WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;– U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) – members of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee – introduced the&nbsp;Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancements Act&nbsp;to improve memorialization and burial benefits for veterans and their families.

This legislation would establish a nonprofit entity that would be able to accept private donations to be used to fund the Veterans Legacy Program (VLP). VLP issues grants to educational partners to conduct historical research projects on veterans buried in national cemeteries in their communities to then share those veteran stories through educational programming. This legislation would also make certain veteran burials are dignified and honorable, while also enhancing current burial benefits for dependents and historical Medal of Honor recipients.

“How we memorialize and honor our veterans, when they have passed, sends a message to their families, our servicemembers and the country that we value the sacrifice or our military men and women even as the years pass,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“The Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancement Act would help ensure dignified interment and memorialization in our national cemeteries for veterans and their families, while honoring their service and telling their stories for generations to come.”

“At the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, alone, there are more than 50,000 veterans laid to rest,”&nbsp;said Sen. Hirono.&nbsp;“These veterans have unique, but too often untold stories—stories that deserve to be shared now and into the future. Among other things, the Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancements Act will help to ensure those stories are told and preserved, enabling people across the country to better honor the memory of our veterans and their service.”

The pickup pulled into the path of a westbound 1987 Mack Dump Truck driven by Michael T.&nbsp;Haney, 56, Salina. After impact both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch.

EMS transported Lyne, Michael Haney and a passenger in the dump truck&nbsp; Peter C. Haney, Jr. 59, Minneapolis, to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; All there were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

What began as rescuing lost bees that tumbled from passing through semi-trailers transformed into a state-wide business for Allen and Judy Stovall, owners of <a href="https://ajhoneyfarms.com/">AJ Honey Farms, LLC</a>.

When most residents hear about "beekeeping," they first think of swaths of hives with workers buzzing about clad in white suits and puffing smoke between frames of combs. However, beekeeping is a much larger profession than just honey collection.

Allen Stovall began the profession in 2016 by saving lost bee swarms from truck stop canopies and relocating them to his and Judy Stovall's, his wife's, backyard apiary.

Judy Stovall completed the store's name, AJ Honey Farms, with her essential role established from day one.

After they collected some backyard hives, the Stovalls contacted The Land Institute to investigate honeybee research and conservation.

"They were looking for somebody to do research with bees, so our first 10 hives we went out to there [The Land Institute property], and they wanted to do silphium flowers, so that's how it started."

Today, Allen and Judy Stovall work toward not only providing raw local honey to the community but also educating and providing tools for those looking to begin their own apiaries.

"A customer gets so excited because their bees made it or he's helped them," said co-owner Judy Stovall. "At the end of the day, we want to help people because we need to have more bees."

AJ Honey Farms provides prospective beekeepers with all the gear they might need to get started, including bee suits, smokers and handmade hive boxes.

Until last year, one or both had separate jobs to continue running the business, but last year, Judy Stovall said she quit her first job to work full-time at the AJ Honey Farms store and apiary.

"It's amazing what we do, and we love what we do," Judy Stovall said. "If someone had told me 12 years ago that I would be doing this, I would've laughed and said, 'No, not happening,' and now it's amazing."

Judy Stovall focuses on selling honey and other products from the store and shipping dozens of honey bear bottles to various outlets across Kansas. 

In contrast, Allen Stovall often focuses on designing equipment and mentoring new customers.

This year, the pair added a new item for sale — honeybee hive bodies of various breeds packaged for those looking to begin their own apiaries.

"This is our first year selling bees, and we've done very well," Judy Stovall said. "We sell it all."

With almost a decade of success, the pair now focuses on growing their operations, aiming to include services like complex honey extraction and, someday, even beekeeping classes.

Allen Stovall said that for their next project, the pair plans to use some grant cash to upgrade their current honey extraction equipment to an automatic system.

"If we end up getting it, this whole area will turn into a semi-automatic extraction system to extract from the hive frames," Allen Stovall said. "Then it goes straight into a semi-automatic bottling system."

Judy Stovall added, "We also want to turn it into a training facility—we want to teach other beekeepers."

With the updated equipment, beekeepers could rent out their kitchen space for their bottling operations instead of purchasing it, and Allen Stovall plans to help them through the process.

In the distant future, the pair aim to purchase some land and transform it into a large facility to train beekeepers and research honeybees for Kansas residents and visitors.

