Nestled along the hills in northeastern Saline County is a creative oasis known as Harmony Hideaway. It is a place for listening to live music performances in an intimate atmosphere. It is a gathering space for meetings and company retreats. It is a haven for musicians, visual artists, authors and poets, and basically anyone who needs some time away.

Harmony Hideaway is the brainchild of Milt Allen and his partner, Nancy Steele. 

"It's not a bed and breakfast. It's our home that we share is how we look at it," Allen said.

Harmony Hideaway has its roots in the longtime family ties of Allen's and Steele's families.

"We've known the Stephensons (Steele's family) forever. That is the first family that my family ever knew," Allen said.

When Allen's parents, Deane and Cora May Allen, were killed in a car wreck in 2013, Milt and his family stayed with Keno Stephenson (Steele's father) at what is now Harmony Hideaway. Milt Allen said that during that stay, he was walking around the property.

"I came back and I was talking with Nancy Steele, and I said, "I don't want to be morbid, but what's going to happen to this place when Keno passes?'" Milt said. "She goes, 'why do you ask?'"

Milt went on to explain that he thought the home and property would be an ideal location for an artists and writers retreat, with lodging and events. Steele agreed.

When Milt returned to Salina about three years ago to serve as chair of the music department at Kansas Wesleyan University, he ended up staying with Keno Stephenson, who was living on the property by himself.

While Stephenson was out of state for health reasons, a fire at the residence in May of 2020 forced Allen to live in a trailer on the property.

"Eventually, Nancy and I formed a social relationship, as it were, so we were really working hard and wanted to get Keno back home. His health wasn't good, and we just kept running into problem after problem with the contractors and Keno never made it back," Milt said.

It was then the couple decided to create Harmony Hideaway, and in September 2021, they were able to move back into the spacious residence.

Harmony Hideaway is open for a variety of events, including meetings, weddings, office retreats, family gatherings, and lodging. The arts, however, are at the heart of Harmony Hideaway.

For instance, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus Huascar Medina recently did a reading at Harmony Hideaway.

Additionally, house concerts, smaller, more intimate performances are offered regularly at Harmony Hideaway.

"We're recognized as an official house concert venue, which means that any artist who plays here, all the performing rights are protected by BMI and ASCAP," Milt said.

He went on to explain that because Harmony Hideaway is an official house concert venue, the address cannot be included as part of the promotion of the house concerts.

"When we advertise, people have to text us or respond to get a reservation and then we can give our address," he said. "We generally, depending on the artist, charge $20 per person, but it's a 100 percent donation to the artist. It all goes to them."

Milt said that the performers who are brought in for the house concerts are vetted.

"So they're either big award winners or I-know-a-musician-who-recommended-them-who-recommended-them kind of thing," he said.

Those attending are invited to bring a dessert for sharing at intermission.

"It's really cool. There's nothing like this around, because it's an extremely intimate performance. You get to talk to the performers, you get to mingle with them afterward, and the focus is directly on music. So it's really a very neat different kind (of event). And we're actively pulling people from all kinds of different genres."

Harmony Hideaway: A retreat and meeting space, arts haven in NE Saline Co.

After 31 years of service to Salina, Deputy Chief Sean Morton is retiring from the Salina Police Department.

Morton's last day will be March 24, according to a news release issued this morning by the Salina Police Department. A public reception for Morton is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 24 in the training room at the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 251 N. 10th Street.

Morton began his Salina Police Department career in 1991 and served as a patrol officer and a detective in the Criminal Detective Unit and the Drug Task Force. In 1999, he was promoted to lieutenant and served as a patrol supervisor and Training Unit supervisor. Morton was promoted to captain in 2014 and was responsible for the Support Division, which includes the emergency communication center, records, and training units. Later in 2014, he was promoted to deputy chief, the department's second in command.

In 2016, Morton graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy at Quantico, Va., a 10-week course for police administrators.

For seven months after Chief Brad Nelson retired in 2022, Morton served as interim chief. According to the news release, Morton was not interested in applying to be police chief because of his planned retirement this year. Morton scheduled his retirement date so that he could help assist the department in transitioning to new Police Chief C.J. Wise, who thanked Morton for his assistance and guidance.

Deputy Chief Morton retiring from Salina Police Department

A Salina man with multiple active warrants was also arrested on a requested charge of obstruction after an incident in central Salina early Sunday morning.

