Jefferson Cook has been named women's and men's golf coach at Kansas Wesleyan.

Cook has extensive experience in the Kansas Conference, having played for Southwestern and as the current head coach at York. He will begin his duties at KWU after the completion of the 2024-25 season.

"Excited, and ready for the next chapter of my life," Cook said. "My wife (Jordyn) and I both are super excited to be moving to Salina, ready to get in and work hard to build a championship program again."

Cook has played or coached in the KCAC the last seven years - five as a golfer at Southwestern, one as a graduate assistant at the school and one at York where he has been since last May.

Cook said he was impressed with the KWU program as a player and coach and was sold on the institution during his visit to campus.

"I've actually never seen a KCAC/NAIA campus quite like K-Dub's," he said. "Not that other campuses don't have anything nice, but it just has a different feel to it. It felt more like a smaller Division One and I really liked that aspect.

"The people that I met with were super friendly, super nice and just the overall atmosphere at K-Dub feels right. It's closer to home for my wife and I, closer to our family and our friends."

A 2023 graduate from Southwestern Cook had several top 10 finishes as a player and was the team's MVP for the 2022-23 season. He also was a KCAC Scholar Athlete and KCAC Champion of Character.

Cook's experience in the KCAC stood out during the interview process.

"It's a great hire because he's familiar with the conference," KWU Director of Athletics <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/3c02f13f-b79c-441c-9406-e3383ff04033?elinkdata=24909">Miguel Paredes</a> said. "He's able to recruit, he's hungry for success and I believe with the right support he can accomplish everything he wants to. We are the missing link to what he needs to really make a name for himself. He fits what we're trying to do here."

As a competitor at Southwestern Cook was impressed with the Coyotes approached the game.

"When I was playing it was usually pretty tough to beat Kansas Wesleyan," he said. "They were very professional. They knew what their duty was out on the golf course, and they just seemed to carry themselves differently than some other teams.

"I coached against Coleman (Houk, former KWU coach) and he was always super kind and super ready to go out and get a (win) every time. A go-get-'em kind of attitude towards golf."

"That's what I've been telling my players that I have currently and all my recruits - if you're going to come play for me come ready to work hard," Cook said. "That's the expectation I have for them, basically instill that in them so we can build a winning program.

Kansas Wesleyan selects Jefferson Cook as Women's and Men's Golf Coach

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the seventh inning that ended a 10-game drought, and the New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

With a runner at second base in the ninth, Cody Bellinger made a diving catch in right field on MJ Melendez’s sinking liner to preserve Fernando Cruz’s first career save.

Judge went deep for the first time since April 4 in Pittsburgh when he lifted a 1-0 sinker from John Schreiber (1-1) into the New York bullpen beyond the right-center fence.

Judge had three hits for the third time this season. He reached base four times and his batting average climbed 27 points to a major league-best .409.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt had some dominant moments and pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball in his season debut. After recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, the right-hander permitted four hits and threw 73 pitches.

Anthony Volpe hit a two-run double in the third and Bellinger had an RBI double in the fourth to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Schmidt retired 11 straight before Drew Waters opened the fifth with a single and scored on Kyle Isbel's triple. Isbel scored the tying run on a groundout by Jonathan India.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single four batters in before Schmidt settled down.

Kansas City starter Kris Bubic allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Mark Leiter Jr. (2-1) got four outs after Schmidt was lifted, and Cruz pitched two scoreless innings.

After the Royals tied the game, Bobby Witt Jr. swung at the first pitch and flied out to end the fifth.

Judge entered hitting .382 (13 for 34) over his previous 10 games.

