When Joyce Harlow envisioned the Lincoln Art Center in 1992, she was motivated by small-town pride and her belief that art was important for children. She recognized that a place for art would be a meaningful way to foster her farming community.

Thirty years on, the center has also become the hub of a supportive artist community stretching from Hays to Kansas City and beyond.

In 1986, Harlow, a painter and pastel artist who ran a professional photography studio in Lincoln, spoke up at a meeting of oil painters in Wichita. She offered a $500 purchase award from Lincoln County.

“I thought if nobody in Wichita can do this, I’m going to show them I can do this in Lincoln, a town of 1,500 people,” Harlow said.

She wrote letters to women’s groups, businesses and individuals, asking each for a $25 donation. That request that has continued every year since. The strategic first purchase for the public art collection was a painting by well-known Ellsworth artist Charles Rogers.

From that single moment, a collection of Kansas art, housed first at the Carnegie Library and soon the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lincolnartcenter.org/">Lincoln Art Center</a>, was born.

The center occupies a large storefront purchased with donations and renovated by volunteers. It has become a prime destination for artists across Kansas to exhibit sculpture, photography, textiles and painting. It has also hosted work by many college art faculties and student artists from the region and state.

Artist Linda Foster of Miltonvale praised the art center’s community feel.

“Two artists who exhibited recently said something I often hear: ‘You don’t know how fortunate you are to have a beautiful space like this.’ It is a beautiful space,” Foster said. “You’ve got this old building that’s been preserved and is being used, has a new life, brings people into the community.”

During an art show reception, it’s often a struggle to find a parking place on Lincoln Avenue, the town’s main street. While many small western Kansas towns look to attract tourists driving through&nbsp; I-70, Lincoln has worked on creating a livable and sustainable community.

Harlow credits board and community members for their care of the art center through website maintenance, hanging exhibitions, social media promotion, contributing food for receptions, supporting fundraisers, and spreading the word.&nbsp;

Each exhibition “is a jumping-off point to make connections in Lincoln,” Harlow said.&nbsp;“I like to find artists who are ready to try something new in a new space. It’s about our visitors to come and look, to appeal to a wide audience.”

I’ve observed over the past 20 years that the art center operates with agility and resilience. It remains grounded while energizing the artists whose work is featured in six exhibitions each year.

The list of artists on Lincoln’s exhibition record is a who’s who of Kansas creators. More artists will enter Lincoln’s orbit with an exhibit from botanical ink maker&nbsp;Amanda Wagner of Bennington, jewelry maker Jennifer Weigel of McPherson and fabric artist Kris Luber of Topeka. It opens Jan. 13 and runs through Feb. 25.

“It’s a nonprofit, low budget organization that focuses on people and their networks,” said Kris Heinze, the marketing coordinator for the Lincoln County Economic Development Foundation and an art center board member since 2005. “The art center has an impact on youth – getting elementary students for summer art camp or the high school art show in the spring. That exposes more local people to culture and a place to find connections.”

Lawrence artist Barbara Solberg was an early collaborator with Harlow on the public art collection.

“Joyce is a true gift to that community for what she’s given to the art center and how kids are being brought up to look at art,” she said.

Last year, Solberg and husband Tom Schmiedeler presented an exhibition of assemblages and photographs that opened during a sudden sleet and wind storm in April. Though only a few people braved the weather, Solberg said she’ll never forget a gift that night from 8-year-old Kaitlyn Heinze.

Kaitlyn examined Solberg’s works and wrote down what she thought of each one: “SELF, love kindness, difference, self + your spirit = makes you YOU.”&nbsp;

Her mother, board member Kris Heinze, explains that “Kaitlyn has been coming here since she was born. I smile because she has never not known about the art center. She makes connections with artists and they have fantastic conversations and it extends beyond that one night.”

