The Salina Fire Department and Sign Pro are partnering with Salina Public Schools (SPS) to offer an art contest for SPS elementary students. The winning poster will be featured on the Mobile Fire Safety House and at local fire stations. It will also be showcased on a large poster that will hang in the student's school hallway for the remainder of this year.

Each year, the Mobile Fire Safety House visits SPS elementary schools to educate fourth grade students about fire safety.

“We are excited to partner with Sign Pro to recognize the creativity of our local students,” said Salina Fire Department Prevention Officer, Jeff Daily. “This contest is a great way to get students involved in fire safety and to shine a spotlight on their artistic talents.”

Sign Pro is a local business that specializes in custom signs, banners, and vehicle wraps. They are providing the prize banner for the winning poster.

“We appreciate this opportunity to work with our partners to advocate for fire safety and recognize our young artists,” said Ashley Hutfles, art teacher at Schilling and Stewart schools.

The contest is open to all SPS elementary students. Contest entry forms will be available September 1 at elementary schools and entries are due by September 8. The winner will be announced by the end of September.

The 2023 Kansas Arts Councils Symposium is coming to Salina, KS, on October 11 and 12. Salina Arts &amp; Humanities (SAH), a department of the City of Salina, will host the third annual gathering of arts councils and professionals with the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC). The event will occur at Homewood Suites in Downtown Salina (115 E Mulberry St.) and the Salina Art Center (242 S Santa Fe Ave.).

Targeted towards arts councils, centers, professionals, and community leaders across the state, the Symposium brings together emerging and established organizations to facilitate professional development, partnership, and celebrate the arts in our communities. This year’s focus is building connections and equipping arts leaders to make a difference in their communities. “Salina Arts &amp; Humanities has been a long-time resource partner to the community and region,” said SAH Executive Director Brad Anderson. “The staff is excited to have this opportunity to show off the community and help equip arts leaders from across the state.”

In its third year, 2023 is the first of two years in Salina. “Having the Symposium in Salina makes the event accessible to north central Kansas communities and arts organizations. We are working to make the event applicable to rural and urban perspectives and are excited to join the discussion,” said SAH Operations &amp; Development Manager Anna Pauscher Morawitz.

Salina, KS, is known across the state as a leader in the arts, as the only standalone city department of the arts in Kansas, with a long history of municipal and community support. The event will bring participants from all regions of Kansas to network and learn together, as well as learn about how Salina arts and cultural organizations are working together and with public and privately funded initiatives.

The event starts at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, with a “State of the Arts in Kansas” presentation by KCAIC Director Curtis Young and Assistant Director Kate Van Steenhuyse. A group of arts leaders from Kansas will facilitate discussions throughout the event, ending at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 12. Early bird pricing of $45 per person is available through Friday, September 8, then increasing to $65 for the two-day event. In 1945, U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Japan to set up Allied occupation headquarters.&nbsp;

Submitted Students wanting to learn how to play the guitar or a brass instrument or to learn&nbsp;creative arts&nbsp;media&nbsp;in the new studio should enroll in&nbsp;The Salvation&nbsp;Army’s&nbsp;new&nbsp;Bravo Music and Creative Arts&nbsp;Program&nbsp;which&nbsp;will&nbsp;start on&nbsp;September 14.

Courses will run for 40 weeks and are organized into 8-week&nbsp;units. Students aged 7-18&nbsp;can enroll at no cost. Students over 18&nbsp;can&nbsp;enroll in the AV course for&nbsp;a $25-dollar monthly registration fee.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Enrollment for the creative arts media training will&nbsp;initially&nbsp;be limited to 6 students.

The&nbsp;programs&nbsp;will provide a unique&nbsp;opportunity&nbsp;to&nbsp;explore creativity&nbsp;and develop musical and creative arts talents through a variety of activities, including lessons on instruments, audio/visual&nbsp;hands-on&nbsp;learning,&nbsp;and theory, according to&nbsp;The&nbsp;Salvation Army.&nbsp;The classes are free and held after school on&nbsp;Monday&nbsp;for brass and guitar&nbsp;from 6:00&nbsp;to 8:00 pm&nbsp;and Thursday&nbsp;for&nbsp;AV&nbsp;from 6:00&nbsp;to 7:00 pm,&nbsp;with&nbsp;the goal&nbsp;of&nbsp;providing&nbsp;equal access to music and creative arts education for all students, regardless of their financial situation.

