SALINE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Victory motorcycle driven by Timothy Park Barr, 51,&nbsp; Salina, was eastbound on Interstate 70 exiting onto southbound Interstate 135. 

The motorcycle was traveling too fast to make the curve onto Southbound Interstate 135. The motorcycle proceeded to travel through the gore, crossed the southbound lanes of Interstate 135, rolled onto its side and came to a rest against the center guard rail.

EMS transported Barr to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Salina man hospitalized after motorcycle accident

EMS transported Grant and a passenger in the 2008 Ford identified as Steven Ray Marston, 44, Abilene, to the hospital in Abilene.&nbsp; Bruggman was not injured. Grant and Marston were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Hailing from the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, these eight newcomers bring a touch of rare beauty to the zoo. Among them are seven charming wethers (male) and one lovely doe (female), all around four years old.

San Clemente Island goats are more than just adorable; they're a critically endangered heritage breed, with fewer than 1,500 remaining in the United States. Originating from the rugged terrain of San Clemente Island off the coast of southern California, these goats have a fascinating, and mysterious, genetic history.

Standing at 24-28 inches tall and weighing between 50-120 lbs., these goats thrive in mountainous landscapes and alpine meadows. Their diet ranges from pastured grasses to shrubs and twigs. With a lifespan of 10-22 years, they're sure to captivate Zoo guests for years to come.

Sporting hues of red, amber, tan, or light brown, with distinctive black markings, San Clemente Island goats exhibit a deer-like grace, complete with backward-curving horns. Despite their small stature, they possess a gentle temperament.

While they're primarily known as "meat goats," don't underestimate their versatility. Their rich milk is perfect for cheese-making and yogurt, adding yet another dimension to their value.

'New kids on the block' — Rolling Hills Zoo welcomes herd of San Clemente Island goats

Yesterday, a Saline County resident from Assaria called the Saline County Sheriff's Office after trading a new Harley Davidson motorcycle for an antique red 1942 Knucklehead Harley Davidson from someone living on a property in Ottawa County.

Saline County Sherriff Roger Soldan said the Assaria resident visited the property at 1592 Aspen Road in Ottawa County to trade the motorcycles within the last few days.

After trading the motorcycles, a friend of the Assaria resident called him yesterday around noon and informed him of the stolen antique motorcycles from Gypsum.

Once the Assaria resident called the Saline County Sheriff's Office, deputies contacted the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, and both offices obtained search warrants for the property at 1592 Aspen Road.

"The suspect's property located in rural Ottawa County is a farm property, with a house and several outbuildings," said Saline County Lt. Jeremiah Hayes. "The $100,000 Knucklehead [Harley Davidson] was found in a makeshift, lean-to structure."

Deputies discovered more than a few stolen motorcycles from Gypsum on the property and tools and other stolen goods from Saline and Ottawa counties.

Soldan said deputies did not find the 1952 blue Panhead Harley Davidson from Gypsum but found parts to two of the other antique motorcycles.

Although deputies discovered several missing items from thefts in mid to late 2023, they continue to search for the suspect who rented a shop on the Ottawa County property. Soldan said the suspect had&nbsp;been identified&nbsp;while the search continued.

A property owner in Gypsum reported five Harley Davidsons stolen from a home and a commercial property in town to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on Saturday, May 4.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said the owner is from Arizona but inherited the house and commercial building from a family member.

"The neighbor across the street has been taking care of the yard at the house and notices while over there mowing grass and cleaning up the place that there's a door open," Soldan said. "So they get to looking around and discover that there were three motorcycles stolen out of the garage of the house on Spring Street."&nbsp;

The three motorcycles included three antique Harley Davidsons, including a blue 1952 Harley Davidson Panhead valued at $30,000, a red 1945 Harley Davidson Knucklehead valued at $100,000, and a red 1942 Harley Davidson Knucklehead valued at $50,000.

Soldan said the entire loss at the home on Spring Street totaled&nbsp;to&nbsp;$180,000, with an additional $100 in damages from the unknown suspect's break-in.

According to Soldan, the suspect stole another antique motorcycle and tore apart the other in the commercial building on the 400th block of Maple Street in Gypsum.

The suspect tore through a $30,000 1956 Harley Davidson Panhead, leaving it disassembled in pieces inside the commercial building, and stole a $10,000 1973 Harley Davidson Electra Glide.

Soldan said the property owner last visited the residences in October&nbsp;of&nbsp;last year, and Saline County Deputies took his report on Saturday, May 4.

Deputies continue to investigate the multiple antique motorcycle burglaries, but there are no suspects at this time.

