Need to escape the heat? The Salina YMCA is the place to be.

Salina YMCA President/CEO Angie Lassley told Salina Post that due to the consistent high temperatures, the Salina YMCA&nbsp; will serve as a cooling center for folks needing to escape the heat.

"It's been a couple of years since we've needed to do this, but we have done this in the past," Lassley said. " We have a large enough facility that we can accommodate people in different areas to relax and cool off."

The YMCA Cooling Center will be open from&nbsp; 4:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday 7 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

"We do check all photo IDs," Lassley said "This is required for anyone over 18. They will be added to our system and checked against the sex offender screening prior to access."&nbsp;

On Tuesday through Saturday, August 1st through 5th, Vance Brothers of Kansas City, Missouri will resurface the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Local roads will be closed to traffic during construction for a period not to exceed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents will be provided sufficient notice of closures and special requests will be accommodated. Arterials and collectors will be resurfaced under traffic.

Microsurfacing is a common method of pavement surface treatment which consists of a polymer-modified asphalt slurry (about 3/8 inch thick) that coats the pavement surface and creates a smooth moisture-resistant barrier. It also increases ride-ability and seals smaller cracks. When combined with proper pavement sealing, micro-surfacing extends the service life of the roadway. Streets are estimated for microsurfacing on a 6 to 8-year cycle at an estimated cost of about $5,000 per block.

The $893,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2023 maintenance capital improvement program.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University officials say an update on the upcoming U.S. Farm Bill and updates on the grain and cattle/beef markets will highlight the&nbsp;<a href="https://agmanager.info/events/risk-and-profit-conference">28th annual Risk and Profit Conference</a>.

A two-day, in-person conference will be held Aug. 17-18 in Manhattan. Then, a similar online version of the conference will be available Aug. 21-25.

Registration is available online. The cost of the in-person conference is $235 ($185 if the participant chooses just one day to attend), and $50 for the online conference. Those who register for the in-person conference will also gain access to the online conference.

Rich Llewelyn, an extension assistant in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, said the conference “gives our faculty a chance to present their research, and a chance to spend time with folks from across the state.”

“We have about 20 faculty members that will be presenting topics and breakout sessions, as well as the grain and livestock market outlook,” Llewelyn said.

A keynote address by Phillip Brasher, executive editor for Agri-Pulse Communications in Washington, D.C., kicks off the program at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. Brasher’s talk is titled, ‘A Washington Take on Farm and Rural Policy Issues, including the upcoming farm bill, commodity programs and conservation, EPA and immigration and labor issues.’

“If there’s a theme to this year’s conference, it’s ag policy and the farm bill,” Llewelyn said. “We don’t know much about what’s going to happen with the next farm bill…but we’ll find out more from Phillip because at this point, he knows a little more than we do.”

K-State grain marketing specialist Dan O’Brien will give the current grain market outlook, and livestock marketing specialist Glynn Tonsor will give the current outlook on the cattle and beef markets.

Norman and Cindy Roth, Kansas farmers from Sterling, will be on hand to share their story of challenges and successes as a Kansas farm family. Also, Llewelyn said the in-person conference will feature 19 breakout sessions; most of those will also be available during the online conference.

Farm Bill, commodity markets highlight K-State’s Risk and Profit Conference

Dustin Sahlmann is like any other coach: He wants his Kansas Wesleyan men’s volleyball team to be successful and works tirelessly to make it happen.

“My philosophy is I want our players be competitive in three things — on the court, in the classroom and, once you leave here, in your job,” said Sahlmann who is entering his second season.

“I think the easiest impact I can have immediately is in the classroom,” he said. “Obviously, I’ve got to build a roster and I’ve got to build talent. But if I can get their heads wrapped around what we’ve got to do on a daily basis in school — because we are student-athletes, not athlete-students — that can set the tone early.”

“If we’re going to talk about being at a place with high expectations, that has to correlate off the court in the classroom,” KWU Director of Athletics Miguel Paredes said. “That’s something we strive to do here, and it’s been going on for quite some time.”

Results show that it’s been successful.

• Twenty of 25 sports teams received NAIA Scholar Team recognition.

• 63.1 percent of student-athletes (350 total) had a 3.0 GPA or better for the spring semester; 233 had a 3.5 or better.

• Fourteen teams improved their cumulative GPA from 2021-22.

Sahlmann’s team raised its cumulative GPA by a department-best 0.56 during the 2022-23 school year. Overall, athletics finished with a 3.14 cumulative GPA.

“For us as coaches, as educators, we have the opportunity, the power to influence our students to always strive to be at their best. We’ve got to make sure that we’re doing our due diligence to help them prepare for what happens,” Paredes said. “The bad thing about sports is sports will retire you before you can retire it. I tell people I don’t have coaches; I have teachers.”

