the man took a red Ozark Trail backpack, a bag of Purina One dog food, and another unknown item, according to the loss prevention report. Total loss was estimated at just over $20, Forrester said.

One of the loss prevention personnel followed the man, who exited the store through the garden center, but lost sight of him.

The officer returned to the store on Monday to follow up on the case and was told by loss prevention personnel that the same Black male had stolen items on Wednesday and Saturday. On Wednesday, the man was seen entering the store at approximately 6:55 p.m. While in the store, he grabbed a black, 45-gallon trash can, a car battery charger, and a subwoofer for a car, Forrester said. The theft prevention device from the subwoofer was found on a shelf. Those items were valued at just under $400.

Once again, the man exited through the lawn and garden center, this time pushing a cart into the door, causing $400 in damage, Forrester said.

Information about the incident on Saturday was still being gathered, Forrester said.

MINNEAPOLIS - Native Plants to Support Native Bees will be the topic of a free presentation by Horticulture Extension Agent Jason Graves on Monday.

The presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 20 in the meeting room of the Ottawa County Courthouse, 307 N. Concord in Minneapolis. According to information from Graves, there are more than 4,000 species of native and solitary bees in the United States. These pollinators directly connect to human health and well-being, and deserve to be understood, appreciated, and preserved, he noted.  This training will explore native bees and how gardeners can utilize native plants to create a welcoming habitat for these essential pollinators.

The seminar is a full-day educational opportunity for tenants, landlords, property managers, realtors, attorneys, social workers, service providers, and all other individuals interested in learning about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. 

Guest speakers include Viraj Amin of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Gary Kirkman of U.S. Housing Consultants, Lance Cochran of Kennedy Berkley, Casey Johnson and Corinne Petrik of Kansas Legal Services, and Deborah Bayless of Center for Conflict Resolution. The event features multiple performances across three days – March 20-22 – the majority of which involve guest artist, composer, and saxophonist Rick Hirsch.

Hirsch is an award-winning composer, arranger and saxophonist who began his career as personal music copyist for Bob Mintzer and Toshiko Akiyoshi. He has written music for jazz icons Yusef Lateef, Tito Puente and the Yellowjackets, as well as for the Penn State Blue Band. Hirsch has an active teaching studio and makes frequent appearances as a guest conductor. He holds degrees from UMass-Amherst and North Illinois.

The KWU faculty jazz group, Sharp Eleven, opens the festival March 20 with a 7 p.m. performance in the Student Activities Center. Department Chair James McAllister will be on saxophone, Steve Lueth plays piano, Dean Kranzler is on drums and Gustaf Applequist ’14 joins on double bass. Vocalist Michelle Cardinal Dolan, KWU’s director of development, stewardship and alumni, will join the group for several selections.

The following evening, March 21, at 7 p.m. in Sams Chapel, marks the debut of the Salina Area All-Star Big Band. This group comprises talented musicians from across the region, who will perform many of Hirsch’s compositions. Hirsch will conduct the group.

The final day of the festival sees Hirsch work with visiting high school and middle school jazz bands, as well as KWU students. That evening’s 7 p.m. performance in Sams Chapel will include Great Bend High School Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Grant Mathews, and the Salina Central High School Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Guillermo Rodriguez.

“This event is a great opportunity for us to bring a world-class artist and composer to Salina,” said McAllister. “My hope is that this festival becomes an annual event, to help the region celebrate and showcase this truly American art form.”

All of the concert performances are open to the public at no charge.
