The Salina Liberty mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday night but dropped their fourth straight AF1 contest at the hands of the Southwest Kansas Storm by a final score of 22-20.

With this result, the Liberty fall to 0-4 while the Storm improve to 3-2.

Salina started this game with a bang as Jamario Benson found Malik Honeycutt twice on the opening drive, including a shot to the end zone to put the Liberty on top 6-0.

The Liberty kept the momentum when they intercepted an errant Jalen Morton pass in the end zone on the Storm’s first drive but lost a bit of steam when a bad snap rolled to the back of the end zone for a safety.

Southwest Kansas picked up the pace offensively in the second quarter as Morton found Demarius Washington for a touchdown pass of his own, giving the Storm their first lead of the game 9-6.

In his return to Tony’s Pizza Events Center, the former Liberty star showed out, as Washington would catch 10 passes on 19 targets, finishing his day with 144 yards and two TDs.

A field goal late in the third quarter and the second touchdown pass to Washington put the Storm up 19-6, and it appeared to be all Southwest Kansas going into the fourth.

With a chance to put the game out of reach, the Storm threw a pass that was caught, jarred loose, deflected into the air, and tipped into the hands of DeWayne Autrey for the Morton’s third interception of the game.

In the midst of their next drive, Salina changed things up, returning Javin Kilgo under center, and Kilgo delivered, finding Honeycutt in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the day.

The Storm would stretch the lead back to nine with a made field goal, but Salina wasn’t done yet, scoring on a toss play to Tracy Brooks from the four-yard line to cut the lead to two.

Salina got the stop they needed on the ensuing drive but couldn’t find the score they needed with under a minute to go.

Seemingly out of the game, the Liberty stalled for time, but three straight stops, including one on third down that stopped the clock, and another on fourth down in the closing seconds, bought the Liberty one final chance to take the lead.

Austin Nuefield came out to attempt his second field goal of the day, but another bad snap rendered a kick impossible, as holder Tracy Brooks scrambled around and threw a desperation pass through the back of the end zone to secure the Liberty’s fate.

Salina will continue the homestand next Saturday at 6:30 when they play host to the Oregon Lightning while the Storm remain on the road to play the Corpus Christi Tritons on the same night.

The victory locks in the Coyotes into the KCAC playoffs which begin in two weeks.

KWU men's and women's tennis defeats Friends

WICHITA - Kansas Wesleyan Women's Track and Field continued its season this weekend at the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State University and Cessna Stadium.

Competing against some top NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior college athletes, the Coyotes had some outstanding performances.

Coyote Track and Field with strong performances at KT Woodman

BALDWIN CITY - Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football had their backs to the wall at the end of the game on Saturday against Baker University.

A huge defensive stand by the Coyotes would secure a 14-13 win in the Kansas Conference game between the teams.

It was the final KCAC game for Wesleyan, who still has two regular-season games left against Ottawa on Tuesday and Midland on Thursday, but both are non-conference games.

KWU will head into the KCAC tournament with an 8-1 record in conference play, and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament which starts April 25 in Kansas City.

KWU was holding onto the 14-13 advantage when Baker got the ball back at its own 11 with 1:45 left in the game. Baker drove to the KWU-8 when Wesleyan's defense kicked into high gear. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f90d26d3-685c-4bae-98ef-c465019dbb2b?elinkdata=24506">Alexa Mansur</a> was the hero for the Coyotes stopping Llorente for a 1-yard gain, then on back-to-back plays breaking up passes, including on fourth and goal at the KWU-2 to give the ball back to the Coyotes and secure the win.

Baker took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter with 2:17 left on an 11-yard play where Tara Llorente lateralled to Gabriella Zabaletta to finish the final seven yards.

The Wildcats took a 13-0 with 9:41 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard Llorente touchdown run.

The Coyotes finally got on the board as time expired in the first half. BALDWIN CITY - Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football had their backs to the wall at the end of the game on Saturday against Baker University.A huge defensive stand by the Coyotes would secure a 14-13 win in the Kansas Conference game between the teams.It was the final KCAC game for Wesleyan, who still has two regular-season games left against Ottawa on Tuesday and Midland on Thursday, but both are non-conference games.KWU will head into the KCAC tournament with an 8-1 record in conference play, and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament which starts April 25 in Kansas City.KWU was holding onto the 14-13 advantage when Baker got the ball back at its own 11 with 1:45 left in the game. KWU Flag Football uses defensive stand to beat Baker 14-13

HILLSBORO - Kansas Wesleyan Baseball picked up a pair of crucial Kansas Conference victories on Saturday as the Coyotes swept the Tabor Bluejays 11-8 and 17-9 at the Tabor College Baseball Field.