Submitted Students wanting to learn how to play the guitar or a brass instrument or to learn&nbsp;creative arts&nbsp;media&nbsp;in the new studio should enroll in&nbsp;The Salvation&nbsp;Army’s&nbsp;new&nbsp;Bravo Music and Creative Arts&nbsp;Program&nbsp;which&nbsp;will&nbsp;start on&nbsp;September 14.Courses will run for 40 weeks and are organized into 8-week&nbsp;units. Students aged 7-18&nbsp;can enroll at no cost. The American Red Cross is hosting the annual Battle of the Badges as a three-day blood drive beginning on Monday at the Sunrise Presbyterian Church, &nbsp;825 E. Beloit, in Salina. 

Join your community’s first responders and be a lifesaver!&nbsp;

“Courageous, selfless, kind - all words that describe Salina’s first responders, the men and women who step into fires, crime scenes, and crises of all sorts to serve and protect,’’ said&nbsp;Teri&nbsp;Novotny of donor recruitment. “You can add helping save lives to the work of Salina’s first responders as they once again partner with the American Red Cross for the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.” &nbsp;

Though the need for blood doesn’t let up, donations often decline at this time of year as donors become busy with outdoor activities, schools dismiss for summer, and vacations are planned.&nbsp;

Blood donations to the American Red Cross help ensure new moms, premature babies, cancer patients, and accident victims have access to safe, lifesaving blood. The American Red Cross provides about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply.&nbsp;

The American Red Cross has seen a shortfall of about 25,000 blood donations in the first two months of the summer, which makes it hard to keep hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood products.&nbsp;By making an appointment to give blood or platelets in August, donors can keep the national blood supply from falling to shortage levels.

Right now, the Red Cross especially needs type O negative, type O positive, type B negative and type A negative blood donors, as well as platelet donors. For those who don’t know their blood type, making a donation is an easy way to find out this important personal health information. The Red Cross will notify new donors of their blood type soon after they give.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age&nbsp;in most states&nbsp;(16 with parental consent&nbsp;where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

The American Red Cross is now welcoming more donors into its lifesaving mission through updated FDA blood donation eligibility guidelines that eliminate longstanding broad, time-based deferrals based on sexual orientation.&nbsp;

All donors will now answer the same eligibility questions and will be assessed for blood donation based on individual risk factors, not on sexual orientation. This change eliminates the FDA’s previous policy that deferred men who have sex with men from giving blood.

The Red Cross celebrates this historic move as significant progress and remains committed to achieving an inclusive blood donation process that treats all potential donors with equality and respect while maintaining the safety of the blood supply. The Red Cross is committed to achieving further progress and will continue to provide data to the FDA in support of making blood donation even more inclusive.

 'Battle of the Badges' blood drive last day today

One person died in a motorcycle accident in the early morning hours Tuesday in Salina.

Salina Police Lieutenant James Feldman told Salina Post this morning that at approximately 1:30 a.m. this morning, officers were dispatched to the intersection of E. Pacific and N. Front Street in reference to an injury accident involving a motorcycle.&nbsp;

"On arrival, officers located the male subject, a 47-year-old male, lying on the ground," Feldman said. "They began doing life-saving measures. EMS arrived and transported him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead."&nbsp;

Investigators are still working to fully determine the circumstances leading up to the accident.&nbsp; Police have not released the victim's name.

LONGFORD- The Longford PRCA Rodeo is celebrating 67 years of rural America and honoring the cowboy way of life at its annual rodeo coming up this Labor Day weekend.

 The Longford Rodeo will take place on Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2, with nightly performances at 7:30 p.m.

