The Salina Fire Department this afternoon announced the death of Battalion Chief John Goertzen.

Salina Fire Chief Tony Sneidar told Salina Post that Goertzen was off duty at the time of his death Friday. No other details are being provided at this time.

"We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and all of his friends and co-workers during this difficult time. Please, keep them in your thoughts and prayers," the department noted in a news release.

Sneidar praised Goertzen for his dedication, professionalism, and compassion, and noted that the entire department was devastated at the news of his passing.

Goertzen served as battalion chief for the past five years, according to information from the department. He also served as a  firefighter/EMT, fire engineer/EMT, and fire captain during his 27 years with the Salina Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements for Goertzen are pending.

Illustrator, printmaker, and musician Dan Grissom has designed the 2023 Smoky Hill River Festival print.

Grissom resides in Austin, Texas, but is originally from rural Louisiana. Childhood summer days spent exploring the forests around a nearby creek fostered a love of nature and animals that continues to find its way into his work. His primary focus is screen printing, although his background is in relief printing and painting.

He received a bachelor's degree in graphic design from Northwestern State University in Louisiana. After graduating, he pursued a master's degree in painting and printmaking at Stephen F. Austin State University in East Texas.

The print is a hand-painted 4-color screen print with custom mixed colors. With screen printing, each color layer is printed one at a time and allowed to dry before moving on to the next color layer.

“I've titled this piece Great Blue Heron on the River because I sometimes like to keep my titles simple and descriptive. I'm quite pleased with how this turned out, and I hope it transports you to a peaceful place like creating it did for me,” Grissom said.

Grissom’s work is colorful and marked by minimal, naturalistic compositions and sometimes very intricate line work. His subject matter varies but often involves nature and animals with subtle storytelling elements.

“While researching the wildlife around Salina, Kansas, for this print, I was transported right back to those childhood summer days sitting by the creek," Grissom said. "The landscapes and animals around Salina are pretty similar to what I grew up surrounded by in central Louisiana, so I knew I'd feel at home creating this piece. I've always loved spotting a Great Blue Heron in the wild, and when I saw that those were prominent around Salina, I knew I wanted that to be the focus. I grew up frequently seeing their paler cousin, the Egret, in Louisiana. Other details you can find in this piece are some deer, a dragonfly, some turtles on a log, and a beaver dam.”

Smoky Hill River Festival print artist announced

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois issued a reminder today that second-half taxes for real estate and personal property are due May 10.

The 2022 tax statements, with remittance stubs for both first-half and second-half taxes, were mailed out last November. There will not be a separate notice sent for second-half taxes.

"Please send the remittance stub from the bottom of the tax statement with the payment. Please remember to indicate on the stub if you want a paid receipt returned to you," Dubois noted in a news release.

If you are unable to find your statement, call the Saline County Treasurer's Office at 785-309-5860 for the amount due and the tax ID number. A copy of the statement can be emailed or mailed upon request.

DuBois also indicated that if 2022 first-half taxes have not been paid, interest is due.

"Please call the Treasurer’s Office for the correct amount prior to sending payment," he noted.

Saline County Treasurer: second-half taxes due May 10

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a west Salina tavern early Friday morning.

Just after 2 a.m. Friday, a masked man with a gun in hand entered through the rear door at Hank's Tavern, 116 S. Broadway Boulevard, Salina Police Lieutenant Jim Feldman said this morning. The man pointed the gun at a female employee and asked where the money was.

Feldman said the man then took a money bag with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. He was last seen riding eastbound from the tavern on a bicycle.

The woman, and several other people who were still in the bar, were not injured, he said.

The robber was described as a 5'5" to 5'10" average build white male in his mid-20s to 30s. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray pants, and black gloves, and had a mask over his face, possibly a bandana, Feldman said.

Surveillance cameras were on site and police plan to review video, Feldman said.

Registration is now open for Kansas Wesleyan University's Women in Leadership Conference.

The event will be emceed by Luci Larson, owner of Action Travel, Inc., and is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. March 30 in Mabee Arena. In addition to the speakers, there will be time for networking. Appetizers will be served.

KWU's Women in Leadership set for March 30; registration open

I’ve having some problems with my parents, and I’m hoping you can help. Last summer I borrowed $2,500 from them, and it is taking me longer to pay them back than we agreed. Since the pay back date passed, they have made several comments about money when we’re together, and our relationship seems strained. I have taken steps in the last couple of months to become more financially responsible. I am now doing things like living on a budget, and putting something from each paycheck into a savings account. How should I approach this issue with them?

