The Salina Crossroads Marathon has 3,240&nbsp;runners registered from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom and is quickly closing on last year’s registration total of 3402.&nbsp;The third annual Salina Crossroads Marathon will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 in downtown Salina&nbsp;and the planning committee has set a goal of 4000 registered runners for the 2024 race.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon was&nbsp;featured&nbsp;recently&nbsp;in Kansas! Magazine with a great article by Patricia E. Ackerman and&nbsp;photography by Tanner Colvin in volume 80-issue 3 for 2024.&nbsp;“The support we have received from local and state-wide media partners as well as running clubs across the United States has been amazing and is a key reason that the Salina Crossroads Marathon has become one of the largest marathon events in Kansas in just its third year,” said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig.&nbsp;

This year Salina Crossroads added the option to register as part of a team and that change has paid off with over 26 teams registered.&nbsp;The Salina Crossroads Marathon reaches out to over 600 running clubs in all 50 states, and this year, Team Take Down, an African American running club with members in all fifty states as well as other countries, will gather for their annual MeetUp event at the marathon in Salina.&nbsp;Team Take Down currently has 185&nbsp;runners registered&nbsp;and there are&nbsp;additional&nbsp;large teams coming from Kansas City Missouri, Tulsa Oklahoma, and Florida.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;2024&nbsp;Salina Crossroads Marathon weekend will feature seven&nbsp;family friendly&nbsp;events.&nbsp;In 2023, 11.71% of runners at the Salina Crossroads Marathon achieved a Boston Marathon qualifying time, which was the highest of any marathon in Kansas. “We appreciate the support from the City of Salina in helping us create a flat, fast, and scenic course and want to say a special thank you to Brent Buchwald and Sgt. Come and go open house at Salina Media Connection

Ribbon cutting for Salina Destination Development multi-family housing project

For most, imagining the behind-the-scenes of a television station or movie set is easy — bright, sweltering lights alongside teleprompters, glossed-up talent and boom mics hovering close by.

Behind-the-scenes at a radio station may be a little trickier to imagine, but for Shane McClintock, the view in the booth is the behind-the-scenes he's dreamed of since childhood.

"All the other kids would be outside playing, and if a radio was on, all I did was listen to it," McClintock said. "I would have just rather have stayed inside and acted like I was on the radio... I would read the newspaper for commercials and play music."

Today, McClintock programs and hosts 99KG, or in its official call letters, KSKG, which, in the most recent update on the <a href="https://tlr.nielsen.com/tlr/public/ratingsDisplay.do?method=loadRatingsForMarket">Nielsen Topline Ratings</a>, his station topped the charts for the tenth year in a row.

McClintock said that the official publication of those ratings stated that KSKG, or 99KG, hosts the "largest share to date" since the company began surveying the Salina, Manhattan market in 2007. Nielsen Topline Ratings published that information in January this year.

99KG Number One for New Country eventually became McClintock's stage for programming an engaging music lineup and high-quality commercials alongside bringing in the Bobby Bones Show.

The Bobby Bones Show is a well-known radio program featuring topics on popular country music and artists.&nbsp;

"It was an art that I felt comfortable in. I wasn't comfortable when I was younger in sports, but it [radio] was something that I was comfortable with and felt confident that I could do it," McClintock said.&nbsp;

McClintock's history with 99KG stretches back to his childhood. Growing up in Salina, 99KG was the station he often listened to and dreamed of sitting in its booth for programming someday.

Before the station topped the charts, 99KG's history goes back to the 1990s. 99KG initially played several genres of music before switching to a Top 40 Country Music Hits station in 1996.

However, 99KG's success started in 2013, after McClintock took over programming the station and became its host.

When McClintock arrived, only a small population of people in the north-central region listened to 99KG, while today, it's the number one station in the area.

"There's a lot of music, mornings, marketing... there's a lot&nbsp;of things&nbsp;that go into building winning radio stations," McClintock said.&nbsp;"It's not just&nbsp;flip&nbsp;it on and&nbsp;hope and pray."

One aspect McClintock focuses on is promotions that directly impact the community — local events, contests for trips across the United States and more.

McClintock uses community events like Dad for a Day and McClintock's ToyAThon to better connect with local Salinans and central Kansans.

