Saline County Jail Bookings, April 15

Submitted Lori Blake, Assaria, filed to run for the 69th seat in the Kansas House of Representatives on Friday, April 12. Blake is a lifetime resident of Saline County, serving most recently as the Executive Director at CAPS - Child Advocacy and Parenting Services.

According to Blake she is seeking this role to give voters a candidate who seeks solutions working with lawmakers across the aisle for lasting change felt by our neighbors.

Blake has built a career collaborating with community leaders as an advocate for&nbsp;all children and families.&nbsp;

“Over three decades as a small business owner and administrator in public education, disability supports and child abuse prevention, I have learned families are the foundation for society. When they thrive, we all do, but that’s not currently what’s happening. Many families are in survival mode.” Blake said.&nbsp;

During her three terms on the USD 306 School Board, she rose to be elected as the President of the Kansas Association of School Boards and is known as a public education advocate across the state. “We’ve made great gains in stabilizing the funding for public education and growing a rainy day fund, but our legislators have forgotten their duty. The legislature’s job is to fund the work, not continue passing policy that should be decided by our locally elected school board members and city and county commissioners who know our community values and needs,” Blake said.

Blake said she is also concerned about the loss of respect for public servants like our teachers, medical providers, and law enforcement officers; lack of universal access to quality health care; and government intrusion into an individual’s private life.

“I chose to stay and make a life in Central Kansas. My husband and I have raised three children here. I love this place and want to do all I can to leave it better than I found it. I hope the existing relationships I’ve had&nbsp;in&nbsp;my career and volunteer service will give me a head start to lift local issues,” Blake said.

After 10 years of being an unaffiliated registered voter, Blake filed as a Democrat.&nbsp;She wants to represent Saline County and create opportunities for unity instead of extreme division. She says her values, like most Kansans, live in the middle of the typical political spectrum.&nbsp; Blake says that she loves making connections with new people and working together. To demonstrate the importance of bipartisanship, she sought out John Quinley, a Republican from Salina, to serve as her Treasurer.&nbsp;

“The different experiences across humanity present challenges, but when we can listen and focus on the issue at hand, the group mind prevails with solutions that are often mutually beneficial. Just like sending my kids to Salina Area Technical College, KU and K-State, we have different options to meet different needs. What’s good for Kansans is good for&nbsp;Kansas,” Blake said.

"The reason we talk about Work Zone safety is because it's really, truly, for the safety of everybody," said Tim Potter with the Kansas Department of Transportation."About 90% of the time, or nine in ten times, the people who are injured in work zone crashes are motorists themselves."

There were more injuries in work zone crashes last year than the year before.

"Last year, in Kansas, we had nine people who died in work zone crashes," Potter said. "Five hundred and eight were injured. We'd like to get that number down. That's part of the reason we try to raise awareness to this."

Please be focused if you see a work zone ahead.

"The top contributing circumstance of work zone crashes is inattention," Potter said. "People are following the vehicle in front of them too closely. They are driving too fast for the conditions. We do typically have reduced speed signs in the work zones. It's double fines in all Kansas work zones, whether that's a major construction project or a short term maintenance project."

Orange is the primary color in work zones. Go Orange Day in Kansas is Wednesday, April 17. Everyone is encouraged to wear orange and show highway workers and everyone who works along the roadways how much their efforts are appreciated.&nbsp;

KDOT: Work Zone awareness important for drivers, too

Hello and happy Monday everybody, it’s&nbsp;Tyler&nbsp;Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Over the weekend Kansas Wesleyan Baseball picked up its 20th consecutive Kansas Conference win as the Coyotes completed a three-game sweep of the Tabor Bluejays with a 10-2 win on Sunday at Dean Evans Stadium.

The Coyotes collected victories of 27-7, 8-5, and 10-2 to skyrocket to the top of the KCAC standings, doing all of that damage to the 23rd-ranked team in the NAIA poll, and making a strong case for themselves to be ranked next time around.

K-Dub will take on Sterling this Tuesday before a pivotal set this weekend against Oklahoma Wesleyan that could very well decide this year’s conference champion

Saturday was also great day for the Kansas Wesleyan men’s volleyball team, who continued a year of firsts at Mabee Arena with a resounding four-set victory over Ottawa.

In a year that saw the Coyotes post their first winning record, and host their first conference tournament game, K-Dub will also be headed to their first GPAC final four as they prepare to take on the defending champs in Jamestown this Friday

And finally, our Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Game of the Week will take us to Salina this Tuesday, as the Sacred Heart Knights prepare to host the Ellsworth Bearcats in an all-NCAA showdown at 4:00

Just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, a resident reported their black 1996 Kawasaki 250R motorcycle stolen from their home sometime overnight.

The resident reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers that the bike went missing between 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, and 6 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.

"[The motorcycle is] valued at $1,000," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "It was stolen from the residence. I can't tell you exactly if it was parked in the street, driveway or behind the house — it doesn't say."

Feldman said an unknown suspect stole the motorcycle from the residence in the 100 block of South Chicago Street in town.

SPD continues searching for further evidence of the crime, but there are no suspects at this time.