Loaning money&nbsp;to, or borrowing money&nbsp;from,&nbsp;relatives or friends often leads to bruised feelings.&nbsp;I’m sorry you’re going through this, but I hope it will teach you and your folks a valuable lesson going forward. There’s nothing wrong with&nbsp;giving&nbsp;money in a situation like this, as long as you’re not enabling bad behavior by doing so. But a loan between&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/should-you-ever-loan-money-to-family" target="_blank">friends or family</a>&nbsp;is something I never recommend.

If they choose to hold a grudge there’s really not a lot you can do, especially if you took longer than agreed upon to pay them back. It just takes more time with some people—and in some cases even parents—for those kinds of things to heal. You have to remember, in their minds there’s an element of responsibility and trust involved here. But considering it’s your mom and dad we’re talking about, I’d say they’ll lighten up and become a little easier to be around with time.

Until that happens, though, maybe you could look for chances to mention your new approach to finances during conversations with them. Even something as simple as an off-hand remark about how much you were able to put into savings from your recent paychecks may encourage them to see things in a different light. Letting them know you’re actively working to change your ways and gain control of your finances could mean a lot to them.

The weather is thought to be the culprit of a power outage that darkened much of the downtown Salina area this afternoon.

According to an Evergy spokesperson, approximately 1,200 customers were without power at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. By 2:30 p.m., power had been restored to all but 165 customers. Those customers were to remain without power until an Evergy crew could replace a broken power pole in the N. 13th Street-W. Elm Street area, the spokesperson noted.

Weather was believed to be the cause of outage, the spokesperson said.

At the time of the outage, winds were gusting at or above 40 mph, according to information from the National Weather Service.

The celebration of Pi Day this week marks the occasion for political scientists to re-tell the famous “Indiana Pi Bill” story–and to warn Kansas legislators about the dangers of overreach and micromanagement.

March 14 (3.14) marks the celebration of Pi Day.&nbsp; Mathematicians, teachers, students, and others celebrate one of the best-known findings in mathematics.&nbsp; They bake pies--round, of course--create artwork incorporating circles, write “<a href="https://www.instructables.com/Piku-a-New-Genre-of-Poetry-for-Pi-Day/" target="_blank">pi-kus</a>” (haikus with 3, 1, and 4 syllables, respectively), and offer brief history lessons about geometry’s best-known value.&nbsp; One such story is that of the Indiana Pi Bill. Like most legends, this one is often told inaccurately.&nbsp;

The Indiana Pi Bill <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/kionasmith/2018/02/05/indianas-state-legislature-once-tried-to-legislate-the-value-of-pi/?sh=3e1ff359260a" target="_blank">originated in 1897</a>.&nbsp; Notwithstanding this hilarious “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0muhngkYeCs" target="_blank">Institute for Pi Research</a>” parody video made by Emporia State University professors in the 1980s, the bill did not actually purport to set pi equal to 3, nor did it have anything to do with Biblical literalism.&nbsp; It was not intended to make it easier for students to do their homework.&nbsp; In fact, the true story is even more interesting.

A renegade mathematician named Edward J. Goodwin claimed to have his own, unique proof showing that the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter was 3.2, not 22/7 as had been understood since ancient times.&nbsp; Goodwin failed to convince other mathematicians, so instead he sought to impose the new value by legislative fiat.&nbsp; The bill passed the Indiana House but when it reached the Senate, a mathematician named Clarence Abiathar Waldo was on hand to lobby for more science funding.&nbsp; Waldo set to work educating senators about the impossibility of legislating a mathematical value.&nbsp; The bill died, but a legend was born.

Unfortunately, the Kansas Legislature has not heeded the warning.&nbsp; Bills are moving this year that would legislate things best left to others.&nbsp; For example, legislation is moving quickly to ban the participation of transgender girls on girls’ sports teams.&nbsp; Never mind that the Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) already has <a href="https://www.kshsaa.org/public/pdf/transgenderpolicyrecommendations.pdf" target="_blank">strict regulations</a> on transgender girls who wish to do this.&nbsp; Legislators still think they know better.

