The Stiefel Theatre in downtown Salina has announced that the Ireland with Michael show is moving to Dec. 15.

Now, Ireland with Michael - A Christmas Celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. Dec. 15. All tickets purchased for the April 1 show will automatically transfer to the new date.

The show features Michael Londra, an Emmy® award-nominated singer and the voice of Riverdance on Broadway.

Stiefel Theatre: Ireland with Michael show moves to Dec. 15

Salina Police Department promotes Gawith to sergeant

TOPEKA – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in January. This is unchanged from 2.9% in December and an increase from 2.5% in January 2022.

The jobless rates across central Kansas ticked up in, with Saline County rising from 2.3 percent in December to 2.8 percent in January. Dickinson County's 3 percent unemployment rate was still the highest in the area.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 8,500 from December. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 4,400 over the month, while government increased by 4,100.

“Annual estimates indicate that Kansas employers added 38,300 private sector jobs in 2022, a growth rate of 3.4%,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “This strong growth continued in January 2023, with preliminary estimates for the private sector increasing by 4,400 jobs over the month.”

Since January 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 48,900. This change is due to an increase of 47,100 private sector jobs and an increase of 1,800 government jobs.

Jobless rate up slightly in Saline County, across the region

ELLSWORTH–A growing number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) want more personalized services in a smaller setting. Recent data shows 24/7 shared living services often improve people’s physical health, bring greater mental and emotional wellbeing, offer more enriching relationships and give them more choices for where they live and with whom.

All of these happen through the Ellsworth-based nonprofit <a href="https://www.mosaicinfo.org/locations/kansas/north-central-ks/">Mosaic in North Central Kansa</a>s with their shared living support service, called Mosaic at Home, one of its most popular and growing support service lines.

“Through this service, the person with IDD shares a home with a Mosaic independent host home provider—also called a contractor—who helps the person become an active member of the household and the greater community," said Mosaic in North Central Kansas Executive Director Mike Jones.

To meet the growing desire for shared living services, Jones says, Mosaic is actively expanding Mosaic at Home—which has been offered for more than 30 years in some markets—in Kansas and across the nonprofit’s 13-state network.

Locally, Teresa Perez has served 44-year-old Debbie Palmer in her home since 2017. They had met each other at high school when Perez was a functional learning educator and Palmer was a 16-year-old student. It was then when Perez started working with her not only in, but outside of, the classroom.

“When I met Debbie’s mom, Marilyn, we really clicked. You could really see the love she had for Debbie–you could literally feel she wanted the best for her–and she was trying so hard to ensure Debbie would be taken care of for the rest of her life,” Perez said. “As a mother of three, that went straight to my heart.”

“At one point during our relationship, Marilyn asked me to be Debbie’s guardian,” Perez said. “I told her ‘as long as you have a home and a family, I don’t want to do that.’ But I also promised her Debbie would always have a home.”

Sadly, Palmer’s mom passed soon thereafter in 2002, leaving her elderly father to take care of her. As he grew older, it became an impossible task. He wanted his daughter to be with Perez.

“It was time. We decided as a family to bring Debbie home, and because of her previous, frequent visits, my husband Abel and our kids already considered her part of our family,” said Perez. “Abel said it was the right thing to do because I loved her, and my kids pleaded, ‘Mom, Debbie needs to be with us.’”

According to Perez, Palmer has gone through a remarkable transformation since Perez has shared her home with her.

“She didn't like to be around large groups of people, and now she just loves it when our kids and grandkids come to visit all at once. She especially loves being at the packed dinner table with all the lively conversation,” Perez said.

Perez added although Palmer was considered to be nonverbal, she’s now forming some words. “We were driving and the radio was on. When we came to a stoplight, Debbie put her hands on her heart and said, ‘Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy on me.’ Then a song with those lyrics started to play, and I realized she knew the song just by its intro! To me, it was a miracle she was able to say that many words in a row.”

