Chiefs Training Camp Report: 8-15-25

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d3cddbda-2b46-4f90-a7fa-bfea196fa14f?elinkdata=27678">Joe Schwartz</a> believes his Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer team can be successful this fall. Highly successful.

"I'm very optimistic about this group," said Schwartz who enters his third season as the Coyotes' coach. "This may be the best team that I've ever coached, at least on paper. I've just been telling them we'll be a good team, but we have to reach that potential."

KWU was 11-7-1 overall and finished second in the Kansas Conference with an 11-2 record in 2024. The Coyotes gained traction after a slow start, winning 11 of their last 14 matches. The season ended with a 1-0 loss to York in the first round of the KCAC tournament.

"I think going from sixth place in the conference (in 2023) to finishing second was a great achievement but still a little bit disappointing just going out so early in the tournament," Schwartz said. "Last year was building up the players' confidence that we can do it and that they know we can do it. Now we just have to go and do it."

Buoyed by a large group of returning players and a strong recruiting class the Coyotes are ready for the challenges 2025 will present.

It will start on the defensive end of the pitch where KWU notched eight clean sheets in those final 14 matches.

"I saw a news article about a top soccer league how the team that actually won the division wasn't the one who scored the most goals," Schwartz said. "It was the one who conceded the fewest and so we really took that to heart.

"We went back and we looked at the KCAC the five years previous and they had the same statistical analysis. We obviously want to score goals, and we want to play in a very attractive style, but we have to make sure that we're defensively secure. I think that solid defense really helps us create more attacking opportunities."

Managing inevitable adversity will be imperative as well.

"At some point we are going to lose this season, it just happens," Schwartz said. "No team, unless you're LSU (Shreveport) in baseball (last spring), goes the whole season undefeated and wins the national tournament. That's very rare.

"So how are we going to overcome that adversity when maybe we don't have a good game or we have a ref that isn't maybe calling things how we think it should be, things like that? We're really just going to focus on our process and what we can control."

Senior goalkeeper <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/6640c274-e0ab-4b13-b1a7-7f52bdd0e972?elinkdata=27678">Isabella Galvan</a> leads a lengthy list of talented returners.

"Obviously, Bella is solid between the sticks after earning first team all-conference," Schwartz said. "I think she's a standout; she's a special player so we're really excited to see what she does in her senior season."

"That senior class seems like they're really ready to go and lead the team," Schwartz said. "I'm a big believer that the senior class determines the success of the team so I'm excited for that group to come in and help us achieve something really special."

Schwartz signed 13 freshmen and seven transfers which includes forward <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ecf7bea8-126f-4a6c-b5e5-50ccb9e3853f?elinkdata=27678">America Lopez</a> (College of the Sequoias), goalkeeper <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/4c8570c4-16af-4627-8ce0-ee0c48700adf?elinkdata=27678">Noemi Reyes</a> (Santa Ana), midfielders <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/9825cb82-a3ef-459b-b44f-f94bc48500d2?elinkdata=27678">Grace Arteaga</a> (Houston-Victoria) and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/a561b2c9-c372-4fae-953e-a2601d5053c8?elinkdata=27678">Victoria Poon</a> (Brescia) and defender <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/60e8ab7d-9f4d-4547-9f4a-5376c4f7b1a6?elinkdata=27678">Lexi Jack</a> (Hutchinson).

"We think that (Lopez) will be a special player," Schwartz said. "She had a really good juco career, I think she was just overlooked a little bit because she wasn't the best on her team. Honestly, all of our transfers coming in are going to be impactful. We've added a lot of depth in some positions."

He expects the KCAC to be better than ever.

"I think it's going to be the most competitive it's ever been," he said. "I think Oklahoma Wesleyan will take it personally that they didn't win the tournament and the conference and I think they'll reload. Friends is going to take that conference tournament championship and they're going to want to build off of that. York finished very strong in the tournament and they're going to want to continue that."

The Coyotes open the season against Hastings on August 23 in Hastings, Nebraska. The home opener is a week later (August 30) against Central Methodist at 1 p.m. at JRI Hospitality Stadium and Graves Family Sports Complex.

KANSAS - The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) is proud to announce the 2025 KCAC Football Preseason Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches.

Kansas Wesleyan had five named to the team in <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/8a6ba3ee-552e-4f36-8ec7-acf94e12df49?elinkdata=27585">Luke Armstrong</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/1f097080-a2cd-4f36-89fe-db8daa353522?elinkdata=27585">Antonio Caballero</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/251a8280-3248-4552-971f-75cd1dd58458?elinkdata=27585">Josh King-Bradley</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/1a489612-dbab-49aa-ae05-a9750a459dfe?elinkdata=27585">Myles Elam</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/996ba495-9fbf-4328-a9dd-84fa1e0576ba?elinkdata=27585">Cole Segraves</a>.

Armstrong led the Bissell Division and all of the KCAC in rushing yards (1,297) through the end of the regular season, and ranked second in the NAIA. He tied for the lead in rushing touchdowns in all of the KCAC with 14 through the end of the regular season. He also had 91 receiving yards, 156 punt return yards, and 447 kick return yards, giving him 1,991 all-purpose yards through the end of the regular season. His total all-purpose yardage ranked first in all of the KCAC, and second in the NAIA.

