The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Bennington public water supply system located in Ottawa County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a power fluctuation. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Bennington indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

The 2024 Salina Downtown Parade of Lights will brighten the streets of downtown Salina on November 23 at 6 p.m. Parade organizers are reminding participants that the deadline to register their float or entry is Monday, November 18, at noon. Late entries will not be accepted, so those interested must sign up promptly.

The parade will start at Elm Street and proceed down Santa Fe Avenue to Prescott, promising an evening of holiday cheer, twinkling lights, and family fun. Pre-parade performances will kick off at 5 p.m. at the City Lights Stage, offering attendees an early dose of festive entertainment. Performers interested in participating before the parade should indicate their preference upon registration, but performances will not be allowed during the parade.

All lighted entries must adhere to Salina Downtown, Inc.'s electrical and generator safety requirements. Participants are advised to consult a licensed electrician regarding any electrical concerns. Key guidelines include:

Electrical wiring must be properly secured, approved for use, and fused correctly.

Portable generators should be securely mounted with adequate clearance from combustible materials and must remain uncovered.

 Open flames are strictly prohibited on floats and towing vehicles.

Entries failing to meet these safety standards will be disqualified from the parade.

CoCoRaHS 24-hour rain totals

The Kansas Department of Health and the Environment estimates that more than 240,000 Kansans have Type II diabetes, a form of the disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin – or doesn’t use insulin properly – resulting in high blood sugar levels.

Perhaps a more sobering statistic: More than 60,000 people in Kansas don’t even know they have the disease.

“Those are cases in which the disease has not been diagnosed,” said Christina Holmes, a family and consumer sciences specialist in K-State Research and Extension’s southeast regional office. “I consider that an opportunity for education.”

Holmes is one of the organizers for the statewide Dining with Diabetes course that is offered online and in-person through Kansas extension offices.

Holmes said the course focuses on such areas as carbohydrate control, portion control, physical activity and things people can do to reduce their likelihood of developing diabetes.

“Individuals that have diabetes can attend this course just to learn about what they can do differently,” Holmes said. “It's also an opportunity for support and engagement so they don't feel alone in this process. It’s also open to caregivers, family members and anyone in their support system. It's really important not to navigate this diabetes process alone, so (caregivers) can learn how to care for their loved one, or how to prepare meals differently so everyone can have healthier lives.”

K-State family and consumer sciences extension agents Franny Eastwood and Chelsea Richmond are among several who have received training to teach the course.

“It’s broken down into one session a week for four weeks, with a follow-up session several weeks later,” said Eastwood, who is in K-State’s Marais des Cygne extension district. “So, completing the course is really up to each individual and how quickly they want to go through the information.”

Richmond, who is in K-State’s Frontier extension district, said the course focuses on living well with the disease.

“There are meal planning tips that participants can walk through, as well as cooking demonstration videos with diabetic-friendly recipes," Richmond said.&nbsp;

Additional sessions include information on carbohydrates and sweeteners and what a full plate of food should look like. The course also covers ideas for eating outside the home, such as restaurants.

“It’s great practical information for anyone, but it’s not just for the pre-diabetics or the Type II diabetics,” Eastwood said. “It’s something that we all can use for good health.”

Dining with diabetes course slated for Nov. 18

The Salina Police Department arrested a 45-year-old man Monday afternoon following an attempted break-in at a residence in the 200 block of Des Moines Avenue.&nbsp;

SPD officers responded to a 911 call from a 47-year-old female Salina resident at around 12:15 p.m. The victim reported that her former neighbor, identified as John W. Harper, approached her home armed with a handgun with the intent to enter her property, according to SPD Capt. James Feldman.

During the incident, Harper allegedly damaged a storm door handle and removed a doorbell camera before fleeing the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

At around 1:30 p.m., SPD received a FLOCK safety license plate reader alert indicating Harper’s vehicle was in the area of Broadway Boulevard and Crawford Street. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near Haskett Avenue and Maple Street, where Harper was taken into custody without incident. A subsequent search of his vehicle reportedly uncovered the handgun described by the victim.&nbsp;

Harper was booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including attempted aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, stalking, criminal possession of a firearm, theft, damage to property, and criminal trespass.

Moundridge gets surgeon

By SALINA POST The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a wanted Kansas felon on multiple allegations after a chase and arrest during the weekend.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a Dickinson County Sheriff's Office deputy observed a red Chevrolet pickup in the area of East 6th Street and Pine in Solomon, according to Dickinson County Undersheriff&nbsp;Jeff Vaughan.

The pickup was traveling without any lights and failed to stop at a stop sign. The Sheriff’s deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the vehicle. The driver accelerated and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the area of Old Highway 40 and Deer Road in Dickinson County.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Carlito Luis Morales, 34, of Salina. 

It was discovered that Morales had a warrant out of Saline County for his arrest. Morales was transported to the Dickinson County Detention Facility.

Just before 10:30;.m. a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call for service regarding damage to property in the 200 Block of West 4th Street in Solomon. It was reported a vehicle earlier in the evening had driven through a yard of a residence, spinning its tires causing damage to the lawn. During the investigation, Morales was developed as the suspect in this case.

