K-State beef cattle experts share how to best manage bulls during this season

Many people know maintaining a healthy weight is one factor in an overall health plan, and weight maintenance is also important in the well-being of cattle, according to the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute experts who spoke on this topic on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/12/08/industry-inventory-counts-winter-cow-and-bull-management-research-round-up/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

For spring-calving cow herds, oftentimes beef nutritionists are focused on maintaining the cows in an optimum body condition through gestation and into the calving season, said K-State veterinarian Bob Larson. But he stressed that it is also important to make sure the bulls are managed to maintain a healthy weight.

“In the winter, a bull’s nutritional demands are similar to those of a cow in mid-gestation,” Larson said. “Poor quality forage alone will not meet his nutritional needs and so he may need to be given some protein supplement as well.”

Along with maintaining the bull’s weight, Larson recommends that producers manage them in a way that also protects their reproductive health from the winter weather.

“If bulls have had a rough winter, we may see scrotal frostbite and poor semen quality from those animals in the spring when we do their breeding soundness exams,” Larson said.

To keep this from happening, Larson recommends producers offer the bulls protection from the wind, allow them access to dry bedding and keep them away from the mud.

For producers who are introducing new bulls into the herd this winter, Larson said it is important to follow a biosecurity plan to reduce potential disease risk.

“I recommend producers quarantine all new animals for about 30 days so that they can watch for signs of illness during that time,” Larson said. “Oftentimes if a disease is going to break, it will show up in that time.”

He also offered one additional biosecurity tip.“It is also good to institute a vaccine program to make sure both the new cattle and the ones who have been in the herd for a while are following a similar health protocol,” Larson said.

Saline County Jail Activity, Dec. 12

Submitted A 1921 oil painting by Lindsborg, KS artist Birger Sandzén was accepted into the City of Salina’s public art collection by city commissioners during the December 11 meeting.&nbsp;

The generous donation by the Karen Hale Young Family who acquired "Smoky River" from a Kansas City, MO auction house after the Salina Public Library decided to part with the painting earlier this year. Just prior to the October auction, a petition signed by over 400 individuals emphasized the local importance of retaining the Sandzén paintings and helped inspire the family to help.&nbsp;

The donors had the specific intent of honoring the women who coordinated the original purchase of the work in 1921 by contributing the Sandzén to the City's public art collection managed by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, a department of the City of Salina. They also wanted to recognize the strong commitment to the arts made by the citizens of Salina. The donors have requested that the painting be publicly displayed, acknowledging that it may not always reside in the Smoky Hill Museum.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, responsible for an extensive collection of publicly accessible art throughout the community, recognizes the unique challenges posed by the Sandzén painting. Unlike the 425+ works currently in the City's inventory, this addition requires heightened levels of insurance, security, and care.&nbsp;

The 1921 masterpiece, purchased by the library committee in July of that year, was auctioned 100 years later in "very good original untouched condition" according to the auction house condition report. The original purchasers bought the work for $150, making three $50 annual installment payments to the artist.

“Salina Arts &amp; Humanities is thrilled to be trusted with this important gift”, commented executive director Brad Anderson. “The Smoky Hill River was the catalyst for Salina’s founding and having this painting as a record and reminder of the beauty of the prairie and dedication of early citizens to the arts is an inspiration for us all.”

The painting arrived at Salina Arts &amp; Humanities for inspection in late November. Despite minor findings and recommendations for future restoration, curatorial officials from the Sandzén Memorial Gallery expressed readiness for the artwork's display. Future plans for the painting include transport to Denver-based conservation specialists within the next 12-18 months for minor restoration and reframing, with funds provided by the donor.&nbsp;

"Smoky River" will be displayed in the Smoky Hill Museum's entry gallery, providing secure access, proper lighting, environmental controls, and supervision. The museum, equipped with motion-sensitive alarms and video surveillance, assures the painting's safety. The proposed location, currently unused for permanent exhibitions, has the museum staff's approval. The museum, located at 211 W. Iron Ave, is free of charge and open Tuesday through Saturday each week.

