SMITH COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 5p.m. Friday in Smith County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle driven by&nbsp; &nbsp; Mark&nbsp; Hollenbeck, 70, Parker, Nebraska, was eastbound on U.S. 36 just east of U.S. 281. The motorcycle struck a trailer pulled by a 2014 Chevy Silverado driven by Dale Herrington, 73, Holdrege, Nebraska, who had slowed to turn north into a cemetery.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Hollenbeck was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Simmons Rentschler Mortuary.&nbsp; Herrington and three passengers in the pickup were not injured. Hollenbeck was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

SALINE COUNTY — A small earthquake shook central Kansas on Saturday.

Just before 4:30p.m., a quake measuring a magnitude 3.4 rattled portions of rural Saline County approximately 4.3 miles east of Assaria, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There are no reports of damage and no calls about the quake, according to the Saline County Sheriff's office.

WILSON — Kansas Originals, after 37 years of selling arts, crafts, books, and Kansas-made food products, is facing the demolition of its building and supporters thought it might be the end of the store and its mission.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/925f00e0-e00a-49cb-98b3-acfc1aeb3dd3">Although the building at exit 206 of Interstate 70 is still slated for demolition to make way for a new truck stop</a>, Kansas Originals has found a new home.

The store will close its off-interstate location on Sept. 30 and open on Oct. 1 at 2519 Ave. E in downtown Wilson.

Marge Lawson, Kansas Orginals CEO, said the new location will have a smaller showroom, but the nonprofit will have off-site storage to make up some of the difference.

The new location will have the same events as the former, including tastings of Kansas wines and events to meet local artisans.

"We're going to make it even better," Lawson said.

The nonprofit that operates the store owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The building is set to be demolished on Nov. 30, Lawson said.

The Kansas Originals board is also pursuing satellite shops. The nonprofit is exploring a partnership with travel centers along the interstate. The organization had a satellite shop in the Topeka travel center until the pandemic hit in 2020.

However, she said because many of the crafts are handmade, inventory is limited.

The store will also likely add new signage to direct people from the interstate to the new store in Wilson.

Lawson, who was a co-founder of the Kansas Orginals, said she is thrilled the mission of the shop will continue.

She explained that mission in a letter to the Hays Post in May, "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

According to&nbsp;Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals, more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations since its founding.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters, as well as the local artisans and craftspeople who donate their work to fundraisers.

Kansas Originals will join other tourist stops in Wilson, and Lawson said she hopes the store will draw more visitors to the community of about 800.

Wilson proudly promotes its Czech heritage, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelks.com/listing/worlds-largest-czech-egg/41977/">world's largest Czech egg</a>&nbsp;and an annual&nbsp;<a href="https://wilsonczechfest.com/">After Harvest Czech Festival</a>&nbsp;that was celebrated last weekend.

It is also the home of the historic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.midlandrailroadhotel.com/">Midland Railroad Hotel</a>, and t<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/faccd0a7-80dc-4f2f-99f8-e084f88cb981">he community has rallied to create an outdoor entertainment venue from its former historic opera house, which burned in 2009.</a>

That new venue will open later this month.

When the nonprofit was first notified of the developers' plans, Lawson said she was afraid Kansas Originals might be forced to close. Now, she's looking toward the future.

"Yes. I am happy," she said. "It's going to be challenging, but it gives us exciting new opportunities."

Kansas Originals finds new home

Saline County Health Department, Salina Regional Health Center

New and expectant parents in Saline County and surrounding areas are invited to attend the 'Salina Area Community Baby Shower' from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm&nbsp;on Tuesday, September 9th at Salina Regional Health Center&nbsp;(400 S. Santa Fe Ave) in Conference Rooms 6 and 7.

This free event will feature speakers sharing expert advice on newborn care, safe sleep practices, breastfeeding support, maternal mental health, smoking cessation and overall maternal wellness. The event is a designated KIDS SAFE Sleep event approved by the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network.

Attendees will have a chance to receive gift baskets, diapers, baby wipes and more. Several organizations will provide community resources and educational materials. Refreshments, including cookies and tea, will be served.

This marks the first year the baby shower is being hosted through a joint effort between the Saline County Health Department and Salina Regional Health Center.

The 2025 Tri-Rivers Fair has officially begun and event-goers are enjoying the weather, animals, food and its tropical theme "Fairadise," as the Fair President gives comments/thoughts about the weekend so far.

