Celebrating its 18th year, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame proudly announces three prominent Salina businesspersons scheduled to be inducted into the 2023 class.

Quintin Applequist, founder and President of Roberts Industries Inc. (Historic Category, 1946-1999); Mike Beatty, former CEO of Kennedy and Coe (Contemporary Category, 2000-present); Mark and Julie Miller, founders of Advantage Trust Company (Contemporary Category 1999-present).

In addition to the Business Hall of Fame Inductees, the Business Hall of Fame Task Force is excited to announce theSpirit of Salina Award recipient. This award, which was created in 2022, was developed to recognize an emerging entrepreneur in Saline County. The entrepreneur selected will represent the “best of the best” in terms of overcoming obstacles, believing in their dreams, taking risks, and persisting as a small business owner. They embody a spirit-the entrepreneurial spirit of Salina – and those that have come before. This year’s recipient will be announced at the induction ceremony.

The induction ceremony will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2023, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the Salina Country Club. Shingo Hanada, President and CEO of Kubota North America and Kubota Tractor Company, will be the featured speaker.

The Salina Business Hall of Fame was established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to

Salina, earned the respect of the local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life.

Each inductee will be recognized with a commemorative plaque. In addition, plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash. A biography of each inductee will be printed and distributed at the luncheon. 

“The caliber of those that get inducted into the Business Hall of Fame is so high because these are not just people who have achieved success in business, but also who have made integral contributions to the success of the entire community,” Renee Duxler, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce said, “This 2023 class of inductees is particularly exceptional with the imprint that they’ve left on Salina and we’re thrilled to be able to celebrate them.”

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce announces Business Hall of Fame 2023 inductees

A well-known presence, Kate Lindsay is back and excited to serve the school and community after a three-month retirement. She retired from the position as head of theatre at Salina High School South after 35 years. But, she wasn’t finished quite yet.

“I’m beyond excited to work with the educational foundation in their focus to support teachers in providing the best care and education for students at Salina Public Schools,” explained Lindsay.

She grew up in Brookville and graduated from Marymount College. In 2016, she joined the Salina Teacher Leadership Academy, where she received her master’s in Educational Leadership from Kansas State University.

Lindsay has been active in the Salina community by supporting organizations such as Theatre Salina, Women Helping Women, CAPS, and The Smoky Hill River Festival. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends &amp; family, going to see theatre productions (Salina to NYC), Ted Lasso, a good Wordle score, and beautiful Kansas sunsets.

As a former teacher, she has had first-hand experience with the impact the Salina Education Foundation makes on teachers and students. “Whether it was a theatre full of kindergarteners watching performances or hundreds of students working with 305LIVE, the Salina Education Foundation helps bring dreams, aspirations and creativity alive – for teachers and students!”

You never need to pay to sign up for government student loan debt relief programs — but scammers will tell you otherwise. Here’s how to spot scam companies that charge illegal upfront fees for so-called help with your student loans.

The first thing to know is this: you don’t have to pay for help managing your student loans. If someone tries to charge you up front, before they’ve done anything, that’s your first clue that this is a scam.&nbsp;&nbsp;And nobody but a scammer will ever offer you quick loan forgiveness.

Take, for example,&nbsp;Apex, a company that — according to an FTC lawsuit — enrolled people in their sham student loan forgiveness program. During the&nbsp;<a href="https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/covid-19">federal student loan pause</a>, when most borrowers weren’t in contact with their loan servicers, Apex signed people up for what they called debt relief programs.

So, how did they convince borrowers to get on board? Apex employees pretended they worked with the Department of Education (they didn’t) and told borrowers they were their new loan servicers (they weren’t). They then signed borrowers up to make automatic payments to a debt relief program that didn’t exist. The problem? Payments went to Apex’s pockets, rarely making it to actual loan servicers. And, to add insult to injury, the COVID-19 federal student loan pause meant that federal borrowers didn’t have to make any loan payments starting March 2020.

Now that the return to repayment is coming up, start at&nbsp;<a href="http://studentaid.gov/repay">StudentAid.gov/repay</a>&nbsp;to look at the status of your federal student loans. You’ll find, among other things, information on income-driven repayment plans that adjust your monthly payment based on your income. If your loans are private, go directly to your loan servicer.&nbsp;And if you spot a scam, the FTC wants to know about it:&nbsp;<a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.

