Updating urban boundary, animal services study session, on Salina City Comm. Sept. 9 agenda

Bacterial pneumonia and sepsis are leading causes of hospitalization and death. Researchers in Kansas State University's Division of Biology have discovered that dysfunction of the body's immune response to bacterial infection may be part of the problem.

Pankaj Baral, assistant professor of biology, and Prabhu Raj Joshi, doctoral student in microbiology, are studying how nervous and immune system crosstalk, or bilateral signaling, impacts the body's ability to fight pneumonia caused by the Gram-negative bacteria known as carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, or CRKP.

The researchers published their study, "Lung-innervating nociceptor sensory neurons promote pneumonic sepsis during carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae lung infection," in Science Advances, a member of the Science family of journals.

CRKP bacteria are the most common cause of hospital-acquired lung infections and are a major contributor to fatal pneumonia-induced sepsis, or pneumonic sepsis, among hospitalized patients. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers CRKP and other Gram-negative bacteria an urgent public health threat and states that an alternative non-antibiotic treatment for Gram-negative pneumonia and pneumonic sepsis is essential.

Baral and Joshi's study investigated the role of neuroimmune signaling in bacterial pneumonia, focusing on lung-innervating nociceptor sensory neurons — neurons that mediate pain — during lung infection with CRKP.

Normally, the sensory nervous system protects the body by sensing and responding to noxious stimuli. However, the study showed that during lung infection by CRKP, the sensory nervous system is detrimental, and lung-innervating sensory neurons, meant to defend against pneumonia and sepsis, seem to be the culprit.

"Our study showed that nociceptor activation and pain sensations, normally considered critical defense mechanisms, actually enhance CRKP infection and pneumonia lethality," said Joshi. "So, we think that CRKP might employ nociceptor neuron activation to establish infection and cause severe disease such as sepsis."

This discovery could help scientists develop a non-antibiotic sepsis treatment that targets nociceptor neurons or blocks their receptor signaling pathways.

In fact, the team is collaborating with researchers at the University of Kansas to perform high-throughput screening of small molecules to identify the most potent chemical inhibitors of nociceptor signaling for use as a therapeutic treatment for Gram-negative pneumonia and sepsis.

Baral's research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association and Kansas State University's Johnson Cancer Research Center.

School district officials say the survey will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges and other important issues.

“This survey lets us hear from a range of patrons about our performance and various issues,” said Linn Exline, USD 305 superintendent. “We’ll gather insights from all parts of the district, across age groups, from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The phone survey was designed by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm that has worked with school districts across the Midwest.

The calling will be done by Market Research Associates, a Kansas City firm, which uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the district’s website. The online surveys will be open from September 7 through 12 a.m. on September 21.&nbsp;

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete, and the district is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.

Salina Public Schools begins patron survey

Child safety advocates at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City are urging parents to be cautious of purchasing car seats online, warning that they’ve seen a rise in the number of parents unknowingly buying counterfeit car seats.

Many counterfeit car seats — though they may appear legitimate at first glance —&nbsp;don’t meet U.S. safety standards and often lack crucial safety features that protect children in car crashes. Advocates worry that using these car seats could be putting children’s lives at risk.

“It’s hard to tell a car seat is counterfeit from a small picture online, and many parents think they found a great deal from a major retailer,” said Michelle Jamison, community health program manager at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. “Once they realize there’s a problem and try to return it, the site they got it from has already been taken down.”

Hospital officials warned that even though car seats purchased online can be “enticing” because of their discounts, “what often confuses parents is that these seats are found on the websites of major national retailers through third-party sellers.”

For years, Primary Children’s Hospital has offered in-person and virtual car seat checks to help parents learn how to properly install and use car seats. It’s during these checks where caregivers have started noticing more counterfeit car seats pop up, Jamison said.

“The counterfeit car seats that Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital caregivers are seeing look legitimate and can cost hundreds of dollars,” the news release said. “But many of these are missing key components that keep children safe in a crash, and they worry that using these seats could have deadly consequences.”

Jilian Davis is one parent who learned she had a counterfeit car seat from Primary Children’s.

