MORRIS COUNT —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 5:30p.m. April 4, police stopped a vehicle in the 600 block of W. Main St.&nbsp; in Council Grove for for an alleged traffic violation.

During the stop, the&nbsp;Morris Co. Sheriff’s Office’s&nbsp;K-9 Kimber was deployed and alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle.

Following a probable cause search, deputies arrested the driver, 61-year-old Scott Berry of Council Grove, and a passenger identified as 24-year-old Wolphen Smith of Latimer.

Both were booked on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Michael D. Scheibler, 61, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023, at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 15, 1961, in Salina to Richard D. and Alta A. (Abrams) Scheibler.

He moved to Bennington when he was six months old and remained a lifelong Ottawa County resident. He was a 1979 graduate of Bennington High School and he then worked as a millwright for over 45 years. Michael enjoyed traveling, working with his hands, a good book, and his grandchildren. He was a “fix it guy” and there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard, whom he loved dearly.

Survivors are his wife Debra Scheibler; mother Alta Scheibler; daughters Rien (Jim) and Rilee; stepsons Willie and Thomas; brothers Steven (Joyce), Donald (Cristi), and David (Erica); seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 11 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle Ave., Minneapolis, KS 67467, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 12 at Bennington Cemetery. If you have a doo rag, the family encourages you to wear it. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s and may be left in care of the funeral home.

&nbsp;BARTON COUNTY —William Thomas Frederick Jr., 38, is wanted for attempted 2nd degree murder of a police officer, which occurred in Hoisington on April 1, 2023, according to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The Barton County District Court issued a warrant for Frederick on the charge. BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged aggravated assault on a police officer in Hoisington and asking the pubic for help finding&nbsp; 38-year-old William Thomas Frederick Jr.&nbsp;

Just before 2:30a.m. April 1, a Hoisington police officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle near a business in&nbsp; Hoisington, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, at which point it fled eastbound on Kansas 4 Highway at a high rate of speed. 

During the pursuit, the Hoisington officer reported on the radio he heard a backfire or gunshot. His vehicle then began to overheat and was disabled. It was later discovered a bullet had struck the radiator in the patrol car.

By this time, a Barton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. had caught up to the chase and continued pursuit. The suspect vehicle continued east on Kansas 4 Highway, entering the City of Claflin turning onto city streets when it crashed into a utility box and the vehicle was disabled. 

Review of the dash camera in the Sheriff’s Office vehicle indicates a suspect fired at least three shots while the Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit. Sheriff’s deputies captured two of the three occupants of the vehicle at the scene.

The driver was identified as Rylan J. Witmer, age 21 of Wilson and is being held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, felony attempt to flee and elude and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Witmer was booked in the Barton County Jail and released&nbsp; Monday on a $10,000 bond.

A passenger in the vehicle identified as Frederick Jr., fled from the scene and is believed to be the shooter. Frederick's last known address was in the Salina area. He may also be in Ellsworth or Rice counties.

Law Enforcement agencies including the United States Marshals Service are currently seeking the whereabouts of Frederick. He is wanted for questioning in reference to attempted murder on the Hoisington officer and aggravated assault of law enforcement officer regarding the deputies. 

Frederick was on Community Corrections and listed as an absconder at the time of the incident. Frederick is described as a white male, medium build, 5-foot -6, 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

After the chase, a vehicle was stolen in the Claflin area. It is believed Frederick may be driving a 2015 Toyota RAV4 bearing Kansas tag 602 CVU, bronze in color.

Warrant issued for Kan. man who fired at police during pursuit

William A. “Bill” Davidson, son of Paul Calvin Davidson and Mildred Irene (Hoffman) Davidson, was born on March 26, 1946 in Concordia, Ks. He passed away March 24, 2023 at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems in Beloit, KS at the age of 76 years.

