These self-led and guided hikes are organized annually by parks staff to encourage individuals and families to start the year on the right foot – by getting outside and connecting with nature.

This year, more than 1,000 hikes will be available in state parks around the country, including 33&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Special-Events/First-Day-Hikes">First Day Hike events</a>&nbsp;hosted by&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks">Kansas State Parks</a>. While the distance and rigor of the hikes will vary at each state park, all aim to create a fun experience for all. Savor the beauty of the natural, cultural, and historical resources our state parks offer, and be inspired to continue taking advantage of these local treasures throughout calendar year 2024.

“This will be our 13th&nbsp;year to offer First Day Hikes in Kansas’ state parks and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Linda Lanterman, Kansas State Parks director. “Each year, these events grow more and more popular because they’re a fun and healthy way to start the New Year, they’re a great cure for cabin fever, and they’re held in some of the prettiest parts of our state.”

Kansas State Parks to offer New Year's Day hikes

Early Christmas morning, a heavily-clothed suspect broke into the Rods 5 gas station in Salina and stole $1,500 in merchandise alongside an undisclosed amount of cash.

A passerby reported the burglary to the Salina Police Department at 9:20 a.m. after noticing a broken window at the store at 680 S. Phillips Ave.

"That person was in the store for about three minutes," Tonniges said. "We're trying to identify who that person is... The person was heavily clothed and masked."

According to SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges, surveillance footage captured the suspect entering the store at 5:45 a.m. and stealing cigarettes, vapes, Swisher Sweets and the cash box.

SPD is currently investigating the burglary. The department provides an online tip submission named <a href="https://www.salina-ks.gov/crimestoppers">Crimestoppers</a> if citizens have information regarding the crime.

Saline County Jail Activity, Dec. 27

Rolling Hills Zoo&nbsp;(RHZ)&nbsp;is delighted to introduce its newest resident,&nbsp;Viktoria, a female&nbsp;Amur tiger, born in March 2022&nbsp;at the&nbsp;Roosevelt Park Zoo&nbsp;in&nbsp;Minot, North Dakota.&nbsp;

Described as spirited and spunky,&nbsp;Viktoria's&nbsp;zest for life is evident in her playful interactions,&nbsp;and she has already captured the hearts of her keepers. &nbsp;Viktoria&nbsp;is an eager participate in targettraining&nbsp;with a&nbsp;fondness for bones and diverse enrichments, including&nbsp;scents, spices, boxes, paper and pumpkins.

One&nbsp;of her&nbsp;distinctive features&nbsp;is a&nbsp;speckling&nbsp;on&nbsp;her lower legs, adding&nbsp;to her charm and individuality.

As part of a trio of cubs,&nbsp;Viktoria, along with her siblings Luka and&nbsp;Dmitri,&nbsp;are&nbsp;reaching&nbsp;the cusp of adulthood&nbsp;– a time when fully grown cubs&nbsp;find their independence.&nbsp;&nbsp;While&nbsp;Viktoria&nbsp;will not reach sexual maturity until the age of three or four,&nbsp;her move to&nbsp;Rolling Hills Zoo&nbsp;came on abreeding recommendation&nbsp;as part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;SSP (Species Survival Program). &nbsp;

Prior to&nbsp;Viktoria’s&nbsp;arrival, Dhenuka, the Zoo’s male Amur tiger, moved to&nbsp;another facility&nbsp;on a&nbsp;similar&nbsp;breeding recommendation. Once Viktoria reaches sexual maturity&nbsp;RHZ&nbsp;will&nbsp;receive a male Amur tiger&nbsp;as part of the SSP’s breeding plan. &nbsp;

Sadly, tigers are on the brink of extinction. Just over a century ago, 100,000 wild tigers roamed across Asia. Today, fewer than 3,900 live in a mere&nbsp;4%&nbsp;of their historic range, and there are estimated to be between 265 and 486&nbsp;Amur tigers&nbsp;remaining in the wild.&nbsp;

Along with the other four tiger subspecies,&nbsp;Amur&nbsp;tigers are one of the most endangered carnivores on Earth. Their dwindling population is due to poaching and deforestation, resulting in loss of habitat. &nbsp;

Visitors&nbsp;are invited to come out and&nbsp;enjoy&nbsp;Viktoria's&nbsp;captivating presence and spirited antics as she settles into her new home&nbsp;at Rolling Hills Zoo.