Harrod, a product of Oklahoma City, is a four-star prospect and ranked number 59 overall by ESPNHoopGurlz. She is also a 4-star prospect and the number 38 rated player in the nation by ProspectsNation.com. During her high school career with Putnam City North, Harrod averaged 19.0 points per game, 6.0 assists, 9.0 rebounds and 1 block. K-State concluded the 2024-25 season with its 19th NCAA Tournament bid and the fourth Sweet 16 appearance in program history. Kansas is represented in the 2025 NFF Hampshire Society by Grayden Addison, Tabor Allen, JB Brown, Logan Brown, Cobee Bryant, Shane Bumgardner, OJ Burroughs, Jared Casey, Jalon Daniels, Dylan Downing, Emory Duggar, Devin Dye, Michael Ford Jr., Jayson Gilliom, Luke Hosford, Trevor Kardell, Torry Locklin, Landon Nelson, Cole Petrus, Quentin Skinner, Trevor Wilson and Dylan Wudke.

Under head coach Lance Leipold, Kansas football has set GPA program records in both the fall and spring semesters and been above a 3.0 GPA for six consecutive semesters. The Jayhawks have also had five players named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America since 2022.

Since its inception, the initiative has honored 20,946 student-athletes. This year’s members represented six divisions: 689 from the FBS, 549 from the FCS, 212 from Division II, 978 from Division III, 58 from the NAIA, and 46 sprint football players. They hailed from schools in every state and the District of Columbia—except Alaska, which does not sponsor an eligible college football program. The FBS cohort came from 120 schools, reflecting a 90 percent participation rate.

Nine Wildcats Named to Hampshire Honor Society

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State women’s basketball student-athlete Serena Sundell continued to receive recognition for her work in the classroom, as she has been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Second Team.

This was Sundell’s first career CSC Academic All-America honor. She is the ninth K-State women’s basketball student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors and the fourth in the Jeff Mittie era.

In addition to her Academic All-America honor, Sundell is a three-time CSC Academic All-District VII honoree, a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, earned the 2024 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award and was a 2022 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team selection.

She graduated in May 2024 with her bachelor’s degree in organizational management and is pursuing her master’s degree in business administration.

On the court in 2024-25, Sundell was a 2025 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Associated Press (AP) All-America honorable mention selection. She led the nation with a career-high and school record for total assists (262) and paced the nation and led the Big 12 with a career-high for assists per game (7.28 apg) and was second in the Big 12 for assist-turnover ratio (2.52). She recorded a league-best nine games with 10 or more assists.

The product of Maryville, Missouri, was second on the team in scoring average with 14.1 points per game and led the Wildcats with 508 points, which was the second-highest total of her career on a .501 field goal percentage. Sundell was the only player in the nation this season and the third player since 1993-94 to register a season with 500 or more points, 250 or more assists and shoot 50.0 percent or better from the field.

She registered a career-high 31 blocked shots (0.86 bpg) and pulled in 159 rebounds (4.4 rpg), which was the second-highest rebound total in her career.

Sundell, a 2025 All-Big 12 First Team, registered a career-high eight double-doubles this season. She was the first Big 12 player since the 2022-23 season and the fifth player in program history to register a triple-double with 26 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds against USC Upstate on Dec. 5, 2024.

With her point (508) and assist (262) totals this season, Sundell was the first player in Big 12 history to record four seasons with 350 or more points and 150 or more assists. She joined former Wildcat Kayla Goth as the only two players in program history with 500 or more points and 200 or more assists in a season.

In her career, Sundell holds the school records for career starts (139) and games played (139). She holds the school record and ranks fourth in Big 12 history for career assists with 811 and is second in program history for career assists per game (5.83 apg). She ranks sixth on the K-State career scoring list with 1,771 points. She ranks tied for seventh in school history for career blocks (104).

She was the first player in school history and the 14th&nbsp;in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history with 1,700 or more career points and 800 or more career assists.

K-State concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 13th&nbsp;in the Associated Press poll and 15th&nbsp;in the USA Today Coaches poll and were ranked in both polls for the entirety of the season. STERLING - Kansas Wesleyan Baseball rallied from a 5-2 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Sterling College Warriors on Tuesday at the Sterling College baseball field.

