KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs so thoroughly dominated the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday that they probably didn't need Rashee Rice, who had come back from a torn ACL and a six-game suspension to give them yet another dynamic weapon.

The rest of the season? Well, the Chiefs think Rice may be the last piece they need to chase another championship.

“We have a lot of weapons. We have a lot of guys and they all love each other, and they want each other to succeed,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns — two of them to Rice — in a 31-0 victory so lopsided that the two-time league MVP got to spend the entire fourth quarter watching it from the bench.

“We want to be better than what we are now,” Mahomes said, “but this was a good step in the right direction.”

Rice finished with seven catches for 42 yards in his first game&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-rashee-rice-9475202aa5efade7b9a9be140e2c798c">since Week 4 last season,</a>&nbsp;when he tore up his knee in a collision with Mahomes. Rice made it back from the injury in time to participate in the offseason and training camp, then was suspended before the start of the season for his role in a high-speed car crash on a Dallas highway in March 2024.

Rice's return sparked an offense that scored on its first five possessions against Las Vegas and finished with 434 yards in all.

“I think it's a glimpse of what's possible,” Rice said, “and what's to come.”

It didn't help ailing Las Vegas to play most of the game&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/las-vegas-raiders-kansas-city-chiefs-36d67adf45a07ee045b9e377dae23b07">without star pass rusher Maxx Crosby</a>, who left late in the first half with a knee injury. The Raiders also lost defensive tackle Adam Butler to a back injury during the game.

The Chiefs (4-3) were nearly as good on defense, though, holding the Raiders to three first downs and 96 yards while beating them for the 10th time in the last 11 matchups. Geno Smith finished 10 of 16 for 67 yards, while Ashton Jeanty, one of the NFL's top rookies, carried just six times for 21 yards.

It was the fourth and most lopsided shutout by Kansas City in its 133-game history against the Raiders.

“This was a game I didn't see coming,” Raiders coach Pete Carroll said. “We prepared really well. We were tuned in. I couldn't imagine the guys that weren't able to play in this game would have been that much of a factor.”

In truth, the Chiefs had started to hum the past couple of weeks, including in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-analysis-5ebcfaffabfb346389fc4fe5bd53e019">a 30-17 rout of the Lions</a>&nbsp;last week. And with Rice, it looked like the high-flying attack that Mahomes made famous with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill so many years ago.

Rice had a pair of catches on their opening drive, including a 2-yard touchdown reception to finish off the 92-yard march. He had two more on the next drive, an 84-yard trek that Marquise Brown finished with a TD catch. And Rice capped the Chiefs' big first half with a 3-yard touchdown reception with 10 seconds left to make it 21-0 at the break.

“I think you saw the trust that Pat has in him,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid. “The energy he brings is infectious.”

The lopsided nature of the first half was staggering.

The Chiefs had a 21-2 advantage in first downs. They had a 275-51 edge in yards, and that includes six meaningless yards that Jeanty gained on the final run of the half. And the Chiefs became the first team since at least 2000 to start a game with three TD drives of at least 80 yards, allowing them to consume nearly 21 minutes of the first half.

Oh, and the Chiefs got to receive the second-half kickoff.

They proceeded to march 65 yards for another touchdown, this time with Isiah Pacheco doing the honors on the ground to finish it off. And after another three-and-out by the Raiders, a 66-yard march produced a field goal that made it 31-0.

Mahomes and several starters took a seat by the end of the third quarter, allowing Gardner Minshew to finish the rout.

“Very seldom do you have a fourth quarter where you don't throw the ball. It doesn't happen very often,” Reid said.

The only question remaining was whether the Raiders would make it back across midfield again. They made it for two offensive plays on the first drive of the game, when a holding call on Jackson Powers-Johnson led to them eventually punting.

“They're a terrific team,” Carroll said. “They did everything like they do. And the played really well in all phases, and they kept us totally at bay. We couldn't make a first down and couldn't get off the field. They just did like they do.”

Las Vegas: WR Jakobi Meyers (knee) and TE Brock Bowers (knee) were inactive. Crosby and Butler only added to the problems.

Kansas City: LT Josh Simmons was inactive due to personal reasons. LG Trey Smith left with a back injury, DT Omar-Norman Lott hurt his knee and RT Jawaan Taylor banged up his shoulder.

The Raiders are off next week before facing Jacksonville on Nov. 2.

The Chiefs play Washington next Monday night.

 🏈 Rashee Rice returns with 2 TDs as Chiefs rout the Raiders

LEAVENWORTH - <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/0dbcc4cf-31e9-4502-8556-c075424f103e?elinkdata=31003">Henry Austad</a> wasn't feeling great, but you wouldn't have known it watching him play.