A family member gifted Davis the car seat, which was purchased online. After giving birth in June, Davis’ daughter spent two weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Intermountain LDS Hospital and Primary Children’s before she went home. As they were preparing to leave the hospital, a car seat tech assisting them realized the car seat was counterfeit, according to hospital officials.

“It’s completely shocking because this is my fourth child and I’ve never heard of this being an issue,” Davis said in a prepared statement. “It’s scary to think I could have been driving around with my child in a car seat that’s dangerous.”

Primary Children’s gave Davis a car seat to use, but now Davis said she wants to warn other parents and family members who might not know better.

How do you know if a car seat is counterfeit?

“Experts say the best way to avoid counterfeit car seats is to buy directly from the manufacturer’s website or go to a store in person to purchase the seat,” Primary Children’s officials said. “All these models will be legitimate and meet safety standards.”

While online discounts are tempting, Jamison said it’s worth paying the extra money to ensure your children’s safety.

“Parents may think an in-store purchase is more expensive but what they’re really getting is the peace of mind their child’s car seat is safe,” Jamison said. “While some models are pricey, there are less expensive ones that are still crash tested and safe.”

To adhere to federal safety standards, all car seats must have the following:

“Counterfeit car seats are often missing the labels, or they’re written in another language,” hospital officials said. “Sometimes these labels have grammatical errors, and the wording doesn’t make sense.”

Jamison urged parents to check their car seats. If they discover they may be counterfeit or not adhere to U.S. safety standards, “stop using it immediately and contact the retailer to notify them that they sold a counterfeit car seat,” Jamison said.

“You may be able to recover the cost of the seat if you used a credit card or purchased through a major retailer,” she added.

Parents can report counterfeit car seats through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stopfakes.gov/welcome" target="_blank">STOPfakes.gov</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats" target="_blank">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration</a>&nbsp;(NHTSA) or the U.S. Department of Commerce via their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usa.gov/agencies/u-s-department-of-commerce" target="_blank">contact form</a>.

Hospital officials also encouraged parents to submit a report through their state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usa.gov/state-consumer" target="_blank">consumer protection</a>&nbsp;agency.

Parents needing help with their car seat can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats#installation-help-inspection" target="_blank">find a technician</a>&nbsp;in their area. They can also call Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital to book a virtual or in-person car seat check at 801-662-CARS.