Unknown suspect steals 1996 Kawasaki motorcycle from Salina resident overnight

LIVE First Fridays returned to downtown Salina on Friday, April 9. The event opened with local artists The Sam Club Band and Cary Brinegars showcasing their talents to the community.

Brinegars showcased his Silly Line Drawings at&nbsp;Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat downtown.

"I started doing these lines because my wife was in her cancer fight, so we'd sit a lot and watch television," Brinegars said. "I started doing lines on a scrap piece of paper she was cutting off of an art project. Then it evolved into doing full sheets."

<a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/">Salina Downtown, Inc</a>. organizes the community event on the first Friday of each month in the summertime, featuring different local artists in each show.

"I really hope Salina will come together and support these LIVE First Fridays. We need people to come and enjoy it," said Salina Downtown Executive Director Leslie Bishop. "We would love this area to really be bustling on LIVE First Fridays."

The following LIVE First Friday will be on Friday, May 3, at the City Lights Stage downtown, where Vegan Shark begins its show at 6 p.m.

On Friday evening at approximately 7:53 p.m. Salina Fire crews responded to a two-garage fire in North Salina.

According to Salina Fire Battalion Chief Derrick Herzog, the fire engulfed two garage units near the backyard of a home in the 1000 Block of N. 10th Street in Salina.

Residents in the area where the fire occurred said they heard a large explosion shortly before 8 p.m. When they came outside to see what happened, they saw flames across the street that were taller than the one-story home near the garages.

Herzog said there were no injuries as a result of the fire.&nbsp;

Kansas Wesleyan’s Theatre Arts department will premier its production of “Working: A Musical – Localized” on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. The show will also run April 13 at 7 p.m., April 14 at 2 p.m. and&nbsp;April 19 at 7 p.m., with the latter date being part of Spring Alumni and Community Weekend.&nbsp;

“This winter, I was delighted to find that ‘Working’ had developed an updated and localized version,” said Karen Brassea, associate professor of theatre arts and the show’s director. “It also includes an option to cut — or replace — certain interviews with ones that better reflect people in our school and community. This makes it even more relevant and helps better answer the show’s original questions, which ask how to improve life for the next generation. I look forward to seeing many friends and community members come out to each showing to support our tremendous students!”

KWU Theatre Presents ‘Working, A Musical – Localized’

For the second time in seven years, Kansas has just experienced a near-total eclipse.&nbsp; Both times, I headed outside to view it through my eye-protecting eclipse glasses, here at Emporia State.&nbsp; Each time was a fun opportunity to join with others on our campus and watch a rare, natural phenomenon.&nbsp; This time, it was also a chance to reflect on just how much has changed.

The 2017 eclipse occurred more than two years before the Covid pandemic of 2020-2021, and five years before deep cuts were made to ESU’s workforce and programs in 2022.&nbsp; Back then, the watch party was a busy campus event.&nbsp; Union Square between Plumb Hall and Memorial Union was standing-only, packed with students, faculty, and staff anticipating the event.&nbsp; People shared their eclipse glasses and chatted while waiting for the moon to cross the sun.&nbsp; Some classes let out early and people rushed outside to see it.&nbsp; Academic departments disseminated information about eclipses, reminded people of the proper safety protocols, and encouraged visits to the ESU Planetarium.&nbsp; Campus buildings emptied, then filled back up again after the event’s climax.&nbsp; Watching all those people wearing funny glasses and looking in the same direction, I couldn’t help but think of those 1950s photos showing people wearing 3-D glasses in movie theaters. That was us, crowded together, murmuring excitedly, pointing and watching the sun and moon in all their glory–and ours.

What a difference six and a half years makes.&nbsp; We still watched the eclipse at ESU, and it was still fun, but the feel was completely different.&nbsp; Instead of a standing-only crowd, there was just a handful of us, so few that we could each find a comfortable chair in the newly renovated Union Square.&nbsp; Most who did come were students.&nbsp; I could count only a small number of faculty besides myself. We sat and chatted, taking turns looking through the glasses.&nbsp; There were no campus-sponsored, eclipse-watching events, except a small performance by some music students on another part of campus. Many others preferred to watch at home.&nbsp;

These changes reflect that way our campus, campuses more generally, and work life have all changed since 2017.&nbsp; The cuts of 2022 reduced our faculty, and student enrollments are down as well.&nbsp; Those who remain now work more from home.&nbsp; Courses are a mix of online and face to face. The whole feel of our campus reminds me of a campus during the summer–just a handful of us, quiet, peaceful, plenty of time to get work done.&nbsp;

This tale of two eclipses is part of a bigger story. &nbsp; College enrollments are down nationally, and some other campuses have also experienced deep cuts.&nbsp; Post-pandemic, white collar workers have continued working from home at least part of the time, in no small part due to the high cost and shortage of childcare.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I miss the bustling excitement of 2017.&nbsp; If I’m being honest, though, I can also get used to the new climate.&nbsp; I like the relaxed, chill vibe– just students and a handful of faculty chatting and enjoying the eclipse safely, a comfortable front-row seat for everyone– an endless summer on campus.&nbsp; It’s a good thing, too, because as universities face lower enrollments and working from home gets institutionalized, quieter workplaces are here to stay.&nbsp;

Insight Kansas: Eclipse Watch Parties Show How Campus Has Changed

Between Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 7:00 PM and Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 8:00 a.m., an unknown suspect(s) broke out a window on a Callabresi Heating and Cooling work van which was parked in the&nbsp;1400 of Springfield Street, Salina, Kansas.

