While many things around the Trojan boys basketball program will change next season, the last name of its head coach will not.

On Monday, Southeast of Saline officially announced that Francis Flax, long-time head coach of Brown Mackie College, would be assuming the role of head boys basketball coach at SES.

“When you can bring somebody in with the experience and knowledge that Coach Flax has you do it,” SES AD Doug Minneman said. “He has experience at all levels and he’s had success everywhere he’s been, that’s somebody that you want leading your program and we think he’s a great fit.”

In addition to bringing that experience to the role, Francis has also followed the team closely as the father of previous head coach Bryson Flax, who stepped down after an exceptional six-year run.

After a nine-year coaching stint at Highland Community College, Francis spent 23 years as head coach at Brown Mackie and 25 years as its athletic director.

He retired from both roles at the end of the 2015 season having led the Lions to 446 wins, and six trips to the NJCAA Division II national tournament including two national titles in 1995 and 2005.

All six of those teams finished in the top five nationally.

In addition to two college national titles, Coach Flax also led the Kansas Cagers professional basketball team to a championship in 2007 as part of a 7-year stint as their head coach.

Even in retirement from coaching, Flax didn’t stop bringing national acclaim to his community, helping the Salina Liberty indoor football team to four Champions Bowl appearances including a national title in 2022 as GM of the organization.

The NJCAA Basketball Hall of Famer (2008) has 612 career victories at the college level alone and will inherit a program that is coming off three straight trips to the 3A state tournament, and three straight top-four finishes.

While an opportunity to coach at a place like Southeast was certainly attractive, it was the love of coaching, and the love of the game that brought Flax out of retirement.

“I’ve got a passion for coaching and that’s still what I want to do, that's my sole reason," he said. "I’m very familiar with several of the players and I’ve followed this program for years and years. A few of my kids went to school here and Southeast has a winning culture in athletics and an outstanding reputation in academics.”

According to the Ellsworth County Highway Department, a date has not been set for the road/bridge to reopen.&nbsp;

Hello and happy Monday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fddf8aaf-5d72-4a7e-8e4f-d3f2f00727a1">On Monday, Southeast of Saline officially announced</a> that Francis Flax, long-time head coach of Brown Mackie College, would be assuming the role of head boys basketball coach at SES.

Flax is a local coaching legend here in Salina, winning two national championships as head coach with Brown Mackie, another as head coach of the Kansas Cagers, and a fourth national title as GM of the Salina Liberty.

In addition to being voted into the NJCAA basketball hall of fame in 2008, Flax has also followed the program closely as the father of Bryson Flax, who coached the team for the last six years

Over the weekend the Southeast of Saline track and field teams also posted a strong regional finish, with the boys team taking third, the girls team taking fourth, and seven individuals qualifying for state in 19 different events, including three relay teams.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — May 20

The Harvest Farmers Market will continue to offer the Double Up Food Bucks program, a healthy food incentive program that helps low-income families eat more healthy food and supports local farmers

The Harvest Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at 1325 E. Cloud Street in the Emmanuel Church parking lot.

SNAP participants who shop at the Harvest Farmers Market can swipe their EBT cards to get tokens to use for food purchases. Through the Double Up program, SNAP participants receive a matching number of Double Up Food Bucks tokens for free, up to $25 per day. This doubles the amount of dollars they can spend on healthy food at the market. 

The SNAP tokens can be used to buy any SNAP eligible items at the market, and the matching free Double Up Food Bucks tokens can be used for any fresh fruits and vegetables. The Double Up tokens can be used any time at the market through October 31, 2024 market season.

"Through the Double Up Food Bucks program, we're not just nourishing bodies, but nurturing communities. By incentivizing fresh produce purchases, we're fostering healthier eating habits, supporting local farmers, and strengthening our local economy. It's a win-win-win that's sowing the seeds of a brighter, healthier future for Salina, Kansas," said Kirsty Hartley. "The Harvest Farmers Market is a family-friendly place where people connect with the farmers who grow their food, try new foods and learn new cooking techniques, and set lifelong habits of eating and loving fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Double Up Food Bucks is funded by grants totaling 12.5-million-dollars from the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a division of the USDA in addition to generous gifts from the Kansas Health Foundation, Health Forward Foundation, the Hall Family Foundation, the Marion &amp; Henry Bloch Foundation and Blue KC. 

