On Tuesday a land excavator working on the construction site at Salina Regional Health Center fell through the floor and into the basement.&nbsp;

According to construction crews at the work site located at 211 W. South Street, no one was injured.&nbsp;

Salina Post asked one of the workers on site for more information regarding the accident, but no comment was given.

SRHC Director of Marketing Beth Vinson said she could not disclose the name of the construction company. Salina Post inquired with an employee at Salina Building and Neighborhood Services who said the department was unaware the accident had occurred.&nbsp;

Vinson did say demolition is still on schedule and the building is anticipated to be completely destroyed soon. Vinson said once the rubble is removed the ground will be green space with grass.

The Braddick Building, named in honor of the first hospital and nursing school superintendent Florence Braddick, was built in 1962 and housed the Asbury School of Nursing.

In 2011 the KU School of Medicine-Salina moved into the space for several years before moving to its downtown space.

Following KU's use of the space, Salina Tech’s RN Nursing Program was in the building in from 2019 to 2020.&nbsp;

Land excavator falls through floor during demolition at Salina Regional Health Center

No one expects Joe Biden to win Kansas in 2024. After all, 1964 was the last time a Democrat won the state. And before that, Kansans voted for Republicans in six straight presidential contests, including strong opposition to popular incumbent Franklin D. Roosvelt in 1940 and 1944.

However, the political monopoly is not complete. There is a center. And recent advances by Democrats illustrate its vitality.

For example, in 2020, Joe Biden’s Kansas vote share – 42% was the best by a Democrat in over 30 years. Only Michael Dukakis in 1988 – 42.5% and Jimmy Carter in 1976 – 44.9% secured higher percentages. Moreover, Biden flipped Republican counties Johnson, Shawnee, and Riley, where about a third of Kansans live. In Johnson County, Kansas’s wealthiest, Biden crushed historical margins, capturing the highest ever vote share for a Democrat at 52.7%. Johnson County’s statehouse delegation is now mostly Democrat as well.

Though Biden lost Sedgwick County, which is the state’s second largest, his 43% result was a noteworthy improvement from Clinton’s 36.3% in 2016 and Obama’s 39.4% in 2012.

Biden’s gains were in part due to centrist appeals that attracted moderates, independents, as well as significant support from wealthy Kansans.

The Governor’s office also demonstrates centrism. Starting with Robert Docking in the late 1960’s, five of the past ten governors have been Democrats and three of them won a second term. In 2022, Democrat Governor Laura Kelly secured nearly 60% of the vote in Johnson, Shawnee, and Riley counties and won a majority in Sedgwick County. Nevertheless, a certain kind of Democrat is required.

A successful Democrat runs a disciplined and balanced campaign, sticking to bread and butter issues while avoiding divisive culture war battles. Finally, rejection of the proposed state constitutional abortion amendment shows the effectiveness of a centrist approach. The abortion vote was not about Democrats and Republicans. 

Rather, abortion rights advocates separated women’s rights from conventional partisan trappings. They recast abortion as a fundamental liberty, a right of Kansans to make decisions for themselves without government intrusion. This small government personal freedom perspective expanded the pool of supporters drawing moderate Republicans and Independents. The fall 2022 Kansas Speaks opinion survey makes this clear. 

More than half – 57.5% of Kansans agreed that Kansas government should not place any regulations on the circumstances under which women can get abortions. Nearly 40% of Republicans and 56% of Independents agreed.

Likewise, 70% of Kansans agreed that women are in a better position than politicians to make their own choice about abortion. A majority of Republicans agreed as did 69% of Independents.

To be clear, Kansas is a conservative state where registered Republicans – 45% far outnumber Democrats – 26%. Recent Democrat inroads do not of course portend a thundering majority favoring Joe Biden. But it would be a mistake to ignore the successes of centrist candidates. A few years ago, while browsing through the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, I discovered a fascinating exhibit called Eisenhower’s Middle Road. Displayed prominently was Ike’s thoughts on centrism:

“The middle of the road is all the usable surface. The extremes, right and left, are in the gutters.”

So, for a moment, let’s avert our eyes from the red-blue spectacle. Now we can grasp what Kansas’s most popular and successful public figure realized. There is a middle way. And working from the middle, things can be accomplished that the extremes believe impossible.

