As&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;has experienced historic growth, its leader is being recognized for her innovative influence in successfully transforming the campus into a national leader of aerospace and technology education.

Alysia Starkey has been inducted into the Kansas Aviation Museum Hall of Fame, joining three other inductees for 2025.

Starkey, who has been the K-State Salina CEO and dean since 2019, has overseen the campus transition into a holistic aerospace and technology leader. 

While K-State Salina is still recognized for its elite training of aircraft pilots, the campus has expanded its focus on industry needs in recent years. This&nbsp;shift meets&nbsp;all needs of the aerospace industry, including the need for qualified aviation mechanics to ensure airworthiness,&nbsp;and a new emphasis in advanced air mobility, an emerging focus on autonomous systems to solve delivery and transit problems and revolutionize air transportation.

Thanks to Starkey’s dynamic vision and proactive leadership at K-State Salina, the campus is aligning itself to support advancements in technology and industry. A key component of this mission is not only offering undergraduate degrees but also providing education and technical training at the graduate and professional levels. 

Expanding the number of learners K-State Salina serves fulfills growing needs from industry and impacts the growth of aviation in the state of Kansas.

“To be inducted into the Kansas Aviation Museum Hall of Fame Class of 2025 is an incredible honor,” said Starkey. “The state of Kansas has a rich aviation history — arguably the best in the country. To be selected with other leaders and innovators who came before me is greatly humbling. There are so many people to thank who have helped me along the way and who have believed in our mission at K-State Salina — a one-of-a-kind destination campus that offers truly unique learning experiences, through the latest technologies that revolve around real-world, industry-guided application and leading the way in aviation and technology education.”

In 2021, then K-State president, Ret. Gen. Richard Myers, recognized the Salina campus’s unique position as a premier education beacon of aviation excellence. Myers put Starkey in charge of leading a new, one-of-a-kind mission that would revolutionize the aerospace industry in Kansas and beyond.

The Global Aeronautics Initiative aimed to make the K-State Salina campus a global aerospace leader. Starkey would establish K-State Salina as the first campus solely dedicated to the aerospace and technology industries, because of conversations with more than 150 corporate partners and collaborations with the Salina Airport Authority, Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and the Salina Community Economic Development Organization. 

The campus refined its mission to be dedicated to serving all career entry points in aerospace and technology fields.

“Dr. Starkey’s leadership and accomplishments have positively impacted state, national and global aerospace individuals and businesses,” said Tim Rogers, former executive director of the Salina Airport Authority. “Her diligence resulted in bringing together a coalition of local, state, national and international aerospace focused stakeholders to implement the K-State Global Aeronautics Initiative. Her career has not only significantly impacted the growth of aerospace in Kansas, but the entire United States.”

Because of this initiative, Starkey propelled K-State Salina to the forefront of the aerospace and technology industries by securing more than $160 million in federal, state and private contributions to the campus. The bulk of the donations are going toward a complete transformation of the southern end of the K-State Salina campus.

These fundraising and corporate engagement successes have also coincided with many other successes thanks to Starkey’s leadership including a complete curriculum redesign for the college, establishing new degrees and training programs dedicated to the future of aerospace careers, as well as record enrollment and improved graduation rates over the past seven years at K-State Salina.

“Starkey is not only a transformative leader within the Kansas State University system, but also a strategic thinker whose work will have a lasting impact on our institution, region and the broader aerospace industry,” said K-State President Richard Linton. “Her achievements exemplify the values and goals set forth in K-State’s strategic plan, and her vision for the future ensures K-State Salina will remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence.”

It didn’t take long before Starkey’s efforts during the Global Aeronautics Initiative bore tremendous results.

By 2022, K-State Salina built upon an already decade’s long partnership with California-based company, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Through Starkey’s vision, K-State Salina received the largest corporate gift in the campus’s history from General Atomics to create the new General Atomics Aerospace Innovation Ramp at the K-State Salina campus.

The record $10 million gift allowed K-State Salina to revitalize and transform its footprint, while also enhancing the campus’s learning environment to keep up with the needs of industry.