AJ Honey Farms — leading local beekeepers toward success

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for&nbsp;the&nbsp;City of Bennington&nbsp;public water supply system&nbsp;located&nbsp;in&nbsp;Ottawa&nbsp;County.&nbsp;The advisory was&nbsp;issued&nbsp;by the city&nbsp;because&nbsp;of a loss of pressure. Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Bennington indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.  &nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Bennington public water supply system located in Ottawa County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on April 15 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

 </figure>The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Bennington public water supply system located in Ottawa County.Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Along with warmer weather and greener landscapes, the onset of spring brings numerous outdoor opportunities for parents to bond with their children, says Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles.

“There’s just all kinds of really cool activities and opportunities to support our children’s development in a conscientious and forward-thinking way,” Wiles said.

Wiles said outdoor learning can be very simple.

“Here’s an example: You know more about a tree and its (growth) system than a child could possibly know,” said Wiles, who is also a parent of young children. “You understand that the bark protects it. You understand that it turns the sun's energy into nutrients and energy. You understand it's got a root system.

“Young children don't know these things, and so you don't have to be an expert arborist to be able to say these things and to talk through these things. So, recognize that you have expertise beyond your children’s developmental level.”

Wiles said parents can be creative when planning outdoors time with their kids. Some suggestions include planning a scavenger hunt, or perhaps a bingo-style game in which kids must find certain objects in order to fill their card. Earthworms, anyone?

“One of my favorite things (as a parent) is to try to find different kinds of leaves,” Wiles said. “And if you don't know what the leaf is. that's okay. There are plenty of apps for that as well as you can just take a picture of the leaf and use Google to see what kind of leaf that is.”

Another activity, Wiles adds, is to count “how many different birds you see or hear.”

“The world is out there for you. And children are very curious about it. One of the things that parents can do in all of those things is talk through what happens if we don't treat our planet well. When we don't treat our planet well, those birds aren't here. They've gone further north because they can't handle being near the equator. They can't find things to eat.”

Earth Day is recognized on April 22 in the United States. Many other outdoor activities can help spur children’s learning and awareness toward protecting the world around them.

“For years now, I have made it a policy to pick up at least three pieces of trash whenever I go outside,” Wiles said. So wherever I am, I make it a point to always bring three pieces back. And so, organizing a bunch of children to do that is a lot of fun. It gives them a sense of purpose and recognizing that they're cleaning up and then maybe you talk about recycling.”

Wiles said parents can also find opportunities to learn from their children, who are growing up in a world where sun and wind energy are more common. On rainy days, look for educational books or videos that cover the benefits of protecting the Earth’s natural resources.

“We don’t want this to seem like doom and gloom for the children; you never want to make them feel bad,” Wiles said. “But there&nbsp;are great opportunities to talk through serious things in a safe and cool way while you're learning some things.”

This type of interactive learning, Wiles said, “can not only help you understand your child more -- which is always valuable information -- but can also help you understand what they need to advance and be able to make those changes and advocate for the things that we know are going to be really important as they grow.”

KSRE: Tips for Parents — activities to help to build kids’ appreciation of outside world

The Salina Youth Symphony Program will hold auditions for the 2024-2025 season on Saturday, May 18, at the Symphony Rehearsal Hall.

Students from elementary through high school are invited to audition and should come prepared to play a solo of their choice. They will also be asked to play scales and sight read. Please register online at <a href="http://www.salinasymphony.org">www.salinasymphony.org</a> for an audition time.

The Salina Youth Symphony features a full orchestra of advanced musicians under the direction of Henry Littich. The Youth String Ensemble is an intermediate orchestra performing under the baton of Dr. Leonardo Rosario.

The Youth Jazz Band, new next season, is an intermediate jazz ensemble directed by Adam Keller. The Preparatory Orchestra, a beginning string orchestra, is conducted by Michael Harbaugh. The ensembles rehearse on Saturday mornings throughout the school year and perform two concerts each season at the Stiefel Theatre.

Salina Symphony Announces Youth Symphony Auditions for 2024-2025 Season

Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another “Jeans Day” fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of March. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. A total donation of $1,024 will be presented to the Tri-County Free Fair Board of Directors. 

The Tri-County Free Fair is held each summer in Herington, and the namesake comes from the location of the event covering Dickinson, Marion, and Morris counties. The fair is the main summer activity and vacation-type event for many families in the area. 

The fair includes 4H and FFA activities, a parade, a rodeo, a demolition derby, a carnival, a kids pedal pull, and more. The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

Hello and happy Tuesday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Last night, Seth Lugo pitched seven excellent innings, Vinnie Pasquantino homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0.

