Hello and happy Thursday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

On Wednesday, Abilene High School officially announced that former assistant Kyle Taylor would be elevated to head boys basketball coach for the 2024-25 season.

Taylor has served as assistant boys varsity coach for the last five years, after joining Abilene as head middle school&nbsp;boys coach in 2018, and takes the reigns from Erik Graefe, who stepped down this offseason after leading the Cowboys along with Taylor, to three state tournament appearances in four years

Wednesday also saw an exciting announcement as Wildcat fans will soon get the opportunity to see their favorite student-athletes and coaches as dates have been announced for the 2024 Catbacker Tour.

The tour will kick off May 14 with stops in Salina, Great Bend and Liberal, and Head football coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman, as well as coaches and student-athletes from various sports will be in attendance during the swing through western Kansas.

And finally the Kansas Wesleyan Softball fought valiantly, but saw its season come to an end as the Coyotes dropped a pair of games at the 2024 KCAC Softball Tournament on Wednesday

The Coyotes fell 4-1 at the hands of Ottawa before being eliminated in a 7-1 loss at the hands of Tabor, finishing their season 24-20

Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau

The “I Like Ike” campaign slogan, one of the most iconic in American history, is about to be celebrated in a big way in Abilene. The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is proud to announce the launch of its latest project, the World’s Largest I Like Ike Button.

Following the success of Abilene’s&nbsp;<a href="https://abilenekansas.org/worlds-largest-belt-buckle" target="_blank">World's Largest Belt Buckle</a>, the new campaign aims to enrich visitors' experiences with an additional Eisenhower-themed "Ike Sites" attraction in downtown Abilene. The button, crafted by local artist Jason Lahr of Fluters Creek Metals Works, the same artist behind the belt buckle, will be prominently placed north of Little Ike Park. This installation will provide a unique photo opportunity and draw visitors from the belt buckle and the nearby&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/home" target="_blank">Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum</a>.

According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/nmah_1762515" target="_blank">Smithsonian Museum’s National Museum of American History</a>, the “I Like Ike” campaign was based on the nickname of Dwight Eisenhower, a five-star general who became famous not only for his military leadership but also for his presidency.

Eisenhower's role as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II made him an attractive candidate for both Republicans and Democrats in the post-war era. The campaign gained momentum with the catchy slogan, and Eisenhower won the presidency in 1952 and 1956.

“We frequently hear stories from visitors about their I Like I Buttons; there is such an affinity for the button. This year also marks the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/public-programs/commemorate-d-day" target="_blank">80th anniversary of D-Day</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/public-programs/civil-rights-conference" target="_blank">70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education</a>, and an election year, making it the perfect time to roll out this project,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This project will keep people talking about Abilene and bring more visitors downtown.”

To fund the button, the CVB is offering a limited quantity of numbered&nbsp;<a href="https://abilene-convention-visitors-bureau.square.site/shop/challenge-coin/OEXLDHLT75K3DRRFR26V3IZY?page=1&amp;limit=60&amp;sort_by=name&amp;sort_order=asc" target="_blank">I Like Ike challenge coins</a>. Priced at $34 each to celebrate the 34th President from the 34th State, these coins are available for purchase at the Abilene Visitors Center, 201 NW 2nd, or online via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.worldslargestikebutton.com/" target="_blank">www.WorldsLargestIkeButton.com</a>.

In addition to the button, visitors to Abilene will notice a series of new signs throughout the city cross-promoting various aspects of its history and attractions, including “I Like Mansions,” “I Like Local,” "I Like Cowboys,&nbsp; “I Like Trains,” and other attributes with the Ike campaign.

“This project is a celebration of Eisenhower's legacy and a testament to Abilene's commitment to promoting its history in innovative ways,” Roller Weeks added. “Abilene’s dedication to celebrating its heritage has been recognized by USA TODAY, naming us a&nbsp;<a href="https://10best.usatoday.com/awards/travel/best-historic-small-town-2024/" target="_blank">Top 10 Best Historic Small Town</a>&nbsp;for the 6th consecutive year.”