The victory completes Wesleyan's three-game midweek series sweep over the Warriors.

Kansas Wesleyan Sweeps KCAC Baseball Weekly Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has added a decorated backcourt piece to the 2025-26 roster, as Tess Heal has signed with the Wildcats.

Heal is a product of Melbourne, Australia, and is the second player in program history from Australia (Rebekah Dallinger, 2021-24).

The 5-10 guard played the 2024-25 season at Stanford, where she was the only player in NCAA Division I last season to card a field goal percentage of 50.0 percent or better (.503) and a three-point percentage of 45.0 percent or better (.493) (min. of 2 three-point attempts per game; 30 or more games played).

Heal tallied 239 points (8.0 ppg) with 11 games in double figures including a season-high 24 points at Wake Forest on January 26. She hauled in 60 rebounds (2.0 rpg) and dished out 35 assists (1.2 apg) while pocketing 14 steals and blocked eight shots.

Prior to her season at Stanford, Heal played her first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Santa Clara in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. During her time with the Broncos, Heal was a two-time All-West Coast Conference (WCC) First Team selection, the 2023 WCC Newcomer of the Year and named to the 2023 WCC All-Freshman Team. She was a six-time WCC Player of the Week recipient and set the conference-record as a 12-time WCC Freshman of the Week.

While with Santa Clara, Heal averaged 18.6 points on a .472 field goal percentage, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 32.2 minutes of action. Over her two seasons at Santa Clara, Heal was one of three players in the nation (Caitlin Clark, Iowa; Rachael Rose, Wofford) to shoot at least 45.0 percent from the field and average 18 points, four rebounds and four assists.

She ranks 11th&nbsp;in Santa Clara women’s basketball history for career points (1,225), second in scoring average (18.6), fifth in free throws made (332), second in free throw percentage (.867) and 10th in assists (296).

Before coming to the United States, Heal played for the Australian U19 and U18 national teams. In 2023, Heal averaged 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Madrid, Spain. In 2022, Heal helped Australia to a gold medal at the FIBA U18 Asian Championship. Division A in Bengaluru, India, where she averaged 7.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

Fourth Kansas Wesleyan Coaches Luncheon event of year is April 23

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior David N’Guessan has received a bid to play in the Portsmouth Invitational, which is set for Wednesday-Saturday, April 16-19 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Operating since 1953, the Portsmouth Invitational is one of the preeminent NBA pre-draft camps with approximately 200 NBA representatives in attendance. The four-day tournament consists of 12 games with 64 invited college seniors playing on eight teams of eight players.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Following her strong season with K-State in 2024-25, Temira Poindexter has signed a free agent contract with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. Poindexter is the fourth player in program history to sign a free agent WNBA deal.

In her lone season in Manhattan, Poindexter garnered All-Big 12 Third Team honors. She registered 451 points (12.5 ppg ) on a career-high 45.5 percent from the field.

The product of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, shot a career-high 40.0 percent from three-point range and while making a career-high 92 three-pointers (92-of-230). She also notched a career-high 43 steals. Her 92 three-pointers ranked third in a senior season in program history and fifth in program history for any single season.

In K-State’s second round NCAA Tournament win at Kentucky, Poindexter carded a season-best 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting from long range, six rebounds and six blocked shots. She set the school record for 3-point field goals made in an NCAA Tournament game.

Despite their inexperience, the nine-time defending state champion Sacred Heart golf team held their own at the Bishop Carroll Invitational, finishing sixth in a field that featured exclusively larger schools.

In a field of over 100 golfers, three members of the Knight's lineup managed to finish inside the top 30, led by Luke Newell (16th), Will Tuttle (25th), and Dom Matteucci (30th).

“Rolling Hills is a tough golf course," Sacred Heart golf coach Patrick Newell said. "The greens are lightning fast, and many of the holes require precise tee shots.”