Rolling Hills Zoo&nbsp;is a 65-acre zoological park which includes a world-class wildlife museum&nbsp;is committed to wildlife conservation, education, and providing exceptional experiences for&nbsp;their&nbsp;visitors. Rolling Hills Zoo Welcomes Viktoria: A Spirited Addition to the Zoo

Building resilient schools and homes: free training for parents and community

Raymond Brown spreads a positive message by actively participating in the betterment of his local community. Many resilient heroes work diligently behind the scenes, shoulder to shoulder with family members, neighbors and friends.&nbsp;

Citizens benefit from the countless hours these community champions spend on tasks like garbage disposal, farming, volunteering and social work.&nbsp;

&nbsp;As we embark on this mission to thank the unthanked, we invite you to open your hearts and minds to the incredible stories of these unsung heroes.&nbsp;

One wintery morning almost 40 years ago, Raymond Brown woke up to the news that he no longer had a job just before the holiday season.

With a sudden open schedule and Christmas approaching, he decided to use his extra time to volunteer as a Salina Salvation Army Bell Ringer.

Brown grew up in New Cambria, just a few miles east of Salina. He attended Salina schools, and his family lives in the Salina area.

Today, Brown regularly greets guests at the entrance to the Salina Central Mall 37 years later, red bell in hand with a Salvation Army cap and apron.

"Some of them [bell ringers] say, 'Thanks for the donation,' but I like to socialize with them [passersby]," Brown said. "As they leave, I say, 'Thank you very much and have a good one!' that covers the day you're in and the Christmas season."

After signing up, the Salina Salvation Army asked him to volunteer the following day, which Brown said he gladly accepted.

Brown's first station was at a Food for Less store near Atwoods Home and Ranch on Broadway Boulevard, previously the Kmart in town.&nbsp;

"I didn't have any orientation or anything. I just had to use some common sense," Brown said. "There was a 'Survivor' program on TV, so I just went by it."

Every holiday season, Brown would sign back up as a bell ringer, diligently arriving for his shifts and tracking how much cash his donation kettle raised each year.

Not only does Brown's volunteering go toward a community cause, but he said he enjoys socializing and sharing smiles and conversations with everyone who passes by.

"Somebody's gonna have a good Christmas," Brown said.

Salina Salvation Army Lt. Luke Hursh said he enjoys working with Brown for the fundraiser every year and views him as an excellent example for other volunteers for the cause.

"We are the Salvation Army, yes, but we're an extending sort of arm to that facility that has allowed us at that facility," Hursh said. "Raymond is a great example of that because every time you go in, he still has a smile on his face."

Throughout the years, Brown said he has volunteered in all conditions and prioritizes good health before each shift.

Many bell ringers often stand in cold and harsh weather, so Hursh said he encourages volunteers to wear warm coats, gloves and hats during shifts.&nbsp;

Brown said he uses "common sense" when bell ringing to stay safe.

"When it gets cold in that lobby, use common sense and get in there," Brown said. "Take ten and get warmed up."

Hursh said even though Brown reliably donates his time to the fundraiser, he also contributes cash to the significant goal each year.

This year, Salina Salvation Army set its fundraiser goal at $95,000, and on Dec. 7, they were behind.&nbsp;

"Last year at this point, we were at about $35, $40,000. This year, we're about 24,000," Hursh said.