In the opener, the Coyotes jumped out to a 2-0 lead on <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/49799a58-fbb1-467c-aab8-087f1fd8065e?elinkdata=24475">Tyler Favretto's</a> 2-run homer that followed <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/962f69e3-6406-4c0f-ae83-d63c6959c19f?elinkdata=24475">Jacob Williamson</a> getting hit by a pitch.

Tabor tied it up in the bottom of the second inning, before the Coyotes scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Aurand homered in the seventh for the Coyotes.

Tabor got two runs in the seventh but could not find a way to rally, leaving the tying run at the plate on a ground out to end the game.

The first 11 runs of the second game came via a home run by both teams.

Tabor had a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Tabor got four runs in the fourth, three of them on a homer, but the Bluejays could only put one more on the board the rest of the way.

Coyote baseball sweeps Tabor to win series

Kansas Wesleyan Softball team hosted a KCAC foe as the Avila University Eagles came to town for a regular season double header. The Coyotes and Eagles would split one each on the day.

Game one the Coyotes put <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/63f42d17-bd2f-4b7a-96f2-08fb5fb25d87?elinkdata=24444">Caitlyn Collier</a> in the circle for the top of the first. KWU defense got out of the first with no damage after the Eagles left three runners stranded on base. The Coyotes couldn't find any runs themselves either as the Eagles held them to no hits through two innings.

KWU allowed zero runs and zero hits with only one error in the top second. The bats continued to find hits as KWU found four more hits. KWU softball earns split with Avila

CLEVELAND (AP) — Luis Ortiz allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 10 in his home debut for Cleveland as the Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Saturday night to extend their winning streak to five games.

Ortiz (1-2) had his second straight strong outing, giving up just a home run in the fourth inning to Vinnie Pasquantino before leaving after 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander was acquired in December from Pittsburgh.

Gabriel Arias homered and José Ramírez hit a sacrifice fly off Mike Lorenzen (1-2) as the Guardians remained unbeaten at home. Arias connected in the sixth inning. He has three homers this season — all against Kansas City.

The Royals entered the ninth with just two hits before getting four straight singles and scoring twice against Guardians All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, who hasn't been himself through the season's first two weeks.

Ortiz held Kansas City hitless until the fourth when Pasquantino drove a pitch over the wall in right-center with one out. It was Pasquantino's second homer and only the seventh in 2025 for the Royals, who came in tied with Toronto for the fewest in the majors.

Arias drove in Cleveland's first run with a single in the fourth. He has five RBIs in the last two games.

After giving up a one-out walk in the sixth while leading 2-1, Ortiz got a favorable called third strike from plate umpire Manny Gonzalez on an outside pitch to whiff Royals star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. for the second time.

At the plate, Abilene was led by Tyler Holloway, who drove in two runs on three hits as one of five Cowboys to record a multi-hit game.

After the marathon game one, both teams returned to the field with the sun setting fast, and while Abilene would equal their run total from the opener, the Trojans would have their revenge.

Things looked good for the Cowboys early, who took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but Southeast picked up the pace with four runs in the fourth and a whopping six in the fifth.

Down just 11-8, this game was still well within reach for Abilene, but the extra inning win in game one came at the cost of a light-shortened game two, and the Trojans took the victory in five.

The top two spots in the Trojan order led the charge, as Grady Gebhardt went 2-4 with 3 RBI, while Sam Knopf finished the day 2-3 with 2 driven in.

With these results, Southeast moves to 5-3 on the year, while Abilene advances to 2-6.

The Trojans will travel to Saline to face Sacred Heart on Monday, while the Cowboys make the trek to Marysville.

The Southeast of Saline softball team continued their reign of terror over the area on Friday night in a clean sweep of Abilene, defeating the 4A foe 12-0 in the opener and 13-8 in the nightcap.

In the circle, Karlee Zurfluh was close to unhittable, shutting out the Cowgirls while surrendering just three hits and two walks to six strikeouts.