Jerry Hinrikus, the general manager for the Eagle Communications Media Center in Salina, said these fundraisers and contests keep a radio station focused on its community.

"Getting involved in the community and having fundraising events, Summer Splash and different things local families and kids can attend," Hinrikus said. "That's where local radio wins."

McClintock saw 99KG's potential when he first discovered it as a child and set his sights on crafting a radio station that his community would love.

"It's the radio station I grew up listening to," McClintock said. "I knew the market without a doubt, and I'm 100% confident in what was missing in this market and radio."

Growing up, McClintock said he didn't have many opportunities to visit Salina's Monster Truck shows, see concerts on the Tony's Pizza Events Center stage or vacation to other states, so one thing he enjoys doing as a radio host is producing various contests that give local kids and families that opportunity.

Another large promotion by 99KG is the Dad for a Day event, where children who lack a steady father figure will join McClintock and a few other staff to visit the Kansas City Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium and the Royals Kauffman Stadium.

In the fall of 2023, McClintock programmed a contest for a trip to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, which covered the entire cost of travel for the winning family.

"To think that I can give away a trip to someone, the idea of&nbsp;giving someone an opportunity&nbsp;to win a trip to New York City to take their kids to something that they may or may not be able to afford is the reason why I've put together promotions with the radio station that I have," McClintock said.&nbsp;

"I would have just rather have stayed inside and acted like I was on the radio... I would read the newspaper for commercials and play music."<figure>

 </figure>Today, McClintock programs and hosts 99KG, or in its official call letters, KSKG, which, in the most recent update on the <a href="https://tlr.nielsen.com/tlr/public/ratingsDisplay.do?method=loadRatingsForMarket">Nielsen Topline Ratings</a>, his station topped the charts for the tenth year in a row.McClintock said that the official publication of those ratings stated that KSKG, or 99KG, hosts the "largest share to date" since the company began surveying the Salina, Manhattan market in 2007. Nielsen Topline Ratings published that information in January this year.<h2>Chasing dreams in the booth</h2>99KG Number One for New Country eventually became McClintock's stage for programming an engaging music lineup and high-quality commercials alongside bringing in the Bobby Bones Show.The Bobby Bones Show is a well-known radio program featuring topics on popular country music and artists.&nbsp;"It was an art that I felt comfortable in. I wasn't comfortable when I was younger in sports, but it [radio] was something that I was comfortable with and felt confident that I could do it," McClintock said.&nbsp;<figure>

Growing up in Salina, 99KG was the station he often listened to and dreamed of sitting in its booth for programming someday.Before the station topped the charts, 99KG's history goes back to the 1990s. 99KG initially played several genres of music before switching to a Top 40 Country Music Hits station in 1996.However, 99KG's success started in 2013, after McClintock took over programming the station and became its host.When McClintock arrived, only a small population of people in the north-central region listened to 99KG, while today, it's the number one station in the area."There's a lot of music, mornings, marketing... there's a lot&nbsp;of things&nbsp;that go into building winning radio stations," McClintock said.&nbsp;"It's not just&nbsp;flip&nbsp;it on and&nbsp;hope and pray."<h2>Focusing on community</h2>One aspect McClintock focuses on is promotions that directly impact the community — local events, contests for trips across the United States and more.McClintock uses community events like Dad for a Day and McClintock's ToyAThon to better connect with local Salinans and central Kansans.Jerry Hinrikus, the general manager for the Eagle Communications Media Center in Salina, said these fundraisers and contests keep a radio station focused on its community.<figure>

"That's where local radio wins."McClintock saw 99KG's potential when he first discovered it as a child and set his sights on crafting a radio station that his community would love."It's the radio station I grew up listening to," McClintock said. The grant has been created to support and expand agritourism businesses across Kansas through converting underutilized or vacant historic barns into new venues.

These grants are specifically designed to rescue iconic barns from likely demolition or collapse and rehabilitate them into spaces conducive for new or expanding agritourism businesses.

Saline County Jail Bookings, May 8

With almost 100 different kinds of boats – from kayaks to canoes to motorboats – many Kansans will&nbsp;be having&nbsp;a great time on the water this year. 

