The NHL announced that players would not be able to participate in the Beijing Olympics; the league would spend the previously scheduled Olympic break making up games postponed because of COVID-19 protocols.

Today in History - December 22

SALINE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Mazda Tribute driven by Sawyer B.&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire, 16, Lindsborg, was southbound on Interstate 135 at the Lindsborg exit. 

The SUV entered the west ditch, overturned and came to rest on its top.

A passenger, identified as 21-year-old Grant L.&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire, of Lindsborg, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Christian's Funeral Home. EMS transported Sawyer&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire to Salina Regional Health Center. They were both properly restrained, according to the KHP.

KHP Troop C's Harkrader retires

The Salvation Army, located at 1137 N. Santa Fe, will be open during regular hours today. 

If you need somewhere warm to stay the night for you or your family, the Salvation Army will accept people until 10 p.m. For security reasons, doors will close at 10 p.m. and re-open at 7 a.m. on Thursday. Lunch and dinner will be served as usual.

Salina Grace, located at 304 W. Grand Ave., operates a Winter-Only Overnight Emergency Shelter.

This will be a REFERRAL ONLY night-by-night shelter, no programs, just a warm place to sleep at night during the winter.

Shelter Guests MUST check in between 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. only, unless escorted by a local law enforcement officer. All guests will leave in the morning and need to take all their belongings with them.

REFERRALS Referral can happen by phone or in person either at Salina Rescue Mission or Ashby House.

For men call the Salina Rescue Mission 823-2610 and ask for a shelter supervisor. For women and families, call Ashby House 826-4935.

PLEASE NOTE: Male registered sex or violent offenders will NOT be allowed check in at Salina Grace, they should be referred to the Salina Rescue Mission.

Women registered offenders will be referred on a case-by-case basis by Ashby House.

Persons on corrections outside of Saline County will not be permitted to stay at Salina Grace.

Those intoxicated above .170 will not be allowed to stay at Salina Grace, will be referred to CKF Addiction Treatment detox unit if space is available.

For many of us, the holiday season is a time for cheerful giving. But charity scammers ruin the mood by trying to cash in on your good will. If you’re supporting a charitable cause this winter, make a donation plan that includes spotting and avoiding scams.

Charitable giving goes up near the end of the year and scammers know it. Your year-end giving has the best chance of reaching the organizations you want to reach — and not scammers — when you:

●Check out a charity before you give.&nbsp;Most organizations use heart-warming messages to inspire you to give. But scammers might do that too. you&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/donating-through-crowdfunding-social-media-fundraising-platforms">donate through an online platform</a>,&nbsp;the platform or another organization may keep part of the money as a fee before sending the rest to your chosen charity. That information should be clear and easy to find on the platform’s website. If it’s not, consider donating directly to the charity instead.

●Don’t rush.&nbsp;Scammers pressure you to give right away. They don’t want you to have time to research their claims or think it through. Honest charities always need your donations — but they won’t rush you into donating immediately.

●Pay by credit card. It’s your safest bet.&nbsp;Scammers often ask you to wire money through companies like Western Union and Money Gram or buy gift cards. Or they might insist that you pay by cryptocurrency. If someone says it’s the&nbsp;only&nbsp;way for you to donate, you know it’s a scam.

City, county, library closing in observance of Christmas

A Salina man was arrested Monday afternoon after he allegedly threatened two women and a dog.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 600 block of Charles Street at noon on Monday for the report of a disturbance. They made contact with a 55-year-old woman who said Joseph Johnson, 35, of Salina, called her at work and told her he was inside her residence, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Johnson was not supposed to be in the residence.

The woman returned home and she and a 45-year-old female neighbor entered the residence, where they found Johnson armed with a hammer and allegedly threatening to kill the woman's dog, Forrester said.

A physical altercation ensued. Johnson allegedly shoved both women to the ground and threatened them, Forrester said. When officers arrived, both women had exited the residence.

The woman who lives in the residence went back inside to get her dog and found Johnson armed with both a hammer and a crowbar, Forrester said. Johnson allegedly came at the woman, but she was able to escape from the house.

While in the residence, Johnson allegedly broke a four-foot-by-three-foot window and put two circular indentations in a kitchen countertop. Total damage was estimated at $650.

When officers entered the residence, they found Johnson in the kitchen with the hammer, Forrester said. Officers had to tase and pepper spray Johnson in order to take him into custody, he added.

