Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass for $10.&nbsp; The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from June 1 to August 31.&nbsp; Youth must show the drivers their “Get On &amp; Go” pass when they board the buses.&nbsp;

Riding the bus gives kids the freedom to get around in the summer.&nbsp; The “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass is a great way for kids to get to summer activities, summer lunches, community centers, parks, the library, shopping and more.&nbsp; Social distancing policies will be followed as needed.

The Summer Youth Bus Pass is available for purchase online on May 15, 2024, at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/" target="_blank">www.salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;and Buy A Pass, with options for pick up.&nbsp; They will also be available at OCCK Transportation, 340 N. Santa Fe starting May 15, 2024.&nbsp;

The Summer Pass will also be available digitally in the Token Transit app.&nbsp; All OCCK Transportation services have a digital fare option.

OCCK Get On & Go youth summer bus passes on sale May 15

A Salina resident doing construction work on a property in the 200 block of East Jewell Avenue returned to the home at about 5:18 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and found more than $4,800 in tools missing from the property.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. David Villanueva said that sometime between 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, and the evening of May 3, an unknown suspect broke through a window to gain access to the "oodles of tools."

"A 43-year-old Salina male had apparantly bought this property and had been doing some work on this property," Villanueva said. "He found when he came back that there was a window in the back of the home that had been broken out and entry was made. Inside, he had just oodles of tools."

The total damage done by the unknown suspect amounted to $5,060, with $200 accounted for in the damage to the broken window and the remaining $4,860 as stolen tools.

Villanueva said the suspect stole power tools, levels, drills, saws, an air compressor, a leaf blower, a bandsaw and more from the property.

"To move that much product, you have to have a vehicle. I don't think you're going to be doing all that on foot," Villanueva said. "I would hope that somebody would be able to have some video in that area."

SPD officers continue investigating the burglary.

Almost $5,000 in tools stolen from house under construction

After consultation with the National Weather Service and surrounding district administrators and due to the pending severe weather, the school will be dismissed today, Monday, May 6, at 1 p.m.

Busses will be running at that time. Fifth-grade students attending StarBase will be back by this dismissal time.&nbsp;

USD 298 calls early dismissal preceding severe weather

Cloud County Community College commencement activities are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, May 17 in Arley Bryant Gymnasium on the Concordia campus. The event will recognize&nbsp;197&nbsp;graduates from the Concordia and Geary County campuses and outreach locations.

For those who cannot attend, the ceremony will be livestreamed on the College’s YouTube channel:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@cloudthunderbirds2386/streams" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/@cloudthunderbirds2386/streams</a>.

The link will be available on the college website’s main page, and on social media.

Graduates and their guests are invited to a reception prior to commencement in the T-Bird Café on the Concordia campus from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The nurses’ pinning ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. For those who cannot attend, the event will also be streamed on YouTube. The Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award will be presented to&nbsp;Senator Elaine Bowers.

Senator Elaine S. (Haley) Bowers graduated with her Associates of Arts degree in Travel and Tourism and Business Management in 1983. She said she chose Cloud because of the degree program offered in partnership with Trans World Airlines and the strong connections she made from visiting campus, namely, Wally Carlson.

While attending Cloud, she found her passion in representing the student body and making a difference by participating in Student Senate. She also met and fell in love with her husband, Charlie Bowers, when they both took a bowling class for their PE course. She has worked side by side with her husband at their business, Concordia Auto Mart, Inc. since 1988. Elaine credits her time at Cloud as an opportunity to learn the value of community colleges in Kansas first-hand from people who genuinely cared about her future, which has impacted her career as a Kansas politician.

Sen. Bowers was first elected in 2007 to serve as State Representative for District 107. In 2010, both the Senate and House districts were redrawn due to the previous US census. Senate District #36 was formed, which included House District 107 and added twelve more counties. Today, she represents more than 71,000 people in north central, west, and eastern Kansas in the 36th&nbsp;Senate District. The district is the second largest in the state, with thirteen counties and more than 10,500 square miles.

She is serving in her third Senate term since first being elected in 2012.&nbsp; She is the Chairman of the Transparency and Ethics Committee and serves on Local Government, Utilities, Judiciary, Transportation Committees as a member, the Joint (Senate and House) Post Audit Committee, and the Capitol Preservation Committee appointed by the Senate President.&nbsp;

Sen. Bowers has recently announced her candidacy for re-election to the Kansas State Senate.&nbsp; She seeks to continue her dedicated representation and advocacy for the constituents of her district.