On July 14, 1982, he was united in marriage to Rebecca S. Buethe at the Christian Church in Glasco, KS and Paul, Kristi, Chris and Melissa came to bless this home.

Bill was a decorated veteran of the United States Army.&nbsp; He was a lifelong rancher. He worked for Solomon Valley Feeders for most of his adult life, in different managerial positions.&nbsp; He retired from there in 2013.&nbsp; After several years taking care of his own cattle, Bill and Becky retired completely and moved to Scandia, Ks where they enjoyed the simple life and spending time with family. Their greatest adventures were many trips to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with their special companions, Bud and Abby.

Bill was preceded in death, by his parents Paul and Mildred Davidson; his wife Rebecca Davidson; son Paul Davidson.

He is survived by two daughters, Kristi (Errick) Clark of Beloit, KS; Melissa (Jeremy) Miller of Courtland, KS; son Chris (Angie) Stout of Bentonville, AR; special daughter Ashley Adolf, Topeka, KS; 13 grandchildren, Preston, Tanner, Laura, Brady, Zach, Colton, Sadie, Gage, Addyson, Hayden, Chase, Riley, Ryker, Haley; great-grandson Weston; brother Homer (Barbara) Davidson of Smithville, MO; many other family members and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Scandia, KS with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock, officiating. A graveside burial will follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Glasco Cemetery in Glasco, KS.

Friends may sign the register book prior to the services at the Church from 10 a.m. until service time.

He worked for Solomon Valley Feeders for most of his adult life, in different managerial positions.&nbsp; He retired from there in 2013.&nbsp; After several years taking care of his own cattle, Bill and Becky retired completely and moved to Scandia, Ks where they enjoyed the simple life and spending time with family. Their greatest adventures were many trips to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with their special companions, Bud and Abby.Bill was preceded in death, by his parents Paul and Mildred Davidson; his wife Rebecca Davidson; son Paul Davidson.He is survived by two daughters, Kristi (Errick) Clark of Beloit, KS; Melissa (Jeremy) Miller of Courtland, KS; son Chris (Angie) Stout of Bentonville, AR; special daughter Ashley Adolf, Topeka, KS; 13 grandchildren, Preston, Tanner, Laura, Brady, Zach, Colton, Sadie, Gage, Addyson, Hayden, Chase, Riley, Ryker, Haley; great-grandson Weston; brother Homer (Barbara) Davidson of Smithville, MO; many other family members and friends.Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Scandia, KS with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock, officiating. The 39th Salina Spring Poetry Series continues on Tuesday with a reading by Gary Jackson.

The reading will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 135 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Admission will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.

Huascar Medina, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus, curated this year’s series. Medina selected poets with a broad range of perspectives who will share their work in Salina this April.

“Gary Jackson's latest collection, Origin Story, is a must-read. I cannot sing its praises enough. His work is heartfelt and imaginative. Gary's capacity to make the intimate accessible is something to aspire to and admire. When I read Missing You, Metropolis, I realized poetry and pop culture could inhabit the same page without losing sincerity. It opened possibilities for me as a poet,” said Medina.

Born and raised in Topeka, Jackson is the author of the poetry collections Origin Story (University of New Mexico Press, 2021) and Missing You, Metropolis (Graywolf Press, 2010), which received the 2009 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. He’s also the co-editor of The Future of Black: Afrofuturism, Black Comics, and Superhero Poetry (Blair Publishing, 2021). His poems have appeared in numerous journals including Callaloo, The Sun, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Copper Nickel. He’s received fellowships and residencies from Cave Canem, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and Art Omi. He’s published work in Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology and was featured in the 2013 New American Poetry Series by the Poetry Society of America. He’s an associate professor in English and creative writing at the College of Charleston where he’s currently the director of undergraduate creative writing and teaches in the MFA program and serves as the Poetry editor of Swamp Pink.

DOUGLAS COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities, as part of a traffic stop&nbsp; in western Douglas County recovered more than 1,000 suspected fentanyl pills, 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine and a suspected stolen firearm, according to sheriff's department spokesperson George Diepenbrock.