"We have been working with K-State Salina for several years and recognize that now is the time to invest in the campus," said General Atomics CEO Linden Blue&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/news/newsreleases/2022-10/salina-general-atomics-donation10522.html">in 2022 at the time of the donation</a>. "Their campus has a laser-focused vision to be a leader in aerospace and technology, and we are ready to support them in this vision. As General Atomics looks to the future of the aerospace industry, we are proud to have K-State Salina as our educational partner."

The following year, K-State Salina announced another historic success under Starkey’s guidance. The campus would be teaming up with another California-based company, one that specializes&nbsp;in entertainment technology and spatial computing, Pure Imagination Studios.

The partnership with Pure Imagination is resulting in the construction of the Kansas Artificial Intelligence Research and Entertainment Studio, or K-AIRES, a $41 million, 47,500-square-foot facility that will house virtual reality, or VR, augmented reality, or AR, and other emerging technology education. K-AIRES will be a studio and training facility for researchers and academics interested in spatial computing and the new corporate home for Pure Imagine. Construction has already begun on this new facility and plans to be completed by 2026. K-AIRES will put K-State Salina at the forefront of the technology industry.

“Starkey’s belief in the future of aerospace and spatial computing, her tireless pursuit of opportunity and her passion for elevating Kansas as a national leader in aviation and emerging technologies are what brought this project to life,” Josh Wexler, Pure Imagination Studios CEO, said. “Quite frankly, without her, it would not exist.”

The successes didn’t stop for Starkey with implementation of the General Atomics Aerospace Innovation Ramp and K-AIRES. In 2024, the campus announced that it had obtained a third major investment in as many years and announced the Aerospace Education Hub, thanks to $33 million in federal funding and support from U.S. Senator from Kansas, Jerry Moran, who is also a 2025 inductee into the Kansas Aviation Museum Hall of Fame.

The new facility will again transform education at K-State Salina and be the new educational home for the campus’s aviation maintenance, composites and uncrewed aircraft systems programs. These modernized state-of-the-art facilities are critical when it comes to K-State Salina's dedication to develop graduates who are prepared to innovate, problem-solve and lead industry into the future.The federal funding secured also included a separate $5.5 million grant to provide aviation training equipment to amplify the pilot training partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.

The Aerospace Education Hub is scheduled to open in 2027.

Starkey’s more than 20-year tenure at K-State Salina began in 2002. At the time, her passion was in library services and technology, having earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Fort Hays State University in 2001 and a master’s in library science from the University of North Texas in 2002. She started out as a technical services/automation coordinator and assistant professor at K-State Salina.

By 2007, Starkey had received her first promotion in the K-State system, advancing to library director and associate professor. It was after this promotion, where Starkey’s career in leadership began to take off.

She was promoted to assistant dean of academics and distance education, while still retaining her director of libraries title in 2010. In 2012, she was named the associate dean of academics/undergraduate students while also being promoted to a full professor in 2014. Starkey then gained additional duties of acting director for the School of Integrated Studies in 2016 and then associate dean of academics and acting director of professional education and outreach in 2017.

In 2018, the K-State Salina campus was in search for a new leader and a freshened identity. Initially, Starkey was given the interim title as CEO and dean while the university conducted a national search for a permanent leader. However, after more than a year in the interim role, Starkey was able to prove herself as a trusted and effective leader and was chosen to be the full-time CEO and dean of the campus.

Starkey’s tenure as K-State Salina’s leader has proven to be a resounding success. She has secured more than $160 million in strategic investments, launched a new strategic plan that will continue the Global Aeronautics Initiative, led the campus through exponential enrollment gains, overseen the construction of the campus’s third residence hall and many more successful initiatives.

From growing up in Colby to a completely revitalized and reimagined vision for the K-State Salina campus, Starkey has led K-State Salina into a position where the campus will be recognized as a one-of-a-kind destination for aerospace and technology innovation and education.

“Dr. Starkey is a visionary leader who has excelled at amplifying aviation education and partnering with industry and governmental leaders to expand Kansas’s impact as an aerospace leader,” said Kirsten Regan, executive director of strategic initiatives. “Her work has transformed K-State Salina, honoring the tradition of the college while also looking ahead and expanding partnerships, expertise and facilities to lead the future of aerospace. Her collaboration and foresight has impacted the Salina community and state that will be felt for generations. Her ability to foster learning, advancement, and economic growth is a testament to her abilities. She is most deserving to be recognized for her commitment and contribution to aviation in Kansas.”