The student speaker at graduation will be Zach Chance, Concordia campus Student Senate president.

Cloud County Community College graduation set for May 17

From Monday through Friday, May 6th through 10th, APAC Shears of Salina will continue work on the City of Salina’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

Broadway Ave. medians, south to State Street on Monday, May 6.

Ninth Street at Cloud Street on May 7-10.

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” to 2” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section. Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

The work will be completed with lane closures. Motorists should expect modest delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

This work is part of the $1.17 million project that is a major component of the City of Salina's $5.9 million 2024 maintenance capital improvement program.

Mill and inlay work continues in Salina

Community members and visitors in town for the 14th Annual Salina ScuptureTour got a chance to hear from the Dodge City, Kansas-based band <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tofueatingshark/">Vegan Shark </a>on Friday, May 3.

Kicking off the weekend on Friday, May 3 several downtown businesses will host artist receptions featuring local talent.
Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat on S. Santa Fe will showcase the works of artist Karla Pricket from 5-7 p.m., while Subvert Studio on E Iron will be featuring Noah Flores with music from DJ K-ODD from 5-8 p.m.

In addition to the art events, Salina Downtown Inc. will host<a href="https://tofueatingshark.bandcamp.com/track/sins-of-a-son"> Vegan Shark</a> at the City Lights Stage,&nbsp;199 N Santa Fe Ave. from 6-8 p.m., providing a mix of indie rock music.&nbsp;

"Vegan Shark is a three-person band from Dodge City and they play kind of bluesy, progressive rock type music," said Leslie Bishop, executive director for Salina Downtown. "We had them last year but it was so blasted hot, so we invited him back and we can't wait to hear them perform."

Drawing inspiration from groups like the Beach Boys, Genesis and Supertramp, Vegan Shark is ready to be back in Salina.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"The City Lights Stage is really cool too. It has a really nice backdrop. Not all towns have stages, and with a big mural in the background and it just adds a lot to to the performance, " said band member Nash Griggs. "We always have a great time in Salina."

Bishop said LIVE First Friday attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and coolers, but please do not bring pets.&nbsp;

🎥UPDATED: A quick look — May LIVE First Friday in Downtown Salina

For many, these next few days and weeks consist of&nbsp;a lot of&nbsp;events that will generally take place outside. For my community, that involves city-wide garage sales, student field days and a&nbsp;huge&nbsp;multiday&nbsp;countywide&nbsp;celebration that includes outdoor performances, student competitions at the park, a carnival and&nbsp;a fantastically&nbsp;impressive&nbsp;parade that attracts residents of our county and beyond to attend.&nbsp;

The talk has already begun about how&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;looking like&nbsp;this&nbsp;year’s&nbsp;county-wide&nbsp;events are gearing up&nbsp;to have&nbsp;“perfect weather".&nbsp;&nbsp;

My husband says he stopped praying for rain a long time ago.&nbsp;It’s&nbsp;not that he&nbsp;doesn’t&nbsp;believe his prayers for&nbsp;rain are heard;&nbsp;it's&nbsp;just that&nbsp;there’s&nbsp;more folks wanting&nbsp;to go to that outdoor concert or the widely anticipated&nbsp;county-wide&nbsp;parade&nbsp;not&nbsp;in the rain.

I have a tab&nbsp;open&nbsp;on my computer that leads me straight to a website containing the current Kansas drought maps. While the maps are full of vivid colors&nbsp;including&nbsp;deep reds and oranges, the colors on display are not&nbsp;the ones&nbsp;we want to see.&nbsp;

The most concerning statistic I&nbsp;can’t&nbsp;help but continually check on is a map&nbsp;shows&nbsp;the soil moisture conditions based on the soil moisture content of the top 20 centimeters&nbsp;of soil.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those top 20 centimeters of soil&nbsp;is&nbsp;the lifeblood for the start of our crops.&nbsp;It’s&nbsp;where the seeds germinate and take root. And in our area,&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;dry — as in deep red, not the color you want to see on the map, dry.