Serving as both kicker and punter for the Coyotes, Segraves ranked third in the division in punting yards (632), with a long of 50 yards. His kickoffs averaged 59.3 yards on the season, with a total kickoff yardage of 3,378. He was 3 of 4 on the season on field goals, serving as the "long-distance kicker" for KWU, going 2 of 3 on field goals over 50 yards, with a long of 54 on the year.

Caballero and Lewis anchored a strong offensive line for the Coyotes that blocked for the division's leading rusher as the Coyotes rushed for over 1300 yards in divisional play and over 2300 yards in the regular season.

King-Bradley led the Bissell Division in sacks with seven during divisional play and had 10.5 through the end of the regular season, which was tops in the entire KCAC, and was third best in the NAIA through the end of the regular season.

Elam led the Coyotes with 45 tackles in divisional play which ranked fourth best in the division. He ranked second in the division in overall games with 102 through the end of the regular season, and was third in the entire KCAC with that total.

The group consists of four sophomores, one redshirt sophomore, ten juniors, three redshirt juniors, sixteen seniors, one redshirt senior, and two graduate students.

Friends University leads the conference with eight honorees on the preseason team. Southwestern College and Evangel University rank second in the conference, with six honorees each. McPherson College and Kansas Wesleyan University follow that with five honorees from each institutions. Rounding out the list are three honorees from Tabor College, two from Ottawa University, and one each from the University of Saint Mary and Bethel College.

Some of the standouts from the Preseason Team include K'Vonte Baker of Friends University, Jalil Brown of McPherson College, and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/a0844b7e-4bb6-45de-9141-69d2b8a5a0dc?elinkdata=27585">Luke Armstrong</a> of Kansas Wesleyan University.

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Alright, it is great to have the military out here today, military appreciation day. (We’re thankful) for all they do for us so we can do – including you guys, so you can do what you do, along with us. So anyways the guys who didn’t practice today, (were) (Jake) Briningstool, he will be out, Marquise (Brown) will be out, (Ethan) Driskell will be out. Kareem Hunt got a quad contusion; I’m just going to see about him. I’m still kind of figuring out who’s going to play, not play, that whole deal. There’s a chance I sit a couple of the starters or at least be short with them. We want to make sure we get a good look at these guys, these young guys. So, we will just see how it all rolls going forward. Other than that, everybody practiced and did a nice job.”

Q: With playing time calls, could the third game come into play with that?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, there’s a chance they play (starters) a little bit more in the third game.”

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, first of all, the people up here have been phenomenal. They feed us, they house us, they baby us, they keep this field looking groomed like they do, and the facility cleaned up, so we appreciate that. Then the guys came up in a good frame of mind, they worked hard (and) I mentioned it to them last night that there wasn’t one of those days where we had a hiccup day where everything was just not right, the rhythms were down all of that, we didn’t have one of those. I mean the guys came out with a purpose and I thought they handled it the right way and worked their tail(s) off. We got some good weather, a mixture of the heat and normal days, it was good all the way around that way. Again, we look forward to going back (to Kansas City) and getting that part started, too. I thought this was very productive, I want to see this game; I want to get the young guys some good reps in this game. You want to make sure you give (General Manager) Brett (Veach) enough to evaluate and the coaches to evaluate. So, we’ll try to get that done.”

Q: How impressed have you been with Chris Oladokun?

REID:&nbsp;“Look I thought he had a good game last week. So, he’ll play, he’ll get some playing time this week. All of them will (quarterbacks), Pat (Mahomes) would be the one that would get slighted – but those other three will get plenty of time.”

Q: Is Patrick Mahomes not going to play on Friday?

REID:&nbsp;“Well, we’ll see. Theres a good chance he doesn’t, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Q:&nbsp;How important are Kingsley Suamataia’s and Josh Simmon’s reps in the preseason?

REID:&nbsp;“I think it’s important. I think every snap they get, practice included, is important. There has got to be a chemistry that they develop there and that takes a little bit of time. So, it’s not just being able to block your guy. All the games involved, and blitzes involved and communication you (have) got to play with each other to know that.”

Q<a>:</a>&nbsp;During this first preseason game Josh Simmons might have given up some passes or runs. Is that something you talked about after the game?

REID:&nbsp;“You always look at that. I mean you look at that at every position, quarterback included. You want to make sure that you’re not giving anything away and that’s a battle and these guys, we train them that way so they can evaluate themselves too. And maybe one thing sets up another thing.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there any excitement about Taylor Swift appearing on Travis Kelce’s podcast?

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, I’m like really old Nate (Taylor) (laughter). My grandkids will be all over it. But I’m happy for them (Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce). Both of them like each other, and what a plus that is. They care about each other, and I think that’s the most important thing. The older you get; you want these guys to have somebody they can settle down with and that whole deal. And so, I think it’s a neat deal for them – both of them.”

Q: On Travis Kelce’s recent GQ photoshoot with an alligator.

REID: “It’s great to be young, man (laughter). That alligator is 175 pounds or something, (and) they made him hold it for quite a while it looked like. I’m not sure who was madder, the alligator or Travis (Kelce).”

Q: Who do you attribute the discipline of this camp to?

REID: “I would tell you the senior leadership on this team. You (have) got guys that don’t miss practice, (and) that have been around. Take Travis (Kelce), we’re talking about Travis, take Travis – he didn’t want to miss a rep, let alone a practice. So, that goes a long way. You don’t have to say much as a coach when the Pat Mahomes, Chris Jones, (Nick) Bolton, I mean these guys - JuJu (Smith-Schuster) – these guys don’t want to miss, they don’t want to miss a day. I mean, I can keep going. (Trent) McDuffie, he’s a young guy, but he’s a leader in the group too. So, those guys when they do that, you miss (practice) you better be really hurt, that’s how it goes.”