Governor Laura Kelly has declared May 18-24 Safe Boating Week in Kansas, and Safe Kids Kansas, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks want to remind families to take extra steps to keep kids safe out on the water.

Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among Kansas children. Wearing a life jacket improves your odds of surviving a boating accident by 80%. &nbsp;

In 2022, 75% of all fatal boating accident victims in the U.S. drowned, and of those who drowned, 85% were not wearing a life jacket.&nbsp;During National Safe Boating Week, we want to remind all parents of a few simple things they can do to keep their kids safe on a boat&nbsp;and&nbsp;that starts&nbsp;with wearing life jackets.

“Drowning can happen quickly and silently,” said Cherie Sage, State Coordinator for Safe Kids Kansas. “It’s important for children to wear life jackets when&nbsp;they are&nbsp;in or around open water and for adults&nbsp;to actively supervise children, giving them your full attention.”

Follow these safety tips to keep your family safe while boating:

Take a boating safety course.&nbsp;Gain valuable knowledge and on-water experience in a boating safety course with many options for novice to experienced boaters. Always wear a life jacket.&nbsp;Adults and children should always wear a properly fitted life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard while on boats or around open bodies of water. Children ages 12 and under are&nbsp;required by law&nbsp;to wear a life jacket at all times on any watercraft, including paddleboats and kayaks. Older children and adults should set a good safety example for everyone and wear their life jackets, too.

Supervise kids in and around&nbsp;water. When&nbsp;there are several adults&nbsp;present&nbsp;and&nbsp;children are swimming, use a Water Watcher card to designate an adult as the Water Watcher for a certain amount of time (such as 15-minute periods) to prevent lapses in supervision. Educate your children about swimming&nbsp;Every&nbsp;child is different, so enroll children in swimming lessons when you feel they are ready. Teach children skills such as how to tread water and float.&nbsp;Kids should only swim in areas designated for swimming. Teach children that swimming in open bodies of water&nbsp;is different than&nbsp;a swimming pool. They&nbsp;need to&nbsp;be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, undertow and changing weather.

Learn Water Rescue Skills.&nbsp;We know you have a million things to do but learning CPR should be at the top&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;list.&nbsp;Knowing CPR and other water rescue skills will give you tremendous peace of mind.&nbsp;Contact the Red Cross or your local hospital for information about classes.

Watch the weather. Always check the forecast before heading out on the water. Know that&nbsp;weather&nbsp;can change quickly, so have a weather radio or weather app&nbsp;that you can&nbsp;check. If the weather starts to change, head to shore immediately.

Roads closed in Saline County for drainage structure replacements

Although the mightiest storms of the Great Plains missed the city of Salina, some residents still saw severe storm damage.&nbsp;

David Schwartztraub, a resident from the 200 block of South 11th Street, said through curtains of rain on Monday evening, he heard a loud crash and, after the storm passed, ventured outside and saw a large branch across his front porch awning.

"All of a sudden, everything just came crashing down," Schwartztraub said. "I had never seen anything like that. I was looking out the front door and couldn't see out the door with all the rain blowing around so hard."

After Schwartztraub assessed the damage to his home and found another large branch across his backyard fence, he viewed his neighbors and saw little or no storm damage at their houses.

Schwartztraub knew that no tornadoes hit the city, but the roar of the wind and rain made him feel like he was in the middle of a twister.

"Nothing [else] in this neighborhood was damaged," Schwartztraub said.

One of the two large branches that fell crashed across Schwartztraub's porch, snapped his flag pole in half, but missed the house's roof. The other fell across his fence to the backyard.

Dillons senior day Wednesday

The Eisenhower Foundation invites all World War II veterans to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kan., on June 6, 2024, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The D-Day+80 Years event will include a Meet a World War II Veteran Reception, Remembrance Ceremony, Veterans Panel, free admission to the Eisenhower Presidential Museum, speakers, military reenactors, hands-on education programs, and more. This historic event is free and open to the public.

Eisenhower Foundation To Commemorate 80th Anniversary of D-Day

On April 20, the Central Kansas Extension District (CKD) 4-H BB Gun Team went to Great Bend for the Kansas State Spring Shooting Sports Match.  To participate at the state level, youth must have shot an eligible score at one of several regional qualifiers earlier in the year. 