Advocates worry that using these car seats could be putting children’s lives at risk.“It’s hard to tell a car seat is counterfeit from a small picture online, and many parents think they found a great deal from a major retailer,” said Michelle Jamison, community health program manager at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. “Once they realize there’s a problem and try to return it, the site they got it from has already been taken down.”Hospital officials warned that even though car seats purchased online can be “enticing” because of their discounts, “what often confuses parents is that these seats are found on the websites of major national retailers through third-party sellers.”For years, Primary Children’s Hospital has offered in-person and virtual car seat checks to help parents learn how to properly install and use car seats. It’s during these checks where caregivers have started noticing more counterfeit car seats pop up, Jamison said.“The counterfeit car seats that Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital caregivers are seeing look legitimate and can cost hundreds of dollars,” the news release said. “But many of these are missing key components that keep children safe in a crash, and they worry that using these seats could have deadly consequences.”Jilian Davis is one parent who learned she had a counterfeit car seat from Primary Children’s.A family member gifted Davis the car seat, which was purchased online. After giving birth in June, Davis’ daughter spent two weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Intermountain LDS Hospital and Primary Children’s before she went home. As they were preparing to leave the hospital, a car seat tech assisting them realized the car seat was counterfeit, according to hospital officials.“It’s completely shocking because this is my fourth child and I’ve never heard of this being an issue,” Davis said in a prepared statement. “It’s scary to think I could have been driving around with my child in a car seat that’s dangerous.”Primary Children’s gave Davis a car seat to use, but now Davis said she wants to warn other parents and family members who might not know better.<h2>How do you know if a car seat is counterfeit?</h2>“Experts say the best way to avoid counterfeit car seats is to buy directly from the manufacturer’s website or go to a store in person to purchase the seat,” Primary Children’s officials said. “All these models will be legitimate and meet safety standards.”While online discounts are tempting, Jamison said it’s worth paying the extra money to ensure your children’s safety.“Parents may think an in-store purchase is more expensive but what they’re really getting is the peace of mind their child’s car seat is safe,” Jamison said. “While some models are pricey, there are less expensive ones that are still crash tested and safe.”To adhere to federal safety standards, all car seats must have the following:<ul>
 <li>A manufacturer’s label, which includes the name of the car seat, date of manufacture, branding, model number, and expiration date. This information is used to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.safekids.org/other-resource/register-your-car-seat" target="_blank">register your car seat</a>, which allows manufacturers to notify you of any recalls. Counterfeit car seats don’t have the model number, making them ineligible to register.</li><li>Warning labels written in both English and Spanish. They’re found on the back of the car seat, and are also required in the area where the baby’s head rests near the top of the seat.</li><li>A chest clip. Chest clips are required in the U.S., but not other countries, which is why counterfeit car seats usually don’t have them.</li>
 </ul>“Counterfeit car seats are often missing the labels, or they’re written in another language,” hospital officials said. “Sometimes these labels have grammatical errors, and the wording doesn’t make sense.”Jamison urged parents to check their car seats. If they discover they may be counterfeit or not adhere to U.S. safety standards, “stop using it immediately and contact the retailer to notify them that they sold a counterfeit car seat,” Jamison said.“You may be able to recover the cost of the seat if you used a credit card or purchased through a major retailer,” she added.Parents can report counterfeit car seats through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stopfakes.gov/welcome" target="_blank">STOPfakes.gov</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats" target="_blank">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration</a>&nbsp;(NHTSA) or the U.S. Department of Commerce via their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usa.gov/agencies/u-s-department-of-commerce" target="_blank">contact form</a>.Hospital officials also encouraged parents to submit a report through their state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usa.gov/state-consumer" target="_blank">consumer protection</a>&nbsp;agency.Parents needing help with their car seat can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats#installation-help-inspection" target="_blank">find a technician</a>&nbsp;in their area. By SALINA POST Salina Police Department (SPD) Officers arrested a man after a rooftop break-in on Thursday, September 5 in Salina.&nbsp;

SPD Officers responded to a home on North Second Street at 5:36 p.m. after a Salina homeowner reported hearing strange noises coming from his roof.

When he went outside to investigate, he found a man, later identified as 32-year-old Ricardo Adolfo Lopez Garcia, attempting to break in through the second-floor vents.&nbsp; Garcia gained access to the second story using the homeowner’s ladder.&nbsp;

“We show up and we're telling the guy ‘Get down off the roof,’” SPD. Cpt. David Villanueva said. “The resident has no idea who this guy is. He had never seen him before.”

Garcia failed to comply with officers and began ripping at the home’s exterior vents, and some siding. “The officers say to the homeowner, ‘Can we go get him? The resident says, ‘Yes, of course, go get him,’” Villanueva said. “One officer went in there tried to get this guy into custody. He started to fight the officer.”

A second officer entered the residence. &nbsp;“He struck one of the officers in the leg and head butted another," Villanueva said.

Police eventually restrained Garcia using a body wrap.

The house sustained approximately $2,500 worth of damage, including damage to the siding and a satellite dish.

Garcia was taken to the hospital for evaluation, where he allegedly made threatening comments to staff, leading to additional charges of disorderly conduct.&nbsp;

In total, he faces charges of aggravated burglary, battery of law enforcement officers, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct.

Villanueva said neither officer required medical services.&nbsp;

910 KINA Sports Headlines — September 6

Current and future residents of Salina Presbyterian Manor have a lot to look forward to. An expansion to grow, beautify, and upgrade the manor has entered a new phase, and it requires the support of the Saline County community.

<a href="https://www.presbyterianmanors.org/communities/salina-presbyterian-manor/">Salina Presbyterian Manor</a> has received a generous grant of $1 million from the <a href="https://mabeefoundation.com/">Mabee Foundation</a>, out of Tulsa, Okla. It is a “challenge grant,” contingent on the community meeting its fundraising goal. That’s why the manor is asking for your help.

