<a href="https://www.salina-ks.gov/animal-services">The City of Salina Animal Shelter </a>wants to make the public aware of its current occupancy status. The shelter has 32 kennels, and 7 temporary kennels available for adoptable dogs. All of these kennels are currently occupied as of noon, Tuesday, January 02, 2024. Due to this, we are currently unable to accept any stray or surrendered dogs.

We currently have 40 dogs housed within those 39 kennels. Caring for dogs at and above capacity takes a greater effort to maintain the animal's welfare, both physically and mentally. These issues can lead to dogs being brought back to the shelter, which can create a cycle that can lead to further behavioral issues.

We would like to emphasize the dire need for adoptions, and for those who adopt to ensure they are making the right decision, and are willing to commit to any challenges as they come.

We are asking the public for their patience while we are at full capacity. We ask that people be open to the opportunity to keep found dog(s) for a period of time while we are unable to take them, but only if they feel safe doing so. If you so choose to assist, you can provide the shelter with a picture and area where the dog was found, so that information can be posted to the shelter website and/or our Facebook page. We understand that is not a possibility for every individual, but any assistance in this time would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to a generous $5,000 grant from The Greater Salina Community Foundation the Saline County Health Department is delighted to announce the reestablishment of the "Incredible Years-Parents and Babies" program.

"We are incredibly thankful to The Greater Salina Community Foundation for their generous grant, which enables us to bring back the 'Incredible Years-Parents and Babies' program," said Sherri Dockter, Maternal Child Health/Becoming a Mom® Coordinator at the Saline County Health Department. "These parenting classes have been shown to improve parent-child bonding and interactions, by building positive relationships and attachment."

This evidence-based initiative, which had previously been initiated in 2018 but was discontinued in 2019 due to staffing changes and further delayed due to the pandemic, is now set to make a triumphant return to Saline County and surrounding communities.

The "Incredible Years-Parents and Babies" program is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities for new parents and their infants. With a strong focus on fostering peer support networks and shared learning, the program equips parents with the knowledge and skills to create a loving and secure environment, nurturing their babies' physical and language development.

"Parents are the major influence on their children’s lives. Families are now under more pressure than ever before, facing an increasingly complex set of responsibilities and demands in our society today," explained Dockter. "We will be able to offer more program support through our current prenatal and postpartum services. We will be able to offer on-going case management services past the class participation end dates. Providing families with ongoing support and educational tools throughout their parenting journey is crucial."

The grant will funds will be allocated for class refreshments, developmental toys used during class, incentives for class completion, office supplies, and developmental books.

This revival aligns seamlessly with the Saline County Health Department's mission to build a healthy and equitable future for families and communities by providing education and care, supporting policy development, and growing partnerships to connect people with essential resources and services.

Incredible Years- Parents and Babies program revived with grant dollars

<a href="http://www.aimcenter.aero">The Aviation Maintenance and Innovation (AIM) Center of Excellence</a> at SLN is excited to announce that enrollment is currently open for their first cohort of students to begin classes on January 29.

The six-week pre-apprenticeship program is open to any individual, 16 years or older, who is interested in learning more about a career in aviation maintenance. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 5:30-9 p.m. on the campus of the Salina Airport Authority. This first cohort will run through March 8.

“Jobs in aviation maintenance are in demand right now here in Salina, and workers can earn a premium wage by building their skills and training in this field,” said Renee Duxler, President &amp; CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. “This pre-apprenticeship exposes students to multiple facets of the industry, and then connects them to schools, employers, and industry leaders that can help them to continue to develop their skills in the area(s) they’re most interested in.”

The course curriculum offers education and training on fundamentals and an immersive experience with four components of the aviation maintenance industry: sheet metal, paint, composites, and electronics/avionics. During the six weeks, students will also have the opportunity to earn competency-based micro-credentials for credit and certification through Kansas State University-Salina and connect with local employers and schools.

The goal of the AIM Center is to help upskill anyone who might be interested in aviation maintenance.

“This is a great opportunity for high school students, transitioning military, and underemployed or unemployed individuals who are looking for a career in an innovative and high demand industry,” Duxler said.

Another six-week cohort will open again at the end of March, and the AIM Center plans to continue to provide more opportunities to enroll in the pre-apprenticeship throughout the year.

In 2024 Rolling Hills Zoo proudly announces the celebration of its 25th Anniversary, marking a remarkable quarter-century of wildlife conservation, education, and community engagement. Commemorating this momentous milestone, the Zoo is gearing up for a yearlong celebration filled with special events and activities.

October 26, 1999, remains an unforgettable date etched in the history of Rolling Hills Zoo as the Zoo’s first 255 eager visitors streamed through the gates. It was on that date that Charlie Walker's dream became a reality, and what began as a haven for draft horses grew into Salina's inaugural zoo, and a premier regional tourist attraction in central Kansas.