All five teams that finished ahead of Sacred Heart hail from Class 5A, and the top four are all likely to be in the hunt for a 5A state title, putting the Knights in very rare air.

The Southeast of Saline and Sacred Heart baseball teams played in a pivotal league doubleheader on Monday and split the set with the Knights winning game one 4-3 in walk-off fashion, and the Trojans holding on to win game two by the same score.

Game One: Sacred Heart 4, SE of Saline 3

The opener was a true back-and-forth affair that saw Southeast strike first on a Sam Knopf RBI single in the first and add to the lead with an RBI knock from Tysen Keller in the third.

That lead would be short-lived as the Knights responded with two runs of their own in the fourth on a pair of RBI groundouts.

In the sixth, Sacred Heart would put the Trojans down to their final three outs with a pair of doubles from Luke Koland and Maddox Wells, but Southeast stayed alive in the seventh on a mad dash to the plate that scored Ian Nickelson on a passed ball.

Looking to avoid extra innings, the Knights got to work in the home half of the seventh, and after recording two outs, Graham Armstrong reached on a walk, advanced on a Luke Koland single, and came in to score the decisive run on a Maddox Wells walk-off single.

Wells and Armstrong were also the two pitchers of record in this game, combining to toss seven innings and allowing just three runs on seven hits.

Game Two: SE of Saline 4, Sacred Heart 3

The Trojans got off to a much better start in game two, rattling off four runs on six hits in the top of the second inning.

Unfortunately for Southeast, those would be their last hits of the game, and the Trojans would need to rely on pitching and defense to win the day.

Little by little, the Knights came back in this game, scoring three runs without the aid of a single RBI, thanks to good sacrifice bunts and a pair of wild pitches.

A run in the second, another in the fourth and one more in the fifth would make this a 4-3 game, but that was all the closer the Knights would get as Tiernan Ptacek slammed the door shut in the final two frames.

Ptacek went the distance in this game, tossing seven innings and allowing just three runs on five hits, walking just one batter while fanning five.

With this split, SES improves to 6-4 on the year and 3-1 in league play, while Sacred Heart moves to 5-4 and 4-2 respectively.

SES will be on the road this Thursday to take on the 5-3 Irish of Chapman, while Sacred Heart returns to Salina to face Republic County.

⚾️ Trojans and Knights split pivotal NCAA doubleheader 

The Southeast of Saline softball team kept the good times rolling on Monday, tossing a pair of shutouts to sweep Sacred Heart 11-0 and 14-0.

Game One: SE of Saline 11, Sacred Heart 0

Southeast wasted no time getting on the board in game one, striking for three runs in the top of the first, and following that with another in the second, five more in the third, and a pair in the fifth to force the mercy rule.

At the plate, the Lady Trojans shared the wealth once again, with eight different players recording a hit and five different players driving in at least a run.

Abby Wyatt continues to swing one of the hottest bats in the state of Kansas, turning in another 4-4 performance with two more driven in.

Kyiah Samelson was an RBI machine in the opener, bringing four runs across on two hits and scoring two times as well.

In the circle, Karlee Zurfluh dominated, allowing just one hit in five scoreless innings while recording eight strikeouts and issuing no walks.

Game Two: SE of Saline 14, Sacred Heart 0

SES picked up right where they left off in the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead into the second, but the Knights actually managed to silence the Southeast bats through the second and third.

That momentum would not hold, however, and in both the fourth and fifth innings, SES rattled off six unanswered runs to once again end the game early.

The Lady Trojan lineup somehow managed to one-up itself with nine different players recording a hit in game two and seven driving in a run.

While everyone contributed, Kimber Ogorzolka was the star of the show in the nightcap, cashing in a 3-3 performance at the plate, highlighted by four RBI.

Avery Kinkelaar looked borderline unhittable in the circle, completing the second complete game shutout of the day and allowing just one hit and three walks to five strikeouts.