Johnson was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

●Three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer

UPDATE: NWS updates winter storm forecast; dangerous wind chills, snow remain

Three northeast Saline County residents were arrested and five children were removed from their custody after an alleged incident that was reported on Tuesday.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that sheriff's office personnel responded Tuesday after a trusted adult reported an incident that allegedly happened on Sunday at a residence in the 2600 block of E. Shipton Road.

"Originally, the deputy went out and took the call, and realized it was going to be something other than just a simple battery case, so he got our investigators involved with that," Melander said.

Saline County Sheriff's Investigator Kody Trower said the incident was originally reported to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department, which turned it over to Saline County because the location of the alleged incident was within Saline County.

Trower said one of the five children reported the alleged incident to a trusted adult on Tuesday. After hearing the allegations from the child, sheriff's office personnel were required to take into protective custody the other four children at the residence. All of the children are now in the custody of other family members, he said.

As a result of the investigation into the allegations, three adults were arrested on the following requested charges, according to Melander and Trower.

Falon R. McHone, 40, of the residence in rural Saline County

Lindsey N. Whisenhunt, 26, of the residence in rural Saline County

Melander said the investigation was ongoing.

Three adults arrested; five children removed from their custody

A Saline County woman was injured in a two-vehicle wreck west of Salina that left her trapped in her vehicle Tuesday evening.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that Steven Moss, 37, of Salina, was eastbound on State Street just west of N. Burma Road when his 2009 Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line and struck almost head on a westbound 1995 Honda Civic driven by Jolissa Crook, 40, of rural Saline County. 

The wreck occurred at approximately 6:43 p.m. Tuesday.

Crook was trapped in her vehicle and had to be removed. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Melander said. Moss refused treatment at the scene, he added.

Melander said Moss was cited for improper driving on laned roadways and for not wearing a seatbelt.

Fifth Street.

Tournament registration and the t-shirt design party will begin at 9 a.m. Participants in grades 6-8 will compete in one group, and grades 9-12 will compete in a separate group. Participants must be checked in by noon and the tournament will end at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;

If you aren't interested in playing dodgeball or trying out your creative skills in the t-shirt decorating contest, but still want to donate to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, there will be a drive-through drop-off area for food donations.

Teams will consist of up to eight people with a minimum of six players and at least two females per team. The tournament is double elimination. Salina Area Young Life, January youth community dodgeball tournament 

By JOE NEWLAND Kansas Farm Bureau president When I was elected president of Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) earlier this month, it was an incredible honor and a very humbling experience. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to adequately express my gratitude for those who supported my candidacy, but I’m excited to work with our members to advance KFB’s mission to strengthen agriculture through advocacy, education and service. I have considered myself a farmer ever since my first ride on the combine, which was long before I was able to operate one by myself. From that formative experience, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life caring for the land, tending crops and livestock and raising my family. About the time I was able to safely operate equipment on my own, I discovered FFA. It helped me better understand the world of agriculture extends far beyond the farm gate. My FFA adviser helped me discover my lifelong passion of promoting agriculture, both as a business and as a way of life. After marrying my wife, Dana, I became a Farm Bureau member for the first time because I had to have insurance. I quickly learned the value of a membership went well beyond protecting our home, cars and farm. We thought we were buying protection from financial loss, but we had actually purchased comprehensive coverage securing our way of life. As I began seeking out ways to advocate for agriculture, the Wilson County Farm Bureau stood out as a place where I could really make an impact for the industry and my community. My work there gave me the confidence to expand my leadership through civic groups, the local school board, a bank board, Kansas Farm Bureau committees and eventually representing southeast Kansas on KFB’s board of directors before serving in the Kansas House. The support of my wife and our four children has been instrumental in allowing me to spend time away from the farm pursuing these opportunities. I have no doubt they will continue to support and counsel me as I take on this new endeavor. I use “we” to acknowledge all the help I’ve received from friends and family that’s helped me succeed over the years. A big difference now is “we” extends to every border of Kansas. I am no longer a member of a local board, a district board or the Kansas House, all of which represented a part of the whole. I’m now tasked with helping ensure farms and ranches across the state – from Lenexa to Liberal and Bird City to Baxter Springs – prosper. The challenges you face on the farm, the issues you see in your schools and the obstacles you notice in your community aren’t just yours, they’re mine too. We must view these as opportunities rather than barriers.  </figure>By JOE NEWLAND Kansas Farm Bureau president When I was elected president of Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) earlier this month, it was an incredible honor and a very humbling experience. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to adequately express my gratitude for those who supported my candidacy, but I’m excited to work with our members to advance KFB’s mission to strengthen agriculture through advocacy, education and service. I have considered myself a farmer ever since my first ride on the combine, which was long before I was able to operate one by myself. From that formative experience, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life caring for the land, tending crops and livestock and raising my family. About the time I was able to safely operate equipment on my own, I discovered FFA. It helped me better understand the world of agriculture extends far beyond the farm gate. My FFA adviser helped me discover my lifelong passion of promoting agriculture, both as a business and as a way of life. After marrying my wife, Dana, I became a Farm Bureau member for the first time because I had to have insurance. I quickly learned the value of a membership went well beyond protecting our home, cars and farm. We thought we were buying protection from financial loss, but we had actually purchased comprehensive coverage securing our way of life. As I began seeking out ways to advocate for agriculture, the Wilson County Farm Bureau stood out as a place where I could really make an impact for the industry and my community. My work there gave me the confidence to expand my leadership through civic groups, the local school board, a bank board, Kansas Farm Bureau committees and eventually representing southeast Kansas on KFB’s board of directors before serving in the Kansas House. The support of my wife and our four children has been instrumental in allowing me to spend time away from the farm pursuing these opportunities. I have no doubt they will continue to support and counsel me as I take on this new endeavor. I use “we” to acknowledge all the help I’ve received from friends and family that’s helped me succeed over the years. A big difference now is “we” extends to every border of Kansas. I am no longer a member of a local board, a district board or the Kansas House, all of which represented a part of the whole. I’m now tasked with helping ensure farms and ranches across the state – from Lenexa to Liberal and Bird City to Baxter Springs – prosper. The challenges you face on the farm, the issues you see in your schools and the obstacles you notice in your community aren’t just yours, they’re mine too. We must view these as opportunities rather than barriers. Today in History - December 21