Officers were called to a residence in the 700 block of Sheridan Street because the mother of Thomas Golde, 35, of Salina, wanted him to leave, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The room in which Golde was staying had an exterior door, and when Golde began to exit the door, officers told him he was under arrest for the active warrants. Golde allegedly walked back into the room, however, an officer was able to keep the door partially open. A struggle ensued and at one point an officer's arm was caught between the door and the doorjamb, Forrester said.

Officers were able to get Golde out of the room and place him under arrest. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. Sunday

Forrester said Golde was arrested on the following warrants and requested charge.

●Two failure to appear warrants from Saline County District Court

●Two failure to appear warrants from Salina Municipal Court

According to information from the city, the following requests were made for special alcohol and drug fund money.

The city noted that the money requested are expected to exceed the funds the city will receive from the state. Because of that the following three funding options based on what is anticipated from the state are being proposed by city staff.

In Option No. 1, commissioners could decide to award funds equally to each agency, capping the distribution amount requested as follows.

In Option No. 2, commissioners could choose to award funds received in direct proportion to the funding requests, capping the distribution to the amount requested as follows.

In Option No. 3, commissioners could approve awarding funds received in direct proportion to the funding requests and distribute any amount over the requested amount in the same proportional amounts.

Other items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Conduct a  public hearing and provide direction regarding a  Tennis Complex Naming Rights Agreement and Agreement Related to funding and construction of the tennis building renovations.

●Consider approving on second reading a proposed ordinance addressing a request filed by 1858 Properties, LLC to vacate the North 100 feet of the ten-foot alley running north-south between Lots 173 and 175 on Seventh Street and Lots 174 and 176 on Santa Fe Avenue in the Original Townsite of Salina. This location is on the west side of Santa Fe Avenue, just south of Mulberry Street. It is the only remaining section of alleyway in that block.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution in support of the City of Salina becoming a POW-MIA City.

●Consider approving a proposed ordinance on first reading that would change the zoning district classification of property at 509 E. Elm Street from I-2 (light industrial) to C-1 (restricted business) to unify the zoning of the CKF campus and to allow addiction treatment housing on property CKF is acquiring from Saint Francis Community Services, Inc.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution adopting an amendment to the Building Kansas, LLC Rural Housing Incentive District Development agreement.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution adopting an amendment to the South View Estates, LLC Rural Housing Incentive District Development agreement.

Special alcohol fund requests, rezoning on City of Salina agenda

Professor Donald B. Scheick was a Professor of History at Indiana State University. I was in his Ancient History class in 1965 when he first took attendance and assigned our textbook and readings. And then he began asking questions. “Mr. Schrock. Who was Abraham?” Answers on this first day of class did not have to be correct, because we had just received our assignment. But correct answers to questions would be critical in all his future class sessions, because he taught completely by asking questions. These were not questions that could easily be answered by memorizing facts. He forced us to consider the motivations for historical actions and the consequences that would have likely occurred if events had gone other directions. Boy did we learn to think!

Prof. Scheick would be awarded the I.S.U. Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award in 1969. The Scheick Teaching of History Award would be awarded in later years.

Prof. Bill Brett, also at I.S.U., was my instructor in a biology majors class a semester later. He did deliver a lecture that he outlined on the board as he spoke. But as the board filled up with information on calcium carbonate in various life systems, he would have to walk back and erase it to continue speaking. While erasing, he always asked a question. I was a field biology kid, and he never called on me. So when he asked for a common example of calcium carbonate, I bowed my head and looked down at my desk.

“Mr. Schrock, what is an example?” he asked.

“The chalk you have in your hand, sir,” I immediately replied.

Prof. Brett halted his erasing, saying: “You did that to me, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did,” I confessed with a smile although not one other person in class knew what we were talking about. A teacher can read students’ eye pupils and distinguish those who understand from those who don’t. By bowing my head, he could not see my eyes and suspected I did not know. We both smiled.

Prof. Rudolph Jander was an entomology professor at the University of Kansas. Now I was completing a doctorate in insect systematics and ecology. Jander was a brilliant entomologist and expert on insect behavior. Every doctoral student knew Prof. Jander’s system of oral testing. He did not use paper-and–pencil exams but scheduled his insect behavior students to come in individually for an oral examination that took less than half an hour.

He would begin by asking his student to explain a concept. If the concept had four major points, and the student began by laying out this organization, Prof. Jander would realize that they had full control of the concept and the student would be cut short after a few sentences. While I never took his class, I did write articles in the campus newspaper about problems in academics. Prof. Jander would venture down to my desk in the insect museum and use his questioning technique on me.