The World's Largest I Like Ike Button is scheduled to be unveiled in June, and attendees will be invited to wear their favorite Ike buttons. Additional details about the celebration will be announced soon.&nbsp;

Abilene prepares to honor its hometown leader in a BIG way

Students from around the state and region will gather at a new facility adjacent to the Abilene, Kansas Eisenhower Presidential Library campus designed for IKEducation programs.

 Senator J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) funded a matching grant of $5 Million directed to the Eisenhower Foundation for the $14 Million education facility and $1 Million in program support.

“A new facility will give more students the opportunity to take part in hands-on learning,” said Claeys. “A presidential library is a tremendous asset to the state and these educational opportunities will continue to draw more visitors to Abilene."

In 2023 over 26,000 students from 36 states and three foreign countries participated in on-site IKEducation programs at the Eisenhower Presidential Library. However, space constraints are preventing the program from growing to serve more students. A new and expanded facility will support both in-person and online programming for K-12 students and teachers.

“These funds will be leveraged to draw donor support for the facility and programs for years to come,” said Claeys. “When more visitors arrive at the presidential library campus to learn, the entire state wins."

The Eisenhower Foundation committed to raising matching funds through a capital campaign to receive the state support for the facility. The new building is expected to break ground in 2025 and open in 2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;

State Senator Claeys secures millions for new Eisenhower education facility

K-State horticulture expert shares management tips for homeowners whose trees were damaged by recent storms.

Recent storms across the Midwest left many homeowners with damaged trees from heavy wind&nbsp;and rain. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini shares tips to manage storm-damaged trees:

Not all trees should be salvaged.&nbsp;Trees with bark that has split and exposed the cambium or those where the main trunk has split are not likely to survive.

“Trees with so many broken limbs that the structure is altered may best be replaced,” Domenghini said. “Though these trees may produce new growth, they are under such extreme stress they are much more susceptible to diseases/pests and can be dangerous due to increased risk for further breaks.”

Prune broken branches to the next large branch or the trunk. Domenghini cautions against cutting branches flush with the trunk, cut to the collar area where the branch attaches to the trunk.

“Cutting flush to the trunk creates a larger wound that takes longer to heal,” Domenghini said.

Cut back large limbs progressively.&nbsp;The first cut should be made on the underside of the branch about 15 inches away from the trunk. Cut about one-third of the way through the limb.

The second cut should be made on top of the branch but about two inches further away from the trunk, creating an angle when joined with the first cut. This will cause the branch to break away.

The third cut should be made at the collar to remove the resulting stub.

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini shares tips to manage storm-damaged trees:Not all trees should be salvaged.&nbsp;Trees with bark that has split and exposed the cambium or those where the main trunk has split are not likely to survive.“Trees with so many broken limbs that the structure is altered may best be replaced,” Domenghini said. “Though these trees may produce new growth, they are under such extreme stress they are much more susceptible to diseases/pests and can be dangerous due to increased risk for further breaks.”Prune broken branches to the next large branch or the trunk. Domenghini cautions against cutting branches flush with the trunk, cut to the collar area where the branch attaches to the trunk.“Cutting flush to the trunk creates a larger wound that takes longer to heal,” Domenghini said.Cut back large limbs progressively.&nbsp;The first cut should be made on the underside of the branch about 15 inches away from the trunk. Cut about one-third of the way through the limb.The second cut should be made on top of the branch but about two inches further away from the trunk, creating an angle when joined with the first cut. This will cause the branch to break away.The third cut should be made at the collar to remove the resulting stub.Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. 🎙King in the Community — Vickee Spicer, Prairieland Market

Parkinson's disease impacts millions of families each year, and to help fund research about and combat the condition, the local Punchin'Out Parkinson's organization planned its fifth Punchin' Out Parkinson's Cinco de Mayo fundraiser at LaCurva Mexican Restaurant in town.