Q: How cool is it to have the military in attendance every year at camp?

REID: “I think it’s a neat thing. I had a chance to go to Afghanistan a few years back, quite a few years now, just to see the camaraderie there. And I wish every sixteen-year-old had a chance to go over there and see that, how everybody works together. I mean, the flag means a lot. It’s just about America and keeping America right for all of us to do what we do here. It’s great to have a minute to appreciate it, Herbie (Teope) included. Herbie was a big part of that.”

Q: How did the idea of everyone going out to get pizza during training camp occur? How do you think training camp went overall?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I thought it was awesome, you know? Just getting to spend some time with the guys and I thought we had a great training camp. There were none of those, like, bad days where it’s just like, no energy. Everybody kind of brought their own motivation and motivated each other. And so I thought it was a really good training camp, and it was good to kind of be here with the guys and kind of built that team chemistry that you’re going to throughout a season.”

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I think it kind of just goes here and there, so, we’ll keep that secret.”

Q: On having limited playing time in the preseason.

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I mean, I’ll be prepared to play. I mean, I think I go into every single game with the mentality of ‘you don’t know how much you’re going to get in there’. So, whenever you do get reps, you just try to maximize those. And so, I’ll go through my normal routine and be ready to go, and we’ll see how it goes as we get there. But I’ll be prepared to play for however many snaps that is.”

Q: You played on scout team today at practice. How fun is that for you?&nbsp;

MAHOMES: “Yeah, it’s fun. You get to push the envelope a little bit. You get to try stuff a little more than you would try in a regular training camp practice. And so, (I) worked on kind of like my fakes and stuff like that, trying to get the defense to bite on fakes and stuff. And then trying to throw it into tighter windows, you know, sometimes those things are circled but you still try to fit it in there and get the completions. And so, there’s a different type of competitive thing that you go through and you’re trying to beat the defense whenever they are kind of set up to succeed.”

Q: What did you learn about the team in camp this year?

MAHOMES: “I think you learned – I mean, I didn’t learn this, but you know how hungry these guys are. It started in OTAs, and guys are ready to compete, they’re ready to get there and prove who we are. And we have a lot of young guys, and I think it’s bringing a lot of energy to the team to add with the veteran leadership that we have. And so, I’m excited for the team and excited to get out there. And we (have) got a good last few preseason games and then we have a great early schedule, so I think guys are really ready to get out there and showcase who we are.”

Q: On the young left side of the offensive line.

MAHOMES: “I thought they (Kingsley Suamataia and Josh Simmons) learned a ton. I mean, obviously they’re talented and they have the physical abilities. But being tested by Spags (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) every single day, you have to learn how to not make the same mistakes twice, and they did a good job of that. And so, we’ll continue to get better and better as they continue to get more and more reps. I thought they did a great job of just getting better and better each and every day at training camp, and we can continue to build that throughout the season.”

Q: On the difference between regular season practice and training camp practice.

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think it’s you don’t have the reps, I guess you would say. I mean, obviously, you get so many reps at training camp that when you make a mistake, you kind of get another chance at it, versus in the regular season. (If) you make that mistake, (it could) be the difference of a game. And so, for them, it’s just, they’re making mistakes, now they’re learning from their mistakes; so that when we get to the regular season, they can execute and not make those mistakes in the game. And so, this is what it’s all about. That’s when we have so many reps in at camp, that’s why we practice at the pace that we practice at. Because you want to be able to get those mistakes out of the way now so that when you’re in the season, you’re not making those mistakes in kind of a do or die type (of) situations in the game.”

Q:&nbsp;&nbsp;Is there a sense of accomplishment or verification that you survived the month at all?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“No yeah, I mean, it’s, I mean I like it out here. I’m going to be honest with you. It’s like the best practice field that you could possibly have. And the weather kind of held off pretty, I mean except for like one day, it was pretty good weather all year long. And even though the dorms are, I could do without the dorms (laughter). But everything else, like I have fun out here and I’m excited to get home now and see my kids; but at the same time, you kind of get away and you just focus on football and (it) kind of locks you in for whenever you go back. You’re in football season, and you’re not in that offseason, kind of mode. And so, it’s good to get away from it, get away from home for a little bit and just focus on football, but I’m definitely excited to see the kids when I get back.”

Q:&nbsp;What is the purpose of the crossbar competition and other games like that during camp?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Yeah it keeps the competition going. You know, we have competition in that quarterback room, and we want to have healthy competition and fun and keep stuff motivated. And so, I think the coaches do a great job; if you see it sometimes when we’re in individual, we’re doing drills and we’re working on footwork and stuff like that. They keep it fun too, where we’re doing drills, where you’re working on accuracy like crossbar and stuff like that in pressure type (of) situations with everybody watching. We like to do it with the fans who are out there so there’s no hiding. You got to do it where everybody sees it. And so, it puts you in, I’m not going to say game like situations, but it puts you in a place where there’s pressure on you, you’ve got to be accurate and make throws and so it’s definitely a lot of fun. We came up short yesterday, I didn’t get to throw in that last one. I blame (Offensive Coordinator Matt) Nags (Nagy) (laughter). So, it’s, if I only got one throw, I thought we were going to win.”

