Heavy mixed precipitation is forecast. The greatest winter weather concern in these counties near the Nebraska/Kansas border will be freezing rain this morning into early this afternoon. Ice accumulations around to possibly over one-quarter inch will be possible. Freezing rain will change to snow Wednesday afternoon or evening before ending. Snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches are expected. Winds will average 15 to 25 mph with the highest gusts of 30 to 35 mph, initially out of the northeast but then turning northwesterly tonight.

Slight changes in the storm track could greatly impact snowfall and ice accumulations today across these areas, which are right along the southern edge of this storm system.

The freezing rain may result in downed trees and power lines along with the possibility of power outages. Travel could also be very difficult in the warned area due to the combination of freezing rain and snow. The hazardous conditions will worsen through the day on Wednesday with lingering impacts into at least Thursday morning.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 12 a.m. Wednesday to 12 a.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of up to three inches and ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch are forecast. Winds will average 15 to 20 mph with gusts to around 25 to 30 mph, initially out of the northeast but then turning northwesterly Wednesday night.

These areas are right on the southern edge of this winter storm system and there is still some uncertainty regarding the storm track. Amounts could increase if the track slips further south, or decrease if the track heads further north.

In 1886, the Great Kansas Blizzard struck with little warning. The blizzard actually raged from Iowa and Nebraska, then south across Kansas to Oklahoma and Texas. The astonishing event lasted NEARLY A WEEK. For much of this period, winds averaged around 40 mph and reduced visibilities to as low as 15 feet. In Kansas, an estimated 80 percent of the cattle perished with heavy losses in the other states. In Kansas, between 50 and 100 people froze to death, while 20 reportedly died in Iowa.

Talk about 'fowl' weather. In 1988, it was especially 'fowl' for North Texas and much of Arkansas as a winter storm invaded the region. Heavy snow buried much of Arkansas with 10 to 15-inch accumulations. In North Central Arkansas, 16 inches overwhelmed Heber Springs, where around 3.5 million chickens died. In North Central Texas, ice and snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches killed another 1.75 million chickens.

In 1880, Seattle was hit by what really was their "Snowstorm of the Century." Actually, it was their worst snowstorm of all time as the historic event overwhelmed the Emerald City with around 4 feet of snow. Hundreds of barns were destroyed and all transportation was halted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina was slightly warmer, drier in 2022, weather service reports

The average monthly temperature in December at Salina Municipal Airport was 30.8 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees cooler than average. It was the 33rd coolest December since records began in 1900, and the coolest since 2013. 

The warmest daily temperature was 69 degrees on Dec. 2, and the coldest was 7 below zero on Dec. 22. Two mornings dropped below zero during the month, which was the most December below zero readings since 2016. 

Precipitation-wise, 0.93 inches was measured at the airport, which was only 0.19 inches below the monthly average.

 </figure>National Weather ServiceThe average monthly temperature in December at Salina Municipal Airport was 30.8 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees cooler than average. It was the 33rd coolest December since records began in 1900, and the coolest since 2013. The warmest daily temperature was 69 degrees on Dec. 2, and the coldest was 7 below zero on Dec. 22. Two mornings dropped below zero during the month, which was the most December below zero readings since 2016. Precipitation-wise, 0.93 inches was measured at the airport, which was only 0.19 inches below the monthly average.<figure>

Salina slightly cooler, drier than average in December

Rain chances will increase on Monday, with areas over southeastern and eastern Kansas having best chance of seeing a quarter of an inch of rainfall. Some embedded thunderstorms may also occur with pea size hail and 50 mph winds possible.

The first couple of days of 2023 will be warm before we see the return of near-normal highs on Tuesday. 

There will be a chance for a rain/snow mix across central Kansas late Monday night thru Tuesday morning.

Patchy fog possible in our area Friday morning

Breezy conditions and temperatures in the 50s are expected over most of the area today. Portions of north central will be cooler, in the 40s, with a slight chance of showers through this afternoon. 

Overnight, lows will dip into the 20s for much of the area.

Then, quiet conditions and a slight warming trend are expected leading into the holiday weekend.