MCPHERSON COUNTY—A Kansas pilot had a mishap with his aircraft just before noon Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1941&nbsp; Piper&nbsp;Fixed-Wing Single Engine Aircraft piloted by&nbsp; Justin T.&nbsp; Coletti, 33, Salina, lost a piece of his door off of the plane.

The aircraft was circling around to locate but landed in a field&nbsp;500 yards East of 25th Avenue and Arapaho Road southeast of Moundridge.

The pilot aborted the takeoff because there was not enough distance for a safe takeoff and landed again.&nbsp; While the plane was rolling, the pilot had a hard brake when coming to a stop, nosed into the ground and put a slight dent in the propeller blades. There were no injuries.

Salina Public Library shares new titles

Paid positions will add jobs, help increase food security

&nbsp;A Kansas State University program that aims to improve the health of Kansans by increasing access to locally grown foods is giving the effort a big boost this fall.

Over the next two years, the K-State Research and Extension Local Food Systems team will offer 34 paid fellowships to Kansas communities interested in helping to build the state’s local food network. Program coordinator Amanda Lindahl said the 320-hour paid positions not only provide jobs for local residents, but also dedicated time and energy for a local foods system project.

“We hope that this elevates the capacity of the system, facilitating access to resources, to move progress forward toward a more resilient and sustainable Kansas local food system,” Lindahl said.

Lindahl said more than 90% of the Kansans’ food dollars are spent on food shipped from outside of the state.

“If every Kansan spent just $5 per week on local food, it would generate $750 million in revenue for small and mid-sized Kansas farms,” she said, citing data from the Crossroads Resource Center. “Kansas residents are not only unaware of the physical benefits of purchasing more food locally, but also the economic benefits.”

In 2014, the Kansas legislature established the Local Food and Farm Task Force. Since then, Lindahl said considerable momentum has been built in Kansas for local food policy coalitions, or groups of people who work on making healthy, local and sustainable food available for people in their area. In 2021, the Kansas Alliance for Wellness reported that more than 76% of Kansans are represented by a local food policy council.

Still, the challenge remains to further bolster local food systems.

“Assessments show that we need more capacity and people to support the development of our local food system,” Lindahl said. “There is momentum (in Kansas), but many participants involved in the local food system are volunteers, and we hope that by putting paid fellow positions into local communities, some additional momentum will elevate the work.”

“This leads to more available locally produced food that allows people to access healthy foods, (and) creates stronger and healthier Kansas communities.”

K-State’s Local Food Systems team has formed a food systems collaborative with several Kansas organizations to work toward a statewide Farm and Food Council. Lindahl said the group’s goals include leveraging resources and establishing policies that support the development of local and regional food systems.

The fellowships now available to communities are part of that. All Kansas communities are eligible to apply for one of 17 local foods fellowships now available, for projects taking place next spring or summer. An additional 17 fellowship sites will be available in the spring and summer, 2025.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/kansaslocalfoods/get-involved/fellows.html">More information, including deadlines for applications, is available online</a>.

“Fellows will be working on site specific projects that will be determined by the fellow host organizations or businesses,” Lindahl said, adding that some examples might include executing a marketing campaign for a local farmers’ market; coordinating a summer engagement series for a local school or community garden; organizing a list of county or regional local food sellers;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/kansaslocalfoods/get-involved/fellows.html">or many other ideas</a>.

“When we fill every fellowship that we have funding for, we will provide 34 positions across Kansas over the next two years,” Lindahl said. “That will contribute approximately $185,000 toward elevating the capacity for local food systems in Kansas communities. We’d like a lot more funding related to coordinating local food systems, but this is a great start.”

K-State local foods program to offer fellowships for Kansas communities

Concerned about the limited availability of maternal health services in rural Kansas and the state’s high infant mortality rate, leaders with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/research/kansas-center-for-rural-health.html">Kansas Center for Rural Health</a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/salina.html">KU School of Medicine-Salina</a>&nbsp;campus are bringing together providers, hospital CEOs, educators, researchers, students, residents and others for a symposium.

The five-hour Inaugural Rural Maternal Health Symposium, which starts at noon Friday, Sept. 29, will address factors that are impacting care for expectant and new mothers and their babies, with topics ranging from the financial side to the latest mental health care guidelines for new moms.

As a former 15-year rural health practitioner,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/l152f027.html">Lynn Fisher, M.D</a>., the center’s associate director of service and education and an assistant professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/family-and-community-medicine-wichita.html">Department of Family &amp; Community Medicine</a>&nbsp;at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, understands the challenges for Kansas hospitals and clinics that provide maternal services.

