The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, effective from 1 PM to 8 PM CDT today, Monday, August 26, 2024.

The advisory affects multiple counties, including Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Woodson, Allen, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper, Sumner, Cowley, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery, and Labette. Cities impacted by the advisory include Salina, Wichita, Hutchinson, El Dorado, Arkansas City, Winfield, Parsons, Coffeyville, Great Bend, Newton, McPherson, Andover, Augusta, and Independence.

Residents in these areas should prepare for dangerously high heat index values, which could reach up to 106 degrees. These conditions pose a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those who are outdoors or lack access to air conditioning. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and check on vulnerable individuals, including relatives and neighbors, to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.