“Have you considered such-and-such factor?” he would ask.

“Yes,” I would reply, “and it is important because of such-and-such consequences. But the campus newspaper limits articles to a limited number of words.”

After 20 minutes or so of discussion Prof. Jander would leave, knowing the extent of what I knew. I also now clearly understood the extent of what I knew. This was not questioning to see if a student had memorized a minimum number of facts. This was questioning that revealed fuller understanding, how concepts related to broader ideas not in the textbook, how to apply the concept to new problems, how to synthesize several concepts to solve a new problem, and how our understanding currently has limits.

This questioning has been a critical part of the U.S. generating new ideas. But with the introduction of No Child Left Behind assessment, most K-12 teaching has become teach-to-the-test memorization and universities are following the trend.

As I lecture at international science teacher training programs, I explain: “We don’t get Nobel Prizes for memorizing the textbook. We get Nobel Prizes for asking new questions that can now be solved.”

I learned that from Professors Scheick, Brett and Jander.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities during 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.

I was in his Ancient History class in 1965 when he first took attendance and assigned our textbook and readings. And then he began asking questions. “Mr. Schrock. Who was Abraham?” Answers on this first day of class did not have to be correct, because we had just received our assignment. But correct answers to questions would be critical in all his future class sessions, because he taught completely by asking questions. These were not questions that could easily be answered by memorizing facts. He forced us to consider the motivations for historical actions and the consequences that would have likely occurred if events had gone other directions. Boy did we learn to think! Prof. Scheick would be awarded the I.S.U. Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award in 1969. The Scheick Teaching of History Award would be awarded in later years. Prof. Bill Brett, also at I.S.U., was my instructor in a biology majors class a semester later. He did deliver a lecture that he outlined on the board as he spoke. But as the board filled up with information on calcium carbonate in various life systems, he would have to walk back and erase it to continue speaking. While erasing, he always asked a question. I was a field biology kid, and he never called on me. So when he asked for a common example of calcium carbonate, I bowed my head and looked down at my desk. “Mr. Schrock, what is an example?” he asked. “The chalk you have in your hand, sir,” I immediately replied. Prof. Brett halted his erasing, saying: “You did that to me, didn’t you?” “Yes, I did,” I confessed with a smile although not one other person in class knew what we were talking about. A teacher can read students’ eye pupils and distinguish those who understand from those who don’t. By bowing my head, he could not see my eyes and suspected I did not know. We both smiled. Prof. Rudolph Jander was an entomology professor at the University of Kansas. Now I was completing a doctorate in insect systematics and ecology. Jander was a brilliant entomologist and expert on insect behavior. Every doctoral student knew Prof. Jander’s system of oral testing. He did not use paper-and–pencil exams but scheduled his insect behavior students to come in individually for an oral examination that took less than half an hour. He would begin by asking his student to explain a concept. If the concept had four major points, and the student began by laying out this organization, Prof. Jander would realize that they had full control of the concept and the student would be cut short after a few sentences. Reality in RGB is the current exhibition in The Gallery at Kansas Wesleyan University.

The exhibition, by Jeroen Nelemans, assistant professor of graphic design at KWU, will be open to the public through April 1. The Gallery is located in KWU's Sams Hall of Fine Arts. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends by appointment.

Reality in RGB explores digital media by showcasing the inner workings behind the screen, according to information from the university. The exhibition "displays the building blocks of an image by exposing the RGB sub-pixels and creating graphic illusions. RGB (red, green and blue) represent the colors used on a digital display screen. Nelemans experiments with multiple layers to create distortion in something that would otherwise be seen as normal. The digital world, with its RGB component, is very much a reality in his art," KWU noted in a news release.

Nelemans, a visual artist who works in a variety of media, has had works exhibited in a variety of institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, the De la Cruz Collection Contemporary Space in Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids.

McPherson County Crime Stoppers seeks tips about motorcycle riders

Monday through Friday, Circle C Paving &amp; Construction of Goddard will seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $491,000 project is part of the city's $5.3 million 2023 street maintenance program.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Wildflowers&nbsp;offer variety and color to a home landscape. In addition to eye appeal, they can survive in soils containing a wide range of chemistry pH and with varying numbers of sunny days, adding variety to garden areas.&nbsp;

To establish a wildflower area, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham recommends using a regional seed blend from Sharp Brothers, Stock Seed or Wildseed Farms.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is better to choose a blend of grasses and&nbsp;wildflowers&nbsp;rather than a single species,” Upham said.&nbsp;

When building a wildflower area, first remove existing vegetation to help&nbsp;wildflowers&nbsp;take root and grow.&nbsp;

●Control perennial weeds by using a product containing glyphosate. 