While our corn and popcorn seeds are&nbsp;now&nbsp;in the ground,&nbsp;we’ve&nbsp;decided to hold off planting the soybeans until we catch a rain.&nbsp;We’re&nbsp;waiting for a different kind of&nbsp;“perfect weather”&nbsp;compared to&nbsp;so many other folks right now.&nbsp;

It is my hope&nbsp;that before&nbsp;this piece goes to print, the rain will have arrived for Kansas farmers and ranchers.&nbsp;It is my&nbsp;hope that the drought monitor maps I have been continually checking to see any signs of change&nbsp;begin showing change&nbsp;for the better.&nbsp;

And while my husband may not ask for the rain specifically, I ask others to join me in prayer:

Lord, we cherish the times&nbsp;with our loved ones&nbsp;when we can share a meal&nbsp;together&nbsp;outside.&nbsp;We know&nbsp;for many&nbsp;a&nbsp;lot of planning has to be done to make that happen, but please, Lord, we ask you to help those families enjoy their time together as they move their picnic indoors.

Lord, we know&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;near the end of the school year, and children need to be outside, but provide the teachers with enough strength and patience to keep the kids inside for recess to avoid soggy shoes and socks, wet hair and muddy floors.

Lord, we know that it will be&nbsp;an inconvenience&nbsp;for&nbsp;many,&nbsp;and&nbsp;that&nbsp;there may be less seating and frustrated families, but please move that graduation ceremony from the football field into the&nbsp;school's&nbsp;gym.

And Lord, we know that a lot of work&nbsp;is put into the building of&nbsp;those floats&nbsp;and a lot of&nbsp;people travel many miles to attend, but please, Lord, we ask you to help those parade-goers embrace their celebratory spirit under open umbrellas.&nbsp;Please, Lord, rain on our parade.

For my community, that involves city-wide garage sales, student field days and a&nbsp;huge&nbsp;multiday&nbsp;countywide&nbsp;celebration that includes outdoor performances, student competitions at the park, a carnival and&nbsp;a fantastically&nbsp;impressive&nbsp;parade that attracts residents of our county and beyond to attend.&nbsp;The talk has already begun about how&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;looking like&nbsp;this&nbsp;year’s&nbsp;county-wide&nbsp;events are gearing up&nbsp;to have&nbsp;“perfect weather".&nbsp;&nbsp;My husband says he stopped praying for rain a long time ago.&nbsp;It’s&nbsp;not that he&nbsp;doesn’t&nbsp;believe his prayers for&nbsp;rain are heard;&nbsp;it's&nbsp;just that&nbsp;there’s&nbsp;more folks wanting&nbsp;to go to that outdoor concert or the widely anticipated&nbsp;county-wide&nbsp;parade&nbsp;not&nbsp;in the rain.I have a tab&nbsp;open&nbsp;on my computer that leads me straight to a website containing the current Kansas drought maps. Hello and happy Monday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Over the weekend Kansas Wesleyan’s baseball team participated in this year’s KCAC Baseball Tournament, and finished runner up after a wild three-day run.

The Coyotes entered bracket play as the top seed, and quickly dispatched Evangel 5-1, but fell in a shock upset at the hands of McPherson.

A two-win Saturday would keep the Coyotes in the hunt, and the team would follow it with an elimination win over McPherson on Sunday, but Oklahoma Wesleyan would pull out the win, and the tournament title 6-4.

Despite that, the win over McPherson was an historic one for the Coyotes, who set a new record 44 wins in a single season.

Keeping things on the diamond, Abilene’s Maddie Murray hit two home runs against Chapman over the weekend to break the Cowgirl single season home run record, extending her total to seven this season.

And finally with a sweep of Beloit last week the Sacred Heart baseball team has officially won the NCAA outright with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Knights closed out the regular season 18-2 ranked as the #3 team in Class 1-2A.

The Cardinal 4-H club has had a busy year so far. Many of our members participated in 4-H Club Days, a public speaking competition where members can talk about projects or demonstrate how to do something. The can also sing, play an instrument or even dance. Our club members did very well and some even went to compete at the regional competition in Clay Center.

Another competition our club participated in was Gavel Games, a competition that teaches us about parliamentary procedure and how to run a meeting correctly. We had enough members take part to make up three different teams, and we all learned a lot.

Besides these county-wide competitions, many club members have started competing in their various project areas. Several members of our club took part in the sooting sports project and some even made it to the State competition. We’ve also had many members taking part in state-wide spring livestock shows and placing high or winning their classes with their lambs, pigs or goats.