Q:&nbsp;On his reaction to Taylor Swift going on Travis Kelce’s podcast and if he knew about it.

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“Nah, it surprised me too. I knew before y’all did because they called me after the podcast was done. They didn’t call me, they called Brittany (Mahomes) (laughter). I was in the back of the facetime. I’m obviously super excited. Just knowing Taylor (Swift) and seeing the process from just a little bit closer of how she makes the albums. It’s gonna be amazing, (just) because of how much work she (Taylor Swift) puts into it. MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I always want to play. So, it’s kinda like – I always want to be out there and playing. You can say you don’t want to play and then you get to the game and it’s like ‘man, I wanna be in the game and playing a game with my teammates’, and so, at the end of the day I trust in (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid and his process. And he has a reason for everything that he does and so, I guess that I’ll be ready to play this week and if I get to play I’ll be ready to go and if I don’t, I’ll be ready to go the next week and if I’m not I’ll be just as energized on the sideline as I would be if I was playing in the game. I trust in Coach Reid fully, so whatever his decision is, I’ll be ready to go out there and get the most I can out of it.”

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“He (Chris Jones) says that, but I think I’m faster than him (laughter). When Chris wants to disrupt a play in a game, he can disrupt it. You saw at some points of practice yesterday Chris was just pissed off and he just ruined an entire period for the offense (laughter), and that’s the type of player he is, he can do that and that is why he is going to have a gold jacket one day and it’s cause at any moment he can disrupt an entire game. The chasing, thing is I’m quick. I think I just make him miss too much, but he can say it’s the ‘Chris Rule’ if he wants to (laughter).”

Q:&nbsp;On how much it hurts not being able to practice with Hollywood Brown.

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I mean I always want more and more reps, so I think that’s everything. I think he (Hollywood Brown) has done a great job progressing in the rehab process so hopefully really soon we can get back on the field again. I know it won’t be in front of the fans and stuff like that, but he’ll get enough work in. We have enough weeks (of practice) left that he’ll get the work. He has gotten the mental work and the mental walkthrough work inside the building. We talk all the time on the sideline and throughout games, but hopefully we get him out there soon and we can get a few weeks of work as we go into the season.”

Q:&nbsp;Did you get done what you wanted in the first preseason game?

MAHOMES:&nbsp;“I always like to get hit, not hit hard, but I like to get touched and I didn’t get touched which is a good thing for our offensive line obviously, but I want to get pushed, like softly pushed one time to let you know that I can get hit. The extraordinary gift, amounting to approximately $300 million, is the largest in Kansas Athletics and University of Kansas history, and is among the largest single gifts in the history of college athletics.&nbsp;

Booth, a graduate of both Lawrence High School and KU, is an investing legend and founder of Dimensional Fund Advisors — a global investment firm that manages $853 billion in assets as of June 30, 2025. Booth’s visionary gift includes a $75 million challenge to other donors that launches the next phase of progress on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The remainder of his commitment will generate a stream of income that will strengthen Kansas Athletics across generations. 

“David’s unprecedented generosity is transformative now and for our future,” said KU Athletics Director and Vice Chancellor Travis Goff. “It accelerates phase II of the Gateway District and the new ‘Booth’ and inspires others to step up and join in completing this vision. It’s not just the scale of the gift that is remarkable, but what it will accomplish. Booth’s commitment will propel the Gateway District’s next phase, which adds to private and civic investment for a new hotel, additional retail and restaurant spaces, student housing, improved parking and an outdoor event plaza.

The remainder of Booth’s gift will allow Kansas Athletics to be strategic, innovative and maintain a leadership position in college athletics. With the advent of revenue sharing and the continued changes in NCAA and conference dynamics, his generosity will help enable KU to take the next step in cementing itself as a national leader in college athletics.&nbsp;

When he was a child, Booth’s parents, Gilbert and Betty Booth, moved the family from their home in Garnett, Kansas, to Lawrence at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/1931+Naismith+Drive?entry=gmail&amp;source=g" target="_blank">1931 Naismith Drive</a>, near Allen Fieldhouse. The family gathered regularly to listen to KU games on the radio, glued to Max Falkenstien’s iconic voice. At the age of 13, Booth attended his first game through the Boy Scouts, working as an usher in the football stadium. He later worked basketball games at Allen Fieldhouse by selling popcorn in the stands.

The Lawrence High graduate attended KU, earning both a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1968 and a Master of Science in Business in 1969 before earning his Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1971.   

Booth founded Dimensional Fund Advisors in 1981 to apply the principles of financial science to practical investment solutions. Booth started Dimensional in collaboration with several others from the University of Chicago, including Booth’s mentor, former professor and Nobel Laureate Eugene Fama, and classmate Rex Sinquefield, who co-founded the firm. Booth and Dimensional have been recognized for helping transform the industry toward more transparent, low-cost and data-driven solutions for investors. That story was recently profiled by Academy Award winning director Errol Morris in the film “Tune Out the Noise.”

KU Athletics Receives Historic $300 Million Gift from Longtime Donor and Alumnus David Booth 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino doubled, homered and drove in five runs as the Kansas City Royals topped the Washington Nationals 8-5 to reach the .500 mark for the second time since mid-June.

After a two-out, third-inning walk by Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr.’s infield hit, Pasquantino hit Mitchell Parker’s first-pitch fastball into the second row of the right field stands, a few feet inside the foul pole, expanding Kansas City’s lead to 4-0.