The manor has a strong reputation for quality services and is the market leader as the only Life Plan community in the Salina area, offering a continuum of living options and health services. It’s already a beloved community – by residents, their families, and staff members alike.


“Moving to Salina Presbyterian Manor is the best choice I’ve ever made,” says Amy Hoffman who’s been living at the manor for 17 years. “I adore where I live now and the staff is so kind, loving, warm, and capable.”

The expansion began with Phase One in 2022 with 29 new villas, custom-built for vibrant and independent older adults. Now, the community is raising $10 million for Phase Two through its “Preserving Legacies, Enriching Lives” campaign to renovate the campus, which has not had a major update in more than a decade.


This phase will give the community a facelift with a new entrance, a redesigned lobby and welcome center. It will also give residents more dining choices, with a new dining room offering chef-curated menus, a bistro for lighter meals, and a cocktail lounge for residents to gather.

Wellness is also at the core of life at the manor. A state-of-the-art wellness center will include a new pool with aquatic classes and rehab, new exercise equipment, new locker rooms and a new space for professionally trained staff and therapists to work with residents on site.

“This would be a dream come true,” said Lisa Anderson, a long-time employee. “I love that there will be more options for our rehab residents to exercise. These updates will most definitely increase the quality of life for our residents and our guests.”

Finally, offices will be updated to better accommodate employees and guests, and a new multi-purpose room will help residents and visitors enjoy educational events, games, and other special occasions.

“I would be so proud to see the manor keep up with the times,” says Hoffman. “It would certainly enrich our lives to have these updates that we’ve needed for a long time. I’m proud of the leadership team taking such interest in improving our already wonderful home.”

Residents, their families, friends, and supporters of Salina Presbyterian Manor have already helped the community raise $4.1 million. “Gifts have ranged from $50 to $1 million,” says Jenni Jones, Director of Giving. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors and so grateful to each and every one of them.”&nbsp;

And the clock is ticking. To receive the $1 million grant from the Mabee Foundation, the fundraising campaign must raise $2.3 million by July 2025.

Salina Presbyterian Manor — investing in senior living

Salina residents will have the opportunity to breathe new life into their broken belongings at the Repair Café set to take place on Saturday, September 7. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the <a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/fallclasses">Salina Art Center Warehouse</a>, located at 149 South Fourth Street.

The Repair Café is a community-focused initiative where skilled volunteers offer their expertise to fix a variety of items. Whether it's electrical repairs, flat tires on bikes, jewelry mending, sewing projects, book binding, or small woodworking tasks, volunteers are ready to assist with quick fixes.

The Art Center Wearhouse held its first Repair Cafe event in April. Salina Art Center Education Director, Darren Morawitz, who will repair wooden items at the Repair Cafe said his joy of fixing things began back when he was a kid on the farm.

" I grew up on a farm in Hutchison. It was a small farm, but definitely my dad and both my grandfathers never wanted to call a repairman if they could help it," Morawitz said. "I was the only one who could crawl in the crawl spaces. So I grew up at a young age doing all the plumbing."

Morawitz said he feels uniquely cathartic after he helps someone by repairing an item. He talked about fixing a woman's suitcase back in April.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We repaired a suitcase that had a wheel broken on it and she admitted to that if we couldn't fix it, it was like a $20 suitcase, like she got from Goodwill or something. But we did fix it," Morawitz said.&nbsp;"Art is just problem-solving. That is all it is creative problem solving. So this is just a different form of art — the art of repair."

In addition to repairing household items, the event offers a special activity for children. Kids are encouraged to bring their broken crayons, which will be melted down and transformed into new ones that they can use again.

 The event is made possible through the generous support of dedicated volunteers and partnerships with The Salina Public Library, the Art Center Warehouse, The Kansas Wesleyan University Community Resiliency Hub, and North Salina Community Development.&nbsp;

Morawitz explained that only small and medium-sized items can be brought to the Repair Cafe, so please make sure items can be held in your hands.&nbsp;

The Yotes (0-1) will be in search of a bounce back on Saturday, September 7 at 11am when they take on Bethany in Lindsborg. As always, the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM/107.5 FM) with Tyler Henry and Brooks Garretson on the call.