Austad, who missed Kansas Wesleyan's previous game two weeks ago against Evangel because of an injury, threw for 303 yards, a touchdown and ran for another in leading the Coyotes to a 42-21 Kansas Conference and Gene Bissell Division victory Saturday afternoon at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium.

The Coyotes ended a two-game losing streak and raised their record to 5-2, 1-0 in the division.

Austad completed 24 of 36 passes with no interceptions and was sacked once as KWU posted a season-high point total.

"You could tell just watching him out there Henry's not a hundred percent, but he gutted this one out. He is a tough, tough, tough dude," coach <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e0ce1044-5391-4e86-84a5-4cdaec59cbc0?elinkdata=31003">Matt Middleton</a> said on the postgame radio show. "For him to be able to come back in two weeks from his injury and sit in the pocket and make some things happens with his legs says a lot about who he is as a person, as a competitor."

Austad wasn't the only Coyote who had a big game. Running back <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/fd5c1b5e-6977-4135-b3ca-2ccb0fd72256?elinkdata=31003">D'Heaven Domena</a> ran for 90 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns - three rushing and one receiving. Wide receiver <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5c305849-0f72-424c-aaf1-29b77705033d?elinkdata=31003">Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey</a> caught eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown while wide out <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/54c25d64-12e3-408e-a831-55dc04245fbd?elinkdata=31003">Jevin Dorsey</a> had seven receptions for 88 yards as Wesleyan outgained Saint Mary in total yards 476-315.

Dorsey returned to the lineup after missing three games with an injury, but fellow end <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/30fde88e-6fab-4810-a419-be3bd2d98a93?elinkdata=31003">Will Wilcox</a> didn't play after suffering an injury during practice Thursday.

"I don't know that I've ever been through a year where we've had so many key starters or people be out for the year," Middleton said. "Sure wish I had all my bullets, but it is what it is. I'm super proud of these kids and how hard they've worked and how they've kept chopping wood with a chance to continue to win games."

The Coyotes were magnificent defensively as usual. After allowing two first quarter touchdowns the Spires didn't score again until the 5:06 mark of the fourth quarter.

KWU entered the game with three interceptions on the season but picked off four passes Saturday - two by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e2d80082-2078-45d4-8628-6bf55daa1451?elinkdata=31003">Taylor Collins</a> and one each by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ee9dbf21-72bf-4c5e-bd59-17ce593bf1ab?elinkdata=31003">Jamison Price</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ef459dbf-1843-449e-ac27-0dfa272a1d0f?elinkdata=31003">Brennon Allen</a>. Price led the defense with 10 tackles while Allen had eight.

The Coyotes scored first on Domena's one-yard run with 10:42 left in the first quarter. Saint Mary took a 14-7 lead with back-to-back touchdowns, but KWU tied it 14-14 on the third play of the second quarter on Austad's 57-yard bomb to Lomax-Spivey.

Austad was hurt three plays after Collins' first interception and briefly left the game. Backup quarter <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/86c663f4-b154-4f22-a7d5-d08b27ac0f7e?elinkdata=31003">Caden Middleton</a> came on and promptly threw a screen pass to Domena who sprinted 51 yards for a touchdown that gave KWU a 21-14 lead with 3:59 left in the half.

Domena's third touchdown on a one-yard came with 31 seconds left in the half finished a nine-play, 93-yard drive that gave the Coyotes a 28-14 lead they took into intermission.

Austad one-yard run with 6:19 remaining in the third quarter made it 35-14 and capped a 12-play, 77-yard drive. Domena's fourth touchdown, a nine-yard run with 10:22 left in the game ended the KWU scoring. It came three plays after Allen's interception.

The Coyotes had no turnovers and only three penalties.

"We made plays on both sides of the ball," Middleton said. "Defense has carried us a little bit after the injuries, but to be honest with you we needed that. We needed to play big on offense and we did that today."

🏈 KWU opens Bissell Division play topping Spires 42-21

The Southeast of Saline Trojans traveled to Halstead on Friday night to clash with the Halstead Dragons in an effort to remain undefeated.&nbsp;

Despite coming into the contest with a 1-5 record, Halstead did not back down.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Dragons used a little trickery on the first drive of the game, drawing first blood on a 62-yard halfback pass for a touchdown to Noah Diehl for the game’s first score.

That was immediately followed by a successful onside kick off attempt, giving Halstead the ball back for their second drive of the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The next scoring attempt was thwarted, however, as Tiernan Ptacek intercepted a Halstead pass.