Oil paintings are more stable than photography or works on paper allowing for less stringent humidity and UV light controls. Periodic inspections by Arts &amp; Humanities staff will ensure proper maintenance, with potential outside specialists consulted only in unique circumstances.&nbsp;

The City of Salina will receive a post-auction appraisal now that the work has been accepted. The auction price for the painting was $120,000 with an additional buyer’s premium paid to the auction house. Addressing insurance considerations, the City's risk manager has collaborated with underwriters, estimating an annual expense of $500 to insure the painting.

Birger Sandzén painting finds new home in city’s public art collection

On Dec. 12, 2015, nearly 200 nations meeting in Paris adopted the first global pact to fight climate change, calling on the world to collectively cut and then eliminate greenhouse gas pollution but imposing no sanctions on countries that didn’t do so.

The Salina Police Department responded to the Salina Regional Health Center on Friday around 1:05 a.m. for a stabbing victim. 

According to SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges, the 32-year-old victim reported that the wound resulted from an escalated argument between him and his girlfriend at the 1400 block of Cheyenne Avenue.

"During this argument, she took a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the chest," Tonniges said. "Then, he was given a ride to the hospital by her, and then she left — we were able to locate her later on in the day Friday morning."

35-year-old Erica Wroten stabbed the victim near the heart, but according to Tonniges, the emergency room staff discharged him after treating his injury.

Officers located Wroten at the 500 block of Russell Avenue and arrested her for attempted first-degree murder, domestic battery, interference with law enforcement and violating a protection order.

Salinan attempts to murder boyfriend then drives him to ER

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Honda Accord driven by&nbsp; &nbsp; Alexanderia Marie&nbsp; Bussart, 35, Salina, was northbound on Ohio Street at North Street.

The driver ran the stop light and struck the back right corner of an eastbound 2007 Ford Expedition driven by Uriel Enoc&nbsp;Ramirez Majano, 48, Salina. The impact pushed the Ford into the front bumper of a westbound 2008 Ford Expedition driven by Jesse Aaron George, 37, Bennington.

EMS transported&nbsp;Ramirez Majano to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bussart and George were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Suspicious driving led Salina Police Department officers to recover a stolen vehicle last week.

According to SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges, early Thursday at 4:20 a.m., an officer noticed a white 1999 Chevrolet Lumina driving suspiciously. After returning to the vehicle sometime later, it was unoccupied.

"He saw a subject walking away from the vehicle," Tonniges said. "It added to the officer's suspicions when it was 4:30 in the morning, and Sevijon [the subject] was wearing shorts."

Tonniges said the subject, 18-year-old Salina resident Sevijon Davis, gave officers a false name and birth date. It happened to be the name of a different subject with a warrant for arrest.

After learning Davis' true identity, officers checked the vehicle for registration and found the owner had just discovered the car's theft.

Tonniges said the car's owner believes it was stolen sometime after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from the 500 block of State Street. 

Officers arrested Davis and requested charges of interference with law enforcement and vehicle theft.

It can be difficult for teachers to come up with new thought provoking ways to keep their students engaged in the classroom. Sometimes it just takes a new set of tools.

Literature educator kits are also available providing reading discussion guides for literary classics like "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Stuart Little" and "Shiloh."&nbsp;

Once teachers <a href="https://salinapubliclibrary.org/using-the-library/get-a-library-card/educator-card/education-kit/">sign up for an educator library card,</a> teachers can create temporary classroom collections to encourage reading, check out their chosen reading items on this card.

Salina Public Library is providing educator cards that allow holds to reserve multiple copies currently in the library's collection of items. Overdue fines are not charged.

Salina Public Library providing educator kits to local teachers

The Mural at the Mill found itself in a tumultuous situation this week when the 100-foot-tall H.D. Lee Flour Mill and its three adjoining lots were listed for sale.

Wilson Realty and Auction Services listed the historic site on its website for $140,000, and according to Lonnie Wilson, the owner of Wilson Realty, the contract did not specify protection for the mural.

Even without specific protection while changing hands, the mural will likely be safe even when the property sells.

Currently, BSQUARE L.L.C. owns the iconic building and listed it for sale.