Insight Kansas: Middle of the Road, centerist political candidates

Soft holiday music played as residents and visitors milled around tables filled with local artisan goods at the Salina Art Center Warehouse for the second Holiday Art Market.

Salina Downtown Inc. and the Salina Art Center hosted the event for 22 local vendors on Saturday, Dec. 2, allowing new, hobbyist or seasoned artisans to sell their artwork.

The market included jewelry makers, wood carvers, leather workers, ceramic artists, sculptors and visual media artists — all selling their handmade works of art.

Dex Umekubo, a local singer and guitarist, sang Christmas songs between the classic holiday radio hits.

One of the almost two dozen artisans at the market included Nicholas Pahls, the owner of NAPCraft, who uses hand tools to carve wooden spoons, boxes and decorations.

Pahls was born and raised in Salina, where he grew up alongside the city's art community. Today, he teaches first grade at Coronado Elementary.&nbsp;

While chatting with visitors to his booth, Pahls would continue carving some works in progress with a widdling knife.

"I do that so people can ask questions about the process," Pahls said. "I think if they can see what you're doing, they're a lot more interested in one — buying something but two — just knowing what you're doing."

Often, customers don't understand the process of handmade goods, which Pahls said he enjoys taking the chance to educate.

Behind the finished works displayed on the NAPCraft table, tools like chisels, small adzes and wood planes decorated his station to show customers the process of wood carving.

"My favorite part is people who ask questions about what I do," Pahls said. "When you come to something like this [the Holiday Art Market] where it's all handmade stuff, it's important for people to see what that looks like when it's getting made."

Anita Specht, a patron of the Holiday Market and neighbor to Pahls, said she enjoys seeing the community's creativity and supporting local artists.

As Specht approached Pahl's booth, he joked that she wasn't allowed to buy anything as neighbors. Specht assured him she was buying gifts for friends.

"Anita gets to hear me in my garage at 12 a.m.," Pahls said. "Anita's gifts come from her just allowing me to do that without complaining."

Specht laughed as she responded, "I don't know how he does it. Well, he doesn't complain when I don't rake my leaves."

"It's okay because I don't do it either," Pahls replied.

Specht heard about the Holiday Art Market through some friends attending the event, so she wanted to take the opportunity to support local artists.

The market allowed shoppers to find unique gifts for friends and family for the holidays, offering a memorable experience for Salina residents and visitors.

"I think it's wonderful. It opens up a lot of opportunities, especially for single people to get out and meet other folks," Specht said. "I think it makes life in Salina more pleasant and enjoyable."

Some of the vendors at the market include members of the Salina Art Center Warehouse, who visit to use ceramic and other art equipment.

Eddie Cheremond, a regular ceramic artist at the Warehouse, decided to take his hobby to the vendor stage, selling some of the artwork he made in the Warehouse.

His hobby began small, starting with the goal to make a few personal items before he became hooked on the craft.

"I wanted to replace all the bowls and cups I have at home with my own handmade," Cheremond said. "I started doing that, and it was very calming and soothing — so I kept doing it."

After replacing the store-bought ceramic items in his home and his stockpile of artwork grew, he took the opportunity to sell some of his work at the Art Market.

Salina Art Center Director of Education Darren Morawitz encouraged him to have a vendor table at the event, and Cheremond said he was glad he took the chance.&nbsp;

"Throwing, in general, for me, is a way to de-stress," Cheremond said. "To not think about anything else besides the work, for me, it's just really calming."

The Holiday Art Market concluded at 2 p.m., with the <a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/warehouse">Salina Art Center Warehouse</a> clearing for Tuesday's flow of local artists.

Salina community creativity on display at Salina Art Center Holiday Art Market

Estimates drawn from 25 years of tracking water-level, water-use

TOPEKA — The Kansas Geological Survey reported Wednesday groundwater levels in the High Plains Aquifer could be sustained for at least one decade in moisture-imperiled areas of western Kansas through pumping reductions of 18 percent to 32 percent.

The aquifer, the state’s most economically important groundwater resource, published a report summarizing regional conditions and options for prolonging life of the aquifer. The review documented benefits of voluntary water conservation in the state’s five groundwater management districts.