KC improves to 5-0 against Chicago already this season, and the Royals have allowed a major league-low 48 runs during their 11-6 start, while the White Sox have scored just 34 runs so far as a team, which is the lowest total in MLB.

Unfortunately for Royals fans the win didn’t come without some bad news as All-Star Catcher Salvador Perez missed that contest due to a left groin strain from an injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Mets.

Fortunately however, Perez announced on Social media via his twitter account that he will return for Tuesday’s contest, telling Joel Goldberg that despite the strain he feels no pain, just light tightness&nbsp;

More locally, Salina Post confirmed on Monday that Ellsworth head boy’s basketball coach Brett Rolfs had resigned.

Rolfs finished his two-year run with a 31-14 record, and a trip to the 3A state tournament this year

And finally, speaking of Ellsworth the Bearcats baseball team will be in Salina this evening to take on Sacred Heart, and we will be broadcasting both games 100% free with live audio and video on our Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine games of the week

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 16

A witness at a storage unit in the 1500 block of West Schilling Road reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers about a suspect loitering near vehicles by the storage area.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said that just after 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12, officers met with the witness, who reported that as he was doing some work around the storage units, he saw an unknown man lingering just outside the storage unit's fencing.

"It looked like there were multiple cars, and it looked like items had been gone through," Feldman said. "It looks like he took multiple items, including license plates, paperwork and a key from another vehicle."

The suspect had rummaged through three cars before leaving.

The witness who reported the suspicious man took a picture of him and showed it to officers, who recognized him as 62-year-old Salina resident Robert Ford.

SPD officers later located Ford between Foxboro and Royal drives in town and found some stolen items from the storage unit.

"He was taken into custody," Feldman said. "He was charged with burglary of vehicles, three counts, and criminal trespassing for being in the fenced area of the storage unit."

The witness reported that Ford had trespassed into the storage unit area, but the burglarized vehicles were outside the fence.

Submitted With the ongoing industry demand for aviation maintenance professionals,&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;is launching the Aviation Maintenance Certification Program to help upskill those looking to elevate their careers. Thanks to SPARK grant funding from the state of Kansas, K-State Salina is offering full scholarships to help cover any financial burdens for those wanting a fresh-start in their careers or newly graduated high school seniors to gain the necessary skills to become certified aircraft mechanics in training led by world-class aviation maintenance faculty experts.The new Airframe certification program is 34 weeks in length and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. The training will delve into a cutting-edge curriculum that offers in-depth insights into aircraft operations, alongside advanced training in repair, maintenance and inspection technologies. The course is broken up into three modules that will educate in general knowledge, airframe structures and airframe systems. Participants in the Aviation Maintenance Certification Program will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be career-ready by completion. A myriad of professions demand this credential, including aircraft mechanic, avionics technician, aircraft inspector, quality control inspector and more. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/aircraft-and-avionics-equipment-mechanics-and-technicians.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>&nbsp;estimates a shortfall of 12,800 aircraft mechanics annually over the next decade, making training like the Aviation Maintenance Certification Program at K-State Salina critical to keeping aircraft around the world airworthy.To be eligible for the Aviation Maintenance Certification Program, students must be at least 18 years of age, be able to read, write, speak and understand English; and comply with the Code of Federal Regulations regarding&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-65/subpart-D">eligibility of mechanics</a>.The program goes&nbsp;from May 20, 2024 to February 14, 2025, including breaks and holidays. Lewis Black to stop in Salina for his 'Goodbye Yeller Brick Road, The Final Tour'

Lingering supercells, strong winds and possibly beneficial rain are on track for the Great Plains Monday evening, with an increased chance for a few stronger storms in north central Kansas after sundown. 

The <a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center</a> (NOAA SPC) forecasts a large area of enhanced and slight risks for severe weather beginning in the High Plains and extending through most of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and parts of Texas.

According to U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) Wichita Meteorologist Chris Jakub, the forecast data shows an increased risk for thunderstorms in central and north-central Kansas later at night.

"It's mainly going to be after dark," Jakub said. "It looks like it could have some lingering activity during the night and maybe into Tuesday morning."

Since storms will likely impact the Salina region after dark, Jakub said the chances for tornadic activity will decrease, but forecasts show other thunderstorm hazards continuing into early Tuesday morning.

Thunderstorms in north-central Kansas have the potential to form a line of storms, which could bring beneficial rain to the area.

"It's possible they [the thunderstorms] could get into a line. If that happens, it would reduce the severe weather," Jakub said. "It's a pretty good signal to bring some beneficial rain to the area because it's been quite dry."