●Use glyphosate the fall before planting to make soil preparation easier the following spring.

●Before planting, adjust pH and fertilize according to results of a soil test.

●The seedbed should be firm so that the boot heel sinks in no more than ½ inch. The goal is good seed/soil contact. 

●Mix seed with damp sand (4:1 sand/seed) for more uniform coverage with a drop seeder or whirlybird spreader. 

●Rake seed in about ¼ inch deep. It is best if the seedbed is firmed up by using a roller or driving over the area with a riding lawn mower. Don’t mulch. 

●Keep seed moist while the seed is germinating (3-4 times per week, if possible). Slowly back off watering as plants develop.&nbsp;

“Warm-season grasses and most prairie flowers should be seeded between April 1 and May 15,” Upham said. “To control remaining living vegetation, spray with a product containing glyphosate, wait a week and plant.”&nbsp;

Keeping the soil at lease 60 degrees Fahrenheit is also important before planting seeds, Upham said. Soil thermometers are available in most garden centers, hardware stores and auto stores. &nbsp;

“Hand weeding can help but must be done with care to avoid uprooting small prairie flowers. Mow as high as possible to help control fast growing weeds while preserving most of the foliage on the prairie flower,” Upham said.&nbsp;

 </figure>By MADDY ROHR K-State Research and Extension News Service&nbsp;MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Wildflowers&nbsp;offer variety and color to a home landscape. In addition to eye appeal, they can survive in soils containing a wide range of chemistry pH and with varying numbers of sunny days, adding variety to garden areas.&nbsp;To establish a wildflower area, Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham recommends using a regional seed blend from Sharp Brothers, Stock Seed or Wildseed Farms.&nbsp;&nbsp;“It is better to choose a blend of grasses and&nbsp;wildflowers&nbsp;rather than a single species,” Upham said.&nbsp;When building a wildflower area, first remove existing vegetation to help&nbsp;wildflowers&nbsp;take root and grow.&nbsp;Upham recommends: ●Control perennial weeds by using a product containing glyphosate. ●Use glyphosate the fall before planting to make soil preparation easier the following spring.●Before planting, adjust pH and fertilize according to results of a soil test.●The seedbed should be firm so that the boot heel sinks in no more than ½ inch. The goal is good seed/soil contact. ●Mix seed with damp sand (4:1 sand/seed) for more uniform coverage with a drop seeder or whirlybird spreader. ●Rake seed in about ¼ inch deep. It is best if the seedbed is firmed up by using a roller or driving over the area with a riding lawn mower. Don’t mulch. ●Keep seed moist while the seed is germinating (3-4 times per week, if possible). Slowly back off watering as plants develop.&nbsp;“Warm-season grasses and most prairie flowers should be seeded between April 1 and May 15,” Upham said. “To control remaining living vegetation, spray with a product containing glyphosate, wait a week and plant.”&nbsp;Keeping the soil at lease 60 degrees Fahrenheit is also important before planting seeds, Upham said. Soil thermometers are available in most garden centers, hardware stores and auto stores. &nbsp;“Hand weeding can help but must be done with care to avoid uprooting small prairie flowers. Wildflowers bring bursts of color to home landscapes 

In her return to Salina's Christ Cathedral, the Very Reverend Shay Craig is making history.

On April 1, Craig will be the first woman to be installed as the Dean (head clergy) in the 117-year history of the second-largest congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas. She returns to Christ Cathedral, where she served from 2018-2020 before her appointment as vicar of St. Michael's and St. Andrew's Episcopal churches in Hays. Craig will become the 19th Dean of Christ Cathedral, which was founded in 1906, according to information from the cathedral.

The public installation is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 1 at the cathedral, 138 S. Eighth Street. A reception will immediately follow in the cathedral's parish hall. Reservations for the event are recommended. For additional information, contact the cathedral office at 785-827-4440.

The installation service will be comprised of liturgies. The first will be the installation of Craig as the cathedral's new Dean, as charged by the Right Reverend Mark Cowell, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas. At that time, gifts symbolizing Craig’s duties of office will be presented. The second part of the service will be a Chrism Mass, an annual time of reaffirmation for all clergy in the diocese, many of whom will be present, the information from the cathedral noted.