In recognition of this importance, KWU is proud to announce the Saline County MBA Scholarship, which will launch this spring.&nbsp; Students with either Saline County employment or a Saline County home address will receive $100 off per class, reducing the total cost of the program to around $13,000.&nbsp;

“Salina and the greater Saline County area have always been an important part of Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “This is a way for us to both give back and raise the area up, all by making a graduate degree even more accessible. By bettering the local business community, we can help build connections for our students, we can increase awareness of Kansas Wesleyan’s academic prowess and we can make our community an even better place. We’re looking forward to seeing the results of this scholarship in years to come.”

The Saline County MBA Scholarship will be for students enrolling in the spring and fall of 2025 and the spring and fall of 2026, after which time the program will be evaluated. A form proving residency or employment will be required.&nbsp;

Stolen paint sprayer this week’s Crimestoppers

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman Heritage Museum is proud to announce their ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the Inman Harvest Mural on September 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. near the Inman Grain Elevator. This event marks a significant milestone in the celebration of the town's rich agricultural heritage.

The 108 ft. tall mural, beautifully painted by Kansas-artist, Mindy Allen, of Mindy's Murals, serves a dual purpose: to honor Inman’s strong history in custom cutting and to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of Turkey Red Wheat, which was brought to the United States by German-Russian immigrants in 1874. This wheat variety has played a pivotal role in Kansas' agricultural success and helped to grow Inman as the Custom-Cutting Capitol of Kansas, making this mural a powerful tribute to both the past and the present.

Mindy Allen will speak at the ceremony, providing insights into her artistic process and the inspiration behind the mural. The event will also feature guest speaker, Trisha Purdon, Kansas Office of Rural Prosperity Director, and other guest speakers.

"We are thrilled to unveil this mural, which not only celebrates the agricultural roots of Inman but also serves as a symbol of our Inman’s enduring spirit," said Ron Regehr, Inman Board Member. "This event is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our heritage and to look forward to the continued sharing of our history with all generations.

Inman mural ribbon-cutting September 13

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss says struggles in agriculture have pushed themselves over into his manufacturing survey, as well.&nbsp;

"This, of course, is a survey of manufacturing supply managers in nine, what we call the mid America states, which includes Kansas," Goss said. "The overall reading was below growth neutral for the month. That's the month of August. And this is the fourth time in this year."

Economic optimism is low in this month's survey.

"Approximately 35% see a recession as the number one challenge to their business, and that's even with a rate cut from the federal reserve, which is almost a hundred percent likely on September the 18th," Goss said. "Now the question becomes, is it a quarter percent cut or is it a half percent cut?"

Goss thinks they might consider a half percent cut if the jobs report is bad enough, but he actually noted that rate cuts have not historically held off recessions.&nbsp;

"Every recession since the 1950s, every one of those recessions has been preceded by significant rate cuts by the federal reserve," Goss said. "Back in the last time we had a deep recession back in 2008 and nine, the fed began cutting rates to near zero and launching new programs to stimulate growth, what we call quantitative easing. That was a mistake on their part then, and it's a mistake now."

Goss said that whatever the Fed chooses to do later this month likely will not have a meaningful effect between now and the November election.

Goss: Survey sees manufacturing struggles

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to a multiple-vehicle crash late Wednesday morning in South Salina.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Ohio Street near the intersection with Cloud Street.

According to preliminary information provided by SPD Cpt. James Feldman, the crash was initially reported as a possible injury accident. However, one of the vehicles involved had airbag deployment without any reported injuries.

According to Feldman, the report is still being finalized but there were no injuries reported.&nbsp;

SPD directed traffic as the vehicles were loaded onto a tow truck and removed from the roadway.

The Salina Family YMCA board of directors announced Thursday that Chris Lehecka has been selected as the organization’s new president and chief executive officer, effective September 1st, 2024.

Lehecka, who has served as the Salina Family YMCA’s Associate Executive Director since September 2023, will succeed president and CEO Angie Lassley, who accepted a new role as COO at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in July.

In a statement, board members said they believe Lehecka’s experience in fundraising efforts, commitment&nbsp;the YMCA’s mission, and his community engagement will help elevate the YMCA’s relevancy and value in the Salina region.

