Salina Downtown Inc. partnered with Salina Selfie Station for decorations and set the scene for anyone to visit for photos and selfies.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University researchers have reported a breakthrough in developing wheat-based foods that contain lower amounts of gluten, a discovery that may lessen the adverse effects for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases.

Gluten is a protein often found in wheat, barley and rye. When people with celiac disease eat gluten, their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine and the small, fingerlike projections known as villi that help the body absorb nutrients properly.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, celiac disease affects 1 in 100 people worldwide, but only about 30% are properly diagnosed.

“We were very surprised that once we edited those genes, we reduced the immunotoxicity caused by gliadin genes in wheat by 47-fold,” said Eduard Akhunov, University Distinguished Professor in K-State’s Department of Plant Pathology and director of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center.

Akhunov leads a group of scientists applying advanced methods of genomics, genetics and genome editing to improve wheat. In this project, the editing of gluten genes was performed by postdoctoral researcher Zitong Yu.

Akhunov said gluten likely will never be completely removed from wheat since it is important for bread-making. Gluten provides the texture, flavor and moisture in such products as bread, bagels, pastries, noodles and more.

“In our edited lines, we also found that while there was a reduction in toxicity (due to lower levels of toxic gluten molecultes), we did not have any reduction in the dough quality that is important for bread-making,” Akhunov said. “That’s extremely important. We achieved these two seemingly contradictory objectives – reducing toxicity, but maintaining the ability to develop quality dough.”

Akhunov added that even though reduced levels of gluten achieved in this study won’t make wheat immediately safe for those with severe levels of celiac disease, “it is important to step forward.”

“Wheat varieties with reduced toxicity levels will help to broaden wheat-based product options for people with minor gluten-related issues,” he said. “The knowledge gained in this research could eventually pave the road for developing new varieties that will be safer for people with celiac disease.”

The very nature of scientific study and wheat breeding means varieties with reduced gluten content may not be available to consumers for many years. Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat, said the trait would not be included in all new varieties and “most likely would be grown under contract with food manufacturers.”

“Wheat research is focused on developing new varieties that meet the demands of the consumer – both domestic and international,” Harries said. “Developing wheat that is safer for celiac sufferers decreases the number of consumers forced to consider wheat alternatives.”

He adds: “There are many wheat farmers and members of their families in Kansas that have celiac disease. It is ironic and unfortunate that they raise wheat for a living but can’t eat wheat foods. Most consumers would prefer not to give up wheat foods in their diet. Developing wheat varieties that are consumable by people with celiac disease would make their lives much easier.”

CRISPR-Cas9 is a genome editing tool that is faster, cheaper and more accurate than previously used methods of genome engineering. Akhunov said his research team worked with a common wheat cultivar known as Fielder, which is amenable to genome editing.

I'd like to bring attention to an issue that touches the heart of our city's future: the richness of our educational content and our approach to what constitutes meaningful learning.

In our schools, it seems there's a hesitation to fully explore a wide range of perspectives and cultural experiences. This hesitancy not only narrows the educational journey of our students but also limits their understanding of the world's diverse tapestry. As someone who values the depth and breadth of human understanding, I find this concerning.

Often, the term "indoctrination" is thrown around in discussions about education, used as a blanket term to dismiss any material that challenges certain established norms. However, education, in its most effective form, is about opening doors to various viewpoints, not closing them. It's about nurturing the ability of our youth to analyze, question, and form well-rounded opinions.

We must consider what we're truly trying to protect by limiting educational content. Is it about maintaining a comfortable status quo, or is it a matter of fearing that diverse knowledge might inspire independent thought and empathy among our young people? In my study of psychology, I've learned that engaging with a broad spectrum of ideas is not only beneficial but critical for comprehensive mental and social growth.

Salina has an opportunity to lead the way in creating an educational environment that truly values diverse content and critical thinking. Let's encourage our educational institutions to be places where varied and sometimes challenging subjects are not shunned but welcomed with intellectual curiosity.

By embracing a curriculum that reflects a wide array of perspectives, we not only enrich the learning experience of our students but also prepare them to be thoughtful, adaptable, and informed individuals in an increasingly interconnected world.

Here's to building a future that values depth, inclusivity, and understanding, starting in our classrooms.

Saline County Mounted Patrol will be conducting a training exercise in the southeast region of Saline County on Saturday, December 16th.

These training exercises are designed to simulate real-life scenarios and enhance the skills and preparedness of our Mounted Patrol team, ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.

We ask the public to give our responders the necessary space to conduct their training effectively. Please refrain from interfering with the exercise.

A Salina woman was transported to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) on Saturday following a single-vehicle accident in west Salina.&nbsp;

The Salina Police Department reported to 1661 West Republic Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. on Dec. 9 to reports of a vehicle accident involving a modular home.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered the victim, 88-year-old Audrey Hutton, and her 2011 Hyundai Elantra resting on the porch of a modular home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"She was driving northbound in the trailer park and when she reached a stop sign instead of stopping she just kept going straight and into the deck of a trailer destroying it in the process," Tonniges said. 