“Our results show that the only way to slow water-level declines is to reduce pumping in conjunction with modification of agricultural practices,” said Jim Butler, KGS senior scientist and one of the report’s co-authors. “As has been shown in Kansas and elsewhere, efficient irrigation technology must be coupled with a binding agreement to reduce pumping if we are to make a difference.”

The High Plains Aquifer underlies portions of eight states from South Dakota to Texas. It includes the Ogallala Aquifer of western Kansas and the Great Bend Prairie and Equus Beds aquifers in the south-central part of the state.

KGS, based at the University of Kansas, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture annually measure groundwater levels in 1,400 wells across the High Plains Aquifer.

Groundwater in the Ogallala portion of the aquifer, covering management districts one, three and four, dropped significantly since start of widespread irrigation of cropland in the 1940s. In some areas, less than 40 percent of the original aquifer thickness remains.

Analysis of data gathered in district one in west-central Kansas and district four in northwest Kansas show water conservation measures slowed decline in groundwater resources.

“The availability of more than 25 years’ worth of high-quality water-level and water-use data for the aquifer makes it possible to provide a sound assessment of the aquifer status,” said Donald Whittemore, KGS emeritus senior scientist and an author of the report.

In district four’s Sheridan County, the state’s first Local Enhanced Management Area realized water savings. KGS said 23 percent of the savings was attributed to irrigation efficiency with an additional 1 percent related to a decrease in irrigated area since 2013. LEMAs allow local stakeholders to develop plans to reduce irrigation pumping in a specified area.

Analysis by KGS showed a reduction in pumping in district one saved 24 percent on water consumption, with 10.5 percent associated with irrigation efficiency and 14 percent to decreases in irrigated acreage.

Wichita County, part of district one, experienced reductions in pumping of 40 percent as water levels in parts of the district fell so low large-scale irrigation was reduced or eliminated. Farmers are adjusting to the water shortage by reducing acreage, changing cropping patterns and adopting technologies to reduce water usage.

In management district three in southwest Kansas, which doesn’t have LEMAs, groundwater use since 2019 has been reduced almost 13 percent, KGS said.

In south-central Kansas, the Equus Beds aquifer in management district two has experienced stable water levels during the last 25 years. In district five in the Big Bend Prairie region, there was a slight decline in groundwater usage. The pumping reduction needed to achieve stable water levels in the fifth district is 1.6 percent, KGS said.

 </figure><h2>Estimates drawn from 25 years of tracking water-level, water-use</h2>BY:&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/tim-carpenter/">TIM CARPENTER</a> <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/">Kansas Reflector</a>TOPEKA — The Kansas Geological Survey reported Wednesday groundwater levels in the High Plains Aquifer could be sustained for at least one decade in moisture-imperiled areas of western Kansas through pumping reductions of 18 percent to 32 percent.The aquifer, the state’s most economically important groundwater resource, published a report summarizing regional conditions and options for prolonging life of the aquifer. The review documented benefits of voluntary water conservation in the state’s five groundwater management districts.“Our results show that the only way to slow water-level declines is to reduce pumping in conjunction with modification of agricultural practices,” said Jim Butler, KGS senior scientist and one of the report’s co-authors. “As has been shown in Kansas and elsewhere, efficient irrigation technology must be coupled with a binding agreement to reduce pumping if we are to make a difference.”The High Plains Aquifer underlies portions of eight states from South Dakota to Texas. It includes the Ogallala Aquifer of western Kansas and the Great Bend Prairie and Equus Beds aquifers in the south-central part of the state.KGS, based at the University of Kansas, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture annually measure groundwater levels in 1,400 wells across the High Plains Aquifer.Groundwater in the Ogallala portion of the aquifer, covering management districts one, three and four, dropped significantly since start of widespread irrigation of cropland in the 1940s. In some areas, less than 40 percent of the original aquifer thickness remains.Analysis of data gathered in district one in west-central Kansas and district four in northwest Kansas show water conservation measures slowed decline in groundwater resources.“The availability of more than 25 years’ worth of high-quality water-level and water-use data for the aquifer makes it possible to provide a sound assessment of the aquifer status,” said Donald Whittemore, KGS emeritus senior scientist and an author of the report.In district four’s Sheridan County, the state’s first Local Enhanced Management Area realized water savings. KGS said 23 percent of the savings was attributed to irrigation efficiency with an additional 1 percent related to a decrease in irrigated area since 2013. LEMAs allow local stakeholders to develop plans to reduce irrigation pumping in a specified area.Analysis by KGS showed a reduction in pumping in district one saved 24 percent on water consumption, with 10.5 percent associated with irrigation efficiency and 14 percent to decreases in irrigated acreage.Wichita County, part of district one, experienced reductions in pumping of 40 percent as water levels in parts of the district fell so low large-scale irrigation was reduced or eliminated. Farmers are adjusting to the water shortage by reducing acreage, changing cropping patterns and adopting technologies to reduce water usage.In management district three in southwest Kansas, which doesn’t have LEMAs, groundwater use since 2019 has been reduced almost 13 percent, KGS said.In south-central Kansas, the Equus Beds aquifer in management district two has experienced stable water levels during the last 25 years. In district five in the Big Bend Prairie region, there was a slight decline in groundwater usage. The pumping reduction needed to achieve stable water levels in the fifth district is 1.6 percent, KGS said.