Palmer has also learned how to shop at the grocery store, where before, she didn’t like going. “I show her cards with pictures of grocery items while forming their names slowly, and that helps her pick them out. Sometimes, when we get to the check-out, I’ll notice a few extra items in our cart, and I’ll amusingly say to myself, ‘mmm, I wonder how that got in there?’ But it makes me happy, because she’s now expressing not only her needs, but her wants.

“While Mosaic pays me to be a home provider for someone with disabilities, I am not in this for the money–and anyone thinking of becoming a shared home provider should definitely not be in it for the money. She’s done so much for my kids and grandkids by teaching them tolerance and inclusiveness. Debbie gives me purpose knowing I am contributing to someone else’s quality of life. She gives me a reason to not focus on what I couldn’t do, but to focus on what I can.”

Mosaic in North Central Kansas offers increased personalized support for people with IDD

WICHITA — A well-known face at Salina Presbyterian Manor has a new role with parent company PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®). The Department of Giving has named Jenni Jones as the director of giving, a newly created role focused on building relationships with donors and volunteers at Salina Presbyterian Manor, Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, and Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

“Jenni’s time will be focused on building internal and external relationships to advance PMMA’s mission,” said Sarah Oenning, vice president, Department of Giving. “Our goal with the position is to increase donor and volunteer engagement to have a meaningful and long-term impact on fundraising strategies.”

Jones has been a part of the PMMA family since 2016 when she was hired as director of sales and marketing at Salina Presbyterian Manor before later becoming regional director of marketing and sales. In this new position, Jones will get a chance to play an active part in helping the organization achieve its mission and better serve the people she has gotten to know and love.

“I have always shared in PMMA’s mission to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values and I have seen over the last six years what giving can do to bless our residents and staff,” said Jones. “I wanted to be a part of the team that shares our mission to the communities through love, faith, charity and other Christian principles.”

Jones was born and raised in the Salina area and has a broad network of community members, friends and family in Dodge City and Clay Center as well. Her passion for seniors began when she would help take care of her own grandmother who lived in an assisted living community. It instilled in her a desire to spread love while extending a helping hand.

“I love helping people, especially the elders in our community. They have paved the way for me and I’m trying to give back,” said Jones.

Persons with sensory needs now can have a more enjoyable experience at Rolling Hills Zoo.

The zoo announced Thursday that it is now Sensory Inclusive Certified via KultureCity, and is one of only five such certified locations in Kansas.

"One in six individuals has a sensory need or an invisible disability; including those with PTSD, autism, dementia and stroke, just to name a few. Sensory needs are a common medical condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. In fact, common sounds, lights, crowds, and even certain smells, might not only be overwhelming but also physically painful," the zoo noted in a news release.

In addition to the zoo being certified, all zoo employees have Sensory Inclusive Certification.

When persons with sensory needs arrive at the zoo, 625 N. Hedville Road, they can check out KultureCity sensory bags for free. The bags are created for both adults and children and include items that can help lessen sensory overload. Fidget toys and noise-canceling headphones are among the items in the sensory bags.

Additionally, signage has been placed throughout the zoo and museum that not only designates quiet areas, but also alerts guests to areas where they may experience loud noises or strong smells. The zoo also is creating a quiet room below Safari Station for zoo guests to use.

KultureCity was founded in 2013 by Julian Maha and his wife, Dr. Michele Kong, after Maha witnessed his son, who has autism, experiencing a “meltdown” in a barber shop when a stranger yelled at and grabbed him, the zoo noted.  Maha said after that day he was inspired to try to make public spaces more accessible for those struggling with sensory issues and cofounded KultureCity, which has now established more than 900 sensory-inclusive spaces in more than five countries.

Lace up your bowling shoes and get together with friends, family and/or co-workers to have fun raising money and bowling, in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina mentoring programs.

Teams of six bowlers compete to raise the most money and celebrate their efforts on April 1 during two hours of bowling fun at The Alley of Salina! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina Bowl for Kids' Sake is back!

A Salina man was arrested early Friday morning on requested charges that included attempted aggravated burglary and stalking.

A 30-year-old Salina woman reported at approximately 2:33 a.m. Friday that Brandon Letourneau, 28, of Salina, was attempting to force his way into her residence in the 900 block of Park Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Letourneau allegedly was striking the front door of the residence hard enough to leave dents in the door.