Diocese dignitaries and visiting clergy from more than five states, as well as representatives of numerous Salina churches are expected to attend the service.

Joining Craig on the cathedral staff will be the Reverend Catherine Cox as curate, the Reverend Basil Price as assisting priest, music staff Rebecca Copley and Nancy Bauer, parish administrator Crissy Cook, and facilities manager Don Grunden.

A great-granddaughter of the Kansas prairie, Craig’s family established The Young Brothers Cattle Company and has owned Bluff Creek Ranch in Clark County for more than 100 years. She was born in Omaha and grew up in California, studying at a Quaker boarding school, the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Seabury/Bexley Seminary.

She worked in development and marketing, then as a full-time mom, before changing careers. Craig’s sister, Minka Sprague, served as an Episcopal priest and her aunt, Judy Craig, was a bishop in the United Methodist Church. Following seminary and before coming to Kansas, Shay Craig served as the development officer for the Diocese of Chicago, working with congregations across northern Illinois to increase their vitality and engagement.

A mother of four grown children, one of whom lives in Salina, Craig is married to John Houston, an assistant general counsel for the Kansas Office of Judicial Administration. They plan to live in rural Saline County with their three dogs and numerous cats.

Assembly includes the right to gather publicly for rallies, marches and protests. Demonstrations play a key role in generating public interest in and raising awareness about activists’ causes.

<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/the-first-amendment/" target="_blank">The First Amendment</a>, though, also protects much more than walking together, carrying signs and speaking to crowds.

It also includes the right to meet, organize and plan with others, sometimes referred to as freedom of association.

Freedom of assembly is explicitly guaranteed in the First Amendment and protects the right of people to gather to speak their minds. But protests and other activities under the First Amendment don’t just happen. That’s why, even though it is not specifically mentioned in the First Amendment, the Supreme Court has identified a freedom of association that allows people to create groups and otherwise organize together.

Civil rights movement marchers organized for equality

During the civil rights movement, lunch counter protests, sit-ins and boycotts spurred moves toward equal access for Black Americans to restaurants, schools and public transportation.

The August 1963&nbsp;<a href="https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/march-washington-jobs-and-freedom" target="_blank">March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom</a>, one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in U.S. history, shaped civil rights legislation under consideration and later passed by Congress.

The march from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965 was part of a campaign to register Black voters in Alabama. After the March was twice shut down, once violently by state troopers on&nbsp;<a href="https://newseumed.org/tools/historical-event/bloody-sunday-march" target="_blank">“Bloody Sunday,”</a>&nbsp;President Lyndon B. Johnson&nbsp;called on Congress to pass federal voting rights legislation, which it did later that year.

Behind the scenes of these highly publicized protests, civil rights organizers were also fighting for freedom of association. NAACP chapters in Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas faced shutdown after state officials tried to get the groups to hand over their membership lists, which would have placed members in danger. The Alabama NAACP and the Arkansas NAACP leader&nbsp;Daisy Bates&nbsp;went to court. A series of Supreme Court decisions took state law enforcement and lawmakers to task for limiting the right to organize privately. These decisions protected civil rights organizing.

More than one million people participated across the nation — one of the largest protests in U.S. history.Behind the scenes of this now annual march is a youth-led movement, powered by freedom of association, to change gun policies and encourage lawmakers to address issues that contribute to violence.The students first met with Florida state lawmakers&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2018/02/21/invoking-memory-their-lost-classmates-stoneman-douglas-high-school-students-urge-legislators-act-gun/360854002/" target="_blank">days after the shooting</a>&nbsp;to advocate for legislative action.Later, they planned a nationwide tour to register young voters, modeled in part on the civil rights movement’s 1964 Freedom Summer voter registration campaign.According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2018/08/02/after-parkland-states-pass-50-new-gun-control-laws" target="_blank">Pew Charitable Trusts</a>&nbsp;and the Giffords Law Center, in the six months following the shooting, 50 new laws to regulate guns were passed in 25 states, spurred in part by the students’ activism.The March for Our Lives organization continues to petition at the state and national levels for gun control legislation and to organize young people to vote for candidates who share their views.Behind the largest protests and most historic marches, the ability to assemble and associate provides movements with the power to influence social and policy change. Strength in numbers can make petitions more powerful and effective in generating government action.The private expressions of association don’t get televised like marches do, but they’re both ways to exercise important First Amendment freedoms.