The flour mill's history spans more than a century, with H.D. Lee founding the large building and conjoining wooden structures and lots in the late 1800s.

The mill shut down permanently in 2019, and in 2021, BOOM! Salina brought artwork to the mill's looming towers, creating an iconic scene for Salina's residents and visitors.

Guido van Helten, an Australian-born artist, produced the Mural at the Mill, and according to Vortex President and CEO Travis Young, the founder of BOOM!, the mural is considered public art.

Young said that multiple court cases set a precedent for protecting public arts, and before that, the mill's current owner plans to be selective about choosing the new owner.

"We were never too nervous about it changing or anything," Young said. "The owner has it [the mural] on his mind during this process."

Though the mill may change hands soon, Young said the mural will remain an iconic part of the city.

Salina brought artwork to the mill's looming towers, creating an iconic scene for Salina's residents and visitors.Guido van Helten, an Australian-born artist, produced the Mural at the Mill, and according to Vortex President and CEO Travis Young, the founder of BOOM!, the mural is considered public art.Young said that multiple court cases set a precedent for protecting public arts, and before that, the mill's current owner plans to be selective about choosing the new owner."We were never too nervous about it changing or anything," Young said. "The owner has it [the mural] on his mind during this process."Though the mill may change hands soon, Young said the mural will remain an iconic part of the city.

Kansas Wesleyan has received a $150,000 grant from the Wilson Family Charitable Trust to launch a revolutionary, top-notch Criminal Justice lab and learning center.

“This is a game-changing moment for those in our Criminal Justice major,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “This lab will be one of the top criminal justice-focused facilities in the state, providing opportunities to our students that few in the region have. Pair that with the experience of our dedicated faculty, and it’s a great time to be a part of Kansas Wesleyan’s Criminal Justice program!”

The Jack Wilson Forensic CSI Lab and the Jack Wilson Criminal Justice Experiential Learning Center will include renovated study space and feature an elite simulator, designed to emulate situations that law enforcement officials (LEOs) could encounter in the field. This provides a safe space to practice real-life de-escalation and decision-making tactics. The simulator can also be used for other majors, including Social Work and Nursing, to practice responses in the field.

The two new spaces will be housed on the first floor of Peters Science Hall, in the same wing as the&nbsp;KWU&nbsp;Emergency Operations Center, and are expected to open early in the spring semester.

“This gift creates wonderful opportunities for our students,” said Kendra Pratt, chair of the department of criminal justice and emergency management. “Not only does it provide a great space for them to study and learn but it gives a safe space to practice real-life challenges that law enforcement officers face. We believe this enables us to better train the next generation of community LEOs.”

KWU receives grant to fund new criminal justice lab and learning center

K-State food scientist outlines safety tips for raw dough

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The holiday season can get busy, and being able to prepare yeast bread dough ahead of time and freeze it for later use could save time, said Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee.

Blakeslee said preparing and freezing yeast bread dough must go hand-in-hand with proper food safety practices.

“When making any kind of baked good, remember to wash your hands before and after handling flour and the dough,” said Blakeslee, who is coordinator of K-State’s Rapid Response Center.

“Raw flour has been linked to several foodborne illness outbreaks, so it is important to keep hands clean.”

“To save time during the holidays, or any time of the year, prepare yeast bread dough ahead of time and freeze into dough balls for rolls to bake later,” Blakeslee said. “The trick is using a dough with extra yeast because slow freezing can damage yeast.”

Blakeslee’s advice for safely freezing yeast bread dough includes these tips from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach:

- Increase the yeast by ¼ to ½ teaspoon per 3 cups of flour to your favorite bread recipe. Dough that has extra yeast can compensate for potential freeze damage.

- Use bread flour for added dough strength.

- Consider recipes high in yeast and sugar, and low in salt, which are best for freezing.

- Dough can be frozen 1) after kneading and before the first rise, or 2) after the first or second rise.

- Place dough in a freezer-safe package and freeze. Dough can be frozen up to four weeks.

- Thaw frozen dough in the refrigerator or at room temperature, shape, let rise and bake as directed.