Upon gaining entry to the van numerous tools were stolen. Some of the tools included a gas sniffer, a Micron Gauge, a combustion analyzer, a UEI Meter, a TB6 Veto bag, an ACIS Chromebook, HP Laptop and numerous other tools. Total loss was over $10,600.

A $2.7 million federal grant is helping the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://coe.k-state.edu/">College of Education</a>&nbsp;improve rural education in the state. To take advantage of the last year of grant funding, the college is offering free training and thousands of dollars in resources for teachers.

The College of Education's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/stem-career-education/about/">Rural Education Center</a>, or REC, is seeking rural teachers and schools to participate in the final year of programming funded by a nearly $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense. The grant is designed to promote students' interest in degrees and careers in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Participating schools receive funds for professional development sessions and $3,000 to purchase technology, enabling them to host their LEAPES camp this summer.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/stem-career-education/about/leapes.html">Project LEAPES</a>&nbsp;is an acronym for Learning, Exploration, and Application for Prospective Engineering Students.

The 2024 Project LEAPES Virtual Camp will occur 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 3-13, and Monday- Friday, June 17-21, excluding the Juneteenth holiday. This year's camp will include new robotics kits and self-paced asynchronous coding activities. The registration fee is $100 and is open to students in upper elementary and grades 6 through 8.

Classes are offered synchronously over Zoom, with students reporting to their local classroom to use equipment. The local teacher will co-teach with a K-State faculty member online.

Teachers who sign up will receive a $1,000 stipend and more than $3,000 of classroom equipment. They will also attend two professional development sessions on April 15 and April 29 to learn to use the new equipment.

In partnership with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cresis.ku.edu/">The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets</a>, or CReSIS, at the University of Kansas, the REC builds upon its successful&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://coe.k-state.edu/collaborations/summer-stem-programs/">Summer STEM program</a>&nbsp;to encourage students throughout Kansas to consider careers in STEM through Project LEAPES.

Last summer, approximately 280 students from 32 schools participated in the middle school virtual camps. Five more classrooms participated asynchronously in Fall 2023, with approximately 120 students participating. Additionally, 80 students participated in the high school camp hosted at the University of Kansas.

The LEAPES grant is part of more than $47 million in awards recently announced under the National Defense Education Program in STEM, biotechnology and enhanced civics education.

Teacher participants needed for K-State College of Education rural STEM learning

Early Wednesday morning, Salina Police Department officers responded to a local business that reported more than $10,500 worth of tools stolen from a company vehicle.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said officers reported to a <a href="https://www.callabresi.com/">Callabresi Heating and Cooling</a>&nbsp;van around 8 a.m. in the 1400 block of Springfield Street.

The business had parked the van there overnight, away from the business lot just a few blocks south.

"A van had been broken into overnight, and numerous tools and a computer, but mostly tools, had been stolen, for a total of $10,620 worth of tools," Feldman said. "The window had been broken out."

Feldman said the suspect shattered the front driver's side window to gain entry and steal the tools and technology sometime between Tuesday evening, April 9 and Wednesday morning, April 10, from the company.

SPD officers continue to investigate the crime but have no suspects at this time.

Suspect breaks window of company van, steals more than $10,000 in tools

It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather and plant growth arrive. Proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Lawn maintenance should start now

Gunn, Historiography Paper, Salina Police Force, 1954.Dorethea LaFollette worked at the Salina Police Department for 21 years. Acting Chief Howard Wickersham hired LaFollette, reporting for duty on September 4, 1943. LaFollette was the first woman to serve in the Salina Police Department.&nbsp;LaFollette grew up in the Kansas communities of Manhattan and Utica. She graduated with a degree in Industrial Journalism at Kansas State Agricultural College. LaFollette’s first job was teaching Spanish at Utica High School, located in northwest Kansas.<figure>

 </figure>In the mid-1930s, Dorothea maintained the bookkeeping for the city clerk's office and water department. During this time, LaFollette often filled-in as Manhattan's police matron, another word used&nbsp;to describe a woman in a municipal police department who has charge of detained women and children.&nbsp;LaFollette's position as a matron led her to work at the Manhattan Police Department as a desk sergeant in 1942. For the next 21 years, LaFollette worked for the Salina police department earning the rank of Lieutenant.LaFollette was an active member of the Kansas Business and Professional Women’s Club and other groups promoting the status of women. Under a medical disability, she retired in 1964.Several supportive chiefs recognized the efficiency of LaFollette’s work and the importance of the female on the force. The addition of LaFollette to the Salina Police Department represented a departure from standard police procedure at the time, as it was not commonplace to have female officers."There is a deep feeling of satisfaction in having helped someone over the rough spots."-&nbsp;Lt.