In total, there were nearly 150 4-H’ers from 23 different Extension units.  CKD qualified 14 local youth, which was the most of any unit.

Those making the trip from CKD were Landon Wisbey, Troy Wisbey and Traven Dotson of Bennington, Callan Rensink, Coy Malmberg, Tye Malmberg, Briella Pagel, and Easton Klein of Minneapolis, J.J. Riedel, Jaelyn Gates and Maryn Gates of Salina, and Andrew Knopf, Gauge Fritz and Bailey Fritz of Gypsum.

Landon, Coy, Callan, J.J., Andrew, Gauge, and Traven shot in the Senior Division with all others entered in the Junior Division.  The youth showcased their skills in several positions including Prone (laying down), Standing, Kneeling, and Sitting.  Combined scores from all four positions made up the Aggregate Score.

After a long day of competition, CKD had a great showing with numerous members bringing home awards.  In the Junior Division, Troy Wisbey placed 2nd in Sitting, 4th in Kneeling and was 3rd in the Aggregate.  Bailey Fritz placed 3rd in Standing, 5th in Kneeling and was 5th in the Aggregate.  Easton Klein placed 5th in Prone and was 6th in the Aggregate.  Briella Pagel won the Kneeling position.  For the Seniors, Jaelyn Gates was Runner-Up in Kneeling.  Callan Rensink placed 5th in Prone and Landon Wisbey was 5th in Sitting.

The team of Coy Malmberg, Landon Wisbey, Andrew Knopf, Troy Wisbey, and Jaelyn Gates took 6th place Overall.

To cap off the season, CKD will be traveling to Rogers, Arkansas on June 30 to represent Kansas at the Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match.  Individuals earning a spot at nationals are Andrew Knopf, Gauge Fritz, Callan Rensink, J.J. Riedel, Landon Wisbey, Traven Dotson, and Troy Wisbey.  They will be joining over 400 other youth from across the country at the four-day event.

A 65-year-old Salina woman found her 2006 Saturn Vue missing after someone known to her visited her home to help her with her dogs.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. David Villanueva said that the victim reported that after waking up from a nap around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, the keys to her $5,500 Saturn and the car were missing from her home in the 200 block of N. Second Street.

"Then we found the vehicle up by 1846 N. Main Street," Villanueva said. "They haven't identified [the suspect] yet, but we'll be checking for video there too. Luckily, we got the car back for the lady."

Officers then returned the vehicle to the woman around 12:21 p.m., but the Saturn keys were still missing.

On Monday, Michael Massey homered and Maikel Garcia singled in two runs as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2

The start was moved up a half-hour to avoid the weather, allowing the Royals to collect the victory before the rain began to fall

Cole Ragans allowed two runs on two hits in six innings for the Royals, striking out eight. Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh. Tyler Duffey and Will Smith got through the eighth and Chris Stratton worked the ninth for his second save

Storm season can be stressful for many reasons, but for Kansas gardeners, protecting their plants is a priority.

With Kansas’ storm season in full swing, Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini has tips on how to protect and recover gardens from severe weather damage.

“We are entering storm season and various areas of the state will likely have high winds, excessive rainfall and hail,” Domenghini said.

“The force of rainfall pounding on the soil can result in a thick crust that prevents seed emergence and partially blocks oxygen from reaching roots,” Domenghini said. A shallow cultivation with a rotary hoe or other tool can break up the crusted soil. Domenghini cautions against deep tiling as it could damage young, tender roots.

“Standing water cuts off oxygen to the roots, which can result in plant damage if it doesn’t drain quickly enough,” she said. Plants can sometimes handle 24 hours of standing water, but hot weather following the rainfall can cause the water to become hot enough to ‘cook’ the plants.

“There isn’t much that can be done about this unless a channel can be cut to allow the water to drain,” Domenghini said.

Hail damaged plants should recover quickly as long as only the leaves were damaged. If stems and fruit were damaged the situation may become more serious. “The plant can recover from a few bruises, but if it looks like the plants were mowed down by a weed whip, replanting is in order,” Domenghini said.