Pasquantino opened the scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly and capped the Royals scoring with an RBI double in the seventh.

Jonathan India’s two-run homer extended Kansas City’s lead to 7-2 in the sixth.

Michael Wacha (7-9) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, his sixth consecutive start permitting fewer than three runs.

Lucas Erceg earned his second save with a hitless ninth.

In 5 1/3 innings, Parker (7-13) allowed five runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Over his last three starts — all losses — Parker has allowed 17 runs in 14 1/3 innings.

Chiefs Training Camp Report: 8-12-25

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State offensive coordinator&nbsp;Matt Wells&nbsp;and defensive coordinator&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;met with members of the media on Tuesday at the Vanier Family Football Complex to discuss the team’s progress during preseason camp and preview the season opener next Saturday against Iowa State. On the biggest challenge getting players ready for Ireland…

“I don't know about that. We’re just trying to get them ready for the season. It's more than just one game. It's trying to prepare these guys for the long haul. You're installing schemes. You're getting in shape. You're learning how to work through tough times. Lots of install, and then a game plan certainly is that. But, we'll get over there and we'll get acclimated and play the game. It won't matter where this game is going to be played – our guys will be ready to play.”

On how he feels about the offense after 16 practices…

“I think we all probably look at it with a real critical eye at times. But, when you look back, I see some areas I think we’re probably better than last year. Then, I think there's some areas that we all need game day to tell us some answers. These guys are really, really working hard. They're grinding. They're staying together. I hope it is a tough-minded group. We will go through some adversity. We know that. Whether it's an injury or it's something that didn't go right, or somebody comes out in a front that we didn't prepare for. How do you handle that? We've tried to put them through some of those situations. We do have some guys that have played ball. I rest easier in knowing that you've got a quarterback that's played, whatever, 14 games and started. There's some starts on that o-line. There's a few of them that have played in other places that are here. The tight end room is really experienced. Jayce (Brown) has played in a lot of games. (Jaron Tibbs) and JB (Jerand Bradley) have played in a lot of games – not in a Wildcat uniform, but in a lot of games. Dylan (Edwards) has played in games, and Joe (Jackson). So, I think I take that as a positive because I know how I think they're going to be. But also, we've got some of those guys I just mentioned that's a little bit new and improved. It’s a newer version of them, and I'm excited to go out and watch them all together.”

On how Avery Johnson is different from last season…

“I think he's probably more comfortable in his own skin, in his own ability. ‘I don't have to be this certain type of player. I don't need to listen to the media or somebody ask me about being a certain prototypical ‘blank’ kind of quarterback. I'm good when I run. I'm good when I throw it.’ I think he is further along in coverage recognition. I think he is further along in his ability to dissect what a defense is doing to him a little quicker. That takes time. It takes live reps, and that takes a lot of looks. Certainly with all the safeties that Joe (Klanderman) plays in the back end, that can be a challenge for us and in training camp. But, it's a good look knowing who our first opponent is.”

On the depth behind Avery Johnson at quarterback…

“You’ve got a battle for whoever that second quarterback is. That's something I see as ongoing. I’m not close to naming a guy. I don't know if Coach (Klieman) will. I don't know where that is. That’s not an alarm, that's guys at different stages of their careers in that room right now. They're all working hard. There are abilities there. I'm straining them as best I can in a practice setting. It's not easy, but being a backup quarterback is not easy. We may not play a backup quarterback here for two years, and it may be, I tell them, it may be two days. Who knows? Avery may get a hangnail. I don't know. So, there's uncertainty, and I try to create some of those situations in practice to make them react to that uncertainty because that's what it will be like if and when a guy has to go in there and do that. So, you want me to say something about who the guy is, but we don't know yet. They don't know, and that may be something that's ongoing for quite a while. In fact, last year, it was through the season. But, those guys are battling.”

On the growth of Dylan Edwards from last season…

“He's – like all our young men – going into his third year in college, a little bit more mature, a little bit more seasoned, a little bit more aware of the grind of practice schedule in training camp with the season coming up. I see a guy that's really dynamic, runs the ball better than you think in between the tackles. He has proven to be durable so far, and I hope that continues, but he's dynamic with the ball in his hands.”

JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

On how he feels at this point in preseason camp…

“I feel like time is flying by. You look at this Ireland trip, and you knew the schedule was going to be a little bit different. Spring went by in a blur. Summer went by in a blur. As a football coach, June doesn’t even exist to you anymore. I think I was on vacation for about four days and was in the office the rest of the time. Now the game is afoot. So, it's flown by really quick, but I feel good about where our guys are at.”

On if there is a defensive position group that has taken a step forward during camp…

“Great question. I'll just say it to you this way – I feel pretty good about our starters. The thing was who are those next guys that are going to play significant snaps? We did a little situational walk throughout there today. Coach (Klieman) called out the second defense, and they got together in a little group. I looked at that group of guys and I'm like, ‘There's some pretty dang good football players here.’ They're good looking kids. They're kids that know what they're doing. They're kids that I would trust to be out there. So, I don't know. I think a lot of groups have made a great leap. Probably the group that has impressed me the most with the progress they've made since the spring is the corners. Just watching Zashon Rich and Donovan McIntosh, Justice Clemens, Jayden Rowe, playing with confidence, it's fun to watch those guys right now. That was probably the biggest question mark (after) losing the two seniors from a year ago. Obviously, both of them were very good players, and I don't think we're going to drop off there at all.”