With weather forecasts for winter conditions possible late Wednesday evening (December 21) and into Thursday (December 22), the City of Salina is making preparations to pre-treat roadways with salt and Magnesium Chloride brine (MgCl2), treat initial accumulations of snow with salt and MgCl2, and if necessary plow roadways.

Salt spreaders will be loaded Wednesday and ready to treat roadways either late Wednesday evening or early Thursday as roadway conditions merit. Crews are divided into day and night shifts to allow continuous 24-hour operations.

If snow accumulations are greater than 1.5” in depth, all arterial and collector streets will be plowed. If accumulations exceed 2” in depth, snow will be plowed in residential areas once arterial and collector streets have been plowed. High winds and extreme wind chill temperatures are expected which may prolong the street clearing operations.

The public is asked to minimize travel during snow storms as much as possible. If travel is necessary, please be sure to clear your vehicle’s windshield and windows to improve visibility and your roof to reduce the amount of blowing snow for other motorists. Please allow extra stopping distance at intersections or between vehicles on the roadway.

The public is asked to also allow ample space when approaching snow removal equipment from behind, as the equipment will be distributing salt, which may cause limited visibility as snow is being removed from the roadway. Driving too closely to snow removal equipment could also present additional challenges and safety concerns for operators and other motorists.

Gridiron Glory: Congratulations Richard Peppers!

A local woman was slightly injured in a two-vehicle wreck Monday afternoon in southwest Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Lisa Gormley, 62, of Salina, was driving southwest on Royal Drive in a 2004 Suzuki XL7 when she failed to yield the right-of-way at Derby Street and struck a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup driven by a 16-year-old Salina boy.

After the collision, the Suzuki went southbound over a curb and struck a utility trailer and two chainlink fences before coming to a stop.

Gormley suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital, Forrester said. A 27-year-old female passenger in the Suzuki was not injured. No injuries were reported for the teen pickup driver.

The Suzuki sustained major front-end damage and the Ranger sustained front and driver-side damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Gormley was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way at an intersection, Forrester said.