"This is&nbsp;our fifth year of doing it, and we just had a good relationship with LaCurva," said Punchin' Out Parkinson's founder Kallie Burgardt. "So we asked them, and they agreed, so we just held it there&nbsp;every single&nbsp;year."

LaCurva will sell tacos by the dozen for $25 at the fundraiser, with the option of carryout or delivery. Punchin' Out Parkinson's also offers a pre-order option for donors.

"There's a lot of people who, rather than buying tacos, go to our website and donate or write a check," Burgardt said.&nbsp;

Burgardt founded the 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in 2019 after the death of her grandfather, Gene Heckel, from Parkinson's.

Punchin' Out Parkinson's aims to&nbsp;not only&nbsp;fund research for fighting the disease&nbsp;but also&nbsp;improve the quality of life for those currently living with it.&nbsp;

The organization promotes and provides a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum that utilizes punching bags and intense exercise to help reduce, reverse and delay Parkinson's symptoms.

Punchin' Out Parkinson's annual Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser this Friday

Taylor has served as assistant boys varsity coach for the last five years, after joining Abilene as head middle school&nbsp;boys coach in 2018.

Before his time with the Cowboys, Taylor spent seven seasons as head boys coach at Goddard High School, and worked as an assistant at Andover Central and Riley County prior to that.

“We are pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Kyle Taylor as our new head boys basketball coach," Abilene AD Will Burton said. "We are excited for the leadership he will provide for our players both on and off the court as well as his work with programs throughout our community.”

In addition to helping lead the Cowboys to three state runs in four years, Taylor also brings in college playing experience at Kansas State, Butler County CC, and Fort Scott CC.

The Augusta native also helped lead his Orioles to a 4A state title during his playing days back in 2002.

Taylor takes the reigns from Erik Graefe, who stepped down this offseason after leading the Cowboys for the last four seasons, and coaching in Abilene for the last 18.

Salina Tech students eligible for micro-internship program A new partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce, the Kansas Board of Regents, the DeBruce Foundation and micro-internship firm Parker Dewey is aimed at helping college students gain real-world experience&nbsp;and&nbsp;get a foot in the door with potential future employers&nbsp;–&nbsp;and earn some cash.&nbsp;

"The micro-internships are for specific short-term projects or tasks an organization needs&nbsp;done," said Alisha Jester, Director of Business and Community Partnerships at Salina Tech. "Students in any of the college's programs are eligible, depending on the nature of the project. "It could be something like cleaning out and organizing a tool&nbsp;crib,&nbsp;or doing the marketing for an upcoming event," Jester said. "The Parker Dewey platform will help businesses find a student with the needed skills."

The program is open to students at any of the state's 32 public colleges and universities. "For the company, this is a low-stakes opportunity to try out a candidate and evaluate whether they're a good fit for each other," Jester said. "It's also a great option for smaller organizations that may need&nbsp;a little&nbsp;extra help but aren't ready to add a permanent position to the payroll."&nbsp;

For any given organization, the&nbsp;first two micro-internships are free; after that, businesses coordinate with Parker Dewey to set their project prices.

Last night, the cross-town rivalry between Salina South and Salina Central took place on both the diamonds, and it was a HUGE four-game sweep for the Cougars and Lady Cougars, who picked up wins of 9-6 and 7-0 on the softball diamond, and 11-4 and 17-1 on the baseball diamond.

All four games were streamed with live audio and video on Salina Post, and are now available for playback on-demand

Big news also broke out of Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday when it was announced that head mens VB coach&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5550cb47-03d8-4f6f-8898-612123b9ae83?elinkdata=9800" target="_blank">Dustin Sahlmann</a>&nbsp;was named as GPAC Coach-of-the-Year headlining KWU's 2024 list of All-GPAC selections

In just his second season, Sahlmann led the Coyotes to new program heights, finishing with their first winning season, their first home playoff game, and their first trip to the conferences final four.