With these results, the Lady Trojans improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play, while the Lady Knights slide to 1-7 and 1-5 respectively.

SES will be on the road this Thursday to take on the white hot 8-0 Lady Irish of Chapman, while Sacred Heart returns to Salina to face Republic County.

🥎 Southeast softball sweeps Sacred Heart in Salina

The Sacred Heart state golf title defense is off to a strong start as on Thursday, the Knights punched up to win the McPherson Invitational, a tournament that included several 4 and 5A schools.

Sacred Heart is in search of an unprecedented 10th-straight state golf championship, and is working with a mostly new squad after graduating four seniors last spring.

The Knights claimed victory at the McPherson Invite, carding a 318 as a team, good enough to keep Buhler at bay by two strokes.

Will Tuttle, Dom Matteucci and Luke Newell led the charge from the top ten, finishing third, fifth and ninth respectively, with Luke Newell hot on their heels in 11th.

Sacred Heart golf wins McPherson Invitational

The Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation has announced its special recognition awards for the 2024-25 academic year.

The winners will be honored at the annual chapter&nbsp;awards dinner to be conducted May 7 at the Shamrock Plaza at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kan. Check-in and a reception begin at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. (NOTE:&nbsp;12 student-athletes who are high school seniors in 2024-25 will be announced later as Sunflower Chapter scholarship award winners).

Andover Central head coach Derek Tuttle&nbsp;and&nbsp;Southeast of Saline head coach Mitch Gebhardt&nbsp;were named the Don Fambrough Coaches of the Year. The legendary late Kansas head football coach, Fambrough was also a member of the Jayhawks’ 1947 Orange Bowl team. He led the Jayhawks to the 1973 Liberty and 1981 Hall of Fame bowls.

A native of Grinnell, Kan., Tuttle played two years at Bethany College before completing his education at Kansas State. He has been a fixture at Andover schools since 1998 and became head coach at Andover Central in 2019, registering a 57-15 record in six years. That includes Class 4A runner-up finishes in 2019, 21, 23 and the title this past season, defeating Bishop Miege 49-42. Gebhardt, who graduated from Ellsworth High School and Fort Hays State University, is 143-74 in 22 years combined at Lincoln and Southeast of Saline. Southeast of Saline is 54-4 in his last five seasons. The Trojans claimed the Class 2A title this past season with a 36-28 win over Nemaha Central.

The Kansas Coaching Legends Lifetime Achievement award will be given to&nbsp;Tom Young. Trailing only Silver Lake's C.J. Hamilton and Pittsburg Colgan's Chuck Smith as the winningest HS football coach in Kansas history with a 343-11 record in 44 years (Hanover: 1971-79; Wellington: 1980-82; Derby: 1983-2003; Leavenworth: 2004-05; McPherson: 2006-14). He has state championships in 1979, 1982, 1994. He is originally from Adams, Neb.

The John and Phil Laurie Officiating Award goes to&nbsp;David Haynes, a resident of Wichita, Kan. He has been self-employed in the construction industry for the past 20 years and began working high school football in 2014. Since then, he has worked 19 playoff games in that span. He officiated high school basketball from 1992-2000 working several substate rounds. He also officiated college basketball from 1995-2023, working numerous KCAC and Jayhawk conference championships. Haynes worked several NAIA regional championships and three NJCAA Division I National Tournaments, twice officiating the national championship.

The Dick Foster Legacy Award, created last year and awarded posthumously to the Jayhawk Conference coaching legend will be presented to&nbsp;Troy Morrell.&nbsp;Born in Benkelman, Neb., and a graduate of Buhler, Kan. High School, he played at Butler Community College and later Fort Hays State University. He returned to Butler as the OL coach and OC from 1996-1999. From 2000-14 he was the Butler head coach, amassing a 154-22 mark including a 30-3 mark in the NJCAA Region VI playoffs. He won NJCAA national titles in 2003, 07, 08.
