Every year, thousands lose their lives on America’s roadways because a driver diverted their attention away from their driving.&nbsp;

"Mobile phones are the obvious top contender, in terms of most distracting element while you are driving," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We all see it. We all probably take a look at our phone or do something on our phone while we're driving, but there's also eating and drinking, talking with passengers in your vehicle, distractions outside the vehicle. There's so many different things that can take your focus off of driving."

April marks National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

"Researchers found that, while only two seconds of distraction doubles the crash risk, it takes a driver 40 seconds to program a navigation system using in-vehicle technology," Steward said. "Even if your going 25 miles an hour, a driver can travel the length of four football fields during the time it takes to enter a destination on a navigation screen."

About 13% of distraction-related crashes every year involve confirmed use of a smartphone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"Federal government crash statistics from 2022, the latest ones available, there were 3,300 people killed and an additional 289,000 people injured in crashes involving distracted drivers."

In Kansas, preliminary 2023 data shows 102 people died, and more than 450 people were injured in crashes due to distracted driving.

Grammy Award-winning Reggae music group Burning Spear is coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre in June.&nbsp;

With a career spanning over six decades, Winston Rodney's message remains on point and his vocal delivery is as powerful as it is identifiable. Burning Spear is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. June 27 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Burning Spear's impact on reggae music is profound. A true legend, Spear's legacy through his music is one of self-reliance and self-determination for the African diaspora.

Rodney began his music career in the late 1960s, attributing his start to a fateful encounter with Bob Marley. Both were living in the St. Ann's parish of Jamaica.&nbsp;

"Bob was going to his farm. The man was moving with a donkey and some buckets and a fork, and cutlass and plants. We just reason man-to-man and I-man say wherein I would like to get involved in the music business. And Bob say, 'All right, just check Studio One,'" Spear said.&nbsp;

It was there that Spear recorded his first two classic albums, "Burning Spear" and "Rocking Time."

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Burning Spear rocked the reggae world, releasing acclaimed albums such as "Social Living," "Hail H.I.M." and "Resistance." His music evolved to incorporate elements of jazz, funk, and rock, while maintaining its solid roots reggae foundation.

Burning Spear has won two Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album; one at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 for "Calling Rastafari," and one for 2009's "Jah Is Real." He has been nominated for a total of 12 Gramm​​y™ Awards. He was awarded the Jamaican government's Order of Distinction for outstanding services to music in 2007.

Since establishing their own label Burning Music Records, Winston and Sonia Rodney have released nearly forty singles, CDs, DVDs and vinyl albums on the Burning Music imprint.

In addition to his music career, Burning Spear is a dedicated anti-racism activist and philanthropist. He has been involved in various social and political causes throughout his career, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa, the struggle for independence in Zimbabwe and his campaign to raise awareness of the teachings of Marcus Garvey.

Burning Spear's legacy as a reggae icon is everlasting, and his music continues to inspire and uplift audiences around the world. His influence can be heard in the work of countless artists who have followed in his footsteps, and his message of love and unity remain as relevant today as ever.

In 1934, winds atop Mount Washington, New Hampshire averaged 186 mph for 5 minutes with a peak gust of 231 mph, the strongest gust on record for the U.S. 

 At the time, the 231 mph gust had also been the highest wind speed ever recorded in the world until April 10th, 1996, when a 253 mph gust was measured at Barrow Island, Australia as Super Typhoon Olivia annihilated the region.

In 1927, the third deadliest tornado in Texas history occurred when a violent F5, averaging nearly 1 mile wide, went on a 35-mile rampage through Rocksprings, located in extreme South Texas. The huge twister killed 74 and injured 205, or about one-third of the town's population at the time. An estimated $1.23 million in damage resulted as 235 of the 247 buildings were destroyed, many of which were leveled.


In 1959, a snowstorm produced up to 10 inches in Central Kansas in a swath from Russell to Cottonwood Falls.

NWS-Wichita — High temps and windy weather forecasted this weekend

New shelters for general aviation aircraft are under construction at Salina Regional Airport, replacing nine hangars damaged or destroyed by a December 2021 derecho.

Defined as a long-lived windstorm, the derecho was declared a natural disaster.

The cost to repair the wind damaged obsolete hangars was prohibitive, said Maynard Cunningham, director of facilities and construction, so the decision was to rebuild.

The SAA did not qualify for insurance settlements, said Shelli Swanson, director of administration and finance, but was deemed eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance, which paid for $992,809 of the $3 million project cost.

The new C-Hangars — all pre-leased to aircraft owners — are being built just northwest of the M.J. Kennedy Air Terminal. “There are 13 units," Cunningham said.

“How many aircraft can be stored depends on the size of the aircraft,” he said.

For example, one unit could house two Cessna 172s or one twin-engine Cessna310, Cunningham said.