The symposium is a perfect fit with the center’s mission of finding ways to reduce or eliminate health disparities in rural health through collaboration with other stakeholders passionate about rural health, according to Fisher and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/ljacobson.html">Lisette Jacobson, Ph.D., MPA,</a><a href="https://www.kumc.edu/ljacobson.html">&nbsp;M.A.</a>,&nbsp;who are helping organize the event. Jacobson is an associate professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/population-health.html">Department of Population Health</a>&nbsp;at KU School of Medicine-Wichita and holds a secondary appointment in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/obgyn-wichita.html">Department of Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology</a>. She serves as the director of the Rural Health Council and is on the center’s maternal health committee.

A clear indication of the critical state of rural health care in Kansas is a recently released report from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chqpr.org/">Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform</a>&nbsp;that puts the state at the top of its list of hospitals at risk of closing. Of the state’s 104 hospitals, 60 (58%) are at risk of closing, with 29 being at immediate risk. And access to maternal health services is even more dire: Only 44 hospitals in rural Kansas offer maternal health services.

“Women already have long drive times to hospitals to deliver their babies so (Kansas hospital closures) will affect maternity services. Maternal morbidity and infant mortality are also higher in rural communities,” Jacobson noted.

Kansas’ death rate among infants is more than six deaths per 1,000 births, according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2020. That’s higher than the national average of more than five deaths per 1,000 births.

Two staff members from the Kansas Department of Health and Education will give an overview of the state of Kansas’ maternal health care in the opening session of the symposium.

Hospital and patient health addressed

Later in the symposium, Emily Dilley, CEO of Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, will give a talk about the financial considerations involved in offering maternal health services, including reimbursements from Medicaid and private insurers.

“We want to be a service to the community, but it can be a financial drain. We get by because we have other services,” said Kearny County Hospital’s chief of nursing, Robin Allaman, MSN, BSN, RN. The hospital delivers about 350 babies a year, with many of those being from outside the county. When Allaman worked as a certified nurse aide at the hospital more than three decades ago, the annual delivery rate was about 30.

“A lot of people, unless they’re in management, don’t understand the financial aspects of providing maternal health care. It’s just not well paid for,” Fisher said.

To address patient care more directly, the symposium will also have sessions on pregnancy complications and outcomes, which will be led by Brian Brost, M.D., a maternal and fetal medicine specialist with the University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City.

It can be difficult to access high-risk pregnancy care in rural areas so having someone share those insights is important, said Jacobson.

During his days as a rural family practice doctor, Fisher said, he appreciated having specialists he could text or call for consultations.

The symposium, which offers the opportunity for continuing education credit, will also provide information on the latest best practices guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. As one of those in the trenches, Allaman said she’s looking forward to hearing how peers and health care professionals at other rural locations are addressing maternal health care.

“Any ideas — ways to be cost efficient, ways to be prepared for emergencies — because it’s two lives, and one is a young life, when you’re doing a delivery,” she said. “There are just many things that you can gain … even if it’s only one thing you walk away with, that one item is worth it, but usually it’s way more than that one item.”

She added, “KU has been very supportive in their rural health care initiatives, and I’ve found a tremendous amount of support throughout my career.”

The center in particular wants to be a collaborative resource, Fisher said.