Forrester said the woman was home with three children and was able to identify Letourneau from her window.

Letourneau fled the scene before officers arrived, however, they found him hiding in the 200 block of N. College Avenue and arrested him on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Individuals, churches, and organizations came through in a big way for the 2023 Salina Souper Bowl of Hope. 

According to organizers, 67,000 cans of soup were collected in January and February. That's 10,000 cans more than the 2023 goal!

The annual collection distributes the soup to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Ashby House, and DVACK.

Individuals and groups had multiple ways to give. Soup collection sites were set up at local Dillons stores on several weekends during the collection period. That effort brought in 26,000 cans of soup.

Additional cans of soup, as well as monetary donations used to purchase cans of soup came in after, resulting in another 41,000 cans of soup being available for distribution.

And if this year is like previous years, soup will continue to come in, organizers said.

Why 57,000? The goal was set at 57,000 to coincide with Super Bowl 57, as the date of the Super Bowl is the official end of the collection period.

On March 5, officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the former CD Tradepost, 2342 Planet Avenue, in regard to damage to property. 

It was reported a window was damaged and there was an audible alarm coming from the business. Officers arrived and found the store was vacant, but the large front window was broken.

As officers were searching the area, another window was found damaged at Copy Co., 2346 Planet Avenue. The suspect(s) were not able to gain entry into the business. It was learned the damages occurred sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Damages to both businesses are estimated to be $5,000.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about damage to windows

How do you handle a situation where someone needs financial help, but has misspent money you’ve given them in the past? My wife and I have been trying to help a young man we recently met. He told us he was trying to get his life together after a divorce and job loss, and he just needed a little money for groceries and household items. He has asked us a couple of times since for more money, but we discovered he was buying alcohol with most of the cash we gave him. We learned from friends what he said about losing his job and being divorced was true, but we are unsure what to do next.

This young man’s problem sounds as much like a mismanagement of money as it is a lack of money. He seems to have an issue with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/overcoming-financial-infidelity" target="_blank">lying</a>, and possibly an addiction problem, too.

I’ve never been against helping people who have good hearts and just need a break. But if someone is bold enough to ask for your money, you have every right to attach requirements to the help you give—especially when it’s for their own good. If he really needs food or household things, you can just buy them for him. At least that way, you’d know you were providing necessities.&nbsp;

But in many cases, truly helping someone is a lot more work than just giving them money. Sometimes, you have to get down in their mess, get real with them and walk with them. If you haven’t been put off by what has already happened, and you still really want to help, I’d suggest getting to know this young man and his situation a little better. Be straight with him, and let him know you’ve learned he hasn’t been honest with you in the past. Hopefully, as a result he’ll apologize and start making better choices. If he does, you might even offer to arrange for him to talk to a good pastor or counselor.

This whole situation is much bigger than helping someone with a little cash. This guy needs someone who cares enough to help him get his life back together.

9th Judicial District Nominating Commission interviews April 6

WICHITA – Springing forward can mean falling back into a bad driving habit – drowsy driving. The arrival of Daylight Saving Time this weekend means one less hour of sleep, a darker morning commute, and the potential for more sleepy drivers on the road.

AAA is reminding drivers to adjust their sleeping habits along with their clocks, to stay alert behind the wheel and to look out for pedestrians, especially children who will be on their way to school and may be hard to see.

“When the time changes, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment and drivers need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday.”

However, 19% admitted to driving when they were so tired they had a hard time keeping their eyes open at some point in the past month.

“Knowing the warning signs of drowsiness can help drivers avoid dozing off behind the wheel,” said Steward. “Symptoms include having trouble keeping your eyes open, drifting from your lane and not remembering the last few miles driven.”

Drivers however should not rely on their bodies to provide warning signs for drowsiness and should instead prioritize getting at least seven hours of sleep before hitting the road.