On playing a big, physical cornerback in Jayden Rowe…

“Jayden’s a different animal now. He's about 227 pounds. He ran a 10.3 in high school. He's physical, and he uses it. You’d think change of direction or something like that would be an issue for him, but it’s not. So, he's a different animal. He came from a system at Oklahoma where they did so much. I don't know if he did any technique really well. We do less with our guys, but we try to do it with great technique. So, we're trying to get him dialed in on just that. I don't think it's a stress for him mentally, but just, ‘Hey, I'm a divider, I'm a man player. This is how we do it.’ That's what we're trying to work on with him.”

On this defense compared to last in terms of running to the football…

“These guys care. They're about it, and they hold each other accountable to that, which is the coolest thing. It's not me pushing the buttons. There are some guys that we have that are going to be big parts of this that are transfers. Qua Moss is going to be a big part of this. Gunner Maldonado is going to be a big part of this. Gabe Powers is going to be a big part of this – guys that were in different programs a year ago. They're taking pride in it. I hear them using our language. There's football terminology, sure, but there's also the language of how we run to the football, how we play, how we execute, how we do those things. To see it permeating through those guys is fun.”

But, those guys are battling.”On the growth of Dylan Edwards from last season…“He's – like all our young men – going into his third year in college, a little bit more mature, a little bit more seasoned, a little bit more aware of the grind of practice schedule in training camp with the season coming up. I see a guy that's really dynamic, runs the ball better than you think in between the tackles. He has proven to be durable so far, and I hope that continues, but he's dynamic with the ball in his hands.”JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOROn how he feels at this point in preseason camp…“I feel like time is flying by. You look at this Ireland trip, and you knew the schedule was going to be a little bit different. Spring went by in a blur. Summer went by in a blur. As a football coach, June doesn’t even exist to you anymore. I think I was on vacation for about four days and was in the office the rest of the time. Now the game is afoot. So, it's flown by really quick, but I feel good about where our guys are at.”On if there is a defensive position group that has taken a step forward during camp…“Great question. I'll just say it to you this way – I feel pretty good about our starters. The thing was who are those next guys that are going to play significant snaps? We did a little situational walk throughout there today. Coach (Klieman) called out the second defense, and they got together in a little group. I looked at that group of guys and I'm like, ‘There's some pretty dang good football players here.’ They're good looking kids. They're kids that know what they're doing. They're kids that I would trust to be out there. So, I don't know. I think a lot of groups have made a great leap. Probably the group that has impressed me the most with the progress they've made since the spring is the corners. Just watching Zashon Rich and Donovan McIntosh, Justice Clemens, Jayden Rowe, playing with confidence, it's fun to watch those guys right now. That was probably the biggest question mark (after) losing the two seniors from a year ago. Obviously, both of them were very good players, and I don't think we're going to drop off there at all.”On playing a big, physical cornerback in Jayden Rowe…“Jayden’s a different animal now. He's about 227 pounds. He ran a 10.3 in high school. He's physical, and he uses it. You’d think change of direction or something like that would be an issue for him, but it’s not. So, he's a different animal. He came from a system at Oklahoma where they did so much. I don't know if he did any technique really well. We do less with our guys, but we try to do it with great technique. So, we're trying to get him dialed in on just that. I don't think it's a stress for him mentally, but just, ‘Hey, I'm a divider, I'm a man player. This is how we do it.’ That's what we're trying to work on with him.”On this defense compared to last in terms of running to the football…“These guys care. They're about it, and they hold each other accountable to that, which is the coolest thing. It's not me pushing the buttons. There are some guys that we have that are going to be big parts of this that are transfers. Qua Moss is going to be a big part of this. Gunner Maldonado is going to be a big part of this. Gabe Powers is going to be a big part of this – guys that were in different programs a year ago. They're taking pride in it. I hear them using our language. There's football terminology, sure, but there's also the language of how we run to the football, how we play, how we execute, how we do those things. Q: What did you see the other night as far as special teams?

TOUB:&nbsp;“I thought we played – had a good game. It was solid, (we) secured the football, that’s always hard to do. So, it hurt them a little bit. But also, on the other hand, I liked the fact that we did knock the ball out. So, you look at it that way, too. The guys flew around pretty good. Kicking was exceptional, (Harrison) Butker was really trying to work the edges with the kickoffs – a little too close really, that thing could have easily bounced out. You want to try to push the limits right now during the preseason. You want to see how far you can go with it. He’s worked so hard at it, and it’s good to see him have some success there. Then Matt (Araiza) punted well, he had some really good punts. He had the one touchback where I thought we could’ve done a better job with the hang time on that instead of the distance, but he’s moving the ball well (and) he’s gotten better from last year. I’m excited about where we are right now.”

Q: With the new kickoff rule, is there something you can learn from in-game experience that you can’t learn in practice?

TOUB:&nbsp;“Not really. Our guys are doing different stuff now because you’re allowed to take the middle guy and have him off the line. You can have three guys off the line now, which is, I think it’s an advantage for the kickoff return team. It helped us a little bit, I thought in the game, I think teams are going to use it to their advantage like we did. Other than that, obviously, teams are going to be kicking it into the target zone, that’s going to happen. There’s going to be a lot more returns, a lot more coverages and it’s all good for special teams.”

Q: On Josh Simmons progression through the first preseason game, practices, meeting rooms and OTAs?