The department’s academic endeavors are led by Ryan Showman, who coaches the women’s basketball team and is assistant athletic director for student experience, a position he assumed in March 2021.

“It’s a long road, because I’m asking coaches to do different things,” he said. “I’m asking them to have meetings with me, I’m asking them to meet with their players who are struggling. I asked a lot of these coaches to be able to get where we are now.”

Showman established a committee of head coaches to help monitor things during the year. It featured a department-wide study hall with time requirements and tutor services. He also met individually with each head coach every two weeks to discuss academics.

“It was a lot of work for me, it was a lot for the other coaches, especially when they’re in season,” he said. “Now they know the expectations, they have owned their academic success.”

“At the end of the day, we’re producing individuals who can have great impact in a positive way on society,” Paredes said. “I think athletics is part of a life-learning tool to help individuals learn how to deal with adversity. How to deal with it correlates to how you learn in the classroom.”

KWU’s Albert Nelson Student Success Center, led by J.D. Koons, assistant vice president for student engagement and success, plays a vital role.

“It’s another resource for our student-athletes to be able to take proctored tests, review papers, help study, help with time management — anything and everything,” Showman said.&nbsp;

“To have that extra resource — not just a professor or a coach but someone else they can go to and get help — has been incredible. It’s very much an active part of what we’re doing academically.”

“When I arrived, Coach Showman was fantastic with helping me navigate through how we were going to handle and approach things,” he said. “Having the Student Success Center and that support was huge.”

Sahlmann’s student-athletes are required to attend 10 hours of study hall each week; the number is reduced if they have a 3.0 GPA.

“It’s part of being in my program,” he said. “For me to enforce that, I’ve got to have the support of everybody else, and that’s easily done here.”

Coyote Athletics Reflects on Successes in the Classroom

The Rolling Hills Zoo is making sure its animals stay cool and comfortable as temperatures soar into the triple digits again this week.&nbsp;

Rolling Hills Zoo offers many different ways for the animals to keep cool when temperatures rise, including:

● Pools (a favorite of tigers, African painted dogs, hyena, anteater and Andean bear)

● Mud wallows (a favorite of our southern white rhino and camel)

● Access to their indoor habitats (these have fans to keep them cool, and the snow leopard even has an air conditioner)

● Ice Blocks (for example, the snow leopard gets one to curl up with in his cave)

● Frozen ice bottles (for example, these are put in the houses on the islands of the lemurs to keep them cool)

● Misters and sprinklers (a favorite of the ostriches)

● Cold Enrichment: Blood icees (a favorite of our big cats) and flavored water icees in a water bottle (a favorite of our primates)

● Shade structures in their outdoor habitats

Hard white (HW) winter wheat varieties continue to be popular among some western Kansas farmers for their high yields, disease resistance and quality. The biggest challenge for hard white is market liquidity and continuity of trade into the marketplace. Kansas Wheat continues to work with the grain handling industry and Federal Grain Inspection Service to revise the grain standards to facilitate the movement of hard white wheat in domestic and international markets and lessen the burden on grain handlers.

Hard white winter wheat is very similar to hard red winter (HRW) wheat apart from a gene impacting the color of the outer bran coat. It can be used for stand-alone whole wheat products with a lighter color or can be used interchangeably by mills with hard red winter, depending on protein and extraction needs.

Hard white wheat had been growing in export demand, primarily to Nigeria out of the Texas Gulf, but the past two years of drought-stricken production shortfalls have impacted that business for Kansas farmers.

Joe is the top seeded variety in west central Kansas, making up 14.3 percent of planted acres. Hard white wheat varieties also make up 11.4 percent of acres in southwest Kansas. Overall, hard white wheat was seeded on 4.7 percent of Kansas’ 8.1 million acres, accounting for 380,700 acres seeded to hard white wheat in the fall of 2022. In these areas, the multi-year drought caused many seeded acres to be abandoned, including an estimated 60% of Kansas’ dryland hard white wheat acres.

In addition to Kansas, hard white wheat is also grown in Colorado, Nebraska and California. The U.S. Wheat Associates Hard White Wheat Committee estimates U.S. total hard white wheat production to be just over 17 million bushels this year.

Overall, the quality of this year’s hard white wheat crop is excellent. While southwest Kansas had to abandon many acres, hard white wheat production increased in areas to the north.

Eric Sperber from Cornerstone Ag in Colby says they’ve taken in four times the hard white wheat they got last year. At this point, hard white is making up about 40 percent of their bushels.