Hutton was transported by EMS to the SRHC with minor injuries. According to Tonniges the damage to the home and vehicle was significant, but he did not specify the exact cost of damages or whether or not the home was still habitable.&nbsp;

Vernon Jewelers heartwarming holiday contest to gift $3,000 engagement ring

Construction on the first new building on the Salina Area Technical College campus in 20 years is expected to begin soon, with fundraising efforts continuing after bids on the building were higher than expected.

The Kansas Board of Regents recently approved the college’s new Industrial Maintenance and Automation program, which will be housed in the new 15,000 square-foot building, and the college’s Board of Trustees has also approved the bid of $5.2 million from Harbin Construction for the building. Building completion is scheduled for December 2024.

Even though Harbin was the lowest bid, it was still roughly $1 million higher than expected, said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols.

“Opening the bids was kind of a surprise,” Nichols said. “But with inflation continuing to rise, the Board decided to move forward rather than try to scale back our plans.”

Nichols said community support remained strong in recent months, including a recent generous donation from the Pestinger Family, and the Salina Airport Authority’s donation of two lots totaling 3.27 acres to house the new building and future campus expansion.

“I think Salina Tech is great for Salina,” said Tom Pestinger. “Some of our best employees come from Salina Tech, and we want future students to have the best experience when they’re in college.” 

&nbsp;Pestinger's involvement with the college goes back more than 30 years. In that time, he’s served on the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning program’s advisory board, and the college’s Board of Trustees.

Salina Airport Authority Executive Director Tim Rogers said the growth is a great sign of growth for the college.&nbsp;

“The Authority welcomes an opportunity to support the growth of the programs at Salina Area Technical College. Salina Tech’s growth is a key component to recruiting and training a skilled workforce for Saline County businesses,” Rogers said.&nbsp;

Other organizations have supported the project in various ways, including Vortex Companies Videographer/Photographer Tanner Colvin spending numerous hours recording and editing a series of videos about the building project and the IMA program, featuring President Nichols, Exline, Inc. President Will Exline and Vortex Companies Welding Lead Luke Doll, who graduated from the college’s Welding Technology program in 2016. Brenda Gutierrez, Executive Director of the Salina Tech Foundation, said that given the higher-than-expected building bids, the fundraising goal to build the building and equip the program is now $6 million, about 80 percent of which has been raised or pledged.

“We’re having ongoing talks with several more potential donors,” Gutierrez said. “And of course smaller donations are welcome.”

Gutierrez said donations to the project still qualify for both matching by former Salinan Damon Button, who has pledged to match new donations up to a total of $400,000 in memory of his parents Robert and Aileen Button – and for a 60 percent tax credit from the State of Kansas.

“What that means is that for every dollar you donate, Salina Tech gets two dollars, and it could cost you as little as 40 cents, depending on your tax situation,” Gutierrez said.

Salina Public Schools (SPS) conducted a community phone survey in September 2023. The statistically reliable sample size included 300 randomly selected adults who were head of household and balanced by geographic location.

Participants had the opportunity to provide feedback about district services, identify district strengths and areas for improvement and more. The community survey, administered by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm, helps the district better understand community members’ perceptions of SPS. “We greatly value and actively seek the community’s input about their priorities and concerns,” said Linn Exline, superintendent at SPS. “Community feedback ensures that our schools remain aligned with community expectations and provide an education that truly serves the needs of our families.”

Results were shared at the December 12 Board of Education meeting. Rick Nobles, president of ExcellenceK12, told board members that overall, the data revealed solid scores on the grading questions. Areas that received the highest scores were:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Quality of school facilities

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Performance of teachers

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Safety of students

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Quality of education

Additionally, top results listed by participants of district strengths included: “don’t know”, “provides a good education” and “teachers/staff.” Teachers and staff have surfaced as a top strength in past surveys as well. “We are very proud of our teachers’ caring and expert work with students,” said Exline. “Their dedication is key to nurture each student’s potential.”

Results about areas needing improvement included “don’t know”, “budget” and “communication with patrons.”

The survey asked participants what the district’s top priority should be. “Providing a good education” topped the list with “teaching life/practical skills” second and “retaining/hiring good teachers/staff” coming in third.

Other results included participants’ views of the SPS workplace with 81% indicating it is an excellent or good place to work. The topics they would like to hear more about from the school include:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Career and Technical Education (CTE)

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bolstering school safety

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Preparation for college, career or military

Participants’ awareness of SPS programs and activities such as CTE, clubs, athletics, academic competitions and fine arts was surveyed. Ninety-three percent said they were very aware or somewhat aware. Seventy-two percent were very aware or somewhat aware of elementary schools’ specials programs such as physical education, art, band, orchestra and library time with certified media specialists.

Ninety-three percent of the phone survey participants rated the concept of expanding early childhood education as very important or somewhat important.

Survey results help inform district plans, communications and projects. “We are grateful to everyone who took the time to participate,” added Exline. “Our schools are a fine example of community partnerships in Salina. Together, we make SPS a great place to learn and work.”

On Sunday, Dec. 10, the Salina Police Department arrived at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of South Santa Fe Avenue. There, officers spoke with 37-year-old Xavier Valle, the neighbor who fought with a knife. 