During his annual report to the Kansas State Board of Education, Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson said preparing Kansas students for their postsecondary pursuits remains of utmost importance for putting students on a path for success after graduating from high school.

“The efforts to increase graduation rates while simultaneously preparing students academically and with hands-on skills will continue to increase students’ chances for postsecondary success and strengthen the state’s workforce,” Watson said.

Watson presented a draft of “Coherence,” the Kansas State Department of Education’s (KSDE) 2024-25 annual report on Tuesday to members of the Kansas State Board of Education during their monthly meeting in Topeka. He said the number of Kansas high school students enrolled in postsecondary courses has continued to grow since 2021, noting that 40,709 students took postsecondary courses during the 2024-25 school year. 

During the same school year, Kansas students earned a total of 366,007 dual credit postsecondary hours, an increase of 33,392 over the previous year. Data for the 2024-25 Advanced Placement (AP) exams are not yet available; however, results from the past three years show a steady and significant increase in the number of exams earning scores of 3, 4, or 5. In 2023-2024, this number increased to 12,240, an increase of nearly 3,000 from the previous year. Based on this upward trend, Kansas fully expects continued growth in AP achievement when the 2025 results are released.

The number of students taking career and technical education (CTE) classes in high school also continues to climb each year.

The Kansas State Board of Education’s strong commitment to improving literacy outcomes continues to drive progress across the state. Thanks to the State Board’s dedicated funding, more than 17,072 educators and administrators have completed or are currently enrolled in LETRS®&nbsp;structured literacy training aligned to the science of reading. This growing participation reflects Kansas’ ongoing effort to ensure every student receives high-quality reading instruction.

Kansas introduced an enhanced state assessment in 2025, and as is standard practice, cut scores were developed accordingly. Kansas educators coming together to set cut scores also afforded an opportunity to address what multiple measures have shown to be a long-standing misalignment between assessment scores and actual student performance. KSDE believes the new cut scores more accurately represent student performance.

The 2024-25 annual report celebrates a major milestone in strengthening Kansas’ educator workforce. Teacher vacancies have dropped by more than 450 statewide, a 21% decrease from spring 2024 to fall 2025. This marks one of the most significant improvements in recent years and reflects ongoing efforts to recruit and retain talented educators across the state. The number of Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP) cohort members has also significantly increased each year since 2023, further addressing the teacher pipeline issues experienced in Kansas and across the U.S.

Kansas schools see rise in dual credit, AP scores and career education participation

OCCK is partnering with the<a href="https://www.drckansas.org/"> Disability Rights Center of Kansas</a> (DRC Kansas) to host "The Power of Advocacy: From Awareness to Action," a three-part community series featuring Rocky Nichols, Executive Director of DRC Kansas.

As Kansas’ statewide agency for protecting and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, DRC Kansas empowers people, families and natural supports to navigate systems, understand new laws, and access services that promote independence and inclusion.

Each session will explore practical advocacy tools and current issues — including the new person-centered guardianship law taking effect in 2026, Medicaid rights and appeals, and strengthening natural supports such as families, caregivers, and community networks.

“We look forward to our advocacy presentation in Salina,” said Nichols. “We will cover everything from how people with disabilities and their supports can benefit from the new person-centered guardianship law and to use it to more effectively protect disability rights, to Medicaid rights and navigating Medicaid appeals, to Housing Rights, Assistive Technology, and the skills you need to better advocate for yourself as a Kansan with a disability.”

Every student’s journey to a bachelor’s degree looks different — and sometimes, students need help finding their unique paths. 

That’s why&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University</a>&nbsp;is partnering with technical colleges in two of its campus communities — Manhattan and Salina — to launch new, innovative programs that meet students where they are and ensure they have a pathway to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Under these new programs, the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/admissions/undergrad/manhattan/apply/other-applicant/mhk-pathway/">MHK Pathway program</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/admissions/apply/sln-pathway.html">SLN Pathway program</a>, eligible students who do not meet the academic requirements for admission to K-State as degree-seeking freshmen will be able to live in a K-State residence hall, participate in university programming and experience K-State student life their first year, all while completing courses concurrently at either&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://manhattantech.edu/">Manhattan Area Technical College</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://salinatech.edu/">Salina Area Technical College</a>.