And finally Following a successful 12-year NFL career that included four Pro Bowl appearances, All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl 50 title, Kansas Jayhawk Chris Harris Jr. announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday.

An undrafted free agent out of Kansas, Harris signed with the Denver Broncos in 2011 and spent his first nine seasons with the Broncos, which included four Pro Bowl appearances and the Super Bowl 50 title. Harris was named first-team All-Pro in 2016 and is a member of the 2010s NFL All-Decade team.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 1

Between 3 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, a 30-year-old Salina resident in the 2200 block of Wesley Street noticed her vehicle missing from the driveway of her home.

After phoning a few family members and friends to see if someone she knew had taken the vehicle, she found that an unknown suspect likely stole the white 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman said the victim reported the stolen vehicle to SPD officers on Tuesday, April 30.

"Not&nbsp;sure how they got it because the victim had all their keys for the vehicle," said Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman.&nbsp;"The vehicle was valued at $25,000, and there were no other distinguishing marks or damage on&nbsp;the vehicle."

Feldman said the report stated that the victim had all her vehicle keys accounted for but did not state if the Tahoe was unlocked when the unknown suspect stole it.

SPD officers continue to investigate the case. There are no suspects at this time.

Salina resident reports vehicle stolen from driveway

The City of Salina’s 16th annual E-waste Recycling Event will be held at the Berkley Family Recreational Area, 841 Markley Rd. on Saturday May 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This year we are delighted to be joined by the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to collect donations of non-perishables and personal hygiene goods.&nbsp;

E-waste is consumer electronic equipment that is obsolete and needs to be discarded properly. Computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, phones and microwaves are examples of E-waste. Recycling electronic equipment not only preserves resources like aluminum, copper, gold, silver and ferrous metals; it also diverts toxic materials like mercury, lead, and cadmium from the landfill. When electronic equipment is recycled, landfill space is also saved.&nbsp;

The event is open to Saline County residents, businesses, and organizations. Nearly any device with a cord or uses a battery will be accepted. However, there are some exceptions. To see a detailed list of items that will and will not be accepted at the event visit: <a href="https://usc-word-edit.officeapps.live.com/we/www.salina-ks.gov/ewaste" target="_blank">www.salina-ks.gov/ewaste</a>.&nbsp;

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

Depending on the job, some people may have to complete a fitness test to prove that they can complete what will be required of them to be successful.

For bulls whose job it is to breed cows, the fitness test often comes in the form of a breeding soundness exam completed by a veterinarian in the weeks ahead of pasture turnout, say the experts at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/cattle-chat-bulls-fail-breeding-exam">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said there are several components to a breeding soundness exam.

“With that exam, we make sure the bull is in good body condition and that his feet and legs are sound. We also palpate the scrotum and observe his penis to be sure it moves freely. And then we test a semen sample to assess the quality of the sperm he is producing,” Larson said.

Relating to the semen sample, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers explained what the base criteria are for the semen to pass.

That can happen for a variety of reasons, said the veterinarians.So that begs the question: What should producers do with a bull who fails the exam?“It really depends on the age of the bull and why he failed,” Lubbers said.If the bull is around 12 months of age and he fails on semen quality, Larson recommends producers retest the bull in a few weeks.“Because of the cattle breeds that we have in the U.S., I don’t expect all bulls will be fertile at 12 months of age, but by the time they are 15 months old, their age should not be a limiting factor,” Larson said.Lubbers said there are some health challenges relating to a bull’s movement that can cause him to fail on exam day, but as he recovers that should not be a barrier to him passing a future evaluation.“If he has a foot abscess, he will fail the exam but that is easy to treat and his prognosis of being able to return to breeding is good,” Lubbers said. “However, if he only has 20% normal sperm under the microscope, he may never pass.
