The Salina Police Department is investigating the theft of more than $122,000 worth of copper wire from an Evergy storage facility.

According to Salina Police Capt. James Feldman, officers responded to Evergy, located at 1001 Edison Place, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 5 after employees reported the theft. The company told police that sometime between Feb. 24 and March 3, unknown suspect(s) entered a fenced storage area on the property and stole copper wire from multiple large spools.

The suspect(s) took approximately 2,500 feet of copper wire from two large spools, valued at $84,950, and another 1,742 feet from two smaller spools, valued at $37,296. The total estimated loss is $122,246. Investigators believe the suspect(s) gained entry to the storage area through a hole in the fence.

On March 4, an Evergy employee discovered copper wire insulation near Humbarger Road and Link Road in Saline County. The insulation appeared similar to the type of copper wire taken from the facility.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.