Students will work toward K-State’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/admissions/undergrad/manhattan/apply/transfer/">transfer requirements</a>, ultimately continuing on at K-State with the completion of their bachelor’s degree within reach.

“The MHK and SLN Pathway programs are collectively just one way we demonstrate our commitment of educational access, as the programs have the potential to support hundreds of students each year who may not have believed a bachelor’s degree was within reach” said Jesse Perez Mendez, K-State provost and executive vice president. “This is all about creating opportunity, breaking down barriers and ensuring these students know their success matters to us.”

With burgeoning technological advancements, today’s corporations and businesses are evolving — and this evolution in business practices and structures is projected to drive demand for the types of skills that higher education degrees are known to develop.

According to a recent report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce titled "The Future of Good Jobs: Projections Through 2031,” 66% of “good jobs” by 2031 will require a bachelor’s degree.

In the report, a “good job” is defined as one that pays at least $43,000 and a median salary of $74,000 for workers ages 25–44; for workers ages 45–64, it is defined as a job that pays at least $55,000 and a median salary of $91,000. Salary numbers within the report are based on 2022 dollars.

“Making these socioeconomic boosting bachelor’s degrees possible for students within the Kansas communities where they live —or wish to live — is just one piece of the potential impact this initiative can generate,” said Richard Linton, K-State president.“Students can stay rooted within the communities that support them as they pursue their degrees and build the futures they are after, and maybe even one day, they will choose to give back to these places that helped shape them."

How Manhattan Tech and Salina Tech partnerships promote pathways to college

Under both the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/admissions/undergrad/manhattan/apply/other-applicant/mhk-pathway/">MHK Pathway program</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/admissions/apply/sln-pathway.html">Salina Pathway program</a>, students who apply for spring 2026 freshman admission to K-State but do not meet the academic requirements for admission will be reviewed for program eligibility. K-State will then extend invitations to its first cohort of MHK and SLN Pathway students to start the program in spring 2026.

While participating in these one-year programs, students will be required to take a minimum of three credit hours at K-State and nine transferable credit hours at Manhattan Tech or Salina Tech per semester during the fall and spring. They will do this while living in a K-State residence hall with full access to university programming and K-State student life.

Upon completing a minimum 24 cumulative college credit hours and earning a minimum 2.0 grade point average, MHK and SLN Pathway students will be eligible for admission to K-State as a transfer student for the following fall semester.

MHK and SLN Pathway students will pay tuition and fees for the respective courses taken at both K-State and either Manhattan Tech or Salina Tech. Students will be able to apply for financial aid for the program through their technical college of choice, who will process and award all federal and state financial aid during the students’ freshman year.

Manhattan Tech increases north central Kansas higher education access

Manhattan Tech, K-State’s partner in the Manhattan community, has a strong history of expanding educational access and a clear focus on workforce development and applied learning in high-demand fields.In 2024, Manhattan Tech&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://manhattantech.edu/news/2024/07/23/ribbon-cutting-for-advanced-technology-center">opened a 47,000-square-foot Advanced Technology Center</a>, doubling capacity in key programs such as Industrial Maintenance, Electrical, Plumbing, and Construction Technologies — all areas that align with K-State's strengths in in engineering, technology and applied sciences.

These new partnerships, in addition to the new MHK and SLN pathway programs, represent growth upon an already strong foundation of partnerships with Kansas community colleges.

KSU partners with Manhattan Tech & Salina Tech to expand higher education access for Kansas students

My name is Amy Freelove and I’m running for USD 305 School Board this November.

I was born, raised, and publicly educated in the near western suburbs of Chicago.

About 35 years ago I began my college education at The University of Kansas. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training. While my husband, Rob, was finishing his education and training, we moved around Kansas until we settled in Salina 25 years ago.

We were lucky to raise our kids here and send them through USD 305.&nbsp; While we raised our kids, I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home parent who volunteered in their classrooms, went on field trips, served on site councils, and was a team parent and Scout Leader. I volunteered in the Heusner Library, long after my kids had moved on from elementary school. I love books and reading and love seeing kids get excited about reading, too.&nbsp; When Salina was redrawing its boundaries, I was asked to be on the committee. I learned a lot during that process, and am proud of the work we did. In 2012 I completed my Master Gardener training and have been an active member since then.