On Dec. 21, the Salvation Army fundraised $65,000, $30,000 short of the goal.&nbsp;

Even though the last day to bell ring was Saturday, Dec. 23, Hursh said generous community members can still <a href="https://donate.salarmymokan.org/campaign/love-beyond-salina/c405410">donate to the cause online</a>.

Tips on how to dispose of and utilize Christmas trees at the end of the season

Christmas trees bring Christmas glee, but they can bring even more than that once the holiday season is past, says Kansas State University forester Charlie Barden.

“An old Christmas tree can be used to benefit birds, fish and the landscape by placing it in a corner of your deck, and spreading some birdseed nearby, or tying it to a deciduous tree or post near a bird feeder,” he said.

Christmas trees can give birds an escape from hawks or cats and keep them protected from the wind chill on cool nights. Or, Barden said, a tree can improve fish habitat and fishing by sinking it into a pond.

“The tree serves as little coral reef, in that the branches provide substrate for water plants to grow, and cover for minnows and other forms of small aquatic life,” Barden said.

Barden said sinking a tree is simple: Tie a cinder block with a short, stout rope to the base of the tree and drop it in -- with permission from the pond owner.

Christmas trees can also be allowed to dry and used as firewood. But, Barden cautions, “beware that most conifer species tend to spark and pop more than hardwoods, as resin pockets in the wood make tiny explosions.”

Another option, according to Barden: Many municipalities allow Christmas trees to be placed on the curb for pickup, then burned or ground for mulch.

Barden and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with more tips on maintaining home landscapes. Once Christmas is over, what happens to the tree?

DICKINSON COUNTY —In May, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into the distribution of meth in Herrington, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

On December 22, the sheriff's office with the assistance of Herington Police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 200 Block of South 9th Street in Herington.&nbsp; Officers found 337 grams of meth and a small amount of marijuana and other THC products.

Deputies arrested 46-year-old Sabrina Beardslee of Herington on requested charges of&nbsp; possession with intent to distribute meth, possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, no drug tax stamp and aggravated child endangerment.

National Weather Service snow totals across the state

On Dec. 26, 2004, more than 230,000 people, mostly in southern Asia, were killed by a 100-foot-high tsunami triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean.

In 1799, former President George Washington was eulogized by Col. Henry Lee as “first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

In 1865, James H. Nason of Franklin, Massachusetts, received a patent for “an improved coffee percolator.”

In 1908, Jack Johnson became the first Black boxer to win the world heavyweight championship as he defeated Canadian Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia.

In 1917, during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation authorizing the government to take over operation of the nation’s railroads.

In 1941, during World War II, Winston Churchill became the first British prime minister to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.

In 1980, Iranian television footage was broadcast in the United States showing a dozen of the American hostages sending messages to their families.

In 1990, Nancy Cruzan, a young woman in an irreversible vegetative state whose case led to a U.S. Supreme Court decision on the right to die, died at a Missouri hospital.

In 1994, French commandos stormed a hijacked Air France jetliner on the ground in Marseille, killing four Algerian hijackers and freeing 170 hostages.

In 1996, six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. (To date, the slaying remains unsolved.)

AP: Christmas around the world, throughout history

Instead of a 50-degree Christmas like anticipated, Kansas may see a wintery Christmas this year, with snow probabilities for Salina hovering at 64%.

Much cooler air than initially forecasted will arrive behind a cold front on Monday, allowing rain to change to snow across central and northern Kansas.

Christmas Day has an increasing probability of snow accumulating over northern Kansas, likely into Tuesday morning.

Road conditions may become slick, especially along and north of Interstate 70.

Christmas this year will be warmer than most, but not the warmest on record. According to Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Kelly Butler, the forecast shows a soggy and breezy holiday.

On Christmas Eve, Salina has a 50% to 60% chance of rain, which will dip to a 20% to 30% chance the next morning and throughout most of the day.