New this year is a barrel racing contest for area youth. “Last year, the community was very supportive of our local youth contestants, so we decided to host a series of summer events and create a special rodeo event just for them,” said Lyle Perry, Longford Rodeo Chairman.

Throughout the summer, local youth participated in three run-off contests. Contestants will have their scores averaged from the three events with the top scores competing in a special rodeo contest on Friday and Saturday night of the rodeo.

&nbsp;“We’re really excited to find new ways to engage our area youth at rodeo. We’re looking forward to everyone coming out to celebrate the area youth, as well as our 67th anniversary,"Perry said. 

In addition to the new youth events, the Longford Rodeo Committee has completed several facility updates to the rodeo grounds, including painting the bucking chutes and ticket booth, the replacement of tin on out buildings, and the addition of a lean-to for shade.

This year’s Longford Rodeo will feature Justin Rumford, 9-time PRCA Clown of the Year, and Cowboy Kenny’s Steel Rodeo as the specialty act. Free barbeque sandwiches will be available to attendees on

Friday night while supplies lasts. On Saturday night, the Longford Rodeo will sponsor a dance with live music from the Sierra Band. A beer garden will be available both nights.

Advance tickets are available at Vanderbilt’s in Salina, Rittel’s Western Wear in Abilene, Friesen Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Clay Center, and more.

Salina Central Cheer Chick-fil-A fundraiser this evening

With weather forecasts saying temperatures will be flirting with the century mark during the Labor Day holiday weekend, people will be looking for ways to stay cool.

The Moundridge Arts Council has the solution, and it’s free.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, the non-profit MAC will host its annual Labor Day Free Concert featuring two musical acts — Garrett Willert and the Tom Page Band.

“The Moundridge Arts Council is incredibly excited to present these two impressive acts for this year’s free concert. It’s not every year we get to bring in two performers, which makes it even more thrilling. I know they are going to put on a great show,” MAC President Todd Vogts said.

The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Moundridge High School auditorium, located at 530 Cole Street in Moundridge. There is no cost to attend.

“We want to thank the Moundridge school district and Superintendent Cody Rierson for partnering with us so we could have an indoor space to enjoy live music,” Vogts said. “Also, we couldn’t present this concert without the support and generosity of the community. It’s their donations and memberships in the Moundridge Arts Council that allow us to offer this opportunity at no cost, and we think doing so is important because then people can attend without worrying about money. Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy the arts.”

Those in attendance will be treated to music from America’s heartland.

Willert, who is from Kingman, performs as a solo act. He sings 90s country music and songs he's written while playing the guitar.

Page is from Wichita and part of two bands — the Haymakers, which he formed with his friend Dustin Arbuckle, and the Tom Page Trio. He is a singer and songwriter who performs folk music, which he refers to as “dust bowl rock ‘n roll.” Listeners will often hear either double bass and one or two mandolins or harmonica in his music.

Moundridge Arts Council hosting free Labor Day concert

&nbsp;While many people would love to see their weight decrease when crossing the scale, beef cattle producers selling cattle by the pound prefer to minimize weight loss animals experience from the farm to the sale facility, said the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

“Shrink refers to weight loss that occurs when bodily fluids or solids are excreted by the calf between home and the sale location,” said K-State veterinarian Brad White on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/08/25/heifer-management-vaccination-timing-for-calves-hidden-cost-of-transportation-shrink/" target="_blank">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

White said this is often a hidden cost because cattle producers don’t always factor that into their marketing plan.

“From a marketing standpoint, shrink is the difference between the amount of weight &nbsp;I got paid for at sale versus the amount of weight I could have sold if I’d done everything right,” K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said.

How the cattle are managed between home and the point of sale can influence how much weight is lost.

“When cattle are stressed, they will increase the frequency of urination and defecation, which increases the amount of shrink,” said Phillip Lancaster, K-State beef cattle nutritionist.

He added: “So when moving cattle be sure to remain calm and go slowly.”

It is also helpful to have good facilities to move the cattle through, the experts said.

K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers added that even with good facilities, well-trained animal handlers are important in reducing shrink.

