The event is scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway, and is open to the public at no charge.

While economic conditions have significantly cooled, business at 1 Vision Aviation is hot as ever for the full-service MRO company that its owner and president Jim Sponder has built up in Salina.

“We’re doing heavy checks, paint, interiors, all in a one-stop shop. That’s us. We do it all,” he proudly proclaimed.

The aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul company with its general aviation services and company headquarters in Sioux City, Iowa, has leased another 60,746 square feet of space in two Salina Regional Airport buildings, from the Salina Airport Authority.

1 Vision launched its Salina location in&nbsp;September of 2019, starting with the 143,000-square-foot Hangar 959 — a.k.a Big Bertha. In terms of hangar space, Sponder said his company leases the most of any tenant, renting 203,746 square feet across three buildings.

“The biggest reason is that we’ve grown our customer base and have added contracts from one of the largest leasing companies in the world along with a couple of DOD (Department of Defense) contracts,” Sponder said.

These additions&nbsp;include maintenance on 150 to 170 passenger&nbsp;Airbus A320s, King Airs, and DeHavilland Dash-8 airplanes.

Along with the expansion comes the challenge of finding more workers. Sponder started with fewer than 50 in Salina three years ago and now has roughly 250 on the payroll, working multiple shifts around the clock, seven days a week.

“We need to be at 500 in a short period of time, more than doubling the workforce from a year ago,” said the 1 Vision boss.

Openings are mostly for Airframe and Powerplant (A&amp;P) mechanics.

“The work’s here. I just don’t know where all the experienced workers went,” Sponder said. The company offers hiring bonuses to employees, a 401k plan, and insurance.

“We’re throwing some great incentives out there&nbsp;trying to find more employees&nbsp;and&nbsp;to grow,” he said. “If I could raise the roster to 1,500 people today, I would, but they’re just not out there.”

Locals are helping, including a close neighbor,&nbsp;the Kansas State University Aerospace and Technology Campus. Apprentices who work at 1 Vision can gain on-the-job training over time to meet FAA requirements. Once approved, they can perform their testing to become an FAA-certified A&amp;P mechanic at K-State-Salina.

“Before, mechanics were going to a school in Tennessee for testing.” Sponder said. “This partnership benefits both of us and we plan on working with the Kansas State University Aerospace and Technology Campus to develop more ways to support each other&nbsp;in the future.”

Sponder also heaped praise on Tim Rogers, the Airport Authority executive director along with his staff.

“I couldn’t ask for anything better at the Salina airport,” he said. “If it wasn’t for Tim and his team advocating for 1 Vision during COVID, there’s a good chance we wouldn’t be here today.”

Sponder reiterated his love of Salina, and his part ownership of the champion Salina Liberty arena football team.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The four park locations will accept and recycle Christmas trees into mulch through Jan. 31. The mulch will be used around newly planted trees and to surface nature trails.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is looking for a Salina man who escaped custody early this morning after a multi-county chase.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, a Saline County Sheriff's deputy near the intersection of N. Broadway Boulevard and State Street noticed a 1992 GMC Sierra pickup with an expired license plate, Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning. 

The deputy attempted to stop the pickup, but it took off and a pursuit ensued that involved multiple law enforcement agencies, a number of Salina neighborhoods, and four counties.

At one point during the pursuit, the pickup stopped at the intersection of N. Brookville Road and Ottawa Road in northwestern Saline County at the Ottawa County line, and deputies attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the pickup, identified as Steven Moss, 37, of Salina, instead allegedly backed the pickup into one of the Saline County Sheriff's Office's patrol SUVs and took off again, Hughes said.

The pursuit continued into parts of Ottawa County and Lincoln County, where Moss allegedly swerved at a Lincoln County Sheriff's patrol vehicle coming from the opposite direction, Hughes said. The pursuit ended near the intersection of Old Highway 40 and 11th Road west of Ellsworth, where Lincoln County Sheriff's personnel and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers were able to apprehend Moss and a passenger in the pickup, Shaylynn Koch, 27, of Salina.

Hughes said both were brought back to the Saline County Jail, however, Moss was able to slip out of a handcuff and escape from the back of a Saline County Sheriff's vehicle while it was at the sallyport of the jail. A foot chase ensued, but Moss was able to elude law enforcement personnel and escaped. The escape occurred at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

Salina man escapes custody after multi-county chase

A Salina man was arrested Tuesday on multiple requested charges that included internet trading in child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that the Salina Police Department received a report in November of 2021 from a Wichita Police detective who was assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

"That detective, through their investigation, was able to develop Lucas Phelps as a suspect who was possibly trading child pornography on the internet," Forrester said.

With the information received and further investigation, the Salina Police Department was able to conduct a search warrant on Phelps' Salina residence, where computer equipment and a cellphone were seized, he said. 

"A search warrant was conducted on those items and we were able to able to establish probable cause for Lucas Phelps," Forrester said.