Governor Kelly directs Flags be Flown at half-staff

The holidays are in full swing and serving platters of safely prepared food to family and friends is important for good health. Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says enjoying the meal can be dependent on a simple food safety rule: Keep cold foods cold, and hot foods hot.

One tip she recommends is using smaller serving dishes to replenish food more often.

“Warming trays, slow cookers, chaffing dishes and other gadgets can keep hot foods hot,” Blakeslee said. “Cold foods can be kept in the refrigerator until serving time or served on ice on the buffet.”

Once a serving dish is almost empty, trade it for a fresh serving dish and do not add new food to a used dish of food, Blakeslee said. She suggests keeping an eye on the clock.

“Hot or cold perishable food should be used within two hours when left at room temperature,” Blakeslee said.

Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and divide large amounts of food into smaller containers to chill quickly.

“Many family recipes may contain raw or lightly cooked eggs,” Blakeslee said. “It is risky to consume raw or undercooked eggs, especially for pregnant women, young kids, older adults and those with weakened immune systems.”

Blakeslee said to be mindful about your friends and family by safely preparing foods such as eggnog, homemade Caesar salad dressing, ice cream or other recipes with raw eggs. Heating eggs to 160 degrees Fahrenheit or using pasteurized eggs can keep away unwanted foodborne illness.

Blakeslee, who also is coordinator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>, publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on food safety.

The Central High School Theatre production of Noises Off by Michael Frayn has been selected as a mainstage production at the 2024 Kansas Thespian Festival that takes place in January in Wichita at Century II Convention Center.

Barbara Hilt, Central High School Theatre teacher and program director, said this is a high honor since there are only five productions state-wide that are selected to perform. Members of Thespian Troupe 639 will travel to the festival on January 3rd to reconstruct their two-story set in the Mary Jane Teall Theater at Century II and perform on January 4th for a packed house of other theatre students and teachers from around the state.

The Kansas Thespian Festival will be attended by over 1,700 students, teachers, and college representatives this year and will be one of the largest festivals to date. The production is directed by Hilt, and program director who is assisted by Bill Weaver, Central High School Technical Director.

Adjudication was held by Kansas Thespians utilizing a judging panel in order to determine which shows would be selected for the mainstage and out of all the schools who submitted their productions for adjudication, Central High School was selected as one of the five productions that will have a chance to perform at the festival in January.

Mustangs Central Theatre will be performing an encore performance of their production on December 29 at 7:00 p.m. patrons can come and watch their production as they prepare for the state festival and they will be accepting any donations towards their trip to help offset the cost of transporting their set and paying for meals and hotel expenses at state for the load-in day of the production. <a href="https://www.onthestage.tickets/salina-central-high-school/donate">Anyone wishing to contribute can give free-will donations at their encore performances or visit their website in order to make a donation.</a>

In a united effort to enhance safety, protect the environment, and promote responsible waste disposal practices, the City of Salina is announcing a collaborative initiative with Saline County. This joint endeavor is designed to encourage proper load securement among landfill users and includes a significant change in the landfill's tipping fee structure, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2024.