The nightcap of this two-game set saw the floodgates open offensively, but SES was up to the challenge, coming back late to score 11 runs in the final four frames in an offensive win.

After a slow start for Southeast, the Cowgirls struck for three runs in the third and fourth to take a 6-1 lead at the halfway mark.

That lead wouldn’t last long as the Lady Trojans tacked on eight runs in a monster fourth inning, adding two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the 13-8 win.

Abby Wyatt’s assault on softballs continued as the senior went 3-4 with 5 RBI on the day, while Ashley Whelchel drove in two runs of her own in the winning effort.

Madelyn McFadden and Karlee Zurfluh came in to clean up the final four innings in the circle, allowing just three runs and two walks while recording two strikeouts.

With these wins, the Lady Trojans move to 5-1 on the year and are on a four-game winning streak, while Abilene’s hunt for a win continues at 0-8.&nbsp;

SES will be back in action on Monday when they make the short trip to Salina to take on Sacred Heart.

🥎 Lady Trojans take two from Abilene to win their fourth straight

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State women’s basketball guard Serena Sundell has been invited to attend the WNBA Draft 2025 presented by State Farm on Monday night at The Shed in New York City. Sundell is one of 15 players invited to be in attendance for the draft, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. (CT) with live coverage on ESPN and the ESPN App.

Sundell is in line to become the ninth player in school history to be selected in the WNBA Draft. Sundell would be the 12th player overall to become a part of the league and first since Breanna Lewis in the 2018 season.

A 2025 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Associated Press (AP) All-America honorable mention selection, Sundell led the nation with a career-high and school record for total assists (262) and paced the nation and led the Big 12 with a career-high for assists per game (7.28 apg) and was second in the Big 12 for assist-turnover ratio (2.52). She recorded a league-best nine games with 10 or more assists.

The product of Maryville, Missouri, was second on the team in scoring average with 14.1 points per game and led the Wildcats with 508 points, which was the second-highest total of her career on a .501 field goal percentage. She was the only player in the nation this season and the third player since 1993-94 to register a season with 500 or more points, 250 or more assists and shoot 50.0 percent or better from the field.

She registered a career-high 31 blocked shots (0.86 bpg) and pulled in 159 rebounds (4.4 rpg), which was the second-highest rebound total in her career.

Sundell, a 2025 All-Big 12 First Team, registered a career-high eight double-doubles this season. She was the first Big 12 player since the 2022-23 season and the fifth player in program history to register a triple-double with 26 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds against USC Upstate on Dec. 5, 2024.

With her point (508) and assist (262) totals this season, Sundell was the first player in Big 12 history to record four seasons with 350 or more points and 150 or more assists. She joined former Wildcat Kayla Goth as the only two players in program history with 500 or more points and 200 or more assists in a season.

In her career, Sundell holds the school records for career starts (139) and games played (139). She holds the school record and ranks fourth in Big 12 history for career assists with 811 and is second in program history for career assists per game (5.83 apg). Five Cleveland pitchers combined for the second shutout of the homestand. Tim Herrin (2-0) got the win after starter Tanner Bibee went 4 1/3 innings.

Arias snapped an 0 for 15 skid with a base hit in the second inning. He then connected on a first-pitch fastball from Royals' starter Kris Bubic (0-1) in the fourth inning and put it into the stands in right-center for his second homer of the season.

The three runs were the first earned runs Bubic had allowed in 26 2/3 innings dating to last season.

Martínez, called up from Triple A Columbus on Wednesday, also had a sacrifice fly in a four-run eighth inning to drive in Nolan Jones. Steven Kwan and Carlos Santana added RBI singles and Brayan Rocchio scored from second base after Royals' second baseman Jonathan India had a fly ball by José Ramírez pop out of his glove. It was India's second error of the game.

Kyle Manzardo was safe at second base when the throw by India after fielding Jhonkensy Noel’s grounder was wide and pulled Michael Massey off the bag. That put runners at first and second when Arias came up.

Cleveland's starting pitchers have posted a 1.42 ERA in the team's last five games and have given up only four earned runs in 25 1/3 innings. The Guardians' rotation had a 7.05 ERA in their first eight games.

Along the route, they’ll encounter a vibrant mix of captivating Chiefs fun fact signs and dynamic interactive stations, including towering 12-foot-tall Vince Lombardi Trophies, large Super Bowl rings and a giant Patrick Mahomes bobblehead.