“You can have the best facilities in the world and yet the wrong handlers will totally negate what you are trying to keep from happening in respect to weight loss, so be sure that if you use third-party handlers that they are well-trained,” Lubbers said.

The goal is to minimize the amount of time the cattle don’t have access to familiar feed and water, according to Larson.

“The worst case scenario is to move the cattle from the pasture to a dry lot with little access to feed and water, and then take them to an auction market where they are not weighed for another day or two,” Larson said. “Even if you give them access to feed and water at the new location, it will take time for them to resume eating and drinking.”

The bottom line, White said, is that “some shrink is unavoidable, but it is greatly influenced by how we manage the nutrition leading up to that point and then how we handle those cattle in the transportation process.”

Cattle Chat: Experts offer tips to minimize weight loss when traveling to sale site

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Donations to Kansas State University in fiscal year 2023 reached more than $226.4 million in private gifts through the Kansas State University Foundation, closely mirroring last year's all-time-record fundraising of $235 million. The value of K-State's long-term investment pool, managed by the KSU Foundation, reached $952.3 million as of June 30, 2023. The&nbsp;foundation's investment performance has consistently outperformed college and university peers in the past few years, ranking No. 7 among the nation's university and college endowments in 2022.

"The stellar performance of foundation staff, combined with the generosity of our alumni and friends, is having a tremendous impact at K-State through significant new gifts for facilities, faculty endowments and scholarships,"&nbsp;said Greg Willems, president and CEO of the KSU Foundation.

One of the truly remarkable highlights of the year was securing over $75 million in record time to compete for matching funds from the state of Kansas for the university's Ag Innovation Initiative. In February, K-State President Richard Linton certified the amount — raised through collaboration between the foundation and College of Agriculture in just four months — and the state awarded $25 million in matching funds.

"The K-State community of donors — alumni, friends and corporate partners — came together this year to advance not only K-State but also the 105 counties we serve,"&nbsp;said Linton.&nbsp;"Now more than ever, private gifts are central to the success of K-State students, faculty and programs, and to our ability to deliver on our promise to become a next-generation land-grant university.&nbsp;It is an honor to thank all our generous donors who supported K-State this year and every year."

Other key achievements for the 2023 fiscal year included:• Donors established 152 new scholarships to address student needs.

•&nbsp;A $3 million gift helped Cats'&nbsp;Cupboard build a new food pantry facility.

•&nbsp;A total of $47.9 million was raised for scholarships and student success overall.

•&nbsp;Donors gave a record-breaking 11 gifts of $5 million or more, as well as 36 gifts of $1 million or more.

•&nbsp;The largest-ever outright corporate gift to Kansas State University was secured at $10 million from General Atomics for the Salina campus.

•&nbsp;The fourth named deanship at Kansas State University, the Eldon Gideon Dean of the College of Agriculture, was established through a $5 million endowed gift.

•&nbsp;Construction began on a third KSU Foundation-development office building&nbsp;at 1960 Kimball Avenue in the Edge District. The&nbsp;80,000-square-foot&nbsp;development is scheduled for completion in July 2024.

KSU Foundation announces fundraising totals for fiscal year 2023

Salina Police are investigating an early Sunday morning robbery and car theft that took place in central Salina.&nbsp;

Salina Police Lieutenant James Feldman said that at approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday a 28-year-old man from Salina was approached by two unknown individuals and two known individuals while he was walking near Franklin and Sheridan Street.&nbsp;

"Those subjects confronted him and began striking him," Feldman said. "They ended up stealing a backpack valued at $15, the victim's iPhone valued at $1,000, and a key to his vehicle valued at $50. They then left the area."

Feldman said on Monday at approximately 4 a.m., the victim noticed his 2007 silver Audi Q7, valued at $4,000 was missing.

The victim reported the incident to police at 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Feldman said none of the items stolen have been returned. "We are currently looking for the subjects he identified and are still investigating the male suspects that he knew," Feldman said.&nbsp;

The total loss of property was valued at $5,065.