HECK:&nbsp;“It’s a big job for anybody coming in to learn the details of the offense, assignments (and) techniques. Every play has a thousand little details and so picking those things up, that was job one in the spring where he (Josh Simmons) was doing less physical work with us. Since he has gotten to training camp, he’s been able to every day add one or two of these details that are important to each play. So, I’ve seen him steadily improve, and his understanding - and we’re able to have better conversations about what’s going on and I think that’s what we’ll see his trajectory do is just go like this (points up).”

Q: How strong is the competition for the eighth, ninth and tenth spot on the roster?

HECK:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think this is one of the best years we’ve had in terms of bringing in talent and creating competition across the board. That’s just going to make the group better so, when you talk about the eighth, ninth, and tenth spot, there’s a lot of competition going on and there’s still a lot more to be done there in terms of evaluation. Those preseason games are going to be huge. So, who is operating and grading up, basically getting their guy blocked the most consistently? Who do we trust to put in there on a Sunday or Monday night?

Q: Where does Josh Simmons fit among the players you’ve coached based on your experience?

HECK:&nbsp;“I’d hesitate to compare guys; every guy is different. I’m still in a learning process myself, of what makes him (Josh Simmons) tick, how does he learn best (and) how can I help him get better? There’s constant communication there. But I would say he’s certainly as talented a player as I’ve ever been around. He loves the game. So, those are two good things, when you’re talented and you love the game, and you want to be the best, you got a great chance to be a good one.”

Q: On the similarities between Ashton Gillotte and George Karlaftis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CULLEN:&nbsp;“(They are) very similar. They were coached by the same coach. (Louisville Defensive Line) Coach (Mark) Hagen did a great job with George (Karlaftis) at Purdue, and now he’s at Louisville. But very similar. Both (Ashton Gillotte and George Karlaftis) have great motors, both love football, so (they are) really, really similar.”

Q: On getting more sacks this season.

CULLEN:&nbsp;“Absolutely. When you look at the two years we won the Super Bowl – and Spags (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) is as creative as it comes, in terms of getting to the quarterback. We have guys that can get to the quarterback, and we had like 57 or 60 (sacks), two years in a row. And then we dipped a little bit last year, but we picked it up at the end of the year and into the playoffs. So, the thing we (have) got to do a better job of is making sure in certain situations he (the quarterback) doesn’t get out of the pocket. We had opportunities to get him&nbsp;<a>(</a>the quarterback) down and didn’t finish, and that’s been our emphasis this year.”

Q: How have you seen Chris Jones embrace his leadership role on the defensive line?

CULLEN:&nbsp;“Chris (Jones) is having a phenomenal camp. He hasn’t missed a rep, and this is our fourth year together. He had a similar camp in ‘22. Obviously, he wasn’t here in ’23, (and) he was injured a little bit last year. He hasn’t missed a rep. Long-drive drill, nine-on-seven, one-on-one pass rush, (he’s been) phenomenal. He’s in great physical shape, and he’s on a mission.”

DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH DAVE MERRITT

Q: What do you like about Nohl Williams?

MERRITT:&nbsp;“He (Nohl Williams) competes. He showed some physicality in the game in Arizona. So, those are things that we were looking for, and I just love the fact that the kid, he takes coaching. A lot of guys, sometimes they come in and you don’t know what you’re getting. It’s like a box of chocolates, you have no clue on what you’re going to get. But he takes coaching, so we love that about him.”

MERRITT&nbsp;“Chris (Roland-Wallace) has done a wonderful job for us. I mean, we have him at multiple positions. He did that his rookie year where we played him at safety, (we) played him at nickel, (we) moved him from outside and just really played him closer towards the box. And so (the) young man is very cerebral, and so he’s able to pick up the defenses and then he can do a lot of things for us. Whether it’s strong, free safety, as well as play a little dime or nickel. So having that, kind of, Swiss Army Knife is going to help us out.”

Q: What are the challenges of bringing in Kristian Fulton at this time?

MERRITT:&nbsp;“I think the challenge for Kristian (Fulton) is just to get his cardio. Because you can go and you can work with your offseason coach, you can go and work with your trainers, but when you come out here and you’re working with a professional coach, as well as going against a professional offense – your cardio is the first thing that you’re going to see. And so I think the good thing about him (Kristian Fulton) is today, I think he wanted to tap out, and then all of a sudden (I) just told him, ‘just keep going.’ Because he needs that, just play after play after play. So, if he can continue to expand and open his lungs, that’s going to help us all out.”

WIDE RECEIVERS COACH CONNOR EMBREE

Q: On Xavier Worthy’s improvement in route running.

EMBREE:&nbsp;“After this season, me and him had a good talk (on) what he needs to get better at and I think he did a good job in the offseason, especially the summer of working on the stuff we were talking about. I think it shows on the field. He’s not just a straight-line go route guy. He can run multiple routes, so I really like what he did. (He) came back in great shape and then like you said he’s gotten better at route running.”

Q: On dealing with so many injuries in the wide receiver room last season.

EMBREE:&nbsp;“It was difficult, but I think that’s what makes us such a great team. It’s that next man up. All the second, third string guys, they know they’re one play away from being a starter. So that’s credit to them too, being in their book, knowing what to do, and when they got their opportunity, they made the most of it.”

Q: On the speed of the wide receivers.