“It’s a lot more than I was anticipating,” said Sperber. “It has been a number of years since we dumped this much white wheat.”

Overall, the quality of this year’s hard white wheat in the Colby area is comparable with the hard red winter, with test weights ranging from 57 to 60 pounds per bushel, with the average ending up on the lower end with the delayed harvest. Earlier-harvested wheat had higher test weights, but they’ve decreased after last week’s rain. Proteins consistently averaged 12.5 percent.

Sperber says Cornerstone is trying to find demand in the market for hard white, as there is currently no international demand. U.S. wheat is priced out of the market. Even if hard white wheat was competitive, other classes are higher priced than international competitors’ prices, so loading a vessel to Nigeria with multiple classes is not an option.

He reports that one large producer in the area was seeing better than 80 bushels per acre yields on hard white variety Joe, from the Kansas Wheat Alliance. The dryland field was planted after corn. Average yields in the area on all hard wheat ranged from 25 bushels per acre on hail-damaged wheat to 70 bushels per acre.

Another producer used Joe as a wheat streak mosaic virus deterrent by planting it around the edges of his hard red winter wheat field. Instead of harvesting the two classes separately, he harvested them together, thinking there wouldn’t be much hard white in the load. Unfortunately, Cornerstone had to classify this as wheat of other classes, resulting in a lower price than either HRW or HW alone. Even with their genetic and end use similarities, it is still important for farmers and grain handlers to keep it segregated to avoid grain grading issues.

Rick Horton of Leoti reports that the newest hard white wheat variety, KS Big Bow, is outyielding its predecessor, Joe, by four to five bushels per acre on his farm in west central Kansas. KS Big Bow was released by Kansas State University in 2022, is marketed by Kansas Wheat Alliance, and will be available to farmers this fall.

Horton says KS Big Bow has the potential to outyield Joe even more, as it was planted with a low population on his farm due to limited seed availability last fall. He says it could be up to 15 bushels per acre above Joe’s yield.

In addition, Horton says KS Big Bow is a stronger plant with better standability and better grain quality, calling it a “better version of Joe.”

Protein was averaging 13.3%, about one percent higher than Joe, and test weights remained at 60 pounds per bushel, even after multiple rains on it. He started to see a little bit of sprout damage on Joe after the rains, but none on KS Big Bow. The harvestability was good, with no shatter.

Compared to Joe, KS Big Bow has improved yield, drought tolerance, straw strength, sprouting tolerance and better baking quality. KS Big Bow also has wheat streak mosaic virus resistance, stripe and stem rust resistance similar to Joe.

The Horton family started harvest on July 4, about a week later than normal, was kept out of the fields for several days due to rain, and wrapped up on July 19. They didn’t destroy many acres, but kept some of the fields that should have been destroyed for seed. Wheat barely came up in the fall, but a .20 to .30 inch rain after planting helped it emerge. While this has been a late harvest because of cool temperatures, Horton says this year’s crop had the “best finishing weather.”

Stewart Whitham, also from Wichita County, grows 100% hard white wheat varieties: two-thirds of his wheat acres were planted to KWA’s Joe and the other third are PlainsGold’s Breck this year. His wheat is half dryland and half irrigated.

He reports that by May, half of their wheat had been abandoned, due to the drought it suffered over the winter. Even with decent stands in the fall, the wheat did not grow after its initial fall tillering.

Whitham started test cutting on July 4, but a storm came in that evening and kept him from starting harvest until July 9.

With these storms have come hail, which has destroyed another 20 percent of Whitham’s wheat crop.

While his harvestable acres have been cut back to only 30 percent of what was planted last fall, Whitham is seeing good quality characteristics for this year’s hard white wheat crop. Test weights have been hanging in there, even after recent rains, at 59 to 60 pounds per bushel. Protein levels are strong, and yields are about two thirds of what he would typically expect. Whitham has seen no sprout damage in his fields as of yet, a strong testament to recent genetic improvements in hard white wheat varieties. Sprout damage would have been eminent in older hard white wheat varieties.

Both varieties have been good for Whitham, and he plans to grow them again next year. He also plans to add the newest hard white wheat variety from Kansas Wheat Alliance, KS Big Bow. His acres will remain about the same this fall. He said Breck has a little better standability than Joe, but they were both good, healthy plants with no disease pressure.

All Whitham’s hard white wheat is stored on his farm and is marketed directly to flour mills or grain companies as is warranted by demand. Unfortunately, Whitham says demand is currently stagnant across the world and it is tough to create a marketing plan with current market volatility. He emphasized the need to increase both international and domestic demand when it comes to hard white wheat.