A warrant through Saline County District Court was then issued for Phelps, 37, of Salina, and he was arrested by a Saline County Sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop Tuesday.

Forrester said Phelps was arrested on the following requested charges.

●Six counts of internet trading in child pornography

●12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child

Forrester said no local victims were identified during the investigation of Phelps. The investigation is ongoing.

We live in a crazy world where we get into heated debates with strangers on the internet and show we like stuff by pressing tiny digital hearts. Who came up with this weirdness? And as we have more and more digital interactions, the data shows we’re losing actual human connection. A report by Harvard suggests that about 36% of Americans (including 51% of mothers with small children and 61% of young adults) experience “serious loneliness.”<a href="https://mcc.gse.harvard.edu/reports/loneliness-in-america" target="_blank">1</a>

And even though we tend to see independence as a strength, the stress of disconnection contributes to a ton of issues, including substance abuse, anxiety, depression and heart disease.<a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b7c56e255b02c683659fe43/t/6021776bdd04957c4557c212/1612805995893/Loneliness+in+America+2021_02_08_FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">2</a>&nbsp;Those are some pretty high stakes—which is why we need to do what we can to change those statistics. Here’s what we all need to know about human connection and how to achieve it.

Human connection is what happens when two or more people choose to engage in vulnerable interactions where each person is heard, seen, known and valued. You’re connecting with others if you feel better about yourself, or the world, after you’ve been with them. At the same time, connection is a risk because people may accept you, challenge you, love you, or call you out.

For your closest relationships, connection is being fully known and fully loved. Sadly, most of us believe we have to choose between being known and loved. We hide and edit parts of ourselves that have gotten us hurt before. We live in the shallow end of our relationships, afraid to go deep because of the potential consequences. &nbsp;

But real connection is like scuba diving. You can’t stay on the surface if you want to have rich and meaningful relationships.

Close and intimate relationships might sound like rainbows and butterflies, but they’re actually super messy. Sooner or later, you’re going to screw them up. You’re going to be&nbsp;disappointed.&nbsp;But a messy relationship doesn’t always mean you’re doing something wrong.

Human connection isn’t digital. Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and any other platform I’m not cool enough to know about&nbsp;do not foster human connection. They can act as a starting point or provide information updates, but they don’t offer the depth and excitement of true connection.

Human connection is not proximity, either. You can be close to someone physically but not be&nbsp;connected&nbsp;to them. If you’re married, you know what it’s like to be in the middle of a fight or struggling to get on the same page: That six-inch space between you in bed can feel like 1,000 miles. Connection needs proximity, but proximity does not guarantee connection.&nbsp;

Learning to connect with people is a lifelong adventure. It’s going to look different for everyone, but here are a few practices to help steer you in the right direction:

Technology is often counterproductive to connection. As much as possible, choose movement and/or conversation with people over screen time. A new rule in my home is this: When someone speaks, all phones go down and all eyes go to the person. I want everyone in my home to feel more valuable than a flashy metal box.

Quality time comes from quantity time. If you want connection, make time for it. Turn off Netflix and call a buddy to invite them over. Stop spending your nights and weekends checking in on work, and have dinner out together or take your kids to a park.&nbsp;Make time&nbsp;for people.

This one seems pretty basic, but it makes an incredible difference in how connected you feel to someone. Eye contact is a simple and powerful way to create connection. And while you’re looking people in the eye, put down your screens and take out your headphones or earbuds. Physically demonstrate that you’re connected.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

When people are talking to you, pay attention. Listen. Focus on what they’re saying. Ask follow-up questions. Dig deeper. Show people you care by practicing the&nbsp;art of conversation.&nbsp;

Be generous with forgiveness and grace

Relationships are risky, and they are messy. We live in a cancel culture that is constantly putting people on trial, scrutinizing their every move, and giving them death sentences for their first offense. Be different.&nbsp;Forgive.&nbsp;Be hospitable. Extend grace, compassion and forgiveness to people‚ just like you’d want someone to do for you. Redemption is the best part of every good story.

Find groups that matter to you and be an involved member

Connection should first happen in our most intimate circles with friends and family. But eventually, we should all consider how we can be an engaged member of the larger community around us. From church to school to nonprofits to local politics, follow the thread of interest that connects you to a group of people you care about. Be present. Be engaged. Let your walls down. Remember, connection is a choice. Proximity alone won’t do the trick.