Lori Brack is the author of "A Case for the Dead Letter Detective" (2021) and "Museum Made of Breath" (2018). In 2010, her poetic script for "Farmer’s Dream," a work of performance art based in Kansas agricultural history and labor by Ernesto Pujol, was published as "A Fine Place to See the Sky." The script is a collaboration with her grandfather’s 1907-1918 Kansas farming journals. OPINION: Lincoln Art Center - a vibrant, exploratory community for 30 years

The average monthly temperature in December at Salina Municipal Airport was 30.8 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees cooler than average. It was the 33rd coolest December since records began in 1900, and the coolest since 2013. 

The warmest daily temperature was 69 degrees on Dec. 2, and the coldest was 7 below zero on Dec. 22. Two mornings dropped below zero during the month, which was the most December below zero readings since 2016. 

Precipitation-wise, 0.93 inches was measured at the airport, which was only 0.19 inches below the monthly average.

Salina slightly cooler, drier than average in December

The JCB / Industrial Field Technician is responsible for performing service work ranging from basic maintenance to complex diagnostics on JCB agricultural and construction equipment. Repairs and maintenance will be performed on both customer-owned, and dealer-owned, equipment, both remotely and in the store. He / she is responsible for good customer communication as needed, ensuring a clean and safe work environment, continually develop technical skills with evolving products, including company sponsored training.

It’s game day. The high school athlete has her jersey on and prepares to go into action.&nbsp;&nbsp;All eyes are on her as she makes her move. But right now this athlete isn’t using a ball, she’s using a book.&nbsp;

On game days at Frankfort High School, the athletes don’t just perform on the court, they read to younger kids in the classroom. This is small town athletics at its best.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dean Dalinghaus is principal at Frankfort High School, home of the Wildcats. He went to high school at B&amp;B, graduated from K-State, and has been principal at Frankfort since 2006. He has observed the significance of hometown sports teams in&nbsp;rural&nbsp;communities.&nbsp;

“I think it brings the community together,” he said. “It creates a sense of pride. It’s the joy of seeing the kids put their heart and soul on the line, for the (town) name on the front of the jersey.”&nbsp;

Among the competitive athletes who recently came from his school is Emilee Ebert. In fact, her parents are directly involved with the school. Her father Brian is a teacher and was Emilee’s basketball coach at Frankfort. Her mother Jennifer is the school librarian.&nbsp;

Emilee Ebert had a standout athletic career at Frankfort. She set the school record with 1,648 career points in basketball. A four-time Kansas Basketball Coaches Association honoree, she earned first team honors in 2018 and 2019. She completed her basketball career as a four-time All-Twin Valley League First Team recipient, and a four-time All-Flint Hills First Team honoree by the&nbsp;Manhattan Mercury.&nbsp;

At the end of her senior season in 2018-19, Emilee was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and garnered top-15 All-Class honors as well as Class 1A All-State First Team honors from multiple sources. Not only was she selected to play in several all-star games, she was selected as most valuable player at two of them.&nbsp;

Ebert was also an outstanding competitor in volleyball and track and field.&nbsp;

Emilee Ebert chose to come to K-State to play basketball for women’s coach Jeff Mittie.&nbsp;&nbsp;By her sophomore season, she was the only Wildcat to start all 27 games. That year, she finished among the Big 12’s best in assists, blocks per game, and assist to turnover ratio. Ebert set the school record for blocks by a guard in a season and was the only player in the Big 12 to appear in the top-15 in assists and blocks.&nbsp;

In her junior year, she played in a career-high 31 games with 24 starts. As this is being written -- partway through her senior season -- she has helped lead the Cats to a 9-2 record and a top 25 ranking. On December 7, she led K-State in scoring in its win against Kansas City, and has been consistently good from the free-throw line.&nbsp;

She is also an excellent example of a student-athlete. Ebert has made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice, plus the Big 12 All-Rookie Academic Team, and the Academic All-Big 12 Team the following year.&nbsp;