The arrest and subsequent investigation led to a search warrant being served in Shawnee County where the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office recovered additional methamphetamine and suspected fentanyl pills.

“The arrest and recovery of about 1,000 pills headed for Lawrence and marked with an M match the description of pills that are dressed up to look like legitimate Oxycodone pills, though they are laced with fentanyl,” Sheriff Jay Armbrister said.

 “These pills are sold to kids and community members as something they are not, in order to get people addicted – deadly consequences aside. Cases like this show why it’s critical for law enforcement to disrupt the supply of these dangerous substances, while also educating our community and especially our youth about the dangers of taking what appears to be a legitimate prescription pill when something much more sinister and fatal lurks just beneath its surface.”

Armbrister added: “In addressing the opioid crisis, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is committed not only to education and enforcement but we will continue to advocate for policy-level changes like making and keeping Fentanyl testing supplies and Narcan legal and available to our community members.”

A DGSO deputy stopped an eastbound gray Chevrolet Tahoe for a traffic infraction just before 5 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 40 near the Shawnee County line. The DGSO K-9 unit was deployed and alerted to the presence of narcotics.

After searching the vehicle, deputies recovered 2.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and 1,002 suspected pressed fentanyl pills, the handgun and other property. 

Deputies have sent the suspected narcotics to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for formal identification and analysis.

The driver of the vehicle in Douglas County, a 32-year-old Topeka man, was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility on requested charges of two counts of felony drug distribution and one count of possession of stolen property related to the recovered handgun.&nbsp;

Dr. Ali Bülent Manguoglu, 69, of Salina, KS passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his daughters and wife on April 4th, 2023, with the support of Gentiva Hospice. Dr. Manguoglu was born in Izmir, Turkey on May 12th, 1953.

He graduated from Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey in 1976, and then attended Ankara University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey, Dept. of General Surgery as a 1st year resident. Ali’s journey in the United States started at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, Massachusetts, Dept. of General Surgery, then onto the University of Kansas School of Medicine, KC, KS, Dept. of Neurological Surgery (rock chalk!) for his Neurosurgery Residency. Ali then ventured to the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, Dept. of Neurosurgery, Registrar/Fellow, and finally the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland, SHOCK-TRAUMA Unit, Neurotrauma Fellowship. &nbsp;

Dr. Manguoglu’s board certifications include the American Board of Neurological Surgery and Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, UK in Surgical Neurology (SN.) Ali established “Salina Neurological Surgery” practice in 1985, and then established (with Salina Regional Health Center) “Salina Regional Neurosurgery.” He retired in 2019 due to health conditions. He proudly served Salina and surrounding communities for nearly 35 years. &nbsp;

Not only was Dr. Manguoglu a world-renowned neurosurgeon, but lived each day to the fullest, as if it were his last – travelling the world with his family and creating an endless book of stories. His favorite hobbies included listening and dancing to music, cooking, skiing, gardening, and rescuing animals.

Unfortunately, Dr. Ali B. Manguoglu lost his battle with terminal cancer and Parkinson’s disease after he fought hard to continue normalcy and create as many memories as he could in his final year, such as visiting his daughters and grandchildren, taking a final trip to Turkey and a memorable weekend in Kansas City at Tasso’s and Arthur Bryant’s.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Manguoglu, daughters Ayse Heisdorf and Safiye Williams, their husbands John Heisdorf and Mark Williams, and stepdaughter Heather Jones. Ali is also survived by his grandchildren Kai and Koa Williams and Ayla Heisdorf, as well as brothers Enis and Turgut Manguoglu. 

Ali was preceded in death by his stepson Steven Jones, and parents Fetih Manguoglu and Ahter Alkum.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 7th at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St., Salina, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8th at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s research, care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth Street, Salina Kansas.