To avoid drowsy driving, AAA recommends that drivers:&nbsp;&nbsp;

●Travel at times of the day when they are normally awake

●Prioritize sleep, getting at least seven hours a night

●Avoid medications that cause drowsiness or other impairment

●Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles

●Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving

●Do not underestimate the power of a quick nap. Pulling into a rest stop and taking a quick catnap―at least 20 minutes and no more than 30 minutes of sleep―can help to keep you alert on the roads

School safety Losing an hour over the weekend may make drivers feel foggy for the Monday morning commute.&nbsp;The morning commute for several weeks to come will be much darker than what drivers have been used to in the last few weeks.&nbsp;It’s important for drivers to be alert and remember that children will be on their way to school and may be hard to see. ●Slow Down.&nbsp;Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed than a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

●Stay Alert.&nbsp;Drivers should always avoid distractions while driving, but it’s particularly important in school zones and residential neighborhoods.

●Headlights.&nbsp;Turn on the vehicle’s daytime running lights or headlights—even during the day—so children and other drivers can see you more easily. But, don’t forget to turn them off when you reach your destination to maintain your battery life.

●While walking, pocket the cell phone and avoid listening to music/audio player at a volume that prohibits you from hearing approaching danger.

 ●Cross at intersections or crosswalks - not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.&nbsp;Do not jaywalk.

●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.

●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at dawn, dusk and night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

 ●Allow extra time and distance for a vehicle to stop in inclement weather.

●Do not let umbrellas or jacket hoods block your view of approaching traffic.

Slow down, move over Tired drivers are not as focused and while there is more daylight, they are still at risk of being distracted. First responders, construction workers and people stranded with a breakdown on the side of the road are vulnerable to drivers who are not paying attention and are at a greater risk of being hit. It's not just tow providers and other emergency responders being killed on the side of the road. Since 2015, over 1,600 people have been struck and killed while outside of a disabled vehicle.

To protect roadside workers, drivers stranded with a breakdown, and others, AAA offers these tips:

●Remain alert, avoid distractions and focus on the task of driving.

●Keep an eye out for situations where emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility service vehicles or disabled vehicles are stopped on the side of the road.

When you see these situations, slow down and if possible move one lane over and away from the people and vehicles stopped at the side of the road.

But, don’t forget to turn them off when you reach your destination to maintain your battery life.Tips for pedestrians:●While walking, pocket the cell phone and avoid listening to music/audio player at a volume that prohibits you from hearing approaching danger. ●Cross at intersections or crosswalks - not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.&nbsp;Do not jaywalk.●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at dawn, dusk and night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark. ●Allow extra time and distance for a vehicle to stop in inclement weather.●Do not let umbrellas or jacket hoods block your view of approaching traffic.Slow down, move over Tired drivers are not as focused and while there is more daylight, they are still at risk of being distracted. First responders, construction workers and people stranded with a breakdown on the side of the road are vulnerable to drivers who are not paying attention and are at a greater risk of being hit. It's not just tow providers and other emergency responders being killed on the side of the road. The Salina Police Department Thursday afternoon released additional information regarding the alleged stabbing incident in front of Walmart late Wednesday morning.

According to the media release, the 26-year-old woman who suffered a wound to her back underwent surgery and is recuperating. It is likely that she will make a full recovery, the department noted.

Additionally, the department reported that an arrest affidavit was submitted to the Saline County Attorney requesting the following charges for Kenneth Harold Smith, 71, of Salina.

●Aggravated weapons violation by a convicted felon

Smith is being held on no bond in the Saline County Jail.

The Salina Police Department asks that anyone with additional information about the case contact the Detective Division of the Salina Police Department at 785-826-7210.

A 71-year-old Salina man was arrested after an alleged stabbing in front of a south Salina retail store late Wednesday morning.

At approximately 11:46 a.m. Wednesday, the law enforcement dispatch center received a call that someone had been stabbed in front of Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year-old woman who suffered a stab wound to her back, according to a news release issued by the Salina Police Department this afternoon. The woman was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. No condition information was available.

"Officers were directed to a man who was still at the scene and he was identified as the person who committed the stabbing," the news release noted.

The man, identified as Kenneth Harold Smith, 71, of Salina, was taken into custody.