With the Tri-Rivers Fair taking its full course, Salina Post visited with Fair President, Eric Blomquist about how he thinks the weekend is going so far.&nbsp;

"The fair has been going great and the weather is just perfect for the animals and people," said Blomquist. "We had a good turnout at the parade and it's been a real good start to the weekend and we are looking to finish strong."

When asked about the tropical theme "Fairadise," he commented that it has been 'a little slow to catch on, but everyone is buying into it.' Blomquist wanted to push this theme very much specifically this year, as a 'community and family driven event.'

"We really pushed it this year and our focus as a fair board has really been community and family, which is what 4-H is all about," he said.

Agriculture is the main investment that is put into the fair each year. Blomquist described they want kids who attend to obtain the most when it comes to the educational aspect.

"People do not realize this is a year long investment for most of these kids and some of which have thousands of dollars invested," he said. "All of the kids love to talk about their projects. You can go into the 4-H building and you have vegetables, flowers, legos, bb-guns, crops, cooking and so much for 4-H that helps generate the young kids into young adults."

The FFA Ell-Saline petting zoo has been one of the favorites. Animals range from horses, calves, donkeys and chickens that can be petted. Blomquist stated that people can learn from these tamed animals on what it takes to raise them and how they live.

"Kids who are not used to the animals can talk to many people and they will be glad to help, because everyone wants to push agriculture and inform them about what they are doing," Blomquist commented.

With the change of the fair starting a week earlier at the end of July through the start of August, Blomquist stated the adjustment has been going 'smoothly.'&nbsp;

"This was done to bring more families closer together," he said. "With opening a week earlier, it has surely helped alot of families because we are not pushing it closer to school. We are learning, growing and we are glad to get input from others."

According to the US National Weather Service, heat index values during the afternoon and early evening for Monday and Tuesday, July 29th are expected to be in the 102 to 109 degree range. Salina is expected to reach a heat index of 106 for Monday, and 105 for Tuesday.

The US National Weather Service advises everyone to be sure to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during the afternoon hours.

According to the US National Weather Service, on Thursday Salina has been a issued a 'Flood Watch' for this evening. Reportedly, heavy rainfall is expected to develop into the afternoon and becoming more widespread overnight, with rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour possible.

Be aware on the roads as 'Flash Flooding' is likely, according to the US National Weather Service.&nbsp;The highest flooding risk period will occur from late this afternoon through Friday morning.&nbsp;If water begins rising near your location,&nbsp;immediately seek higher ground. 

Saline County Emergency Management states that the main concerns are low water crossings and low-lying areas, where it's difficult to see the shoulder of the road. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, especially in areas known to flood frequently.

Saline County Emergency Management has listed the flood stages for certain areas:

Mulberry Creek near Salina:&nbsp;Forecasted to crest above flood stage at 24.75 feet overnight. Exercise extreme caution around waterways and low-lying areas.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor:&nbsp;Expected crest at 17.87 feet, nearing moderate flood levels. Avoid areas prone to flooding.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria:&nbsp;Projected crest at 23.59 feet tonight, causing minor flooding. Monitor conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground.

Everyone is encouraged to stay alert and monitor weather conditions closely.

'Flood Watch' issued in Salina for Thursday evening, heavy rainfall expected in the afternoon

Another round of storms are anticipated to occur on Wednesday evening, after the flooding from Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), a round of storms are anticipated for Wednesday evening with the best chances occurring across central Kansas. Reportedly, the strongest storms may produce wind gusts near 60 mph and heavy rainfall.

Salina is depicted to have a 30-60% chance of storms for Wednesday night.

LINCOLN COUNTY &amp; SALINE COUNTY - The US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) has issued a flash flood warning for northern Lincoln County until late Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), north Lincoln County is under a flash flood warning until 11:45 pm. Reportedly, radar is estimating 4 to 6 inches of rainfall across northern Lincoln county between Barnard and Lincoln.&nbsp;The storms are nearly stationary with more heavy rainfall likely.

The US National Weather Service stated this flash flood warning is a "very dangerous flooding situation" and to not drive in flooded areas. They are advising people to report any&nbsp;flooding problems to local officials.

According to the US National Weather Service, northwest Saline County is under a "high risk" of flash flooding,&nbsp;especially near the town of Glendale with slow moving thunderstorms producing 4 to 5 inches of rainfall.

Saline County Emergency Management advises people in the Saline County area to stay home during this flash flood warning. Saline County Emergency Management has stated the following:

Avoid low-lying areas and roads near creeks or ditches.