MANHATTAN — The winter solstice begins this week, plus a weather forecast including snow and dangerous wind chills means winter is officially here. A Kansas State University veterinarian says now is the time to bring some pets inside.&nbsp;

"It is time to consider bringing your cat or dog inside for warmth," said Susan Nelson,&nbsp;clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>.&nbsp;"Pets that are very young or old, and those not acclimated to the colder weather, should be brought in during the colder temperatures."&nbsp;

Nelson advises dogs with heavy coats could get too warm in the house, so keeping them in a slightly cooler room or the garage can prevent them from getting too uncomfortable. Short trips inside the house before a long period of cold can give pets a chance to become accustomed to indoor temperatures.&nbsp;

If your pet gets nervous or panics while inside, Nelson said a carrier or crate may help to ease the transition. Speak to your veterinarian about calming medication if the pet's anxiety is severe.&nbsp;

Ensure pets have easy access to food and water bowls and that they know where the bowls are located.&nbsp;If your pet is not housebroken, Nelson recommends keeping them on floors that are easily cleaned.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Homes do have their own environmental threats to pets that are different from those found outdoors.&nbsp;

Indoor plants, such as lilies, dieffenbachia and philodendron, can be toxic to pets," Nelson said. "Before bringing pets inside, take an inventory of what plants you have and find out if they are poisonous, then move them to an inaccessible place."&nbsp;

Nelson listed some additional common items found in the home that can also be harmful to our furry friends:&nbsp;

With proper care and preparation, pets can be comfortable outside during cold weather, Nelson said.&nbsp;

"Outdoor shelters should not be too big in order to prevent loss of heat to dead space," Nelson said. "The door should face the south or west to reduce wind gusts. Use clean straw or hay for bedding, as blankets tend to get trampled easily and lose their insulating effect. If your pet will allow it, hanging a blanket over the door or using a pet flap will keep the wind out."&nbsp;

According to Nelson, cats also benefit from a cozy box in a sheltered area. Straw or hay bedding also works well for them.&nbsp;

Speak to your veterinarian about calming medication if the pet's anxiety is severe.&nbsp;Ensure pets have easy access to food and water bowls and that they know where the bowls are located.&nbsp;If your pet is not housebroken, Nelson recommends keeping them on floors that are easily cleaned.&nbsp;&nbsp;Homes do have their own environmental threats to pets that are different from those found outdoors.&nbsp;Indoor plants, such as lilies, dieffenbachia and philodendron, can be toxic to pets," Nelson said. "Before bringing pets inside, take an inventory of what plants you have and find out if they are poisonous, then move them to an inaccessible place."&nbsp;Nelson listed some additional common items found in the home that can also be harmful to our furry friends:&nbsp;●Chocolate●Raisins●Onions●Electrical cords●Candles●PotpourriWith proper care and preparation, pets can be comfortable outside during cold weather, Nelson said.&nbsp;"Outdoor shelters should not be too big in order to prevent loss of heat to dead space," Nelson said. "The door should face the south or west to reduce wind gusts. Use clean straw or hay for bedding, as blankets tend to get trampled easily and lose their insulating effect. If your pet will allow it, hanging a blanket over the door or using a pet flap will keep the wind out."&nbsp;According to Nelson, cats also benefit from a cozy box in a sheltered area. Straw or hay bedding also works well for them.&nbsp;"Outside water bowls should be checked at least twice a day for ice, and more often during particularly frigid weather like we will experience this week, to prevent dehydration," Nelson said. "A heated water bowl is a better option."&nbsp;Nelson advises that some outside-dwelling pets may need an increase in food during cold weather to help pets maintain body heat.&nbsp;The age of the pet can make it more susceptible to cold weather. Young and senior pets are more prone to hypothermia, so they should be kept in a warm environment. &nbsp;"Pets with osteoarthritis should be treated with extra care," Nelson added. "Keep them indoors in a warm and well-cushioned area. You can speak with your veterinarian about pain medication options and therapeutic diets that can help ease the pain of arthritic joints."&nbsp;Nelson's additional winter weather safety tips for pets include:&nbsp;●If you have a short-haired dog, sweaters are a good idea. Sweaters made out of cotton, fleece or natural fibers are preferred. Make sure the sweater fits well, does not catch the dog's feet and cannot be easily pulled off. Avoid sweaters with decorations that could be torn off and ingested.●Outdoor cats will seek warmth, including near or on a car engine. Honk the horn on your vehicle or bang on the hood before starting the engine in order to scare off any cats that may be warming themselves.●Rinse off your pet's feet if they have been walking on treated surfaces, and do not let them lick it off. It is best to avoid treated walkways, but if your pet must frequently walk on these surfaces, consider having them wear booties to protect their feet. The booties can also help protect their feet from painful ice balls that can form on the bottom of the paws. ●Antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Immediately and thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol, which is more pet friendly — but still not entirely harmless.&nbsp;Frostbite can affect the ears, feet and noses of pets just as it does in people. To avoid frostbite, do not let your pet out in the extreme cold for a long period of time. Chances are that if you get too cold to be outside, it's probably too cold for your pet as well.