"It'll be in the upper 50s, potentially low 60s, we've got 61 officially in the forecast right now on Christmas Eve," Butler said. "That's going to come down to 52 for the high on Christmas Day. Between Christmas Eve and Christmas, we have a low in the Salina area around 40 to upper 30s."

The temperature record high for Christmas is almost 70 degrees, so this year does not depart drastically from the ordinary. Butler said average temperatures for Kansas on Christmas day hover around 40 degrees.

Butler said there is no snow in the forecast either, but temperatures on the holiday may vary a few degrees from NWS' projections.

From a balmy to possibly snowy Christmas for Kansans

Most of central Kansas received a soggy Christmas Eve, with some regions of Kansas receiving more than an inch of rain.

Salina topped at 0.75 inches of rain by 7 a.m. Sunday morning, with McPherson reaching 1.39 inches of rain.

Showers will continue throughout the day in some areas of Kansas.

DICKINSON COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is busy keeping&nbsp; roads safe during the holidays.

On social media Saturday afternoon, Trooper Ben Gardner sent a big thank you to Trooper R. Davis for ensuring safety with a crucial traffic stop. Davis stopped a motorist for driving 119mph in a 75 zone on Interstate 70 eastbound in Dickinson County.&nbsp; The total fine for the speeding violatio is $513, according to Gardner. "Slow down and make our holiday travels safe for everyone."

KHP: Driver stopped for traveling 119mph on I-70

The Saline County Commission approved multiple line items during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19, including a new RON or "Remain Overnight" flight project at the Salina Airport, a new fire truck for Rural Fire District 1 and multiple ARPA fund adjustments for 2024.

All five Saline County Commissioners were present for the final meeting of 2024 and primarily discussed significant matters for 2024. 

Commissioners began the meeting with the consent agenda, which included items like a new beverage license for Don Toros Kitchen, LLC, and three new grant agreements, which commissioners unanimously approved. 

One line item, a Saline County Health Department Development Grant contract with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, supports local efforts in hiring, recruitment, retention and organizational and infrastructure improvements.

Commissioners approved the $138,434.66 agreement 5-0.

The commission tackled six action items on Tuesday and unanimously agreed to five. Questions arose from commissioners while discussing a new air service incentive at the Salina Regional Airport.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, SkyWest Airlines operated overnight flights from Salina Regional Airport, but due to decreased demand, SkyWest ended its overnight flight agreement with Salina Regional.

The new incentive would give SkyWest a "jumpstart" for the overnight flight program to return to town. The Salina Airport Authority, Saline County and the City of Salina would provide $900,000 collectively to restart the program.

Tim Rogers, the Salina Airport Authority executive director, proposed the county grant $400,000 to the Authority for this project. The City of Salina agreed to fund $400,000 of the incentive package while the Authority would cover the last $100,000 of the proposal.

"SkyWest has indicated this is acceptable, that Salina initiates the nonstop Salina to Denver RON flight as soon as possible," Rogers said. "That flight will operate for the duration of the airline's three-year Salina-USDOTEAS contract."

Rogers said that through research done by Airport Authority Air Service Consultant Gary Foss, providing overnight flights would bring an additional 8,000 passengers to Salina Regional each year.

Joe Hay, Saline County Commissioner of District Five, commented on the proposal, raising concern for the community about SkyWest's dealings.

"I still don't see why," Hay said. "SkyWest was here — why can't we stand on our own merits and have to give somebody an incentive to return to a place that was profitable for him before?"

Hay referenced other projects that fell through with SkyWest, like a regular flight route to Houston and a SkyWest maintenance hub that the Airport Authority built incentives for, and worried that this would be another "dangling carrot" situation for the county.

The concern doesn't stem from lost faith in the Airport Authority but from SkyWest's business dealings.

"This is the third time that we've they come back," Hay said. "Now we're back trying to get it for another, so I'm sorry, I just can't support this."

Renee Duxler, the president/CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, expressed that the chamber supported the incentive.
