NWS WICHITA
A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening, impacting numerous counties and cities across Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas, including Saline, Barton, McPherson, Reno, Sedgwick, and surrounding areas.
The National Weather Service has issued this advisory due to expected heat index values reaching up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity levels poses a significant risk for heat-related illnesses.
Areas affected include the counties of Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Woodson, Allen, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper, Sumner, Cowley, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery, and Labette. Cities impacted by the advisory include Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, Great Bend, El Dorado, McPherson, Newton, Augusta, Derby, Arkansas City, Winfield, and many others.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Checking up on relatives and neighbors is also recommended to ensure their safety during the extreme heat.