Target date for completion of the current hangar project is July 1, he said. Contractors on site are Prairie Landworks, of McPherson and Bret Givens Construction, of Hutchinson. Salina based contractors are Precision Electrical Contractors, Dellinger Fence, and APAC.

The Airport Authority is looking for opportunities to build more GA hangars. There is a waiting list with names of 40 people wanting to lease hangar space at Salina Airport.

“You build in phases. It’s better to have a list of people waiting for hangars than a list of hangars waiting for people,” said Pieter Miller, deputy executive director of the Salina Airport Authority.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) announced this week that 92 Kansas high school seniors have earned the recognition as 2024 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars.

The announcement was made during the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

The Kansas CTE Scholar program is an opportunity to recognize well-rounded, outstanding CTE students who are finishing their senior year of high school. The first Kansas CTE Scholars were named in 2017.

To be named a CTE Scholar, a student must be a high school senior and meet the following criteria:

Have completed (or upon successful completion of current course enrollment) a minimum of three CTE credits with at least two of the three credits above introductory level. Earned credits must be in one pathway.

Have a CTE grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or better in CTE coursework.

Be involved in civic engagement leadership, which refers to a student selecting an issue of concern and providing leadership through project-based actions to improve the community, state or nation; or have a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer experience. A letter of validation is required for civic engagement leadership, and documentation of 100 hours with an adult signature is required for community service.

Have a career vision summary statement that is a short reflection of a candidate’s personal career vision and future plans. A maximum of 175 words is allowed.

A minimum of one of the following technical skill attainment options must be earned and verified:

Earned an end of pathway (aligned with pathway selected) assessment/certiﬁcation for completer status (industry- recognized certiﬁcation or a passing score on a third-party, end-of- pathway assessment) recorded on the K-PAC (Kansas Pathway Assessments, Credentials or Certiﬁcations) columns eight (8) and nine (9).

Earned an Excel in CTE Qualifying Recognized Credential aligned to the Pathway selected.

Earned nine (9) + college hours leading to completion of a certiﬁcate, or post-secondary program aligned to the Pathway's Program of Study that was selected.

Completed a high-quality work-based learning career preparation experience, Kansas Work-Based Learning Continuum, in the Pathway selected deﬁned in Kansas Work-Based Learning: Personalized Learning Plan Guidance Document (ksde.org).

CTE scholars receive a commemorative pin, special certificate, graduation honor cord and statewide recognition.

KSDE announces career and technical education scholars

Beginning Friday April 12, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be working on replacing sections of pavement on East Wilson Street between Kenison Road and Sunrise Drive.

 East Wilson Street will be closed to thru traffic during working hours and will be reopened to one lane traffic during off hours.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within two to three weeks.

Hello, and Happy Friday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. 

On Thursday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice surrendered to police on charges including aggravated assault, after he and another driver of a speeding sports car allegedly caused a crash involving a half dozen vehicles on a Dallas highway last month. 

A spokeswoman for Rice's attorney confirmed to the Associated Press Thursday evening that Rice turned himself into the Glenn Heights Police Department. Rice was booked into the Regional Jail in DeSoto and was released on bond on Thursday night. 

Meanwhile, in Kansas City, Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits including two home runs and five RBI as the Kansas City Royals used a nine-run first inning to defeat the Houston Astros 13-3&nbsp; on Thursday, completing the three game sweep and extending their win streak to seven games.&nbsp; 

Vinnie Pasquantino&nbsp;who came into Wednesday's game hitting just 108 with no RBI was three for five with three driven in and it's now batting .222 with eight driven it. 

And finally speaking of diamond sports today, two of the hottest softball teams in the state of Kansas will collide at 3 p.m.&nbsp; as the Southeast of Saline Lady Trojans prepare to host the Chapman Lady Irish in Gypsum.

SES will look to remain undefeated while the Irish look to extend an impressive 6-2 start and both games will be broadcast on demand after the contests are complete on our YouTube page and on Salina Post.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 12

The North Central Regional Planning Commission of Beloit has named two seniors from North Central Kansas winners of its 2023-2024 Rural Voices Youth Contest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thaddeus Donley, a senior at Donley Ranch Schoolhouse in rural Ellsworth County, and Noah Goss, a senior at Ellsworth High School, submitted the winning entries in this year’s contest. Each will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the John R. Cyr Rural Voices Award, named in honor of Cyr, who served for 22 years as the NCRPC Executive Director.

“We are pleased to honor this year’s recipients of the John R. Cyr Rural Voices Award,” said NCRPC Executive Director John Shea. “It is inspiring to hear what participants say about the region and rural Kansas each year – and this year was no exception.”&nbsp;

The North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) has sponsored the contest since 2006 and awarded more than $30,000 to high school seniors from the region. 