Morales is being held in the the Dickinson County Detention Facility for the warrant out of Saline County and requested charges of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, mIgnition Interlock Device; Operate a vehicle without a required device, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Criminal Damage to Property

Morales has previous convictions for burglary, aggravated battery, criminal threat, battery and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections&nbsp;

 </figure>By SALINA POST The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a wanted Kansas felon on multiple allegations after a chase and arrest during the weekend.Just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a Dickinson County Sheriff's Office deputy observed a red Chevrolet pickup in the area of East 6th Street and Pine in Solomon, according to Dickinson County Undersheriff&nbsp;Jeff Vaughan.The pickup was traveling without any lights and failed to stop at a stop sign. The Sheriff’s deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the vehicle. The driver accelerated and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the area of Old Highway 40 and Deer Road in Dickinson County.The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Carlito Luis Morales, 34, of Salina. It was discovered that Morales had a warrant out of Saline County for his arrest. Morales was transported to the Dickinson County Detention Facility.Just before 10:30;.m. a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call for service regarding damage to property in the 200 Block of West 4th Street in Solomon. It was reported a vehicle earlier in the evening had driven through a yard of a residence, spinning its tires causing damage to the lawn. During the investigation, Morales was developed as the suspect in this case.Morales is being held in the the Dickinson County Detention Facility for the warrant out of Saline County and requested charges of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, mIgnition Interlock Device; Operate a vehicle without a required device, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Criminal Damage to PropertyMorales has previous convictions for burglary, aggravated battery, criminal threat, battery and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections&nbsp;

Seymour harbors a crush on his coworker, Audrey, played by Kaitlyn Marshall. His life takes a wild turn after a total eclipse, when he discovers a peculiar plant he names Audrey II. As Seymour cares for this unusual plant, he soon discovers it has an insatiable thirst for human blood. The growing Audrey II attracts new customers and much-needed business to the failing shop, but Seymour finds himself facing difficult choices, especially after the accidental death of Audrey’s boyfriend, Orin, played by MJ White. Now, Seymour must choose between keeping Audrey II fed and protecting his future with the girl he loves.

This quirky musical will run approximately two hours, including a 15-minute intermission. The Salina South Theatre Department invites the community to enjoy this thrilling and comical journey that promises to entertain with its blend of dark humor, unforgettable music, and outlandish characters.

Salina South High School presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors” this week

By SALINA POST Salina Police Department (SPD) officers and Salina Fire Department (SFD) firefighters are investigating a Saturday morning vehicle fire that was determined to be arson.

At approximately 1:48 a.m. on November 2, officers and firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle on fire in the parking lot at 2140 E. Crawford. When they arrived they found a white 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle, valued at approximately $4,500, was quickly extinguished by SFD personnel.

After assessing the scene the fire was classified as arson. Witnesses in the area reported seeing a man wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans running from the vicinity of the truck shortly after the fire began.

SPD have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively seeking further information. SPD is asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area or who has additional details about the individual spotted fleeing the scene to come forward.

Kansas polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, though some counties may open earlier. Voters who are in line when polls close will still be permitted to cast their ballots. Schwab advises voters to be prepared for longer wait times during peak hours in the early morning, lunchtime, and after 5 p.m.

Secretary of State Schwab provides Election Day tips for Kansas voters

On Saturday The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) issued a boil water advisory for the City of Bennington public water supply system in Ottawa County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice: Boil water for one minute before drinking or preparing food or use bottled water. Dispose of ice cubes and avoid using ice from a household automatic icemaker. If tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled; however, supervise children to prevent ingestion, and persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on November 2 and will remain in effect until the conditions that put the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory due to a loss of pressure caused by a power fluctuation. Failure to maintain adequate pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory, regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE initially announced the advisory.

Boil Water Advisory still in effect for the City of Bennington, Ottawa County

In life, when we choose to avoid hard things, we often miss out on growth and transformation.&nbsp; Honoring what is hard, rather than avoiding it, fosters our growth—and nature has a way of teaching us this lesson.&nbsp; The process of decomposition, while not glamorous, is actually quite miraculous.&nbsp; It is transformation through decay.&nbsp; What looks like waste is turned into raw materials for explosive new growth.

This kind of transformation is the beauty of the process gardeners call composting.&nbsp; Composting teaches us a lot about ourselves and allows us to be tangibly and personally involved in guiding this cycle of nature to happen.

Now is a great time to begin.&nbsp; Leaves are falling here in central Kansas, and this free ‘waste’ material is a precious organic matter resource that can be transformed into the very best soil amendment. Instead of bagging leaves for disposal, gather them for composting.

Composting leaves mimics nature’s decomposition process in forests and returns essential nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Adding composted leaves to garden soil next spring will improve its water-holding capacity, structure, microbial life, fertility, and more.