Keep headlights on and drive slowly if travel is absolutely necessary.&nbsp;

Please do not risk your safety or the safety of emergency responders.

Flash flood warning issued for northern Lincoln County and high risk for northwest Saline County

The US National Weather Service has issued an 'extreme heat warning' for Central Kansas until Wednesday evening.

According to the&nbsp;US National Weather Service, on Saturday, July 19th an 'extreme heat warning' was issued to be in effect from now until Wednesday evening (July 23rd). Heat indices were reported to be as high as 110 degrees, with high's being over 100 degrees. 

It was reported that humidity will also remain in place through this period, which will make it feel even hotter. Chances of showers and storms could occur through the week, with the best chances occurring on Thursday, July 24th.

Work outdoors early or late in the day, and take breaks in the shade as often as possible

Check up on the elderly, sick and those without A/C

Never leave children or pets unattended in your vehicles ('look before you lock')

Extreme heat warning issued in Central Kansas until Wednesday evening

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A man who randoly shot at vehicles on a Kansas highway in 2024 is going to avoid any further jail time.

On Monday, Sedgwick County Judge Christopher Magana sentenced 21-year-old Kamil Lweno of Wichita to probation, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Lweno was charged with three counts of criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, and criminal damage to property, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In March of 2024, police&nbsp;responded to reports of a suspicious individual wielding a weapon in the vicinity of Interstate 235 and Central in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

Callers reported gunshots and observed a man walking along the median of the highway shooting a gun.

Simultaneously, officers were dispatched to an undisclosed accident scene near 1900 N Westdale, where they discovered a Gray Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in a single-vehicle collision, abandoned at the scene.

Upon arrival in the area, officers apprehended a man later identified as Kamil Lweno in the 1800 block of N. Interstate 235, matching the description of the suspected shooter.

Police took him into custody without resistance. Subsequent investigation revealed the shooting suspect as the registered owner of the abandoned vehicle.

Law enforcement officers recovered a firearm and multiple spent cartridge casings. During the investigation, officers identified three individuals who reported their vehicles being targets of gunfire during the incident. The victims, a 28-year-old man, an 18-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, were unrelated to each other or the suspect. There were no reported injuries.

Surprise sentence for man who randomly shot at cars on Kan. highway

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just after 4:30p.m. Friday, patrol officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Benton on a reported shooting, according to Officer Phil DiMartino.

As officers arrived they were directed to the intersection of 8th and Benton, just to the east. There they located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.&nbsp; KCFD personnel responded and medics pronounced the victim deceased on scene. This is being investigated as a homicide, and a subject of interest was taken into custody pending further investigation.&nbsp;

 Preliminary information revealed there was an altercation between multiple people that led to shots being fired and the victim being struck. Police have not released the name of the victim.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials have told more than a half-dozen of the nation’s top medical organizations that they will no longer help establish vaccination recommendations.

The government told the organizations on Thursday via email that their experts are being disinvited from the workgroups that have been the backbone of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

The organizations include the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

“I’m concerned and distressed,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University vaccine expert who for decades has been involved with ACIP and its workgroups.

He said the move will likely propel a confusing fragmentation of vaccine guidance, as patients may hear the government say one thing and hear their doctors say another.

One email said the organizations are “special interest groups and therefore are expected to have a ‘bias’ based on their constituency and/or population that they represent.”

A federal health official on Friday confirmed the action, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

The decision was the latest development in what has become a saga involving the ACIP. The committee, created in 1964, makes recommendations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how vaccines that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration should be used.

CDC directors have traditionally almost always approved those recommendations, which are widely heeded by doctors and greenlight insurance coverage for shots.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was a leading voice in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rfk-jr-vaccine-trump-science-autism-9b99621b01f11b7f0bdc81e5a0b82d2b">anti-vaccine movement</a>&nbsp;before becoming the U.S. government’s top health official, and in June&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kennedy-cdc-acip-vaccines-3790c89f45b6314c5c7b686db0e3a8f9">abruptly fired</a>&nbsp;the entire ACIP after accusing them of being too closely aligned with manufacturers. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cdc-acip-vaccine-committee-9f58e1f004075b081718ff078de88d76">handpicked replacements</a>&nbsp;that include several vaccine skeptics.

The workgroups typically include committee members and experts from medical and scientific organizations. At workgroup meetings, members evaluate data from vaccine manufacturers and the CDC, and formulate vaccination recommendation proposals to be presented to the full committee.