The 2023-2024 Rural Voices Youth Contest invited high school seniors from the 12-county NCRPC service area to share their perspectives on the theme, “Rural Kansas…Success Through Innovation.” Students were encouraged to submit an original essay or video that reflected this theme. The eligible counties included Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Ottawa, Republic, Saline, and Washington.&nbsp;

North Central Regional Planning Commission names winners of Rural Voices Youth Contest

The 40th Salina Spring Poetry Series, sponsored and organized by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, continues on Tuesday, April 16, with a reading by Laura Lee Washburn.

The reading will begin at 7 p.m. at Red Fern Booksellers, 106 S Santa Fe Ave. Admission will be $5 cash at the door and free for students with ID.

Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate, curated this year’s series. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives who will share their work in Salina this month.

“Laura Lee Washburn is one of the most dedicated advocates for poetry in Kansas. When I was at an artist residency in Arkansas, someone asked me if I knew Laura Lee Washburn because her class at Pittsburg State was the reason they were a writer," said Brimhall. "That's the kind of passion for language she inspires. Her work always courts the mysterious and the complicated nature of beauty. She spends a great deal of her time advocating for the arts, her students, and her community, and I'm so grateful that she could make the time to come be a part of the series this year."

Laura Lee Washburn is a University Professor, the Director of Creative Writing at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, the author of The Book of Stolen Images (Meadowlark) 

Washburn was awarded the Nelson Book Award from the Kansas Authors Club, This Good Warm Place: 10th Anniversary Expanded Edition (March Street) and Watching the Contortionists (Palanquin Chapbook Prize), and the Editor-in-Chief of Poetry Cooperative/Heartland: Poetry of Love, Resistance, and Solidarity

 Her book "Arteries" is coming this May. Harbor Review’s "Washburn Prize is named in her honor.

The work will be completed in three phases. Phase 1 will close Cedar Ridge Drive from Markley Rd to the middle of the intersection of Briargate Drive.&nbsp; Phase 2 will start after Phase 1 is open to traffic. Traffic control and&nbsp;detour signage will be placed Monday morning. Residents and travelers on Valley View Drive and east will have access via Marymount Road.

City of Salina announces pavement improvement schedule for Cedar Ridge Drive

In an unusual turn of events, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment replaced a boil advisory with a do not drink advisory for the Sundowner West Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Saline County.

According to a release issued by the KDHE, the do not drink advisory was put in place because of the occurrence of manganese concentrations above the EPA Health Advisory Level for infants under six months in parts of the distribution system.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

⦁&nbsp;DO NOT GIVE TAP WATER TO INFANTS ⦁ Infants up to six months who drink water containing manganese in excess of the EPA Health Advisory Level for infants (300 ug/L) could experience adverse health effects ⦁ Water, juice, and formula intended for infants should not be prepared with tap water. Use bottled water or other water low in manganese for this purpose.

&nbsp;DO NOT BOIL TAP WATER ⦁ Manganese levels cannot be reduced by boiling. Excessive boiling can concentrate the manganese as water evaporates because the manganese remains in the water

⦁Do not use water to cook or prepare food

⦁ Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker

⦁ Tap water can be used for bathing. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested

⦁Tap water may be used to flush toilets.

The advisory took effect on April 11 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

This advisory is the latest from years' worth of neglect, as several residents at Sundowner continue to experience black sludgy water coming from their faucets, or no water at all.

According to the release, because of the presence of manganese in some areas of the distribution system, KDHE is advising customers of Sundowner Mobile Home Park to not boil their water.

Boiling water containing high levels of manganese will cause the manganese to concentrate, making it even more unsafe to drink or use.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued another boil water advisory for the Sundowner West Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Saline County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking&nbsp;or food preparation or use bottled water. Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker. If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on&nbsp;April 11&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;KDHE&nbsp;officials issued the advisory because of&nbsp;a loss of pressure&nbsp;in the distribution system. Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

 </figure>Updated 4/12/2024 at 3:27 p.m.By SALINA POSTIn an unusual turn of events, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment replaced a boil advisory with a do not drink advisory for the Sundowner West Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Saline County.According to a release issued by the KDHE, the do not drink advisory was put in place because of the occurrence of manganese concentrations above the EPA Health Advisory Level for infants under six months in parts of the distribution system.&nbsp;Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:⦁&nbsp;DO NOT GIVE TAP WATER TO INFANTS ⦁ Infants up to six months who drink water containing manganese in excess of the EPA Health Advisory Level for infants (300 ug/L) could experience adverse health effects ⦁ Water, juice, and formula intended for infants should not be prepared with tap water. Use bottled water or other water low in manganese for this purpose. &nbsp;DO NOT BOIL TAP WATER ⦁ Manganese levels cannot be reduced by boiling. Excessive boiling can concentrate the manganese as water evaporates because the manganese remains in the water ⦁Do not use water to cook or prepare food⦁ Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker⦁ Tap water can be used for bathing.