EMBREE:&nbsp;“Yeah, it’s fast. It’s like a track team out there. 4x1 team. It’s next man up. They all can run. That’s kind of what our offense is based off of is just speed, speed, speed, speed. And then just like you said, we got a lot of guys that can run. So, I like the depth of our room and the speed of it.”

PASS GAME COORDINATOR JOE BLEYMAIER

Q: How are you able to use Xavier Worthy now that he’s in year two, in ways you couldn’t in year one?

BLEYMAIER:&nbsp;“Yeah, he (Xavier Worthy) has a familiarity with the offense and scheme to where he can do more things. He can put more, in terms of where he aligns, and the routes and the concepts on his plate. He too, utilizing him more, he too, is in that identity phase in that formation of himself as a player. And so, one of the things that he does, I think, that’s a credit to him, is that he’s really emphasizing and focusing on the things that he does well. Continuing to do those (things) well, rather than just take it for granted (and) focus on the next thing he would like to build-on. He singles out Trent (McDuffie) in one-on-ones, and often times he’s going to run the same routes over and over against Trent. So really sharpening his fast ball, his main pitch, and then from there, being able to say all right, here’s how I can complement that. And here’s the other moves and the routes that can work off that. So, he’s like a microcosm of the offense, in general. In year two, he’s trying to establish that identity of here’s what I can do against anybody in the league. And then if they start taking it away, here’s how I can complement that.”

Q: What have you seen from Travis Kelce this year? How has he evolved over the years?

BLEYMAIER:&nbsp;“I think, I mean today was a great example. One of the hotter, last days of training camp, in full pads. We started off slow on offense. Travis gets a route one-on-one, and we haven’t seen many completions out there today, and Trav beats his man one-on-one, breaks out for a 20-yard gain, and kind of sets the tone for everybody that ‘Hey, you get man to man coverage, we’re winning these routes. Let’s go.’ So, that, just the veteran that he is, the amount of years out here, and then when everybody was pushing through the dog days of camp, it was him who made the play one-on-one against the defense. That kind of just goes to that bigger picture where maybe you don’t recognize the years as much, because it’s just the same old Trav. That’s what he’s always been doing. But for him to be able to dig deep, and do that, I mean, that was just like a fountain of youth moment today in full pads out here.”

So, he can speak to Rashee (Rice) and Xavier (Worthy), Hollywood (Brown), Trav(is) (Kelce), a certain way. They have a communication that sometimes is unspoken, but then with Jalen and some of our newer tight ends and newer pass catchers, he’s been able to communicate exactly what he wants through their eyes. Which is, you can see him almost taking a breath and saying ‘Hey, I know exactly what you were thinking,’ or ‘here’s what I think you thought, and here’s how I saw it,’ and it’s just clicking. I think that’s a maturity and an experience thing from Patrick to be able to recognize the game through their eyes, and see it through their experience, and then meet them where they are. Different, you know, different skill sets, different types of players. I think we have a lot of talented players in the room. There’s a lot of really good competition. But yeah, I think you can balance speed, physicality, run after catch, you know, special teams, aspect. So, you want to have a lot of diversity in the room in terms of skill sets. But the special team’s aspect is huge. Especially for those depth guys.”Q: The offensive and defensive lines are always emphasized in the off-season as being a priority. This off-season did it seem like the offensive line had to be the top of list in conversation?BRADWAY:&nbsp;“Yeah, I think so. And listen, it wasn’t because of, you know, the Super Bowl. I think it was, I think that’s just kind of how we want to build the roster. And we want to infuse it with youth and talent. And fortunately, through free agency and the draft, we were able to do that. And feel good (that) it’s a good blend of youth experience, (and) I think guys with versatility. So really, really, encouraged by what we’ve seen so far.”Q: On being 31 on the waiver wire and how some rivals are high on the waiver wire.BRADWAY:&nbsp;“And that’s just the reality of it. It’s a good problem to have. You’ve hit on it pretty well; you’re far down on the claim. But yeah, right now, we’re talking to every team in the league. I mean, you know, myself, all our contacts, we’re just gathering information now. So, whether that would mean potentially trading for a guy, doing a play for a player swap, maybe trying to, maybe there could be a guy that you think would be available to claim. We’re going to be active. I mean, we’re going to watch as many tapes as possible. We’re going to, you know, and maybe it just doesn’t work out, but we’re going to identify certain players that we think could help us now (and) down the road and see where it goes.”ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER CHRIS SHEAQ: How important was it to get Trey Smith and George Karlaftis signed long-term?SHEA:&nbsp;“We were very excited to be able to get both of those contracts done and you know, zooming out to the big picture, one of the core operating principles we have that (General Manager Brett) Veech has adopted as the general manager here and goes all the way up to ownership is that we want to draft well and retain our own players to the maximum extent possible that’s feasible within our constraints and we were very happy to get both of those guys done as important starters on both offense and defense.”Q: On how the changing of salary cap affects their decisions for two to three years in the future.SHEA:&nbsp;“It is an educated guesstimate, based on a lot of factors but you know generally I think teams tend to be a little bit conservative with protecting the cap, so they make sure they don’t get themselves into any dangerous waters. If the cap comes in a little bit higher than we think, then that’s a pleasant problem to have. It’s sort of found money, for lack of a better term but we work through historical trends and how we see things moving in the future to try and give us a conservative and fair number to work with.”Q: On the second-round picks across the league not signing initially and if the Chiefs knew that was coming or if it was a curveball.