This year, the program is offered at more than 160 locations, including over 70 farmers markets, farm stands, and mobile markets, and 90 grocery stores throughout Kansas and Missouri.

Double Up Heartland is a collaboration led by the Mid-America Regional Council; Cultivate Kansas City; Kansas State Research &amp; Extension; West Central MO Community Action Agency; University of Missouri Extension, and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Saline County Jail Bookings, May 20

On May 20, 1927,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-travel-d3a0f4855be7419b87785c3c8309ab73">Charles Lindbergh</a>&nbsp;took off from Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York, aboard the Spirit of St. Louis on his historic solo flight to France.

According to the Salina Airport the storm moving through Salina registered speeds of 100 mph at 5:59 p.m. on May 19.

Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis said the majority of damage occurred near Brookville and in southern Saline County.&nbsp;

"Couple power lines down, some reports of limbs down, and one particular on the railroad tracks on Fourth Street," said Weis. " We called Union Pacific and let them know about that."

Weis said most of Salina did not see a disruption in their electricity. However in Brookville many residents continue to experience outages.&nbsp;

"Brookville has quite a few limbs and trees down, one of their main lines is down in the park area of brookville," Weis said. "Right now if there are people reporting lines down-please do not touch the power lines. Leave it alone."&nbsp;

Weis reminds Saline County residents that the County remains in a Flood Warning until 11:30 p.m.&nbsp;

ADDITIONAL DETAILS At 6:18 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Salina, Assaria, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, New Cambria,    Falun, Glendale, Salina Airport, Bridgeport and Kipp.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

Thunderstorm Warning issued in eastern Saline County&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Eastern Saline County in central Kansas until 6:45 p.m. CDT.

At 6:12 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line  extending from near Niles to near New Cambria to Assaria, moving  east at 30 mph.

THESE ARE DESTRUCTIVE STORMS FOR EASTERN SALINE COUNTY

HAZARD 100 mph wind gusts and golf ball size hail.

IMPACT You are in a life-threatening situation. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be destroyed. Expect considerable damage to homes and businesses. Expect extensive tree damage and power outages.

Locations impacted include Assaria, Gypsum, New Cambria, Bridgeport, and Kipp.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a severe Thunderstorm Warning for Western Dickinson County in central Kansas Southeastern Ottawa County in north central Kansas until 6:30 PM CDT.

At 5:42 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line  extending from 3 miles west of Bennington to 4 miles northwest of  Salina to 5 miles southwest of Smolan, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball size hail.

IMPACT People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Lincoln County in central Kansas Northern Ellsworth County in central Kansas until 6:00 p.m. CDT.

At 4:58 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles southwest  of Beverly, or 7 miles southeast of Lincoln, moving east at 40 mph.

HAZARD 80 mph wind gusts and two inch hail.

IMPACT Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be heavily damaged. Expect considerable damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles. Extensive tree damage and power outages are likely.

Locations impacted include Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Beverly, Barnard, and Westfall.

By MICHAEL SMITHInsight Kansas Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, MO.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things.&nbsp; To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”

If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs.&nbsp; The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals. Before the vote, nearly all publicity was on the Royals, who confused voters by&nbsp;repeatedly changing plans and venues&nbsp;for months prior to the vote.&nbsp; The opposition was led by KC Tenants, who had a&nbsp;simple message– why subsidize billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams with a regressive sales tax that falls hardest on the poor, when Kansas Citians cannot find decent, affordable housing? This problem extends well into Kansas.

Few observers believe the defeat had anything to do with Arrowhead Stadium, or the Chiefs. Arrowhead will already be the&nbsp;site of renovations&nbsp;in advance of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature games played there. For additional improvements, the Chiefs and Royals now plan to&nbsp;seek support separately. The Chiefs have a stronger case, and they wish to remain at Arrowhead.