 </figure>By AMY GEISZLER-JONES KU Medical CenterConcerned about the limited availability of maternal health services in rural Kansas and the state’s high infant mortality rate, leaders with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/research/kansas-center-for-rural-health.html">Kansas Center for Rural Health</a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/salina.html">KU School of Medicine-Salina</a>&nbsp;campus are bringing together providers, hospital CEOs, educators, researchers, students, residents and others for a symposium.The five-hour Inaugural Rural Maternal Health Symposium, which starts at noon Friday, Sept. 29, will address factors that are impacting care for expectant and new mothers and their babies, with topics ranging from the financial side to the latest mental health care guidelines for new moms.As a former 15-year rural health practitioner,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/l152f027.html">Lynn Fisher, M.D</a>., the center’s associate director of service and education and an assistant professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/family-and-community-medicine-wichita.html">Department of Family &amp; Community Medicine</a>&nbsp;at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, understands the challenges for Kansas hospitals and clinics that provide maternal services.The symposium is a perfect fit with the center’s mission of finding ways to reduce or eliminate health disparities in rural health through collaboration with other stakeholders passionate about rural health, according to Fisher and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/ljacobson.html">Lisette Jacobson, Ph.D., MPA,</a><a href="https://www.kumc.edu/ljacobson.html">&nbsp;M.A.</a>,&nbsp;who are helping organize the event. Jacobson is an associate professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/population-health.html">Department of Population Health</a>&nbsp;at KU School of Medicine-Wichita and holds a secondary appointment in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/academics/obgyn-wichita.html">Department of Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology</a>. She serves as the director of the Rural Health Council and is on the center’s maternal health committee.<h2>Critical state </h2>A clear indication of the critical state of rural health care in Kansas is a recently released report from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chqpr.org/">Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform</a>&nbsp;that puts the state at the top of its list of hospitals at risk of closing. Of the state’s 104 hospitals, 60 (58%) are at risk of closing, with 29 being at immediate risk. And access to maternal health services is even more dire: Only 44 hospitals in rural Kansas offer maternal health services.“Women already have long drive times to hospitals to deliver their babies so (Kansas hospital closures) will affect maternity services. Maternal morbidity and infant mortality are also higher in rural communities,” Jacobson noted.Kansas’ death rate among infants is more than six deaths per 1,000 births, according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2020. That’s higher than the national average of more than five deaths per 1,000 births.Two staff members from the Kansas Department of Health and Education will give an overview of the state of Kansas’ maternal health care in the opening session of the symposium.<h2>Hospital and patient health addressed </h2>Later in the symposium, Emily Dilley, CEO of Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, will give a talk about the financial considerations involved in offering maternal health services, including reimbursements from Medicaid and private insurers.“We want to be a service to the community, but it can be a financial drain. We get by because we have other services,” said Kearny County Hospital’s chief of nursing, Robin Allaman, MSN, BSN, RN. The hospital delivers about 350 babies a year, with many of those being from outside the county. When Allaman worked as a certified nurse aide at the hospital more than three decades ago, the annual delivery rate was about 30.“A lot of people, unless they’re in management, don’t understand the financial aspects of providing maternal health care. It’s just not well paid for,” Fisher said.To address patient care more directly, the symposium will also have sessions on pregnancy complications and outcomes, which will be led by Brian Brost, M.D., a maternal and fetal medicine specialist with the University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City.It can be difficult to access high-risk pregnancy care in rural areas so having someone share those insights is important, said Jacobson.During his days as a rural family practice doctor, Fisher said, he appreciated having specialists he could text or call for consultations.The symposium, which offers the opportunity for continuing education credit, will also provide information on the latest best practices guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. They will be inducted into the hall at the KBHF Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

Located in the Emporia State University School of Business and Technology, this year marks the 35th induction into the KBHF.

"Business leaders selected by the KBHF Board of Directors for induction into the hall are widely known for their contributions to Kansas and for being role models to future business leaders," said KBHF Executive Director John Rich. "KBHF recognizes historical contributors and present-day leaders who have made private enterprise work in Kansas and throughout the country."

The KBHF Board of Directors is made of business and community leaders from across the state of Kansas and from Kansas universities who are passionate about recognizing the leaders of the state's business community.

Charlie’s Car Wash is named after its founder who passed away in 2012.&nbsp;

Charlie Walker was born on May 27, 1932. He grew up in Salina, KS, the oldest in a family that moved frequently due to financial circumstances.&nbsp; In 1947, the 15-year-old took a job working in construction in Dodge City. Charlie dropped out of school after the ninth grade and soon after, he moved to Pueblo, Colorado, and found employment at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Steel Mill. Although he was satisfied with his job, Walker enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the time of the Korean War. He served his 4 ½ year term in the flight engineering division, where he learned self-discipline and gained an understanding of what it takes to be successful.

After completing his Air Force term, Walker spent a brief time as a salesman in Seattle, Washington, before returning to Salina, family in tow. In 1957, he started his first business delivering wholesale tobacco and candy to small businesses in the area. By 1963, Walker and his wife had six children. His income was sufficient but Walker was not satisfied with what he was doing. So he moved on to his next venture.

In the 1960’s, Charlie started two companies that used truck-mounted equipment to provide mobile cleaning solutions. In his travels across North America selling the cleaning equipment, Charlie recognized a need for high quality, professional truck washes and car washes.

Walker noticed that a large part of the customer base for Allied Mobile Power Wash were semi­ truck drivers. He saw the opportunity to meet those needs even better by providing a full­ service, 24-hour, truck washing service. Thus the idea behind the Blue Beacon Truck Wash was born. The first facility was opened in May 1973, and the company added locations as quickly as it could as Blue Beacon gained instant popularity throughout the trucking community.