Other cool events this spring that our club members took part in included Citizenship in Action at the Capitol in Topeka, and our District 4-H Leadership Workshop. We are excited to see what the rest of the year brings for our Cardinal 4-H Members.

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Sunday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Mercury Sable driven by Robin P. Maxwell, 70, Abilene, was westbound on Interstate 70 at the Chapman exit. The car traveled off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail.

EMS transported Maxwell to the Memorial Health System in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Eyecatching, colorful signs often accompany events and celebrations throughout Salina, decorating the sidewalks and street corners to announce "Congratulations!" to graduates or "Happy Birthday!" to a family member.

The woman behind these signs, Jacqueline Wood, owner of the Salina Area Sign Gypsies franchise, places each arrangement after designing and ordering them.

"It's just fun, and usually, it's a really big photo opportunity," Wood said. "It's also a good social media tool for businesses."

Wood purchased the business from Gina Turner last year, who began the franchise a few years prior.

The colorful signs often assist fundraisers and other events by helping patrons find their locations or draw new visitors who may not have heard of the celebration beforehand.

Wood said she enjoys uplifting other local events and that each customer greets her with smiles and excitement.

"It's&nbsp;really fun. There's&nbsp;really&nbsp;nothing bad about it," Wood said. "Everybody is happy to see me because they're celebrating, and&nbsp;so&nbsp;this is part of the celebration, too."

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce often works with Wood for events and promotions across town, and she said that,&nbsp;alongside the community support she receives, the Chamber acts as an additional resource and aid for her LLC.

"The Chamber is really helpful. I'm a member of the Chamber, and they're always willing to promote things that you want to promote and encourage you to get involved and network," Wood said.

Throughout the next few weekends, Wood said she plans on placing celebratory signs at most of the graduations in Saline County, where dozens of students and their family members will pose in front of to capture memories of the day.

Saline County Jail Bookings, May 4

When we think about nurses in the late 1950s and early 1960s, we&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;usually think about someone rappelling down a cliff, leading an entire hospital on the other side of the world or advising U.S. presidents. We may think about them serving their patients with great dedication, advocating for underserved populations and balancing their domestic duties as a wife and mother with their vocation as a nurse.

Janet Hanneman McNulty, a 1958 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Nursing and a volunteer in the Peace Corps shortly after its establishment in 1961, did all those things — and more.

Although she was born during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl&nbsp;of&nbsp;rural Kansas, Janet Fern Hanneman grew up in a linguistically and culturally rich and diverse world. She was born in a small limestone cottage with neither plumbing nor electricity on her&nbsp;grandparents’&nbsp;farm near Lincoln, Kansas. Her grandmother spoke Swedish, Norwegian, German, Danish and English — all languages spoken in the surrounding Kansas communities.&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;mother taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Her&nbsp;father’s&nbsp;first language was German until the outbreak of World War I,&nbsp;following&nbsp;which he spoke English with precision and always in&nbsp;full&nbsp;sentences.

In 1941, the family moved to Washington, Kansas, where Janet, the oldest of five children, graduated from high school in 1954.&nbsp;Located in&nbsp;the&nbsp;north central&nbsp;part of the state, Washington was a cosmopolitan town of about 1,500. Farel Lobaugh, a World War I veteran of the trenches in France, had returned to Washington, where he practiced law, listened to classical music, collected art books and, along with his wife, supported young people in going to KU, including Janet.

&nbsp;Next door to the Hanneman family lived the Huntleys, a physician and a nurse who served as medical missionaries in the 1930s in Sierra Leone, and their children.&nbsp;Janet and Carolyn Huntley, classmates and best friends, both took Mr.&nbsp;Darby’s&nbsp;high school biology class, which they said made college biology seem easy as they prepared to become&nbsp;a nurse and a pediatrician, respectively.

“Washington was an extraordinary community in which to grow up,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;sister, Donna Hanneman Kerr, Ph.D. (Columbia University), professor emeritus and former academic vice provost at the University of Washington. Eight years younger than Janet, Kerr says that her big sister was her North Star:&nbsp;“This community enabled me, but for&nbsp;me&nbsp;Janet led the way, giving me a large horizon.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Janet graduated from the nursing program at KU with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. The following year, she worked as a psychiatric nurse at Maudsley Hospital in London, England,&nbsp;and&nbsp;then studied for another year as a Rotary Fellow in New Zealand. When President Kennedy announced the creation of the Peace Corps in 1961, it seemed&nbsp;like&nbsp;the perfect fit. Janet was&nbsp;one of&nbsp;the first nurses to serve abroad in the Peace Corps.&nbsp;

“With uncles who served in World War II and a younger brother already in the Air Force, she jumped at the opportunity to serve her country,”&nbsp;said Jim McNulty,&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;husband.