Dalinghaus said he wants his students to appreciate academics as well. Frankfort has a K-12 attendance center, so all grades are in the same building. This creates an opportunity for interaction between older and younger students.&nbsp;

Three years ago, Dalinghaus created an initiative called Wildcat Readers. On game days, the athletes take turns reading a book to the elementary school children while wearing their jerseys or dress clothes, depending on the sport.&nbsp;

“It lets the little kids see the older kids as student-athletes, not just athletes,” Dalinghaus said. By modeling reading and encouraging the kids to read, it is a win-win for academics as well as athletics.&nbsp;

This type of interaction works especially well in a school in a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community such as Frankfort, population 723 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

All eyes are on the athlete as she makes her move – not to the basket, but to the book.&nbsp;&nbsp;We commend Dean Dalinghaus for making a difference with this initiative to connect learning and athletics, and we salute Emilee Ebert and all small-town athletes for representing their communities so well.

Dr. Benjamin Rahoy, allergy and immunology, has joined the Mowery Clinic staff.

Rahoy sees both pediatric and adult patients at Mowery Clinic, 737 E. Crawford Street in Salina.

“When I visited Salina, I was excited by all Salina has to offer. The amenities here are that of a larger city while maintaining a small-town feel. My family and I are excited to explore the trails and green space this spring,” said Rahoy.

Rahoy completed his medical degree at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Mo. He completed residency at Creighton University and University of Nebraska Children’s Hospital joint pediatric residency program. He then completed allergy and immunology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Rahoy’s areas of special interest include allergic gastrointestinal disorders, angioedema, anaphylaxis, asthma, seasonal allergies, chronic cough, chronic sinusitis, drug allergy and desensitization, eczema, food allergy, hives, immunodeficiency, insect sting allergy, and many other allergic disorders.

“I passionately strive for the highest quality of life for my patients. For me, that starts by actively listening to them; building that trust component with my patients is important,” said Rahoy.

NEVER FORGOTTEN: December 31, 1932 Salina Fire Department Line of Duty Death: Firefighter Charles Raymond Craig

On New Year’s Eve, in 1932, the alarm sounded for a house fire in the 600 block of State Street. Not long after arriving and during the operation firefighter Ray Craig, a sixteen year veteran of the Department, was overcome and collapsed. It was thought that the physical stress of the firefighting that night had caused Mr. Craig to suffer a heart attack on scene.

Despite the efforts of his fellow firefighters, Ray Craig did not survive. Firefighter Craig was laid to rest at Mount Calvary Cemetery, taken there, not by a hearse, but by the same fire engine that he had ridden to his last alarm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Fire remembers firefighter who died in the line of duty

Salina Regional Endocrinology has earned Education Recognition Program Certification from the American Diabetes Association for its efforts toward providing services that meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES).

The DSMES standards were developed by the American Diabetes Association to assure patients have access to knowledgeable health professionals who can provide comprehensive information about diabetes management.

“Daily self-management skills are absolutely essential for people to effectively navigate the 24/7 challenges of living with diabetes, helping to keep them healthy and prevent or delay the serious complications of diabetes,” said Linda Cann, MSEd, the ADA’s senior vice president of professional services. “We applaud Salina Regional Endocrinology for its commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based education and support for people with diabetes by meeting the National Standards for DSMES and earning the ADA’s ERP recognition.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) 2017 National Diabetes Statistic Report there are 30.3 million people, or 9.4% of the population in the United States, who have diabetes. While an estimated 23.1 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7.2 million people are not aware that they have this disease. Each day, more than 4,110 Americans are diagnosed with diabetes. SRHC endocrinology earns recognition from American Diabetes Association