Charlie’s first self-serve car wash was opened in 1981 using many of the methods and equipment perfected in Charlie’s other vehicle-washing companies. In 1981, the Blue Beacon Company expanded with the creation of the Green Lantern Car Wash and Convenience Store. Both enterprises continue to expand. 

In 1995, Eli Stephens was tasked with transforming the self-serve car washes to our current model. Eli passed away in 2012, but his impact on the company continues today.

As water costs rose and environmental issues became more prevalent, Walker experienced a growing concern for water conservation and reclamation. In 2001, three new Walker companies were created, dedicated to the task of creating positive environmental change in the vehicle wash industry. Today, the combined efforts of Verwater Environmental, Walker Centrifuge Services, and Centrifuge Technologies Trading have produced revolutionary wastewater reclamation equipment and technology.

Today the family of employees, which includes Charlie’s children and grandchildren, strives to continue Charlie’s mission of providing the highest quality washes with exceptional, friendly service.

Charlie’s greatest achievement in life was the way he gave back to his community and those in need. Charlie was a man of humble beginnings, and he never forgot his roots. He was an avid supporter of countless charities. Those closest to his heart included the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.srhc.com/services/cancer-services.php">Tammy Walker Cancer Center</a>, named after his daughter who passed away at the age of 11, and the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.rollinghillszoo.org/">Rolling Hills Zoo</a>, an AZA accredited zoo dedicated to the conservation of endangered species, founded by Charlie.

Carl Ice | 2023 KBHF Contemporary Inductee

In 2020, Carl Ice concluded a highly successful 42-year career with BNSF Railway, the largest freight railroad network in North America. He was promoted through roles of increasing responsibility from his initial hire as an intern to Executive Vice President of Operations and then to President &amp; Chief Operating Officer following the $44 billion sale of the company to Berkshire Hathaway in 2010. Ice eventually rose to lead all aspects of the organization as President &amp; Chief Executive Officer in 2014 and was invited by BNSF to continue to serve on the Board of Directors after his retirement from executive duties in 2020.&nbsp;

Throughout his tenure, BNSF delivered consistent financial outperformance among its peers. Annual revenues increased by 64% from $13.6 billion in 2009 to a peak of $22.3 billion in 2019 while doubling the net margin. Return on investor capital improved from 9.0% to 15.2% during the same period.&nbsp;

Ice emphasized a culture of resiliency that ensured the company’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions during highly variable business cycles. Under his leadership, BNSF continued to grow despite a contraction in the freight railway transportation market from 2014 to 2020 and successfully offset a significant decrease in revenue derived from the transportation of coal by expanding the consumer products and agricultural freight business.&nbsp;

Throughout his career, Ice has believed in the importance of engaged employees and continuous development at all levels of the organization. He championed a new leadership model and implemented the annual leadership development program for all managers, rolled out comprehensive training initiatives for the broader employee base, and achieved an unusual employee retention rate with an average employee tenure of 13 years. It’s not uncommon to find multi-generational railroaders at BNSF.&nbsp;

In addition to his many professional achievements at BNSF, Ice remains involved in the broader community and has fulfilled numerous civic roles in Kansas and nationally. He was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents in 2021.&nbsp;Ice is a member of the Salvation Army National Advisory Board and currently serves as the Chair of the Kansas State University Foundation Board of Trustees as well as serving on the Board of Directors. He has also served on the K-State Alumni Association Board. He was named “Outstanding Philanthropist” by the Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals in 2020, was recognized by the naming of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University in 2018, cited as “Distinguished Citizen” by the Longhorn Cub Scouts of America in 2017, and lauded as “Railroader of the Year” by Railway Age Magazine in 2018.

Ice holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University from where he graduated summa cum laude. He also holds an Associate of Arts degree from Coffeyville Community College.