- Cookie dough also can be prepared and frozen to save time when baking for the holidays. Some tips for freezing cookie dough include:

- Drop cookie dough can be prepared, scooped onto a cookie sheet then frozen.

- After freezing, cookie dough can be removed from the cookie sheet and stored in freezer packaging to be baked later.

- Always remember to wash your hands after handling raw cookie dough.

Blakeslee cautioned against the urge to snack on raw cookie dough, “because of the foodborne illness risks due to eating raw flour and eggs.” Instead, she said, wait until cookies are fully cooked and cooled before enjoying.

Another holiday option: Instead of freezing dough, bake the products first, allow them to cool completely then tightly wrap them and freeze. Let them thaw in the wrapping before using.

“Rewarm baked goods with a quick zap in the microwave for that just out of the oven taste,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called You Asked It! that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy. More information is also available from local extension offices in Kansas.

Holiday Tips: Save time by freezing yeast bread and cookie dough

Two teachers, Salina USD 305 Public Schools, Caleb and Lacie Stewart, skipped this year's traditional Thanksgiving celebration.&nbsp;

While friends and family cooked turkey and stuffing, the Stewarts hung Christmas lights and decorations in the Oval Office and other important White House rooms.

Dozens of volunteers visited the White House to decorate, with Stewarts' group including 15 members to decorate the Oval Office, the Vice President's Office, the Cabinet Room and the Roosevelt Room.

As fellow volunteers milled about the White House, Caleb Stewart said he noticed the camaraderie while decorating.

"We were just there to all work together to decorate the people's house for Christmas," Caleb Stewart said. "The big thing I'm taking away is that it is still possible for everyone to get along and work together toward a common goal."

The Stewarts tune in to the "HGTV White House Christmas Special" each year to watch the process of decorating the White House. This year, they decided to get involved and turned in a volunteer application in September.

The pair nervously waited for a response, and in October, HGTV and White House staff told the couple to show up on Thanksgiving week.

On Wednesday, Nov. 22, the Stewarts arrived, celebrated Thanksgiving Day in Washington, D.C., and began decorating with dozens of other volunteers.

"We started our decorating shift on Friday," Caleb Stewart said. "We decorated all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and that was 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. all those days."

The Stewarts strung twinkling lights and decorated Christmas trees throughout their assigned rooms.&nbsp;

While working, Lacie Stewart said she thought of the history of the iconic building and how she had taught her third-grade class at Schilling Elementary about it just a few weeks before.

She teaches about government and American History through a reading unit that took the students on a virtual White House and Washington, D.C. tour.

"My kids were really excited to research that and know those places, and then a month later, I was like, 'Hey guys, remember that White House picture we showed you? We're actually going in there, and I'm going to tell you all about it,'" Lacie Stewart said. "It was really cool to make that connection."

Lacie and Caleb Stewart began teaching eight years ago in Salina, with Caleb starting his career at South Middle School and then moving on to teach high school English at Salina South for the past three years.&nbsp;

Lacie Stewart began teaching at Schilling Elementary eight years ago and continues to teach third grade there.

After returning from Washington, the couple told their students of the experience, from decorating in the Roosevelt Room to shaking hands with first lady and fellow educator Jill Biden.

"The day we got back, we actually put together a little slideshow presentation of some pictures," Caleb Stewart said.&nbsp;

The White House also provided volunteers with a children's book-style booklet that explained the decorations of each room, so the Stewarts shared that with students.

Lacie Stewart said her students excitedly absorbed the information, letting friends and family know about their teacher's accomplishment.

"They had lots of questions," Lacie Stewart said. "After the initial kind of enjoyment, they really kind of thought about it like 'Wow, my teacher did do this!'"

"They were telling other students or parents, and I had a lot of parents after school ask me, 'Is it true that you really went to the White House?' and I was like, 'Your students aren't lying to you, it's true — I really did.'"

Hursh said funds raised in Salina stay in Salina.&nbsp;

"If we don't raise enough money we have to think about what we might have to cut to keep things going," Hursh said. "We don't want to cut programs. We want to expand and do more with programs like the Bravo Music and Creative Arts which provides free music lessons, or our feeding program and emergency services for those in need."