Even though I have worked outside of our home, raising our children to be successful, thoughtful and kind humans is definitely my biggest accomplishment.&nbsp; Our daughter, Mary, graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with her Bachelor of Fine Arts.&nbsp; She is an artist and Art Director at a publisher in Chicago.&nbsp; Our son, Lukas, is a recent K-State grad with a Masters in Landscape Architecture.&nbsp; He’s a Landscape Designer in Boston.&nbsp; And while I know I have invested in my children, I also believe Salina schools and teachers have as well. Our children wouldn’t be who they are today without all of us working together. All children deserve that support and investment.

I believe all children should have a public education available and accessible to them.&nbsp; We must invest in and support our children. Teachers are an integral part of a good education. We must invest in and support them as well.

A healthy public school system in Salina, where people know their children can learn, grow, and build a foundation for success, makes for a thriving Salina. A strong and vital Salina helps ensure our community can not only continue to entice new businesses, people, and teachers, but also help our young citizens want to return and stay.

Most importantly, I believe our leaders and decision-makers must be level-headed, good listeners who are able to listen without judgment, be flexible, and work towards solutions that work for everyone.&nbsp; Generally, I am not a person who is comfortable being in front. Much of my life I have been a supportive behind-the-scenes person, and I’m good at it. I’ve learned over the years that being a good support person requires all the qualities a good leader needs.&nbsp; Anyone who knows me well would say that I am a smart, thoughtful, kind, level-headed and capable person; driven by compassion and common sense.&nbsp; 

I believe those attributes would allow me to serve the USD 305 School Board well.

For the second straight year, Kansas Wesleyan will hold its "School Days" initiative." 

The program kicks off Saturday, November 8 and will see KWU provide two free tickets to designated games for students, educators, administrators and staff in particular school districts.

“Community is such an important part of our success at Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president. “It’s our pleasure to continue to give back and, in the process, hopefully create some new Coyote fans!”

Saturday, November 8 marks Saline County Education Day as KWU football takes on McPherson. All associated with USD 305, homeschools in the county or Saline County private schools are eligible for a pair of free tickets to this critical divisional matchup.

The scene shifts to basketball on&nbsp;Saturday, November 15 for USD 305 Night, and Homeschool Night follows on Saturday,&nbsp;December 6, when KWU faces Friends.

Saline County Private Schools night is Saturday,&nbsp;December 13, and USDs 239 and 240 will be eligible for tickets at Ottawa County Schools Night on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Southeast of Saline Night is on Saturday, January 17, 2026.&nbsp;Ell-Saline Night is on Wednesday, January 28, 2026&nbsp;and Dickinson County Schools Night&nbsp;is on Saturday, February 7 to&nbsp;wrap up the planned events.

Dickinson County’s recognized schools will include USDs 481, 487, 435, 473 and 393.

School Days promotions for basketball games are valid for one or both of the day’s contests.

Tickets are available at the gate only. The use of USD IDs, where applicable, is appreciated but not required.

KWU to resume School Days Initiative November 8

LINDSBORG - A Maine and Florida resident, John Goff will present a guest lecture and slideshow titled "Growing Up Greenough" at the Sandzen Gallery (401 North First Street, Lindsborg, KS) on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00 pm.

The talk will cover the family story of Charles Pelham Greenough III (1908-1983), who became one of the chief organizers and benefactors of the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg. 

It will trace Pelham’s descent from many prominent old English and East Coast Greenoughs, along with his time growing up in Boston, Massachusetts. It also focuses on his aunt, Ethel Greenough Holmes (1879-1964) of Boston and Kansas City, and her association with the mobile, talented, and artistic Swedish American Birger, Alfrida, and Margaret Sandzen. 

“Aunt Ethel,” as she became known among the family, was initially an art student of Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) before she introduced her nephew Pelham to Sandzen’s daughter, Margaret (1909-1993). 

The presentation considers the growing and diverse art interests in both the Sandzen and Greenough families, as well as how these exceptional individuals helped Lindsborg become a distinguished art center.

The presenter, John Goff, is a retired architect and historian. He is also the grandson of Barbara Greenough Bradley (1913-2002), Pelham Greenough’s first cousin.

High School Sports LIVE STREAMS

This week, the Salina Family YMCA leadership team was honored to welcome Korleone Young, former NBA player and founder of the One and Done Foundation, for an inspiring and heartfelt conversation on leadership, community service and youth mentorship.