Another example concerns attempts to ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.&nbsp; A budget proviso inserted by Rep. Steve Howe would ban diversity training for social service professions unless it is done to comply with federal or state law.&nbsp; However, many licensing boards require such training above and beyond federal and state requirements, and most state legislators lack the knowledge needed to properly evaluate what training is appropriate.&nbsp; The proviso could put Kansas care providers at odds with their licensure requirements, which in turn could create legal challenges and lead to insurance claims being denied.&nbsp; It could also compromise the quality of care.

Even though topics such as transgender athletes and professional licensure requirements are not as cut and dried as the value of pi, they still require oversight by those who know what they are doing.&nbsp; From the budget, to crime, to teacher shortages and a water crisis, the state legislature has plenty to do already without such meddling.&nbsp; Kansans deserve better.&nbsp; Unlike pi, state legislators do not have to be irrational.

ABILENE - Race organizers are preparing for the 2023 Eisenhower Marathon. 

The Marathon will be April 29, in Abilene. The race will start in Old Abilene Town and offers 5k, 10k, Half-Marathon, and Full-Marathon options.

The race began in 2003 under the leadership of June DeWeese and was one of only a handful of marathons in the Midwest. Today, Steve Cathey serves as race organizer. A Boston Marathon Qualifying Course, runners from 27 states are registered for the “fast and mostly flat” race.

&nbsp;“People love running the Eisenhower Marathon,” Cathey said. “Many people set personal records on this course.”

&nbsp;Another reason runners love coming to Abilene is the hospitality.&nbsp;

“The event&nbsp;provides big race swag and small-town hospitality; runners coming to town become part of the Abilene family!” he said. “Over the past three years of being the director, we have had many returning runners due to the amazing support of our staff on race day, making everything enjoyable for the participants!”

Runners headed to Abilene in April for Eisenhower Marathon

Local volunteers are working diligently to prepare for one of the largest spring farm shows in the Midwest. For over half a century there has been a farm show in Salina. The first show was comprised of small displays showcasing only local manufacturers.&nbsp; Fifty-seven years later, the Mid America Farm Expo, March 22-24, will offer attendees a close up look at 300 exhibits representing approximately 275 companies from across the United States. The show is free to the public and is expected to draw people from all across the Midwest.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Carl Garten, chairman of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce's agricultural committee, said he was a sixth grader when he attended the first farm show 57 years ago.&nbsp;

"I went with my dad to Kenwood Hall at the fairgrounds, and the show was just a few displays," Garten said. "When the show first started it was strictly for Salina manufacturers only."

According to the chamber, the expo began 57 years ago as part of a Agriculture Committee of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce project. It was named the Salina Materials Handling Show and had 44 exhibits on display on the Saline County Fairgrounds, now called the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center.

Garten said the largest percentage of expo visitors this year will come from western Kansas.&nbsp;

"We usually get a big draw from the northwest part of Kansas and to the west of here," Garten said. "We'll draw some from down south towards the Oklahoma border, and then north into Nebraska."&nbsp;

Attendance for this year's expo is expected to be as large as 8,000.&nbsp;

Cade Rensink, director for K-State Research and Extension's Central District said Extension's role in the expo focuses primarily on securing speakers for the event and advertising the event.

"We [K-State Research and Extension] have a pretty good network of folks to reach out to," Rensink said. "We travel enough throughout the state and throughout the country, that we know which folks are the premier experts on a certain topic."

Rensink said agricultural transition planning,&nbsp;where agricultural land, in part or in whole, changes hands, will be an important topic at this year's expo given the average age of agriculture producers is 66 years old.&nbsp;

"It's been a topic on people's minds for 20 years. People are always unfortunately, passing and farms have to transition. So it's always been something that's been talked about," Rensink said. "But we are in an ag cycle right now where at any given moment, there could be just this massive exodus from farming."

Rensink said K-State Research and Extension serves as a resource for ag producers who want to begin the process of transition planning.

"We want to help people and make sure they are well equipped when making this decision," Rensink said.

Shannon Ferrell, professor in agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University, will give a presentation about transition farming at at the farm expo later this month.

Other topics that will covered at this year's expo include: ●&nbsp; Mechanics of building a farm legacy: transactional&nbsp; tools ●&nbsp; Carbon credit programs ●&nbsp; Ag economy-"How are we looking?" ●&nbsp; Grain and livestock market outlook

Each year 50 – 75 volunteers including area wide school groups and FFA and 4H students, help to move into the venue space and set up. In the weeks prior to the event expo volunteers of all ages come together to go over event details and what all needs to happen in order to claim this year's expo a success.&nbsp;

Brandon Baugh, Bank of Tescott agriculture lender, said he has helped with the past six Mid America Farm Expos.