The primary goal of this initiative is to foster a culture of responsibility and safety within the community, emphasizing the importance of securing loads when transporting waste materials to the landfill. Unsecured loads can pose significant risks to public safety, contribute to littering, and harm our local environment.

Effective January 1, 2024, loads brought to the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill that are strapped or covered will be charged a tipping fee of $46 per ton, while unsecured loads will be charged a fee of $92 per ton. This change is intended to incentivize proper load securement and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

The City of Salina and Saline County are committed to fostering a safer and cleaner community for all residents. By working together, we can reduce accidents, protect our environment, and save valuable resources.

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, writer-director Justine Triet’s absorbing courtroom mystery is filled with twists and turns that keep audiences alert and guessing to the final, unforgettable scene. German-born novelist Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) is implicated in the death of her husband Samuel. At first glance, it looks like he threw himself from the third-story window of their chalet in the Alps, but an autopsy reveals a head wound delivered earlier—and a tape recording of a nasty argument between the couple provides a possible motive for murder.&nbsp;

Triet heightens the elusiveness of truth by making Sandra’s and Samuel’s blind 11-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) a key witness. Because of his limited vision, Daniel isn’t sure he’s interpreting everything that happened correctly, which parallels the audience’s uncertainty. Though the film is lengthy and largely dialogue-driven, it weaves a powerful spell that never lets our interest wane; as the investigation heads into the courtroom, more secrets and surprises are revealed. It’s not just an exercise in Hitchcockian suspense, however, as Triet also shows the devastating effect of the trial on Daniel: whether his mother is a murderer or his father a bitter suicide, his feelings about both parents are tarnished.&nbsp;

Triet also delves into the tensions tearing the marriage apart even before one partner took a literal fall. And there’s intriguing commentary on how an artist’s life becomes public property, where people feel they “know” a writer because her work contains autobiographical elements. But ultimately it’s the search for answers that makes Anatomy of a Fall&nbsp;so compelling—and the fact that we care, and want&nbsp;to know, is a tribute to Triet and her terrific ensemble, particularly Müller in a challenging, complex role, playing a character whose guilt or innocence is never completely certain until—possibly—the end.

At first glance, it looks like he threw himself from the third-story window of their chalet in the Alps, but an autopsy reveals a head wound delivered earlier—and a tape recording of a nasty argument between the couple provides a possible motive for murder.&nbsp;Triet heightens the elusiveness of truth by making Sandra’s and Samuel’s blind 11-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) a key witness. Because of his limited vision, Daniel isn’t sure he’s interpreting everything that happened correctly, which parallels the audience’s uncertainty. Though the film is lengthy and largely dialogue-driven, it weaves a powerful spell that never lets our interest wane; as the investigation heads into the courtroom, more secrets and surprises are revealed. It’s not just an exercise in Hitchcockian suspense, however, as Triet also shows the devastating effect of the trial on Daniel: whether his mother is a murderer or his father a bitter suicide, his feelings about both parents are tarnished.&nbsp;Triet also delves into the tensions tearing the marriage apart even before one partner took a literal fall. And there’s intriguing commentary on how an artist’s life becomes public property, where people feel they “know” a writer because her work contains autobiographical elements. Salina Art Center Cinema presents, 'Anatomy of a Fall' Dec. 8 - Dec. 13

Early Sunday at 3:16 a.m., Salina Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Georgetown Road and Seitz Road for a hit-and-run crash.

According to SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges, a red 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 parked on the west side of Seitz Road facing south was struck by a passing car. The caller who reported the crime did not witness the crash but saw the damage on the Dodge Ram.

After following a fluid trail from the crash scene, officers found a gold 2005 Toyota Camry.

"Officers searched the area and located the suspect vehicle," Tonniges said. "It was parked down the road in a tree line near the intersection of Melrose and Seitz."

Officers then attempted to contact the registered owner at the address listed with the vehicle's registration but learned the driver was at the Salina Regional Health Center.

There, SPD made contact with an allegedly intoxicated 21-year-old Salina resident, Kaiden Carter.

"Through their investigation, they ended up arresting him for DUI and duty of a driver to report an accident," Tonniges said. 

Through the officer's investigation, they arrested Carter for DUI and failure to report an accident.