Of course, none of this kept the hype machine from springing into action.&nbsp; Proposals came from as far away as&nbsp;San Antonio, suggesting that the Chiefs move (they have a fiercely loyal fan base here and no plans to move).&nbsp; Ignoring the caution of Governor Kelly, Kansas Legislators also leapt into the act, suggesting an&nbsp;extravagant new Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County,&nbsp;with a ludicrous plan to fund it with STAR bonds.&nbsp; Considering that the more modest Prairie Fire project in Overland Park recently&nbsp;defaulted&nbsp;on its STAR bonds, the idea that a multibillion dollar football stadium could be entirely financed this way is outrageous. Granted, Sporting Kansas City’s Children's Mercy soccer stadium in Wyandotte County was a successful STAR bonds project–but it is much smaller and only a fraction the cost of a new football stadium.&nbsp; When STAR bonds default, Kansas and/or local taxpayers are on the hook, as with Prairie Fire.

All this hype completely misses the point.&nbsp; The real story of that Jackson County vote is not about sports at all.&nbsp; It is about housing costs.

KC Tenants is a&nbsp;new group&nbsp;formed out of backlash against the KC area’s skyrocketing housing costs and substandard rental housing. Last year, they upset an establishment candidate to win a seat on the KCMO city council, and now this. The housing problem is also hitting hard in Kansas, and it is only a matter of time before KC Tenants or similar groups start popping up here. They secured a 58% “no” vote on the sports tax in Jackson County, despite being outspent by about 20 to 1.&nbsp;

Housing costs are shooting up all over Kansas.&nbsp; In the last year, they rose&nbsp;6.9% in KC,&nbsp;5.5% in Lawrence&nbsp;(where they were already high), and a&nbsp;whopping 10.9% in Wichita. In Topeka, a recent KSNT story found that housing costs have&nbsp;nearly doubled in the last two decades.&nbsp; In many places where affordable housing can still be found, it is in poor condition.&nbsp; This includes&nbsp;large swaths of rural Kansas.

Nationally, housing costs are rising&nbsp;twice as fast as wages.&nbsp; This drains money from other needs, lowers the quality of life, and worsens homelessness.&nbsp; Expect this new movement’s influence to keep spreading across both states, until policymakers start listening.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Kansas needs affordable housing, not a football stadium

On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of England’s King Henry VIII, was beheaded after being convicted of adultery.

In 1780, a mysterious darkness enveloped much of New England and part of Canada in the early afternoon.

In 1913, California Gov. Hiram Johnson signed the Webb-Hartley Law prohibiting “aliens ineligible to citizenship” from owning farm land, a measure targeting Asian immigrants, particularly Japanese.

In 1920, ten people were killed in a gun battle between coal miners, who were led by a local police chief, and a group of private security guards hired to evict them for joining a union in Matewan, a small “company town” in West Virginia.

In 1921, Congress passed, and President Warren G. Harding signed, the Emergency Quota Act, which established national quotas for immigrants.

In 1943, in his second wartime address to the U.S. Congress, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pledged his country’s full support in the fight against Japan; that evening, Churchill met with President Franklin D. Excellence in research has earned several Kansas State University students recognition through the 11th annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lib.k-state.edu/kirmser-undergraduate-research-award">Kirmser Undergraduate Research Awards</a>&nbsp;from K-State Libraries.

The awards recognize the use of library resources to complete research for projects. The awards committee, composed&nbsp;of faculty from varying disciplines, recognized outstanding undergraduate research in topics ranging from flash flooding in developing countries to the effect of production design in Indigenous film.

Grand prize awards were given in two categories: individual non-freshman and group. The individual grand prizewinners received $1,500 each, and the group grand prizewinners shared a $6,000 award. Honorable mentions were granted $100 each.

The awards are made possible through a gift from the Philip and Jeune Kirmser estate.

Both grand and honorable mention prizewinners are invited to archive their projects in the university's institutional repository, the&nbsp;<a href="https://krex.k-state.edu/home">K-State Research Exchange</a>, so they will be available online to the public.