The magic of leaf composting lies in the unseen work of microbes. Bacteria and fungi feast on the "browns" (carbon-rich materials like leaves) and "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like kitchen scraps or grass clippings) in the compost pile. These microbes break down tough plant structures, like cellulose, into nutrients and simpler compounds that plants can use.

The microbes generate heat as they feed, often raising the pile’s temperature to 90–140°F. This warmth speeds up decomposition and eliminates many weed seeds and pathogens that could hinder future plant growth.

Through their activity, microbes release essential nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium—in forms plants can easily absorb, enriching the soil for future plants. When decomposition is complete, these hardworking microbes leave behind humus, a rich, stable substance that improves soil structure and moisture retention. Often called "black gold" by gardeners, humus is the ideal soil amendment for gardens, landscape beds, and containers.

One decisive takeaway from composting is that leaves cannot transform independently; they require help from microbes.&nbsp; This is a good lesson for our growth and transformation in life- we can’t do it without help, either. &nbsp;A good question is, who are the 1-3 people I can trust to help me grow?&nbsp; It’s time to find them.

 </figure>By JASON GRAVES K-State Research and Extension Central District&nbsp;HorticulturistIn life, when we choose to avoid hard things, we often miss out on growth and transformation.&nbsp; Honoring what is hard, rather than avoiding it, fosters our growth—and nature has a way of teaching us this lesson.&nbsp; The process of decomposition, while not glamorous, is actually quite miraculous.&nbsp; It is transformation through decay.&nbsp; What looks like waste is turned into raw materials for explosive new growth.This kind of transformation is the beauty of the process gardeners call composting.&nbsp; Composting teaches us a lot about ourselves and allows us to be tangibly and personally involved in guiding this cycle of nature to happen.Now is a great time to begin.&nbsp; Leaves are falling here in central Kansas, and this free ‘waste’ material is a precious organic matter resource that can be transformed into the very best soil amendment. Instead of bagging leaves for disposal, gather them for composting.Composting leaves mimics nature’s decomposition process in forests and returns essential nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Adding composted leaves to garden soil next spring will improve its water-holding capacity, structure, microbial life, fertility, and more.How microbes helpThe magic of leaf composting lies in the unseen work of microbes. Bacteria and fungi feast on the "browns" (carbon-rich materials like leaves) and "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like kitchen scraps or grass clippings) in the compost pile. These microbes break down tough plant structures, like cellulose, into nutrients and simpler compounds that plants can use.The microbes generate heat as they feed, often raising the pile’s temperature to 90–140°F. This warmth speeds up decomposition and eliminates many weed seeds and pathogens that could hinder future plant growth.Through their activity, microbes release essential nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium—in forms plants can easily absorb, enriching the soil for future plants. When decomposition is complete, these hardworking microbes leave behind humus, a rich, stable substance that improves soil structure and moisture retention. GRAVES: The Beauty of Decomposition

On Nov. 2 more than 5,200 runners participated in the largest marathon event in Kansas. RaceRaves, one of the nation's leading online race review communities, lists the Salina Crossroads Marathon as one of the nation's "Top Rated" races. This distinction is only given to 3% of race events.&nbsp;

Runners from all 50 states and countries, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Mexico, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, lined up on November 2 to take on the 26.2-mile course in the rain.

Nearly 200 members of Team Take Down, an African American running club with members worldwide, will participate in the marathon in Salina.

Last year’s race generated $1,020,000 in economic impact and raised $35,700 for local organizations, including the Salina Burn Track and Field Club, Salina Family YMCA, Kansas Youth Sports, Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Initiative, and the School Marathon Foundation. Thanks to over 50 sponsors and supporters, the marathon directs 100% of race entry fees to local nonprofits.

A special thank you goes out to the City of Salina, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, Salina Downtown Inc., our sponsors, and the 250+ volunteers who have helped make this marathon the largest in Kansas in just three years. We’re excited for the economic boost that visitors will bring and the opportunity to showcase the beauty of Salina. The lead car for the 2024 Salina Crossroads Marathon is a 1974 DeTomaso Pantera, an Italian-designed supercar powered by a 351 CID V8. Special thanks to The Garage for providing this year’s lead car.

Over 5,200 registered runners from all 50 states and international locations.

Three events have over 1,000 runners each: the half marathon (2,656), marathon (1,123), and 5K (1,059).

The 2023 marathon held the highest percentage of Boston Marathon qualifiers in Kansas.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon began as a vision by local runners Chris Lehecka and Daniel Craig to bring a high-quality marathon to Salina. Salina holds largest marathon in Kansas despite rainy conditions

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission has received a report that an individual claiming to be working with the KCC is calling utility customers and offering a 30% discount on their electric bills. 

Based on what has been reported, the caller asks about Medicare or Medicaid eligibility, then asks for a credit card so the refund can be applied.

This individual is not affiliated with the KCC and the agency urges consumers to use caution if they receive a call. 

Above all, if you receive a call like this, do not provide credit card information. 

More information will be released if it becomes available.

Boil Water Advisory Issued for Sundowner Inc., Saline County

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the Sundowner Inc. public water supply system located in Saline County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. 

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

 Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on October 31 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.