"Everybody getting together to put on a good show," Baugh said. "If you don't put on a good show every year, then it's really easy to lose it. So what it takes is help from everybody to make it all come together."

Baugh is a graduate of Fort Hays State University with dual degrees in general agriculture and agribusiness.&nbsp;

Volunteer coordinators, Raymond and Julie Bilson of Salina, said&nbsp; since retiring, volunteering has become their favorite activity.&nbsp;

"You gotta keep busy when you're retired," Raymond said. "You can't just watch the world out the window.&nbsp;It's a wonderful show and we enjoy working with all the volunteers and staff every year."

This will be Raymond and Julie's sixth year volunteering with the expo, and their first time coordinating volunteers.

"Nobody has volunteered all 57&nbsp; years of this show so far," Raymond said. "I mean, there are people who have done this for years and year and it makes our job easier."

Southeast of Saline's FFA chapter will be also be at the Expo on Wednesday, March 22nd. Students will present their projects and provide details about their chapter.

By NATE KING&nbsp; Salina PostLocal volunteers are working diligently to prepare for one of the largest spring farm shows in the Midwest. For over half a century there has been a farm show in Salina. The first show was comprised of small displays showcasing only local manufacturers.&nbsp; Fifty-seven years later, the Mid America Farm Expo, March 22-24, will offer attendees a close up look at 300 exhibits representing approximately 275 companies from across the United States. The show is free to the public and is expected to draw people from all across the Midwest.&nbsp;<h2>The first farm expo</h2>&nbsp;Carl Garten, chairman of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce's agricultural committee, said he was a sixth grader when he attended the first farm show 57 years ago.&nbsp;"I went with my dad to Kenwood Hall at the fairgrounds, and the show was just a few displays," Garten said. "When the show first started it was strictly for Salina manufacturers only."According to the chamber, the expo began 57 years ago as part of a Agriculture Committee of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce project. It was named the Salina Materials Handling Show and had 44 exhibits on display on the Saline County Fairgrounds, now called the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center.Garten said the largest percentage of expo visitors this year will come from western Kansas.&nbsp;"We usually get a big draw from the northwest part of Kansas and to the west of here," Garten said. "We'll draw some from down south towards the Oklahoma border, and then north into Nebraska."&nbsp;Attendance for this year's expo is expected to be as large as 8,000.&nbsp;<h2>K-State Research and Extension</h2>Cade Rensink, director for K-State Research and Extension's Central District said Extension's role in the expo focuses primarily on securing speakers for the event and advertising the event."We [K-State Research and Extension] have a pretty good network of folks to reach out to," Rensink said. MANHATTAN – For Kansas gardeners, St. Patrick’s Day means something much more than donning a favorite green outfit and heading to local celebrations.&nbsp;

Traditionally, the Irish holiday signals the date for planting&nbsp;potatoes.&nbsp;

“Actually, anytime from mid- to late-March is fine for potato planting,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham.&nbsp;

“Be sure to buy seed&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;rather than using those bought for cooking. Seed&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;are certified disease free and have plenty of starch to sprout as quickly as soil temperatures allow.”&nbsp;

Upham notes that most seed&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;can be cut into four pieces – “though large&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;may yield more,” he said. Each seed should weight between 1 ½ to 2 ounces, and likely more than one eye.&nbsp;

Each pound of seed&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;should yield 8 to 10 pieces, according to Upham.&nbsp;

“Cut the seed 2 to 3 days before planning so that freshly cut surfaces have a chance to suberize, or toughen, which provides a protective coating,” Upham said. “Storing seed in a warm location during suberization will speed the process.”&nbsp;

Upham recommends planting each seed piece 1 to 2 inches deep and 8 to 12 inches apart in rows.&nbsp;

“Though it is important to plant&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;in March, they emerge slowly,” he said. “It is often mid- to late-April before new plants poke their way through the soil. As the&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;grow, pull soil up to the base of the plants. New&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;are borne above the planted seed piece and it is important to keep sunlight from hitting the new&nbsp;potatoes.”&nbsp;

Upham said exposed&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;will turn green and produce a poisonous substance called solanine. Keeping the&nbsp;potatoes&nbsp;covered will prevent this.&nbsp;