In his starting debut at quarterback, Ptacek then engineered a 6-play, 71-yard drive, capped off by a 7-yard Grady Gebhardt touchdown run, as the Trojans took custody of the lead for good in their 55-14 victory over Halstead.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Southeast scored two more touchdowns in the opening quarter courtesy of Gebhardt to lead at the end of the quarter by a score of 20-7.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Southeast put the exclamation point on the scoring with three of their four second-quarter touchdowns coming in the final 3:10 of the quarter, highlighted by a 67-yard pick-six from Bryson Lippold to lead 48-7 at the half.

Each team added one more touchdown in the second half, giving the Trojans the victory as they move to 7-0 on the season.

Gebhardt paced the Trojans with 85 yards and 3 touchdowns on 14 rushes, and 143 yards and 2 touchdowns on 2 receptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ptacek completed 8 of 11 passes for 266 yards and 4 touchdowns, while throwing just 1 interception.

Southeast will close out the regular season by hosting Ellsworth next Friday, as Halstead falls to 1-6 and will travel to Lyons.

🏈 Trojans slay Dragons in Halstead, roll to 7-0

The Salina South Cougars played a nearly perfect game of football on Friday, steamrolling Campus to the tune of 55-6 for their first victory of the season.

The Cougars allowed just two first downs and zero points on their first nine defensive possessions, while the South offense scored a touchdown on its first eight offensive possessions.

Sophomore quarterback Izzy Telles played the game of his life, completing 12 of his 13 passes for 279 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions for a perfect passer rating, all in just the first half.

The first of those scores went to Jay Curtis, who hauled in the game's first score from nine yards away.

The second came on a fumble into the end zone that was scooped up by Slade Pickrell for six.

Myers caught four passes for 156 yards, finding paydirt on all four to give South a commanding 41-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Armane Redmond joined in on the fun, waltzing into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown run.

Telles would find Curtis for the wideout’s second, and the quarterback’s sixth touchdown of the day to put the game even further out of reach.

The clock ran throughout the entire second half, and Campus tacked on one score late in the third, but it was far too little far too late as the Cougars cruised to victory.

The Sacred Heart Knights improve their win streak to 5 on Senior night, after a shutout victory over the Herington Railers.

In Week 7 of KS High School Football, the Knights hosted the Railers at JRI Stadium. The Knights entered the game after a blowout victory over the Bennington Bulldogs and had all the momentum coming into this game, with hopes of keeping their win streak alive.

Early on, the Knights got on the board first in their first offensive drive with a 20-yard TD pass from Maddox Wells to Dom Matteucci. The Knights successfully converted a 2-pt conversion, bringing the score 8-0 in the 1st quarter.&nbsp;

After a defensive stop, the Knights answered again with a 14-yard TD pass from Wells to Noah Hines, tallying the score 14-0.

Heading into the 2nd quarter, the Knights got the ball back on the offense once more after another defensive stop. The Knights charged towards the 16-yard line of the Railers, but Wells fumbled the ball with Elias Gordon recovering it for a loss of 24.

However, on the very next play Wells found Hines yet again for a 40-yard TD pass, making the score 20-0.

Shortly after, the Knights continued their offensive onslaught as Hines picked up his 3rd TD of the day receiving a 30-yard TD pass from Wells, tallying the score 26-0.

After a Railers 3 and out, Wells added more to the scoreboard with a 15-yard rushing TD and a successful Knight 2-pt conversion, adding the score 34-0, ending the 2nd quarter.

Once the seniors of Sacred Heart were recognized at Halftime, the Knights continued applying the offensive downpour on the Railers with a opening TD drive, as Wells completed a 12-yard TD pass to Rowan Ontiveros.&nbsp;

The Railers responded as Cameron Strauss completed a 25-yard pass to Jahcure Thomas. Strauss picked up several yards on the ground afterwards, bringing the Railers to a 1st and goal on the 1-yard line.

Not only did the Knights look sharp on offense, but their defense too as they stopped the Railers 4 times, preventing the Railers from scoring.

The Coyotes have won the last seven games including a 38-19 victory last season in Leavenworth. They've outscored the Spires 332-63 during the winning streak. KWU has a 19-4 advantage in the series since 2001.

"I felt like Caden did a really good job managing the game (vs. Evangel). Obviously, there's a couple throws I'd like to have back from him; there's a busted coverage I'd like to have back too. We ran 73 plays to their 49; we had 38 minutes of clock possession of a 60-minute game. We set out to do that.