As with others in the area, Whitham is fighting weed pressure and weather events to get his harvest wrapped up.

Ron Suppes who farms in Lane County has all hard white wheat, namely two Kansas Wheat Alliance varieties, Joe and KS Silverado.

He had to destroy 32 percent of his planted acres due to the drought. The remaining acres are averaging about 20 bushels per acre. He noted that Joe weathered the drought better than KS Silverado. Average test weights for his farm are 58 to 58.5 pounds per bushel, and protein is averaging 15 percent.

KANSAS WHEAT: Hard white wheat popular in western Kansas

On July 28, 1914, World War I began as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

It will allow&nbsp;veterinary regulatory authorities anywhere around the world to facilitate seamless animal movement while ensuring compliance&nbsp;with&nbsp;national pet travel requirements&nbsp;pertaining&nbsp;to rabies. The&nbsp;Kansas State Diagnostic Laboratory, or&nbsp;KSVDL,&nbsp;FAVN test is certified for any country in the world. La Fiera de Ojinaga brings Norteño sound to Kansas State Fair Sept. 15​

This period of war and dramatic social upheaval witnessed a flowering of artistic production, particularly in printmaking and graphic arts. Mexico’s long printmaking tradition dates to the late 1500s. Artists such as José Guadalupe Posada, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros – icons of Mexican modernism – drew on those traditions and everyday imagery to create new messages of social justice meant to appeal directly to the working classes in the Mexican provinces. The work in&nbsp;Folkways&nbsp;is new and a detour from the largely abstracted style that I've been working with for the past ten years. I wanted to more directfully (but playfully) represent people, actions, and traditions that I've encountered along the way while living in Kansas. Folkways are defined as learned behaviors, shared by a social group, built up without conscious design but serving as compelling guides of conduct."

Since emigrating from South Africa to Kansas in 1988, most of&nbsp;<a href="https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001AxMtrp3cXoE0uXy9FuLuVmYGt9gw7CmgGRvxc6m1UUoSFTz4K-AAy4rewND_5QD7hlx9EKttdS1RBE2f64XfFqqLugEQkmzSoiyhn6Oeew9cUp4OI67YkCjB6GHZcJaMS8vyl4RZkFUo2uEwdwmrNg==&amp;c=4_knelAlfklNYLEAcl_hnJXqXTqn8_DbJBKCWPnVOEvXsB5LQ2uRBg==&amp;ch=t8f4Imzpb4HM2-GdrZbOZRH6fLZrsrCgA_nQooxVNwt69ok400tRDA==" target="_blank">Clive Fullagar</a>'s work has been derived from his love of the Flint Hills. He has been very fortunate to be able to record both the dramatic and subtle changes to the landscape brought about by the seasons, weather, light, and human impact. Sometimes these changes are fleeting, occurring in minutes and requiring a continuous presence in place.&nbsp;Fullagar writes, "Most of the work that I am presenting in&nbsp;Finding Roots: Divisionism Revisited&nbsp;is based on the root systems of trees left stranded on a man-made beach in the Tuttle Cove area near Manhattan.&nbsp;The pieces use mixed media and digital tools to explore Divisionism, a style which Birger Sandzén explored through paint. Divisionism emphasized the separation of color into individual shapes or strokes of pigment to enhance the effect of light. The divergence in our work lies in the means and process by which we achieve luminosity."&nbsp;Whereas much of Sandzén’s work used a panoramic view of the landscape, Fullagar adopts a more microscopic lens to expose the intimate structure of the land.

Robert Joy (1943-2023) was an icon in the Great Bend art scene for many years and developed a dedicated following throughout the region. Although he lived in Ellinwood, he regularly commuted to his workspace at Petr's Frame House and later the Shafer Gallery at Barton Community College. He developed his well-known style with the realization that drawing is a lot like writing, "I hadn’t gone to college to hone my handwriting skills, but it was certainly my own style and I didn’t have to work at anything special to produce it. I just moved my pen on a paper and there it was without the slightest effort. Why couldn’t I just do the same thing in drawing and painting? So I just simply started drawing and all the magic began to happen. My brain, with all its crazy way of seeing things, just locked on to that freedom and off I went." His uniquely framed subject matter ranges from cats and nature to his experiences in the Vietnam War and more (see example above).

One person is dead following a single-vehicle accident just before 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in north Saline County.

A Red 1999 Chevy Tahoe driven by Shirley Rodriquez, 65, of Longford, was traveling northbound in the 6500 block of N. Ohio Street, According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.&nbsp;

The driver lost control, the vehicle rolled and left the road. The driver was ejected during the accident.&nbsp;

Rodriquez was transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center where she died of her injuries.&nbsp;