Janet received only 30&nbsp;days’&nbsp;notice that she would&nbsp;be shipping out, first&nbsp;for Peace Corps training in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.&nbsp;A photo of her rappelling down a cliff captured the high expectations and&nbsp;the&nbsp;excitement&nbsp;of the time.&nbsp;Even before she arrived in her host country&nbsp;of&nbsp;then West Pakistan, Janet was already unintentionally recruiting for the Peace Corps.

At the Government Mental Hospital in Lahore, Janet used her nursing education to improve&nbsp;basic&nbsp;conditions so quickly that she became well respected despite still being in her 20s.&nbsp;“Ultimately,&nbsp;she was put&nbsp;in charge of leading the development of care in the entire mental hospital,”&nbsp;said Kerr.

The founding director of the Peace Corps, Sargent Shriver, described Janet by name in a speech in 1963:

"Witness Janet Hanneman, a Peace Corps nurse in Pakistan. She was sent to work in a hospital for the mentally ill in Lahore.&nbsp;Her mode of transportation is a bicycle;&nbsp;three times&nbsp;she has had accidents.&nbsp;After the last accident, she carried her arm in a splint for six weeks. When&nbsp;it was healed, she suffered a brain concussion while riding in a motorcycle rickshaw that careened into a ditch; she went on to work and did not discover the concussion until later in the day. That put her to bed for a few days. She recovered. Then, three attacks of amoebic hepatitis put her in the hospital as a patient for periods of 8 days, 19 days, and 25 days. But&nbsp;'Give Up'&nbsp;is not in Janet&nbsp;Hanneman’s&nbsp;vocabulary, and she is back at work in Lahore today, the only psychiatric nurse in&nbsp;all of&nbsp;Pakistan. Not only has she returned to work — she has extended her tour of duty for another year.&nbsp;There are&nbsp;thousands of Volunteers like Janet Hanneman serving in the Peace Corps tonight.&nbsp;They have surprised the world with their patience, compassion, determination, integrity, and dedication.”

When Janet returned from her extended service in West Pakistan, she&nbsp;was featured&nbsp;in a 1965 Life magazine&nbsp;article that discussed Peace Corps volunteers re-integrating into U.S. society. That article was the first to make&nbsp;“culture shock”&nbsp;a household term in the United States.&nbsp;It also explained why Janet was so beloved&nbsp;both&nbsp;in the Peace Corps and&nbsp;in&nbsp;West Pakistan.&nbsp;

“For two and a half years in Pakistan, she almost single-handedly pushed through an astonishing number of improvements — a bed for every patient, the&nbsp;hospital’s&nbsp;first psychiatric research, even a cheerier shade of paint on the wall,”&nbsp;wrote Richard B. Stolley in the March 19, 1965, issue of Life. &nbsp;

"Volunteers like Janet Hanneman McNulty ventured into the unknown;&nbsp;and their passion and drive&nbsp;continues to be an inspiration to&nbsp;us all. Decades later, we see the transformational impact of working side by side, across&nbsp;difference, in a spirit of true partnership,"&nbsp;said Carol Spahn,&nbsp;, the current director of Peace Corps.&nbsp;

Once back in the United States, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a recruiter for the Peace Corps.&nbsp;Janet was recognized by strangers on the street because she appeared in recruiting films and was interviewed on talk shows and radio stations, speaking about everything from how nurses could benefit the Peace Corps to&nbsp;how to manage&nbsp;culture shock when volunteers returned home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When she was in Washington, a letter arrived at the Hanneman home in Junction City, Kansas, addressed to&nbsp;“Miss Janet, Kansas, USA.”&nbsp;It was from one of her patients in Pakistan.

&nbsp;“Apparently&nbsp;those in the Postal Service recognized her from the article in Life magazine.&nbsp;To&nbsp;me&nbsp;it is both touching that one of the patients reached out to her and amazing that the letter found its way to her,”&nbsp;Kerr said.