"What I saw (against Evangel) was a flash of a really good football team playing another really good football team. Even though we're 4-2 that's the first point that I felt, 'okay, we're solid.' If we can continue to play this brand of football, we'll be able to compete with a lot of them down the stretch.

"At the end of the day football is about explosives. I hate to say this but the longer you're on the field the worse things can happen. We had a 17-play drive against Evangel, and we came away with three points. What we don't have is big play breakaway capability and that is a speed thing. We lack top speed to be able to break long runs and take the top off (pass defenses). That's not a knock on the guys that are here, it's just facts. We are doing our best to try to manufacture some explosives with some different looks that we're giving.

"(Saint Mary) is a scary team on paper. Offensively, they're electric, they have playmakers. The quarterback is a really good player; they've got two slots that can play. They have explosives on that side of the ball. Defensively up front they create havoc. ... We've seen all kinds of different looks. Coach Henson has been there a while; he's a defensive guy. He's going to do whatever it takes to give them an opportunity to be successful."

The Coyotes are back home for Homecoming and a game against Sterling at 5 p.m. Oct. 25 on Gene Bissell Field at JRI Hospitality Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex.

RICE:&nbsp;“Honestly, it’s just a brotherhood. We kind of feel like everything we’re doing on the field is for each other because we do everything for each other off the field. It’s easy to relate.”

RICE:&nbsp;“I wouldn’t know what it’s like to not be around the guys. Whatever they say, they say. I just enjoy being around those guys when I’m not at home. This is my second home. I love playing football. We all love playing football, so it’s just natural energy being spread around.”

Q:&nbsp;What has it been like emotionally? How have you gotten through that?

RICE:&nbsp;“Like I said, the best thing for me is to be around the guys. I got leaders in each room, even if it’s on defense to help me on and off the field. No matter what the record is, no matter who you’re playing, teams come ready to play. We’re in the NFL, so you can’t look over anybody and (you) gotta bring your ‘A’ game.”

The Southeast of Saline football team continues to steamroll its schedule following a 52-16 beatdown of the Hillsboro Trojans last week that moved the needle to 6-0 for a sixth straight season.

It was a slower-than-usual start for the Trojans, but Southeast picked things up in the second half, cruising for another comfortable win.

“Hillsboro presented some problems for us,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “They’re a good football team with a lot of athletes, and they played good football, but I thought our kids came out and got better again last week.”

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, it's getting to be crunch time in district play, and tonight, SES can put themselves on the doorstep of another district title when they travel to Halstead to slay the Dragons.

At 0-2 in district play, Halstead and Lyons are already out of the running in District 6, leaving SES (2-0), Ellsworth (2-1), and Hillsboro (2-1) as the three still in striking distance.

While the Trojans certainly have grander aspirations, a district title is the first step on the long path to a state title defense, and the next step of that requires a win over Halstead this evening.

The Dragons have not looked like their teams of old, falling to 1-5 with their lone win of the year coming over the 1-5 Nickerson Panthers.

Despite those struggles, Southeast is not looking past its week seven opponent, especially in a place that has not always been so friendly to the purple and white.

“Halstead has played a tough schedule, and I think as we’ve watched film on them, they’ve gotten better,” Gebhardt said. “We also need to get better and we need to continue to improve this week.”

Southeast may be a bit short-handed in this contest, but will receive no sympathy from a Dragon squad desperate to save their season.

“Every time we play Halstead, they’re physical,” he said. “We’ll have to match that. They run the football well but I think our speed will present problems for them. We need to take care of the football, play good, aggressive defense, and play well on special teams.”

The Sacred Heart football team handled their business with Bennington in week six and now find themselves on a four-game winning streak for the first time since 2013.

It’s been smooth sailing for the Knights since week two, including three crucial wins in district play that should set them up for a winner-take-all district title match against Republic County in week eight.

Before that, however, the Knights will need to win another game that they will be heavily favored in when they host Herington on Friday night.

Like Bennington, the Railers' struggles have been colossal, dropping 17 straight dating back to 2023, including a week eight game to the Bulldogs last season.

The Railer defense is allowing 52 points per game on average, while their offense has put up just 12 points per game.

This should be another opportunity for playmakers like Maddox Wells, Noah Hines, and a recovering Dom Matteucci to stuff the stat sheet and give themselves a shot at a district title in one weeks time.

For many on the outside looking in, it can be easy to miss just how much the Salina South football team has improved this season.

In a flipped schedule, the Cougars have played the same six opponents to open the season. That murderers' row of Salina Central, Maize South, Derby, Hutch, Valley Center, and Goddard has a combined record of 25-11 entering week seven.