According to SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges, through questioning Valle, they discovered the other individual involved in the fight, a 40-year-old man, was at the Salina Regional Health Center getting treatment for his injuries.

"There have been some ongoing issues between them," Tonniges said. "One of them was leaving, the other coming home. They met on the front porch, and I guess all their frustrations just spilled out right there."

Tonniges said a confrontation between the neighbors escalated, and Valle stabbed the 40-year-old victim multiple times. Valle wounded the right side of the victim's abdomen, inflicted two lacerations on the left side of his head and bit him on the cheek.

SPD officers arrested Valle for aggravated battery.

Saline County Jail Activity, Dec. 14

On Dec. 14, 2020, the largest vaccination campaign in U.S. history began with health workers getting shots on the same day the nation’s COVID-19 death toll hit 300,000.

Gridiron Glory Week 14 and 15 winners announced

A neighborhood argument from a dispute over surveillance cameras turned violent on Friday last week, requiring police intervention.

The Salina Police Department reported to the 700 block of Smoky Hill Drive at 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 8 after the ongoing quarrel between neighbors escalated.

According to SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges, 60-year-old Salina resident Erin Branting went to her 36-year-old neighbor's property and turned their surveillance cameras, breaking one in the process.

"While she was doing that, the resident pulled into the driveway and caught her," Tonniges said. "He got out of his car and went to confront her, and she decided to get into his car, and while he was trying to prevent her from leaving, she backed out and ran into him."

Tonniges said the 2014 gold Buick Regal did not injure Branting's neighbor — it only bumped into him.

Officers discovered Branting was intoxicated during the altercation. After arresting her, SPD requested charges for aggravated battery, criminal deprivation of property, DUI, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass and no ignition interlock device.

With temperatures dropping, the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) announced today that Kansans needing financial assistance to keep their heat on this winter can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) earlier this year than in past years.

“Kansas winters can be brutal and no Kansas family should be cold,” said Laura Howard, DCF Secretary. “We are accepting&nbsp;LIEAP&nbsp;applications beginning Dec. 18, rather than the beginning of January as we have traditionally done.”

LIEAP&nbsp;helps Kansans restore or maintain energy services that heat their home. This includes electricity, natural gas, propane and other home heating fuels.

“We understand that applying for benefits can be complicated,” Howard said. “Beginning Dec. 18 through the end of March, DCF and partnering energy companies will be available to help Kansans gather information and submit their&nbsp;LIEAP&nbsp;applications.”

There also was no extra coat, extra boots with wool socks and a pair of winter gloves stashed in the cab along with an emergency blanket that looks like a big piece of aluminum foil. I’ve added all of those and also topped up the tires with air. If I do end up in a ditch, I’d much rather be warm and dry while waiting for help.

Despite all this preparation, I’d still rather not risk finding a ditch or worse during winter weather. The best course is to stay home. When that’s not possible, however, it’s best to be prepared with some extra clothes and a few essentials that should be in a vehicle regardless of the season. Items like a working flashlight, extra batteries, matches, candles and, if you regularly travel to areas with limited cell reception, some food.

Cold, wet weather makes the difference between a bad day and a catastrophic one razor thin. If you do run into trouble, help will take longer to arrive and your survival will depend on what you have in your vehicle. Topping off your gas tank before a trip can ensure a few extra hours of heat if you get stranded.

Usually, your vehicle will offer the most protection from the elements and will be easier to spot in the elements than an individual. If it’s safe, the best thing to do is stay inside the cab and keep warm. Being on the side of a slippery road with reduced visibility is a recipe for getting hit by oncoming traffic. And, in blizzard conditions, it’s exceedingly easy to get lost just a few feet from your vehicle.

Common sense when driving also goes a long way. Check the weather on the route to your destination before leaving. You can even check road conditions at places like www.kandrive.org. Give yourself more time to account for driving slower and stopping more often if necessary. Do without the cruise control if it’s snowing or icing out and remember four-wheel drive doesn’t do anything to increase your ability to stop on slick surfaces.

If conditions allow you to be outside the vehicle, proceed with caution. If you’re attempting to dig out of a snowbank or performing other physical tasks, take plenty of breaks and stay warm. Slow and steady will help keep one accident from becoming another.

It’s far better to arrive at your destination a little late rather than never arrive at all. Take the extra time to prepare as we drive into winter so we can all enjoy the longer, warmer days that lie ahead.

The LIFT program rewards exemplary Saline County residents who want to become teachers.&nbsp; 

The program provides up to $5,000 in loans per year while the student works toward an initial teaching certificate.&nbsp; The Salina Education Foundation forgives up to $5,000 of that loan for each year the new teacher is employed by USD 305.&nbsp;

The primary program provides up to $5,000 in loans, renewable annually for three years (up to four years in a five-year degree program), to qualified high school graduates, college students, classroom paraprofessionals, and other Saline County residents who seek to become certified teachers. If hired, the Salina Education Foundation forgives up to $5,000 of that loan for each year the new teacher is employed by USD 305. Support begins after the recipient's successful completion of his/her freshman year of college.