Young, who now dedicates his life to mentoring young people through his nonprofit organization, shared personal experiences and valuable lessons drawn from both his basketball career and his journey beyond the court. His foundation focuses on guiding young athletes not only in basketball but also in life skills and personal development, emphasizing that success goes far beyond the game.

Speaking to the leadership team, Young highlighted the importance of servant leadership, leading by example and putting others first, and the lasting impact mentorship can have on a child’s future.

“Being an athlete is a privilege,” Young said during his visit. “Giving back and teaching the youth is a rewarding experience that effects the community as a whole.”

His message resonated deeply with staff, reinforcing the YMCA’s mission to help guide the youth and being a positive beacon in the community. As the Y continues its work to strengthen community and support youth development, Young’s words will remain a meaningful source of inspiration.

Former NBA Player inspires Salina YMCA leadership team with powerful message on servant leadership

Over 30 high school students from Saline and Dickinson Counties, participated in this year's annual "Disability Mentoring Day."

On Wednesday, October 15 students with disabilities had the privilege to go on job tours around the Salina area. Those tours included sites such as,&nbsp;Martinelli’s, Crestwood, Schwan’s, City of Salina Fire Department, Salina Regional Health Center, Old Navy and the USD 305 Kitchen.

Throughout this event, the students had an opportunity to learn about different employers in the community and expectations for jobs in different industries.

This event was planned by members of the <a href="https://www.kansasyouthtransition.org/about/pilot-sites#:~:text=Salina%20(USD%20305),%2DETS)%2C%20and%20more!">Saline County Transition Council</a>.&nbsp;Disability Mentoring Day occurs nationwide in October, which is also during&nbsp;National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Various organizations partnered together to make this event happen. Those organizations included, <a href="https://indconnectinc.com/">Independent Connection Inc.</a>, <a href="https://occk.com/">OCCK Inc.</a>, <a href="https://www.dcf.ks.gov/services/RS/Pages/Employment-Services.aspx">Vocational Rehabilitation – Pre-ETS</a>, <a href="https://www.305ckcie.com/">USD 305/Central Kansas Cooperative in Education</a>, and other passionate community members as well.

"I enjoyed the experience, and I learned teamwork and communication skills," a commented student.

"I want to work for the fire department, and I am glad I learned how it all happens," a student said.

Youth Outreach Navigator for Independent Connection, Amanda Mong said this event helps students learn more about what job best suits them.

"I talked to alot of the students, and they are identifying jobs that they want to learn more about and what the next steps should be," she said.

Elyse Pfizenmaier from Independent Connection stated she saw all of the students were engaged.

"We went to the fire station with them and all of our students were really engaged and asking questions" she said. "It was just a good experience for them and the fire station were really active, engaging and super kind."

The Saline County Transition Council is dedicated to supporting youth and young adults with disabilities as they plan for life after high school. It is under the Kansas Youth Transition Network.

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a shooting and have two suspects in custody.

Just after 5:00 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a report of an armed disturbance in the 6500 block of Ballentine Street in the city of Shawnee, according to a media release. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that shots had been fired.

Two individuals were transported to local hospitals in stable condition. One man was shot, and a second man sustained injuries from a reported battery.

Both individuals are currently in police custody. Police released no additional details.

Police: 2 hospitalized and arrested after shooting at Kan. home

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — The U.S. Embassy in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/trinidad-and-tobago">Trinidad and Tobago</a>&nbsp;cautioned Americans on Saturday to stay away from American government facilities on the twin-island nation.

It was an unusual warning that came as tensions grow between the United States and Venezuela over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-maduro-drugs-venezuela-911-hegseth-3db3aafed492556bb9ca7de855c4849e">deadly U.S. strikes in Caribbean waters</a>&nbsp;targeting suspected drug traffickers.

The embassy didn’t specify why it issued the warning, saying only that, “due to a heightened state of alert, please avoid and refrain from visiting all U.S. government facilities through the holiday weekend,” as it urged people to “be aware of your surroundings.” Monday is a holiday to celebrate Diwali, a Hindu festival of lights widely celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago, where 35% of its 1.4 million people identify as East Indian.