The following students were recognized as recipients of individual grand prizes through the Kirmser Undergraduate Research Awards:

• Mandy Henshaw, master's student in interior architecture,&nbsp;Leawood, grand prize in the individual non-freshman research category for her project, "Indigenous Film: The Effect of Production Design,"&nbsp;completed in spring 2023 for the Indigenous Film class taught by Lisa Tatonetti, professor of English and Coffman Chair for University Distinguished Teaching Scholars.

• Caleb Stelk, senior&nbsp;in industrial engineering,&nbsp;Lawrence, grand prize in the individual non-freshman research category for his project, "Optimization Models for Flash Flooding in Developing Countries,"&nbsp;completed for the Written Communications for Engineers class taught by Roger Friedmann, instructor in the English department.

The grand prize in the group research category was for the project "EcoBrew Design Group: Collection and Implementation of Trüb into Animal Food Products." The project was completed for the Biological Systems Engineering Senior Design class taught by Edwin Brokesh, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering.

The group research grand prize was presented to the following students:

Caden Searcy, senior in biological systems engineering,&nbsp;Linwood; Zachary Molitor, graduate in biological systems engineering, Sydney Tumberger, senior in biological systems engineering, and Emma Worthington, senior in biological systems engineering, all from&nbsp;Overland Park.

Salina student earns award for excellence in research

Submitted Kansas Wesleyan is exploring options for adding an additional version of Casey the Coyote to its logo library and is inviting all its supporters to offer suggestions.&nbsp; Prizes are available to the contest winner, including $500 cash.

“With the recent improvements to Yotee’s, as well as a drastic increase in campus visits, we believe this is a great time to create a child-friendly, cartoon-style representation of Casey the Coyote,” said Brad Salois, assistant vice president of marketing and communications. “This item could be used on clothing, print materials and more, and can deepen the community’s connection with our beloved mascot.”

The community is invited to submit suggestions for the logo by emailing&nbsp;<a href="mailto:marcom@kwu.edu">marcom@kwu.edu</a>. In addition to the cash prize, the winner will receive season tickets to KWU’s 2024-25 men’s and women’s basketball home games. A final decision is expected on or around Oct. 1, and all entries should be submitted no later than Aug. 20.

All submissions must be complete graphic files, ready to use. KWU will not aid in the creation of any file types, nor will the university assist in turning hand-drawn submissions into graphic files. Communication regarding what is required to win this contest is at the discretion of KWU, and it should not be assumed that the university will issue rulings or responses to each entry received. KWU considers adding additional Coyote logo; holds contest for entries

On Friday, May 17, 2024, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers of the Salina Police Department responded to a call of possible shots fired in the area Santa Fe Avenue and Crawford Street.

According to a statement released by the Salina Police Department, a 47-year-old male said he was driving south on Santa Fe when a white Dodge truck nearly struck his vehicle. 

The 47-year-old male subject stopped behind the Dodge truck at the stop light of Santa Fe and Crawford. The subject exited his vehicle and approached the Dodge truck to confront the driver.&nbsp;

The driver of the Dodge truck then fires three gunshots in the direction of the subject. The subject was not struck. The Dodge truck left the area and shell casings were located in the area.

 </figure>At approximately 11:40 p.m., officers responded to the Saline County Jail, where contact was made with 23-year-old Connor Schmeck of Salina. Schmeck had been brought to the jail by family to turn himself in for the “road rage” incident.&nbsp; A handgun was recovered. Schmeck was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault and Criminal Discharge of a Weapon.The Salina Police Department wants to remind everyone to treat others with respect and compassion not only on the roadways but in general. It is important to understand “road rage” events can escalate v ery quickly. Please think before we act and consider the consequences of our actions. Do not take the law into your own hands. If you believe someone has committed a crime or traffic infraction contact your local police department so it can be investigated and handled lawfully.Those who take the law into their own hands face legal ramifications to include incarceration. Friday's incident is a reminder how quickly confronting others can turn into life threatening situation not only for those directly involved but also innocent bystanders. Fortunately no one was injured.