“I believe that the YMCA is getting a young man that can lead the organization into the future. He comes with tremendous drive and a huge heart for the people we serve,” said Pastor Allen Smith, chair of the Salina YMCA’s board of directors. “Chris is one of the up-and-coming stars of our community.”

Lehecka received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in Sociology/Criminology and earned a Masters of Professional Studies degree in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State University. 

Before joining the Salina Family YMCA, he worked at the Greater Salina Community Foundation, where he engaged with donors and organizations to support community initiatives. Lehecka also has a diverse background in basketball, including coaching high school and collegiate women’s teams, with experience at Kansas Wesleyan University and Brown Mackie College. He continues to stay involved in the sport by officiating games in the evenings with Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA).

Lehecka explains that while growing up, the Wichita YMCA was an important part of his development and values and hopes to continue that trend. 

“I am deeply passionate about developing people and teams, and I thrive on helping individuals and groups reach their full potential. At the YMCA, this passion aligns perfectly with our mission to promote a healthy spirit, mind, and body” Lehecka said, “I am truly honored and grateful to be offered the CEO position. The support from our staff, members, and the board inspires me to embrace any challenge and serve to advance our mission of nurturing holistic well-being through Christian values at the YMCA.”

He is married to Tawni and is the proud father of three children: Skylar (9), Cooper (7), and Sydney (2).

Salina YMCA announces Lehecka as next president & CEO

The National Science Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to researchers at three U.S. universities to further advance a Kansas State University project that hopes to conserve one of nature's most important pollinators.

K-State entomologist Brian Spiesman launched the website BeeMachine.ai and a mobile app in 2020 to help track trends in bee populations across the world.

Spiesman said a recent update substantially improves users' ability to contribute to the citizen science effort and communicate their sightings. The update was funded by a K-State Game-changing Research Initiation Program for exploratory research, or GRIPex, award for nearly $250,000. The NSF grant will allow the researchers to continue that work.

"We are now able to identify 354 types of bees from around the world, and this number will continue to grow as we develop our image data set with the NSF project to include more types of bees," Spiesman said.

There are an estimated 4,000 bee species in North America alone and more than 20,000 worldwide. According to Spiesman, BeeMachine.ai currently contains tens of thousands of images of bees submitted from mobile app and website users.

Bees are considered one of the world's most vital pollinators. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reports that nearly three-quarters of the world's food crops depend, at least in part, on pollination. The organization also reports that pollination has the potential to increase agricultural yields and quality worldwide.

Among the hundreds of foods that rely on pollination during development are apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, potatoes, vanilla, almonds, chocolate, coffee, canola, tomatoes, grapes, avocados and many more.

Spiesman added that animals also pollinate close to 90% of the world's flowering plant species.

"It is important to remember that there are more than 20,000 kinds of bees, and many of them are facing declines because of the interacting effects of habitat loss, climate change, overuse of pesticides, and invasive or noninvasive species," Spiesman said. "This great diversity of bees is one of the reasons it is so important to be able to identify the different species so we can establish which are in decline and develop effective conservation strategies."

Since the launch of BeeMachine.ai four years ago, 4,000 users have contributed more than 14,000 sightings from all continents except Antarctica. However, to fully unleash the power of artificial intelligence technology, more images and information are needed.

Spiesman said KU has more than 500,000 bee specimens that can be added to BeeMachine; Wisconsin has several thousand, as well."K-State will use NSF funds to support personnel who can conduct imaging, which will allow us to continue existing partnerships with other groups, such as USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Logan, Utah, which holds more than one million bee specimens," Spiesman said.He added that the collections from the KU and Wisconsin are curated specimens."We know what species they are and just need to image them for training our models," Spiesman said. "We hope to be able to add most of the 4,000 bee species in North America plus many other species in other parts of the world to our algorithm, and all of the more than 425 bee genera in the world."Currently, Spiesman said conservationists don't have a full understanding of the extent to which bees and other critical insects are in decline, and why."We first need to understand the problem before we can take effective action," he said. "This project will be important for empowering people with the ability to help us gather the kind of data we need to enact effective conservation."