Today’s&nbsp;Peace Corps remembers the impact of those early volunteers.

“The Peace Corps Volunteers who served in the&nbsp;early years of the agency&nbsp;laid the foundation for all who came after them,”&nbsp;Spahn said.&nbsp;“Volunteers like Janet Hanneman McNulty ventured into the unknown;&nbsp;and&nbsp;their passion and drive&nbsp;continues&nbsp;to&nbsp;be an inspiration to&nbsp;us all.&nbsp;Decades later, we see the transformational impact of working side by side, across&nbsp;difference, in a spirit of true partnership. A lot has changed since then, but the core principles that the Peace Corps&nbsp;was founded&nbsp;on have not.”

When&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;recruiting efforts took her to St.&nbsp;Mary’s&nbsp;Catholic School in Tampa, Florida,&nbsp;there was&nbsp;a young businessman&nbsp;there&nbsp;on a company trip&nbsp;who&nbsp;crossed her path.&nbsp;“It was late, after midnight,”&nbsp;Jim McNulty said. Janet was setting up for a Peace Corps event the next day, and she immediately put him to work.

“When you stand before three nuns and a beautiful lady, you do whatever they need&nbsp;done,”&nbsp;said Jim McNulty. Not&nbsp;even&nbsp;knowing who she was, he asked her to join him for breakfast the next day.&nbsp;She&nbsp;declined.&nbsp;But she, along with&nbsp;other Peace Corps nurses,&nbsp;did have dinner with him — chicken and yellow rice — before she left town.&nbsp;Now 95, James McNulty&nbsp;still&nbsp;remembers taking Janet to play touch football on the beach:&nbsp;“She caught the ball like a pro!”

Janet and Jim were married in August 1965.&nbsp;At the time, Jim was the youngest-ever vice president of Sears &amp; Roebuck. He credits much of his career success to Janet, who adopted his four children and got her license to practice wherever his job took their family — Illinois, Virginia,&nbsp;California. &nbsp;

“She was the most amazing person&nbsp;I’ve&nbsp;ever met,”&nbsp;Jim continued.&nbsp;“And she was always a nurse. For her, nursing was the big&nbsp;thing,&nbsp;until the day she died.”