“Either wind or water can cause plants to lean,” Domenghini said “They should start to straighten after a few days.” She does not recommend trying to bend them back as the plants often break easily.

TOPEKA — As the dust settles on the legislative maneuvering of the chaotic 2024 session, disability rights advocates applaud a budget provision meant to shorten wait times for disabled Kansans who need services.

Lawmakers overrode Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto to implement a provision that puts caps on the wait times for Kansans who want to receive state-funded disability services. Included in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2023_24/measures/documents/ccrb_sb28_01_0000.pdf">state budget</a>, the provision would forbid the waiting lists from exceeding 6,800 people during the fiscal year that begins in July.&nbsp;

Rocky Nichols, executive director of the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, said the change is “incredibly positive.”

“It tells me the Legislature takes a waiting list seriously,” Nichols said. “This is going to have a huge impact. Hats off, and I really want to commend the Legislature for coming up with these provisos because it’s a very innovative way to ensure that you’re actually going to reduce the waiting list. You set a cap.”

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kdads.ks.gov/docs/librariesprovider17/ltss/hcbs/waivers/participation-reports/2024/waiver-program-participation-report-4.15.24.pdf?sfvrsn=2e483674_3">latest data show</a>s&nbsp;7,698 Kansans currently waiting for services, with 5,342 people on the intellectual and developmental disabilities waitlist and 2,356 people on the physical disability waitlist.

The Legislature set aside $45.8 million, available for fiscal year 2025, to fund services for 1,000 Kansans who are currently on the state’s waiting lists, divided evenly between people with intellectual and physical disabilities and those who have physical disabilities.

If enrollment trends continue along the same lines as last year, when 561 new people enrolled in the intellectual disability waitlist, the proposed new funding would not be enough to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/03/15/state-budget-blueprint-leaves-out-kansans-who-need-state-disability-services/">lessen the waitlist on its own</a>.&nbsp;

During the veto override debate last week, Sen. Rick Billinger, a Goodland Republican, said lawmakers couldn’t “continue to kick this down the road.”

“Folks, we put $38 million into a soccer tournament,” Billinger said. “If we can’t put dollars in here for the IDD and the PD, we better refocus. And I believe that this is a step to try to get us to do better, because we must do better. We’re failing this community.”

The law requires KDADS by January to provide the Legislature with an estimate on the costs of keeping this cap in place. The Legislature will have to pass a supplemental funding bill to cover the costs of keeping the lists below the caps of 4,800 for the IDD waitlist and 2,000 for the PD waitlist.

Kansans with intellectual or developmental disabilities are eligible for Medicaid-funded support waivers that cover a variety of needed services. People who want to receive this assistance are placed on a waiting list supervised by KDADS.But wait times can last more than 10 years, and more and more Kansans have been added to the slow-moving lists. Kansas Reflector examined this issue last year in the series&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/10/18/a-lack-of-imagination-kansans-ask-lawmakers-to-stop-dithering-over-disability-supports/">“On the List</a>.”“The veto override works to ensure 500 new Kansans with intellectual and developmental disabilities are eliminated from our historic, record-high IDD waitlist, and will start receiving essential HCBS waiver services,” said Sara Hart Weir, executive director of the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities. “Moreover, this veto override caps the IDD waitlist in Kansas at 4,800, which is another long-term step toward eliminating our IDD waitlist in the Sunflower State.”Kelly said she supported finding a solution to the wait times. But she vetoed the caps because of concerns about capacity if they were implemented.“By instituting a cap on the number on the waitlists, the agency will be unable to maintain reserve capacity intended for specialty populations such as children coming into DCF custody, Home and Community Based Service,” Kelly said in a veto explanation. “… In addition, continually adding slots to these waivers haphazardly or thoughtlessly capping the waitlist number will not be sufficient or sustainable unless provider capacity is also addressed.”The Senate voted 28-12 and the House 116-9 to override the governor’s veto.“I’m not concerned about creating new problems. The problems continue to be there,” said Sen. Molly Baumgardner, R-Louisburg. “And they continue to be ignored by the agency. I support this veto override effort. And I urge the governor to have her secretary get the work done that needs to be done so that we as a legislature can clearly address the needs of the kids that are on the waitlist.”