Charlie Walker, a well-known Salina business man, entrepreneur and animal lover, initially erected the Main Barn to shelter his impressive collection of Belgian draft horses. The allure of these majestic creatures drew curious onlookers. As exotic animals began to join the herd, the Main Barn became a magnet for visitors. Witnessing the animals’ popularity, Charlie envisioned something more—a zoo that would captivate, engage and educate.

The journey from conception to realization was an odyssey that continued to evolve over time, including the Zoo's name, which changed numerous times after the gates opened. In honor of this memorable journey, the 25th Anniversary Celebration will feature a captivating exhibit in the Earl Bane Gallery, transporting visitors back to the Zoo's infancy —a time when dreams were woven into reality.

Rolling Hills Zoo celebrates 25 years of operation in Saline County

On Wednesday, January 3, Smoky Hill, LLC of Salina plans to make repairs at the intersection of Schilling Road and 9th Street. The concrete repair work will occur in the middle of the intersection such that the westbound lanes thru the intersection and all left turns will be restricted. Northbound, southbound and eastbound will still be allowed in a limited capacity.

The work is expected to take no more than seven days such that the intersection can be re-opened early next week, weather dependent. Speed limits will be reduced to 25 mph through the intersection for the safety of the construction crews and motorists. 

Motorists should expect significant delays and avoid the intersection altogether if possible.

The work is part of a $510,000 project, which is part of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2023 street maintenance capital improvement program.

A Salina man resisted arrest by Salina Police Department officers after injuring a 52-year-old victim with the handle of an unknown gun.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, SPD officers reported to a residence in the 400 block of South Ninth Street after a victim reported that 57-year-old Salinan Derrick Richardson had battered her and left a bleeding gash on her head.

The victim said the gunstock or handle of an unknown firearm had left the injury on her head.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, when officers arrived at the scene, they found Richardson in his vehicle outside of the residence.

"Officers attempted to take him into custody, but he did not initially comply," Feldman said. "He went into the house, the officers followed him and ended up taking him into custody after a short struggle."

SPD officers arrested Richardson and requested charges for aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery and interference with law enforcement officers.

One of my annual routines to kick off a new year is to replace our big family calendar that is posted in our mudroom and begin filling it out. Our local insurance agent provides the huge month-at-a-glance calendar every December, and it’s one of the first things I give my attention to at the start of the year.

While my family keeps a shared digital calendar we can edit and refer to on our phones, computers, watches and tablets, our big paper calendar posted on the wall also serves an important role.

My parents and grandparents always had multiple paper calendars on display in their homes. These calendars were never purchased but gifted prior to Christmas from some of the local businesses my family frequented.&nbsp;It was always exciting to flip through the calendars provided to us by our feedstore, bank, local livestock sale barn and insurance agency to see either the landscapes of nature or funny farm and ranch cartoons that had been put together in a monthly sequence.

Every bathroom and bedroom wall had a calendar on display, and there was always at least one calendar posted in the garage. Our farm truck also had a small calendar stuck either to the dashboard or the driver’s side sun visor annually. But the most important calendar was always posted in the kitchen within reach of the wall-mounted landline telephone.

That kitchen calendar was half the size of my current behemoth of a month-at-a-glance calendar, but it was always able to clearly contain all of the important information added to it.&nbsp;Birthdates, game schedules, meetings, 4-H and school events filled the pages of that kitchen calendar.

Aside from important upcoming dates to remember, notes would be added to that calendar throughout the year as well. Rain and snowfall totals were penciled in throughout the year. Additional notes of when the bulls were turned out with the cows, when a calf was born, when the cattle were moved to another pasture or when the first cutting of alfalfa was baled were also noted.

We always knew when we had planted our sweetcorn in our garden or when we had received our allotted irrigation water because it was always written down on that kitchen calendar.

It was truly a historical document that captured so much information during a given year. Both my parents and grandparents would file those kitchen calendars at the end of every year in a place that was easily accessible so they could make quick references or previous year comparisons.

I think back and wonder if that’s why, even in this digital age, I still keep a paper calendar in our house. While our calendar isn’t utilized the same as it was when I was a kid, it is still present and referred to and edited throughout the year. However, at the end of each month, the page is removed and disposed of instead of kept and filed away.