Ice eventually rose to lead all aspects of the organization as President &amp; Chief Executive Officer in 2014 and was invited by BNSF to continue to serve on the Board of Directors after his retirement from executive duties in 2020.&nbsp;Throughout his tenure, BNSF delivered consistent financial outperformance among its peers. Annual revenues increased by 64% from $13.6 billion in 2009 to a peak of $22.3 billion in 2019 while doubling the net margin. Return on investor capital improved from 9.0% to 15.2% during the same period.&nbsp;Ice emphasized a culture of resiliency that ensured the company’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions during highly variable business cycles. Under his leadership, BNSF continued to grow despite a contraction in the freight railway transportation market from 2014 to 2020 and successfully offset a significant decrease in revenue derived from the transportation of coal by expanding the consumer products and agricultural freight business.&nbsp;Throughout his career, Ice has believed in the importance of engaged employees and continuous development at all levels of the organization. He championed a new leadership model and implemented the annual leadership development program for all managers, rolled out comprehensive training initiatives for the broader employee base, and achieved an unusual employee retention rate with an average employee tenure of 13 years. It’s not uncommon to find multi-generational railroaders at BNSF.&nbsp;In addition to his many professional achievements at BNSF, Ice remains involved in the broader community and has fulfilled numerous civic roles in Kansas and nationally. He was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents in 2021.&nbsp;Ice is a member of the Salvation Army National Advisory Board and currently serves as the Chair of the Kansas State University Foundation Board of Trustees as well as serving on the Board of Directors. He has also served on the K-State Alumni Association Board. He was named “Outstanding Philanthropist” by the Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals in 2020, was recognized by the naming of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University in 2018, cited as “Distinguished Citizen” by the Longhorn Cub Scouts of America in 2017, and lauded as “Railroader of the Year” by Railway Age Magazine in 2018.Ice holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University from where he graduated summa cum laude. Rolling Hills Zoo&nbsp;is excited to&nbsp;announce the arrival of Sylvia,&nbsp;the zoo’s first&nbsp;Linne’s&nbsp;two-toed&nbsp;sloth.&nbsp;

Born at Zoo Miami,&nbsp;this female sloth&nbsp;is&nbsp;now 4 years old, and&nbsp;while still&nbsp;young, she&nbsp;will likely be paired with a male in the future&nbsp;on a breeding recommendation. &nbsp;

Sylvia’s new home is next to the&nbsp;cotton-topped tamarins&nbsp;in the rhino barn. &nbsp;She is currently hand feeding well with her keepers&nbsp;and exploring&nbsp;her space. &nbsp;Her favorite spot&nbsp;is&nbsp;sitting on top of her barrel.

“She seemed to enjoy target training but it has to be on her terms,” shared Siarra Abker, RHZ vet tech.&nbsp;“If she is not in the mood&nbsp;to train,&nbsp;then she just gives you a look like&nbsp;‘will you just go away already’.&nbsp;You also have&nbsp;to have the right snacks to reward her with. &nbsp;She really enjoys&nbsp;sweet potato and pear.”

“If you catch her at the right time,&nbsp;Sylvia&nbsp;can actually be pretty active and moving around,&nbsp;but that time seems&nbsp;to vary from day to day,” added Abker. &nbsp;

The&nbsp;Linne’s&nbsp;two-toed sloth is one of the slowest mammals in the world, spending&nbsp;nearly all of&nbsp;its life hanging upside down in treeswith their long curved claws providing a powerful grip around the branches. &nbsp;They also eat, mate, and even give birth while&nbsp;upsidedown.&nbsp;Even though&nbsp;they&nbsp;are quite clumsy on land&nbsp;and only come down from the trees about once a week to urinate and defecate,&nbsp;sloths are surprisingly&nbsp;good swimmers.&nbsp;In addition to being slow moving, they sleep 15 to 20 hours a day.

Sloths are so sedentary that algae actually grow in their long fur, providing a camouflage to blend into the canopy of the rainforest.&nbsp;Their diet consists of leaves, fruit,&nbsp;blossoms&nbsp;and shoots from trees,&nbsp;with&nbsp;most of their water intake coming&nbsp;from the plants that they eat.&nbsp;

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List rates the conservation status of &nbsp;the earth’s six species of sloths as critical, with only 1,500 sloths still left in the wild according to the World Wildlife Fund, making them one of the most endangered mammals on the planet.&nbsp;

Life for these slow-moving creatures is troublesome, with deforestation and degradation of their natural habitat along with hunting and the illegal wildlife trade as prime reasons for their decline. These tree-dwelling mammals rely on the health of tropical rainforests for food, shelter and space.&nbsp;

Rolling Hills Zoo participates in the&nbsp;Linne’s&nbsp;Two-Toed Sloth Species Survival Plan®, which is a cooperative, inter-zoo program coordinated through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. SSPs help to ensure the survival of selected species in zoos and aquariums, most of which are threatened or endangered.&nbsp;