DELONY: Prioritize human connection in the new year

MANHATTAN — When people talk about health, often it is focused on the individual and how they are feeling that day, but a Kansas State University assistant professor says we need to think more broadly on the topic.&nbsp;

“Health is more than simply not being sick or not having an injury, but really it is much bigger than that,” said Kendra Kirchmer, assistant professor of interior architecture and product design. “It’s not just our genes, but it is also our everyday behaviors, our physical environment, and our social networks that are big contributors to our health.” &nbsp;

She said that issues found in the built environment, those places that we live, work, learn, and play, can impact health outcomes in a negative way. For example, limited access to healthy food, lack of transportation networks, and lack of access to jobs that pay enough to meet the cost of living in an area, can all influence a person’s health directly or indirectly. She added that socially there are limitations as well if people don’t have access to places that support community gatherings.&nbsp;

“Healthcare providers are good at addressing the downstream outcomes of these situations, but architects and designers also have a role to play as collaborators and in being advocates for the community upstream during the planning stages,” Kirchmer said. “As designers, we need to work collaboratively across disciplines to create healthy places that foster equity and community where people can build social networks.”&nbsp;

She said rural areas and urban cities with easy access to grocery stores, banks, laundromats and libraries are essential to a community’s well-being.&nbsp;

“Public spaces where people can come together are critical and it is important that they are designed in a way that is inclusive and welcoming, so people know that they do belong there,” Kirchmer said. &nbsp;

On a personal level, Kichmer said there are things people can do to make their home environments better.&nbsp;

“People who love nature can bring plants indoors and allow daylight to enter their space,” she said. &nbsp;

For remote workers, she encourages people to have a dedicated space to support the type of work that they do. &nbsp;

“There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for what you could do at your home, but there are lots of little improvements that can be made. Start by being reflective and taking a minute to assess what is making you feel good right now and what is not, and the solution may be as simple as removing clutter.”&nbsp;

She added that socially there are limitations as well if people don’t have access to places that support community gatherings.&nbsp;“Healthcare providers are good at addressing the downstream outcomes of these situations, but architects and designers also have a role to play as collaborators and in being advocates for the community upstream during the planning stages,” Kirchmer said. “As designers, we need to work collaboratively across disciplines to create healthy places that foster equity and community where people can build social networks.”&nbsp;She said rural areas and urban cities with easy access to grocery stores, banks, laundromats and libraries are essential to a community’s well-being.&nbsp;“Public spaces where people can come together are critical and it is important that they are designed in a way that is inclusive and welcoming, so people know that they do belong there,” Kirchmer said. &nbsp;On a personal level, Kichmer said there are things people can do to make their home environments better.&nbsp;“People who love nature can bring plants indoors and allow daylight to enter their space,” she said. &nbsp;For remote workers, she encourages people to have a dedicated space to support the type of work that they do. &nbsp;“There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for what you could do at your home, but there are lots of little improvements that can be made. Start by being reflective and taking a minute to assess what is making you feel good right now and what is not, and the solution may be as simple as removing clutter.”&nbsp;

To give a visual outlet to that sense, Chin utilized thread as the primary medium on a reclaimed quilt and unraveled thread over the surface.&nbsp;Then she stitched it together randomly and repeated this process multiple times.&nbsp;The process of unraveling thread on the quilted top allowed her to execute free and natural movements, a process that echoes the impression of the transient images and fluidity of reality.

Citizens Of Ottawa County, it has been brought to our attention that several of you have received a letter from “Tekoa Da Silva” wanting to buy your land. I did some research on Mr. Da Silva on the internet and he has done the same thing in many different counties in Kansas where citizens have been warned about doing business with him. I called and spoke with Mr. Da Silva or someone claiming to be him, regarding the letters. I notified Edmond City PD about Mr. Da Silva and the activity we are dealing with here in our County.

First, Mr. Da Silva does not have the funds to purchase your ground at the low offer he gave or any offer to be honest. He admitted this to me over the phone. Second, the “Purchase Agreement Form” does not appear to be a legitimate document and would not be legally binding. Third, the address that he has on the letter and the purchase agreement is only a PO Box in Edmond OK, it is not an actual business address.

Regardless of whether the document is legal or not Mr. Da Silva is asking for personal information that you should never give freely to people. The world we live in today is not as honest as it once was. This is not how normal business is conducted, why would someone want to purchase something sight unseen. We will do everything we can at our office to protect our citizens who aren’t as familiar with these scams. We are asking for family and friends who can help educate and protect others from this kind of activity to do so.

Ottawa County Sheriff takes to Facebook to warn of property scam

JEWELL COUNTY - A small earthquake shook far southwestern Jewell County late Wednesday afternoon.

The 2.6 magnitude quake struck at 5:59 p.m. and was centered just west of 20 Road between B Road and C Road, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

Minor quake rattles southwestern Jewell County Wednesday

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln conferred 1,288 degrees during commencement exercises Dec. 16 and 17 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The 1,262 graduates are from 50 countries, 41 states and more than 170 Nebraska communities.

Sen. Deb Fischer delivered the undergraduate commencement address Dec. 17. Katrina Jagodinsky, Susan J. Rosowski Associate Professor of history at Nebraska, spoke to the graduate and professional degree earners Dec. 16.

Chancellor Ronnie Green presided over the ceremonies.