Venezuela is located just miles away from Trinidad, where people in one coastal community&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-trinidad-us-strikes-fishermen-killed-286230c6e51deaa706fdb0d2837a7ca5">are mourning the disappearance</a>&nbsp;of two local fishermen believed killed in a U.S. strike on Tuesday.

The alert is based on threats directed at American citizens in the Caribbean nation, with U.S. authorities saying “it could be linked” to ongoing tensions in the region, Trinidad and Tobago’s minister of homeland security, Roger Alexander, told The Associated Press. However, local authorities declined to share specific details about the reported threats.

Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have responded to the threats by implementing security measures to deal with any situations that may arise, Alexander said.

With six strikes killing at least 29 people since early September, the tense situation in the region was mentioned by U.S. officials in a briefing with authorities in Trinidad and Tobago, Alexander said.

Following the most recent attack, the U.S. government&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-drug-smuggling-pentagon-strike-12820c173da3de80c1a7a559c252c743">took survivors into custody</a>, after the military struck a suspected drug-carrying vessel in the Caribbean, officials said Friday.

The Trump administration has said it considers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-cartels-armed-conflict-cb57804807e55a00ace60ad5f4d4f24d">alleged drug traffickers as unlawful combatants</a>&nbsp;who must be met with military force.

US Embassy issues unusual warning to Americans in Trinidad and Tobago

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas girl died in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Saturday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven by Randon Marqua Amaya-Lopez, 16, Wichita, was northbound on Interstate 135 at Kellogg. The SUV left the roadway to the right and struck a bridge pillar.

EMS transported a passenger in the vehicle identified as&nbsp; Belayna Garlen&nbsp; Amaya, 14, Wichita, to Wesley Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased. Amaya-Lopez also had serious injuries. The KHP did not report where or if he was transported for treatment. The teens were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

14-year-old Kansas girl killed when SUV strikes bridge pillar

WASHINGTON (AP) — Protesting the direction of the country under&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>, people gathered Saturday in the nation’s capital and communities big and small across the U.S. for “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/no-kings-protests-trump-immigration-first-amendment-f04e7a4728c10b694f540bcef0646370">No Kings</a>&nbsp;” demonstrations that the president's Republican Party disparaged as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7REVjTcBdc">“Hate America” rallies</a>.

With signs such as “Nothing is more patriotic than protesting” or “Resist Fascism,” in many places the events looked more like a street party. There were marching bands, a huge banner with the U.S. Constitution’s “We The People” preamble that people could sign, and demonstrators wearing inflatable costumes, particularly frogs, which have emerged as a sign of resistance in Portland, Oregon.

It was the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/photo-gallery/no-kings-protest-trump-us-b5de52994b7c592034fb19b7d3e9d577">third mass mobilization</a>&nbsp;since Trump's return to the White House and came against the backdrop of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/government-shutdown">government shutdown</a>&nbsp;that not only has closed federal&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-food-aid-snap-november-417bd9a473701b6334491c9e6e28a1c4">programs and services</a>&nbsp;but is testing the core balance of power, as an aggressive executive confronts&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-layoffs-trump-unions-b312b3ca77cbdbc72e778ece3b2cbffc">Congress and the courts</a>&nbsp;in ways that protest organizers warn are a slide toward authoritarianism.

Trump himself was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.

“They say they’re referring to me as a king. I’m not a king,” Trump said in a Fox News interview that aired early Friday, before he departed for a $1 million-per-plate MAGA Inc. fundraiser at his club.

Later Friday a Trump campaign social media account mocked the protests by posting a computer-generated video of the president clothed like a monarch, wearing a crown and waving from a balcony.

People packed into New York City's Times Square, Boston Common and Chicago's Grant Park; outside state capitols in several Republican-led states and a courthouse in Billings, Montana; and at hundreds of smaller public spaces.

In Washington, Iraq War Marine veteran Shawn Howard said he had never participated in a protest before but was motivated to show up because of what he sees as the Trump administration's “disregard for the law.” He said immigration detentions without due process and deployments of troops in U.S. cities are “un-American” and alarming signs of eroding democracy.

“I fought for freedom and against this kind of extremism abroad,” said Howard, who added that he also worked at the CIA for 20 years on counter-extremism operations. “And now I see a moment in America where we have extremists everywhere who are, in my opinion, pushing us to some kind of civil conflict.”