UPDATED: Four antique Harley Davidsons stolen from Gypsum buildings, fifth found in pieces

The World Wars brought about a noticeable shortage of male pharmacists.&nbsp;Pharmacy schools actively pursued women&nbsp;and&nbsp;as&nbsp;a result, women began to embrace the&nbsp;field of pharmacy.&nbsp;

Typical of the era, women had to prove their competence to their male counterparts. Most people believed women should only enter the hospital pharmacy or medical technology&nbsp;fields,&nbsp;rather than seek employment in drug stores.

After WWII, many women returned to domestic life.&nbsp;This&nbsp;presented a challenging landscape for female pharmacists as they tried to establish themselves&nbsp;in the profession. Despite these obstacles, women persisted and continued to make strides in&nbsp;the field of&nbsp;pharmacy.&nbsp;

The percentage of female pharmacists in the United States more than doubled, rising from 4% to 9% between 1940 and 1950.

Amy Rasher&nbsp;really&nbsp;loved to learn and teach. She started her career in Solomon, Kansas, as a teacher, a common vocation for many of her time. Rasher stood out because she put all her energy into science and math.&nbsp;

While teaching in Kingman, she lived with the Reynolds family. There&nbsp;she&nbsp;gained practical experience filling prescriptions for Pharmacist Stanley Reynolds. Because of her interest in science, she went to the University of Kansas to study pharmacy in 1945.&nbsp;

At KU, she became the president of Kappa&nbsp;Epsilon's&nbsp;Mu chapter, a group that brought together women in pharmacy. Their motto was&nbsp;"I think, therefore I am."&nbsp;

Rasher graduated in 1947 and passed the&nbsp;test from the&nbsp;Kansas State Board of Pharmacy.&nbsp;After graduation, Stanley Reynolds proudly advertised in the Kingman newspaper that the store now had another registered pharmacist. Rasher had acquired the necessary training to understand how medications worked, allowing her to provide valuable&nbsp;advice to customers.

After working for a while as a pharmacist in Kingman, Rasher moved to Salina for a new beginning. She bought the Pfaltzgraf Pharmacy building at 201 S. Santa Fe Avenue. In January 1958, she happily opened her&nbsp;own&nbsp;store, Amy Rasher Pharmacy.&nbsp;This&nbsp;was a big deal because there were not many businesses owned by women at the time.

It was a historic moment, as she became the first female pharmacist in Salina.&nbsp;Besides giving out medicines, Rasher kept on teaching,&nbsp;putting&nbsp;health tips in her ads to help people&nbsp;learn about staying&nbsp;healthy.&nbsp;Later, she joined up with B &amp; K Prescription Shop, making a&nbsp;big&nbsp;impact on the local pharmacy scene.

Most people believed women should only enter the hospital pharmacy or medical technology&nbsp;fields,&nbsp;rather than seek employment in drug stores.After WWII, many women returned to domestic life.&nbsp;This&nbsp;presented a challenging landscape for female pharmacists as they tried to establish themselves&nbsp;in the profession. Despite these obstacles, women persisted and continued to make strides in&nbsp;the field of&nbsp;pharmacy.&nbsp;READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/1932b0e4-25bd-4267-b5c5-903235581bd3">📸 Flashback Friday: Salina Post - Irene Nelson Carlson - Vol. 40</a>The percentage of female pharmacists in the United States more than doubled, rising from 4% to 9% between 1940 and 1950.<h2>A Scientific Education Journey</h2>Amy Rasher&nbsp;really&nbsp;loved to learn and teach. She started her career in Solomon, Kansas, as a teacher, a common vocation for many of her time. Rasher stood out because she put all her energy into science and math.&nbsp;While teaching in Kingman, she lived with the Reynolds family. There&nbsp;she&nbsp;gained practical experience filling prescriptions for Pharmacist Stanley Reynolds. Because of her interest in science, she went to the University of Kansas to study pharmacy in 1945.&nbsp;At KU, she became the president of Kappa&nbsp;Epsilon's&nbsp;Mu chapter, a group that brought together women in pharmacy. Their motto was&nbsp;"I think, therefore I am."&nbsp;Rasher graduated in 1947 and passed the&nbsp;test from the&nbsp;Kansas State Board of Pharmacy.&nbsp;After graduation, Stanley Reynolds proudly advertised in the Kingman newspaper that the store now had another registered pharmacist. Rasher had acquired the necessary training to understand how medications worked, allowing her to provide valuable&nbsp;advice to customers.After working for a while as a pharmacist in Kingman, Rasher moved to Salina for a new beginning. She bought the Pfaltzgraf Pharmacy building at 201 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Submitted Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers, who participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive — the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

For Salina residents,&nbsp;just place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on the second Saturday in May. The carrier will do the rest. The food is sorted, and delivered to an area food bank or pantry, where it is available for needy families.

Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), with help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers, the drive has delivered more than 1.82 billion pounds of food the past 30 years.

Carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries and shelters. Nearly 1,500 NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved.

The United States Postal Service, National Association of Letter Carriers, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, AFL-CIO, United Way, Vericast, Valpak Direct Marketing Systems, CVS Health, Kellogg’s, and United Food and Commercial Workers International Union are all supporting this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

910 KINA Saturday Morning Show Lineup

One person was severely injured in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Ninth and Cloud Streets in Salina.

Salina Police Sergeant Chad McCary told Salina Post this morning that the accident occurred just before 5 p.m. on May 7 and involved one motorcycle and&nbsp;one&nbsp;vehicle.

Juan Monreal-Esparza, 22, was riding his motorcycle south on Ninth Street near Cloud Street when a 2011 Ford Edge, driven by McKenzie Cramer, 21, of Salina, crossed Cloud Street and struck Esparza.

"Esparza was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with severe facial and hand injuries and was then transported to&nbsp; in Wichita," McCary said. "According to his family and those close to him say he has a long road to recovery."&nbsp;

McCary said Cramer did not sustain injuries as a result of the accident.&nbsp;

Salina Public Library launched an online Digital Archive giving the public virtual access to images ranging from the late 1800s to early 1900s from the collection of over 5,000 historic photos housed in the Campbell Room of local history.&nbsp;

These images will be displayed in an online digital archive through the library’s website at&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapubliclibrary.org/research/local-history/">salinapubliclibrary.org/local-history</a>. With easier access and preservation of these photographs, citizens can be better connected to the history and culture of Salina/Saline County.&nbsp;

The Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board (KSHRAB) awarded Salina Public Library with a Kansas Digital Access to Historic Records (KDAHR) grant of $3,800 for the purchase of a photograph scanner, making this project a reality. The scanner was used to digitize approximately 500 photographs in the library’s collection taken prior to 1900.&nbsp;

“We are thrilled to launch this project that will bring Salina’s past to life by making it more visible.” shared Stefanie Knopp, Head of Information Services.&nbsp;

The KSHRAB works with organizations across Kansas seeking to preserve and increase accessibility to historical records for current and future audiences. The Board established the KDAHR grant program to allow organizations to increase online accessibility to historical records and to increase community engagement with local history.

Salina Public Library has been serving Saline County since 1868 by providing access to information, learning and culture. The library is a community space that provides free internet access, computers, gaming, meeting rooms, events and programs. In 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys, along with Col. Benedict Arnold, captured the British-held&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/76cf958f43a84292877636b165f65066" target="_blank">fortress at Ticonderoga, New York</a>.

In 1818, American patriot Paul Revere, 83, died in Boston.

In 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured by Union forces in Irwinville, Georgia.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/Live-Well-Saline-County-100071074639964/">Live Well Saline County</a>&nbsp;members Daniel Craig, Michelle Coats, and Sheila Kjellberg recently attended the Pathways to A Healthy Kansas Spring Convening in Lawrence, Kansas to receive recognition on behalf of Live Well Saline County for successful completion of the four year $500,000 Pathways to A Healthy Kansas grant initiative.

The grant funding included a coordination grant of $200,000 for each community along with the opportunity to apply for non-competitive implementation grants amounting to $300,000, for a total of up to $500,000. Live Well Saline County designated the Tammy Walker Cancer Center as the fiduciary agent. Daniel Craig, Cancer Outreach Coordinator at Tammy Walker Cancer Center, is the current chair of Live Well Saline County and was the lead grant writer and grant manager for the project.

Live Well Saline County allocated $245,288 from the Pathways to A Healthy Kansas grant towards initiatives aimed at increasing access and safety at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. 

Projects include solar lighting, a site plan, 12 additional parking spaces, six bike racks, and a sidewalk that connects the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to the Broadway business corridor including links to two City Go Bus stops. Additional funding went to support worksite wellness programs, create a hospital garden and relaxation area, and provide scholarship opportunities for community members to attend training through the Kansas Leadership Center. 

“The Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant enabled us to bring everyone together so rather than doing a lot of great individual programs and efforts we were able to work more collaboratively as a community,” said Live Well Saline County Chair Daniel Craig. “Being part of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas cohort provided opportunities for us to learn from other communities and share things that have helped us be successful. Having four years of funding allowed us to be strategic and select projects that will create a long lasting impact on the community.”

Live Well Saline County is planning a community celebration event to highlight the initiatives at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. The event will be held in late summer or early fall once the parking lot project at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank is complete and will serve as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Live Well Saline County.