I’ve caught myself referring to photos on my cellphone to identify the dates of previous popcorn harvests. Facebook memories help me remember the dates we started harvesting wheat in different years. An app we subscribe to quickly provides rain and snowfall totals for us.&nbsp;

I often reflect on how the processes and procedures utilized by my parents and grandparents impact how I operate today. As I removed the final page of my 2023 calendar and replaced it with my 2024 calendar, I wondered if my children will eventually even utilize a displayed paper calendar in their homes based on how we utilize ours in this day and age.&nbsp;

Insight: The future of paper calendars

Oakdale Park has transformed throughout 2023, with one of its extensive renovations opening to the public on Dec. 22 — new pickleball courts.

In June 2023, the Salina City Commission agreed to accept a $470,000 donation from a group of community members &nbsp;to renovate Oakdale Park's existing tennis courts. 

Construction began in August 2023, but contractors eventually deemed the tennis court's foundation not structurally sound.

"We ended up deciding to pivot that project instead of doing an overlay," Hammond said. "We ended up demo [demolishing] all of the tennis courts at Oakdale Park and started with a fresh new foundation."

According to Salina Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hammond, the City of Salina matched some funds at $28,000 for the complete demolition of the courts.

Due to the complete demolition of the original foundation, Hammond said the department expanded the footprint and added a walking path surrounding the courts.

"If we did an overlay, we wouldn't have that opportunity," Hammond said.

Parks and Recreation completed the project only six months after the Salina City Commission approved the renovation, which Hammond said the donors are to thank for.

"We certainly appreciate the donors stepping forward and providing the funds for what they described as a gift to the community," Hammond said. "We hope to have a grand opening event sometime early spring, maybe when the weather gets a little nicer."

The pickleball courts are free to use for any community member and staff plans to only lock the courts' gates during significant community events in the park. 

Use of the courts is first come, first serve for community members.

Gridiron Glory Week 16, 17 and 18 winners announced

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW, Post 1432 received a bomb threat during its regular Bingo Night on Thursday, Dec. 28. Once Salina Police Department officers arrived on the scene, they determined there was no bomb on the premises.

SPD officers reported to VFW Post 1432 at 1108 W. Crawford St. just before 3 p.m. Thursday after 43-year-old Salinan Larry Smith, Jr. told VFW staff he had learned there was an explosive in the building.

"This was during Bingo, so there were numerous people at the building," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "The workers were concerned and contacted us — no bomb, of course, was located."

According to Feldman, officers did not locate Smith on Thursday, but due to VFW staff descriptions, officers could identify him from previous interactions.

Around 6:30 a.m. the following morning on Friday, Dec. 29, Feldman said while officers arrived to work at SPD, they spotted Smith walking near West Elm Street.

"An officer was preparing for a shift when out back here at the police department, they observed him and made contact with him," Feldman said. "As they attempted to place him in custody for criminal threat, he took off running."

The officers pursued Smith, and when they caught up to arrest him, Smith struck an officer on the head in two places and bit another.

Officers arrested Smith after the short struggle and requested charges for criminal threat, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, simple battery on a law enforcement officer, and interference with law enforcement officers.

The Century Farm program honors Farm Bureau members who have owned farms of at least 80 acres within the same family for 100 years or more. The Sesquicentennial Farm recognition goes to farms in the same family for at least 150 years.

Love N’ Learn Early Childhood Center (LNL), located on the Salina Catholic Schools campus has been a leader in Saline County child care services for over 30 years and is pleased to announce the hiring of

Jessica Jacobs as new LNL Director. We also welcome Melissa Smith as Interim Director.

With the renovation of LNL beginning in January, applications are now open for the opening of the center in August 2024.

Jessica has spent the majority of her teaching career at St. Mary’s Grade School, having taught fourth grade, second grade, and kindergarten. She has also worked with children during their early childhood years while employed as an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Family Service Coordinator, at Infant Child Development.

“I am incredibly honored to take on the role of Director for LNL. We have a long history of providing high quality child care, creating a strong foundation for children of Salina Catholic Schools. I look forward to upholding and honoring the current program and traditions, while working with Melissa and Olinda to usher in ideas for growth alongside the anticipated renovations," Jacobs said.

LNL will launch a new era of child care on our campus in August as we expand our programming to infant care in an updated, modern facility. The facility renovation will allow our team to help address the child care deficit in our area. This allows families a unique opportunity to have consistent care for their children throughout their early years.

Melissa’s career in Early Childhood began in the LNL building nearly 15 years ago. She has most recently been an educator in the Preschool classrooms at St. Mary’s Grade School. Her familiarity with the traditions and values of the campus will aid her smooth transition back into the LNL facility.

“The fantastic support from my mom, Olinda Power, has built my confidence and support for my decision in seeking out this position. I look forward to the support of working with the current Early Childhood Educators in the LNL building. I believe with this move we will be able to form ample opportunities for growth in our community, plus opportunities for growth with our families. I can not wait for the chance to work with the staff, and Jessica on this exciting journey for our school and community," Smith said.&nbsp;