Although Salina and nearby communities have a lower chance of seeing tornadic activity Monday evening, forecasts show damaging winds and large hail in the region.

Jakub said during severe weather events, he advises residents to keep more than two forms of receiving weather information. This could include smartphones, televisions, weather radios or other devices to connect to weather information.

Severe weather forecast for Salina region, strong storms moving into Central Plains Monday

Cottonwood Elementary School Third Graders hosted residents from Salina Presbyterian Manor at their school on Friday for the first time since forming relationships with their elderly new companions. While the residents made their way to the school, students got a headstart on the project they would complete with their elderly friends — a paper kite.

 </figure>By NATE KING Salina PostCottonwood Elementary School Third Graders hosted residents from Salina Presbyterian Manor at their school on Friday for the first time since forming relationships with their elderly new companions. While the residents made their way to the school, students got a headstart on the project they would complete with their elderly friends — a paper kite.Friday's visit marked the fourth time Cottonwood students met with Salina Presbyterian Manor residents. What began as a simple visit became a deep relationship grounded in understanding and companionship.According to Cottonwood Elementary Principal Kyle Griffitts, the idea for the project came from third-grade teacher Tessa Yungeberg.&nbsp;"She [Yungeberg] came up with the idea of taking students to visit with the residents at Salina Presbyterian Manor, and it became a lot more than that; it became relationships," said principal Kyle Griffiths. "It's just a really unique bond and fun to see two generations that can communicate and enjoy seeing one another."Yungeberg, currently working toward her master's degree, said the idea came from one of her class projects.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>"In one of my classes, we had to come up with a community project. And so we didn't have to make it happen or anything. But this was just my idea. I always thought it would be cool to bring those two communities together," Yungeberg.&nbsp;Back in January, Cottonwood third graders were divided into groups and assigned residents at Salina Presbyterian Manor. After visiting and sharing their life stories, the groups created presentations with information to share with other groups. Yungeberg said that although spending time building paper kites might not be the typical math or reading assignment, it is an integral part of learning.&nbsp;"They're learning how to create things together," Yungeberg said. "The residents have great ideas, and the students have creative ideas, and they can bring those together and show how things work best when we work together."<figure>

 </figure>CeCelia Anderson, a resident at Salina Presbyterian Manor, said she enjoys sharing stories about her life with the children."It is just so nice to be with the children and hear about their interests," said Anderson. "They are interested in me and how I grew up on a farm and went to a one-room school."As she began designing her own paper kite, Anderson said the one-room schoolhouse where she attended was not much bigger than Mrs. Hodson's third-grade classroom."Our parents took us in the morning so we would be on time," Anderson said. "The children couldn't believe how far we walked home after school each day."According to a statement released by the USD 305 District Office, The project was more than just a collaboration. It engaged young students' minds and hearts and honored the life experiences of older generations.<figure>

 </figure>Ray Salmon, a longtime Saline County educator was one of the Manor residents to visit Cottonwood."Mr. Salmon was my superintendent when I was in school," Griffitts said.&nbsp;The 95-year-old retired USD 306 superintendent and his wife, Lorene both said they were so pleased to be associating with young people again.&nbsp;"The facilities are clean and the educators are eager to work with the students and help get them through the day," Salmon said. "It is so great to be here."<figure>

 </figure>Amy Hoffman, a resident of the Manor, and centenarian said she remembers when she was a teacher "many years ago.""Many years ago I taught second and third grade and then I taught high school English," Hoffman said. "I remember one principal I had while I was teaching told me I shouldn't smile so much, I thought that was the silliest thing I had ever heard."When asked if other elementary schools in the area will join in this project, Yungeberg said she hopes so.&nbsp;"We're wrapping up the year and we have about another month left of school but I'm hoping next year, we can continue this project," Yungeberg said. "The Salina Education Foundation has helped us out a ton. They made it possible because they got us grants for the busses."<figure>

 </figure>"The Salina Community has come together and I hope that other organizations can come in and help us make this possible for next year," Yungeberg said.Yungeberg said more residents at Salina Presbyterian Manor would love a new Cottonwood Elementary student friend."I went to go visit some of the residents a few weeks ago, and I ran into other folks that I hadn't met before and they were like "How do I sign up for this?'" Yungeberg said.Through these enriching visits, the students at Cottonwood Elementary have made new friends and heard their intriguing personal histories, while learning to understand the world through a different lens.&nbsp;