The structure was created for several reasons, Schaffner said. The professional groups provide input about what might and might not be possible for doctors to implement. And it helped build respect and trust in ACIP recommendations, having the buy-in of respected medical organizations, he said.

Workgroup members are vetted for conflicts of interest, to make sure than no one who had, say, made money from working on a hepatitis vaccine was placed on the hepatitis committee, Schaffner noted.

Also disinvited from the groups were the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Geriatrics Society, the American Osteopathic Association, the National Medical Association and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

In a joint statement Friday, the AMA and several of the other organizations said: “To remove our deep medical expertise from this vital and once transparent process is irresponsible, dangerous to our nation’s health, and will further undermine public and clinician trust in vaccines.”

They urged the administration to reconsider the move “so we can continue to feel confident in its vaccine recommendations for our patients.”

Some of the professional organizations have criticized Kennedy’s changes to the ACIP, and three of the disinvited groups last month joined&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuit-vaccines-kennedy-95a1aa23c3f015f7a35a570f5ef8da36">a lawsuit</a>&nbsp;against the government over Kennedy’s decision to stop recommending COVID-19 vaccines for most children and pregnant women.

In a social media post Friday, one of the Kennedy-appointed ACIP members — Retsef Levi — wrote that the working groups “will engage experts from even broader set of disciplines!”

Levi, a business management professor, also wrote that working group membership “will be based on merit &amp; expertise — not membership in organizations proven to have (conflicts of interest) and radical &amp; narrow view of public health!”

HHS officials have not said which people are going to be added to the ACIP workgroups.

AMA and other medical associations are kicked out of CDC vaccine workgroups

TOPEKA — A Kansas woman owes more than $21,000 in late fees for failing to pay her rent in 2020, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled last week.

Sherri Foster rented a Prairie Village house in November 2018, paying $1,900 per month in rent to John Schutt. Schutt also employed Foster to work on renovations of rental properties, attorney Jadh Kerr told Supreme Court justices.&nbsp;

“The lease had a late-fee provision that $20 for each day was due for rents that remain unpaid after the due date, which is the first of the month,” Kerr said.&nbsp;

Foster did not pay rent for three months in early 2020, but she and Schutt agreed to bring her current as of June 2020, Kerr said. Foster again missed three months of rent, which ultimately brought the two before the Johnson County District Court.&nbsp;

“Normally, under a landlord-tenant action, you would go to trial within 14 days,” Kerr said. “That did not happen here. It took from September of 2020 to March 2 of 2023 for this case to get to trial.”

The district court ruled that Foster owed $5,700 in unpaid rent and $21,240 in late fees, which was calculated by assessing $20 per day for 1,062 days between the first missed rent payment and the judgment date.

However, Schutt also owed Foster $545 for failing to pay her for managing construction work on his rental properties, according to court documents.

Foster’s attorney Eric Kraft appealed the district court ruling to the Kansas Court of Appeals, claiming that $21,000 in late fees was “unconscionable,” a legal term meaning a contract is so unfair or oppressive for one party that it offends the conscience of the court. In Kansas, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/consumer-protection-kansas#:~:text=THE%20KANSAS%20CONSUMER%20PROTECTION%20ACT,CONSUMERS%20HOW%20TO%20OBTAIN%20REDRESS." target="_blank">Consumer Protection Law</a>&nbsp;focuses on “misleading, deceptive and unconscionable trade practices.”

The appeals court agreed with Foster and lowered the late fee assessment to $1,700, which covered the days between when Foster failed to pay her rent and when the case went before the district court. But Schutt then appealed that decision to the Kansas Supreme Court.

Kraft said the district court judge, John McEntee, was new, and Kraft believed the former judge in district court would have limited the late fees.

“As much as we try to protect the tenants in the landlord and tenant act, this smacks that completely upside down,” Kraft told the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

While Supreme Court justices peppered Schutt’s lawyer with questions about the fairness of late fees accruing through an unusually long court proceeding, they ultimately found in favor of Schutt.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://searchdro.kscourts.gov/documents/pdf/caseDecisions/e8a35794-dc62-47c6-9184-09c89c4b9bda_126555.pdf" target="_blank">unanimous decision</a>&nbsp;from the Supreme Court reversed the appeals court’s decision. It said that Foster did not appropriately raise the issue of unconscionability, and the Court of Appeals should not have taken that into account when reversing the district court’s initial decision.&nbsp;