The grant funding included a coordination grant of $200,000 for each community along with the opportunity to apply for non-competitive implementation grants amounting to $300,000, for a total of up to $500,000. Live Well Saline County designated the Tammy Walker Cancer Center as the fiduciary agent. Daniel Craig, Cancer Outreach Coordinator at Tammy Walker Cancer Center, is the current chair of Live Well Saline County and was the lead grant writer and grant manager for the project.Live Well Saline County allocated $245,288 from the Pathways to A Healthy Kansas grant towards initiatives aimed at increasing access and safety at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. Projects include solar lighting, a site plan, 12 additional parking spaces, six bike racks, and a sidewalk that connects the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to the Broadway business corridor including links to two City Go Bus stops. Additional funding went to support worksite wellness programs, create a hospital garden and relaxation area, and provide scholarship opportunities for community members to attend training through the Kansas Leadership Center. “The Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant enabled us to bring everyone together so rather than doing a lot of great individual programs and efforts we were able to work more collaboratively as a community,” said Live Well Saline County Chair Daniel Craig. “Being part of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas cohort provided opportunities for us to learn from other communities and share things that have helped us be successful. Having four years of funding allowed us to be strategic and select projects that will create a long lasting impact on the community.”Live Well Saline County is planning a community celebration event to highlight the initiatives at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. The event will be held in late summer or early fall once the parking lot project at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank is complete and will serve as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Live Well Saline County. Live Well Saline County recognized for completion of $500,000 grant

The Spray Pad at Jerry Ivey Memorial Park will be closed for an extended period starting May 10 due to repairs needed in the plumbing infrastructure beneath the concrete pad. The closure is necessary to address underground plumbing failures.

According to a statment made on social media, the decision to close the Jerry Ivey Spray Pad was made after careful consideration and exploration of the plumbing infrastructure with a camera designed for internal plumbing. The camera found several plumbing breaks most likely due to settling of the structure. 

Despite regular maintenance and proper winterization, the extent of the repairs required to address the plumbing issues necessitates a more comprehensive approach that requires the facility to be closed for an unknown extended period.

In the meantime, patrons are encouraged to use the other Spray pads in the City of Salina, including Centennial Park and Hawthorne Park. The City remains dedicated to providing safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities for all residents and will work towards solutions for the Jerry Ivey Spray Pad.

Salina Parks and Rec announces extended closure of Jerry Ivey Spray Pad

Just outside city limits, a Saline County resident returned home after being away for a few days and discovered his air conditioner unit upside down, gutted for its copper wiring.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said the 600 block of South Holmes Road resident left home on Sunday, May 5, and returned on Wednesday, May 8, where he discovered the large air conditioning unit damaged.

"He was out doing some yard work and noticed that his air conditioner unit was upside down, and someone had cut all the copper out of it," Soldan said. "He's looking like $5 in loss and $6,000 in damages because [the suspect] pretty much destroyed the unit."

Soldan said the unit was large due to the two-story home's size, causing a heavy loss of damages.

Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies continue investigating the crime — however, there are no suspects&nbsp;at this time.

Saline County resident returns home, finds large AC unit gutted of copper

The Kansas State University Concrete Canoe team took first place at its regional competition at the Mid-America Student Symposium hosted by Missouri University of Science and Technology in April.

The win at the regional event for the American Society of Civil Engineers, or ASCE, gives the K-State team the opportunity to compete at the national competition held on the campus of Brigham Young University from June 20-22. This will be the team's second trip to the national competition in the last three years.

The event challenges participants to create a functioning canoe made of concrete. The process includes designing a hull, performing structural analysis and designing a concrete mixture that satisfies the strength requirements found in the structural analysis. Teams are judged for their final product, design paper, oral presentation and race results. Races include men's and women's sprints and endurance races.

"The objective of the competition is to 'win the bid' to manufacture 100 concrete canoes for the client, in this case, ASCE," said Cody Meyer, team president. "The canoe must meet all the criteria set forward in the 'request for proposals,' which is essentially the project specs."

This year's team changed up its design, opting to pour the canoe in segments that required multiple pours. The resulting canoe segments were then pieced together by pulling steel cables through the segments, putting tension on the cables and then anchoring the cables to the canoe. The team then put the tension force into the canoe segments and pulled them tightly together, and the finished canoe was named Connected.

"The team this year dedicated many hours to making a successful canoe," said Cody Meyer, team president. "They worked incredibly hard to make 'Connected' a reality, and their success is well deserved."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina has been recognized as a Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) Growth Award Winner for program excellence in 2023. 

Every year, BBBS agencies are recognized by BBBSA Nationwide Leadership Council, made up of local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency leaders and board members, for excellence in the organization’s signature 1-to-1 youth mentoring program. 

Out of more than 230 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina is one of 100 organizations to receive this top honor.