 </figure>By KAY HAWES Associate Director of News and Media Relations at University of Kansas Medical Center When we think about nurses in the late 1950s and early 1960s, we&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;usually think about someone rappelling down a cliff, leading an entire hospital on the other side of the world or advising U.S. presidents. We may think about them serving their patients with great dedication, advocating for underserved populations and balancing their domestic duties as a wife and mother with their vocation as a nurse.Janet Hanneman McNulty, a 1958 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Nursing and a volunteer in the Peace Corps shortly after its establishment in 1961, did all those things — and more.<h2>Extraordinary beginnings</h2>Although she was born during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl&nbsp;of&nbsp;rural Kansas, Janet Fern Hanneman grew up in a linguistically and culturally rich and diverse world. She was born in a small limestone cottage with neither plumbing nor electricity on her&nbsp;grandparents’&nbsp;farm near Lincoln, Kansas. Her grandmother spoke Swedish, Norwegian, German, Danish and English — all languages spoken in the surrounding Kansas communities.&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;mother taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Her&nbsp;father’s&nbsp;first language was German until the outbreak of World War I,&nbsp;following&nbsp;which he spoke English with precision and always in&nbsp;full&nbsp;sentences.In 1941, the family moved to Washington, Kansas, where Janet, the oldest of five children, graduated from high school in 1954.&nbsp;Located in&nbsp;the&nbsp;north central&nbsp;part of the state, Washington was a cosmopolitan town of about 1,500. Farel Lobaugh, a World War I veteran of the trenches in France, had returned to Washington, where he practiced law, listened to classical music, collected art books and, along with his wife, supported young people in going to KU, including Janet.&nbsp;Next door to the Hanneman family lived the Huntleys, a physician and a nurse who served as medical missionaries in the 1930s in Sierra Leone, and their children.&nbsp;Janet and Carolyn Huntley, classmates and best friends, both took Mr.&nbsp;Darby’s&nbsp;high school biology class, which they said made college biology seem easy as they prepared to become&nbsp;a nurse and a pediatrician, respectively.“Washington was an extraordinary community in which to grow up,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;sister, Donna Hanneman Kerr, Ph.D. (Columbia University), professor emeritus and former academic vice provost at the University of Washington. Eight years younger than Janet, Kerr says that her big sister was her North Star:&nbsp;“This community enabled me, but for&nbsp;me&nbsp;Janet led the way, giving me a large horizon.”&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure><h2>Faraway places, unusual responsibilities</h2>Janet graduated from the nursing program at KU with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. The following year, she worked as a psychiatric nurse at Maudsley Hospital in London, England,&nbsp;and&nbsp;then studied for another year as a Rotary Fellow in New Zealand. When President Kennedy announced the creation of the Peace Corps in 1961, it seemed&nbsp;like&nbsp;the perfect fit. Janet was&nbsp;one of&nbsp;the first nurses to serve abroad in the Peace Corps.&nbsp;“With uncles who served in World War II and a younger brother already in the Air Force, she jumped at the opportunity to serve her country,”&nbsp;said Jim McNulty,&nbsp;Janet’s&nbsp;husband.Janet received only 30&nbsp;days’&nbsp;notice that she would&nbsp;be shipping out, first&nbsp;for Peace Corps training in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.&nbsp;A photo of her rappelling down a cliff captured the high expectations and&nbsp;the&nbsp;excitement&nbsp;of the time.&nbsp;Even before she arrived in her host country&nbsp;of&nbsp;then West Pakistan, Janet was already unintentionally recruiting for the Peace Corps.At the Government Mental Hospital in Lahore, Janet used her nursing education to improve&nbsp;basic&nbsp;conditions so quickly that she became well respected despite still being in her 20s.&nbsp;“Ultimately,&nbsp;she was put&nbsp;in charge of leading the development of care in the entire mental hospital,”&nbsp;said Kerr.The founding director of the Peace Corps, Sargent Shriver, described Janet by name in a speech in 1963:"Witness Janet Hanneman, a Peace Corps nurse in Pakistan. She was sent to work in a hospital for the mentally ill in Lahore.&nbsp;Her mode of transportation is a bicycle;&nbsp;three times&nbsp;she has had accidents.&nbsp;After the last accident, she carried her arm in a splint for six weeks. When&nbsp;it was healed, she suffered a brain concussion while riding in a motorcycle rickshaw that careened into a ditch; she went on to work and did not discover the concussion until later in the day. That put her to bed for a few days. She recovered. Then, three attacks of amoebic hepatitis put her in the hospital as a patient for periods of 8 days, 19 days, and 25 days. But&nbsp;'Give Up'&nbsp;is not in Janet&nbsp;Hanneman’s&nbsp;vocabulary, and she is back at work in Lahore today, the only psychiatric nurse in&nbsp;all of&nbsp;Pakistan. Not only has she returned to work — she has extended her tour of duty for another year.&nbsp;There are&nbsp;thousands of Volunteers like Janet Hanneman serving in the Peace Corps tonight.&nbsp;They have surprised the world with their patience, compassion, determination, integrity, and dedication.”<h2>Face&nbsp;of the Peace Corps</h2>When Janet returned from her extended service in West Pakistan, she&nbsp;was featured&nbsp;in a 1965 Life magazine&nbsp;article that discussed Peace Corps volunteers re-integrating into U.S. society. That article was the first to make&nbsp;“culture shock”&nbsp;a household term in the United States.&nbsp;It also explained why Janet was so beloved&nbsp;both&nbsp;in the Peace Corps and&nbsp;in&nbsp;West Pakistan.&nbsp;“For two and a half years in Pakistan, she almost single-handedly pushed through an astonishing number of improvements — a bed for every patient, the&nbsp;hospital’s&nbsp;first psychiatric research, even a cheerier shade of paint on the wall,”&nbsp;wrote Richard B. Stolley in the March 19, 1965, issue of Life. &nbsp;"Volunteers like Janet Hanneman McNulty ventured into the unknown;&nbsp;and their passion and drive&nbsp;continues to be an inspiration to&nbsp;us all. One of her granddaughters now manages a nursing scholarship program in her name.&nbsp;Another granddaughter is in practice with a doctorate in nursing. Kerr said,&nbsp;“I&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;know how many young people she has encouraged to become a nurse, but&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;at least&nbsp;hundreds,&nbsp;in this and other countries."