Low-Income Energy Assistance Program to continue heating homes this winter

MANHATTAN — The temperatures are cold, snow is on the ground and gardeners are stuck inside. Fortunately, starting seeds indoors is a great kick-start to the spring garden.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Obtain your seeds from a reputable source, including garden centers and seed catalogs,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham. “If choosing seeds from a business that does not specialize in plants, pay special attention to the package date to make sure the seed was packaged for the current year. Though most seeds remain viable for about three years, germination decreases as seed ages.”&nbsp;

Upham said there are two pieces of information that need to be known to determine the date to seed transplants: the target date for transplanting outside and the number of weeks needed to grow the transplant.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/horticulture-resource-center/horticulture-newsletter/documents/2022/220104-Newsletter-01.pdf" target="_blank">Jan. 4 K-State Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;includes a table to help gardeners understand these timelines.&nbsp;

“Do not use garden soil to germinate seed as it is too heavy and may contain disease organisms. Use a media made especially for seed germination,” Upham said. &nbsp;

Seeds must be kept moist in order to germinate, Upham added. He recommends using a clear plastic wrap over the container to trap moisture and reduce the amount of watering. Remove the wrap when seedlings emerge. &nbsp;

“All plants require adequate amounts of light once emergence occurs. South facing windows may not provide adequate amounts and so fluorescent or LED fixtures are often used,” Upham said. &nbsp;

Upham suggested suspending fluorescent lights 2-4 inches above the top of the plants. LED lights are more variable so be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Regardless of the type of light used, leave the lights on for 16 hours each day, he said. &nbsp;

“The temperature best for germination is often higher than what we may find in our homes especially since evaporating moisture can cool the germination media,” Upham said. &nbsp;

He recommends moving containers closer to the ceiling or using a heating mat. &nbsp;

“After plants have germinated, they can be grown at a cooler temperature (65-70 degrees during the day and 55-60 degrees at night),” Upham said.&nbsp;

Gardening withdrawals? Start seeds indoors

Respiratory syncytial virus, RSV, COVID-19 and the seasonal flu, these three diseases are being commonly referred to as "the tripledemic." Hospitals and health centers all over the country are experiencing this triple threat, and according to Dr. Rob Freelove, chief medical officer for Salina Regional Health Center, RSV cases in Salina are lessening.&nbsp;

"In the last couple of weeks we have seen less of RSV and more seasonal flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory illness cases," Freelove said.&nbsp;

Freelove also said that the health center's urgent care unit and STAT Care center were seeing more than 120 patients daily. That number is nearly double what the hospital sees in urgent care and STAT Care on a "normal day." The higher patient volume also is creating wait times that can exceed five hours, he said.

"The most important things I can say are things I have said for the past two years, wear a mask if you are going to be in a crowded indoor area, wash your hands, avoid touching your face, and talk with your primary care doctor about getting the COVID-19 vaccine," said Freelove.&nbsp;

As of Dec. 19, the seven-day average COVID-19 case count for Saline County is 14 cases per day. The seven-day average at the end of December last year was also 14 cases per day. Freelove mentioned that he is concerned about the level of cases Saline County might see in January and February.&nbsp;

Freelove implored people in the community to seek out the most appropriate level of care and contact their primary care physician if it is not an emergency.&nbsp;

Their response time was critical to abate severe damages and we were able to get professional clean-up crews were on the scene by about 5:30 a.m. that morning.”Several staff members who were available on Christmas Eve came in to begin cleaning up the mess. Besides wet carpets, some furniture, computers and other equipment had water damage, and ceiling tiles collapsed in several places. According to Nichols, “without the help of our great team including Dale Castillo, director of maintenance, Jamie Palenske, vice president of administrative services, Erica Kruckenberg, vice president of student services, Jennifer Callis, vice president of instruction, and their spouses helping to move furniture and equipment out of the flooded areas, we could not have been able to limit the overall damages.”A dollar estimate on the cost of the damage has not yet been established.Despite the damage, Nichols said the college anticipates the spring semester beginning on Jan. 9 as scheduled but added that students should check their email and the college’s website in case that changes for specific classes.