Despite all that, the Cougars have improved their results against those teams by a combined 173 total points, including three tight one-score losses.

Now, the Cougars turn their attention to a team they beat handily last season, and an opportunity to pick up a crucial first win of the season as they welcome in the Campus Colts.

Campus has struggled again this year, extending its losing streak to 17 games dating back to 2023.

The last time the Colts had a winning season was back in 2018, and the last time they did it in back-to-back years was in 2005-06.

For South, not only is this an opportunity to pick up a win, but a chance to do it in style with a high-powered offense that’s had no trouble putting points on the board this season.

🏈 Cougars welcome in Campus seeking first win of season

&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f67821e7-7421-49d9-b353-f84e6d95250a?elinkdata=30937">Jordan Murdock</a> is not taking his new job title for granted.

He was named Kansas Wesleyan's basketball coach in March after a one-season stint as an assistant coach at Division II Pittsburg State. It was little more than a brief hiatus after spending the previous four seasons as the assistant at KWU.

"It feels great, it feels amazing, its familiarity," Murdock said Thursday during the Kansas Conference's online media day. "It's all there; all the community members that welcomed me back and it feels fun to be back here in Salina. I'm just ready to get it going."

Murdock is keenly aware of the plethora of responsibilities that accompany the change.

"(Familiarity) has made the transition even better moving into this spot," he said. "Obviously, it's a lot different than being an assistant coach. We all know what comes with that."

The Coyotes were ninth in the KCAC coaches' preseason poll and eighth in the media poll taken Thursday.

The presence of a handful of returning veterans - <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ccb3d652-3936-4523-b181-72696b452a84?elinkdata=30937">Gabe Phillips</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f174bff1-4740-4e73-bffa-831f11df402a?elinkdata=30937">Evens Appolon</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/cc60c07e-d08b-4638-8bda-5f685aa07221?elinkdata=30937">Aiden Leckband</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5edc5ed5-0f62-4df8-96e1-58ef161b6075?elinkdata=30937">Stefan Spray</a> - have made life easier for Murdock.

"The group that's returning has been doing a good job," he said. "They've done a good job upholding the culture that we want to set. These guys have been here; they've won at a high level before. We expect them to be leaders, and they've stepped up in that regard."

Murdock said Phillips, a senior guard/forward and four-year player, has stepped up in the beginning.

"He can play a little bit of every position, he can guard everything," he said. "He's one that I'm really excited for. Started out in our development program and he's continued to get better."

Appolon, a 6-foot-9 post, is the lone returning starter. He averaged 8.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks a year ago.

"Evens is a guy that we're going to need this year," Murdock said. "He's been doing a really good job adjusting to the new things that we're bringing in as far as our new players and our system."

Leckband and Spray were key reserves in 2024-25 - Leckband in the backcourt and the 6-7 Spray inside.

Murdock signed several newcomers to reinforce the roster.

"I'm excited for our new guys," he said. 🏀 Murdock eager to lead Coyotes in first season as head coach

In a battle of two unbeaten teams in the AVCTL - Division Two, the Andover Trojans beat Salina Central 48-21 in Salina on Thursday night.

Central started with the ball, and the first snap of the game went over the head of the Mustangs quarterback Griffin Hall. The Mustangs were well behind the chains and went three-and-out on their first possession.

The Trojans of Andover are a run-heavy team, and they stuck to their script on Thursday night. After forcing a quick punt, the Trojans ran their flexbone offense and got in the endzone on a three-yard rushing touchdown by their quarterback Will Quinn. It was the first of three rushing touchdowns on the night for Quinn. Andover led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In second-quarter action, Andover threw the ball, something they rarely do, and completed it for a 32-yard gain. The Trojans had goal-to-go from the one-yard line, and Quinn, the QB, sneaked it in to give Andover a 14-0 lead.

Salina Central quickly responded, as the Mustangs converted on a crucial fourth and five at the Trojans' 24-yard line. On the very next play, Hall, the junior quarterback, kept the ball himself on a designed quarterback run, and the Mustangs trimmed the lead to 14-7 with 6:06 to go in the half.

Andover drove down the field, but the Mustangs' defense rose up near the goal line on a crucial third and goal from the three-yard line. The Trojans lined up for a 20-yard field goal. The snap was bad and went through the hands of the holder, Barrett Hill. Smartly, Hill tracked the ball down and threw it to the endzone, where the Mustangs were then called for pass interference in the endzone. After the penalty, on fourth and goal from the one, Quinn snuck in for his third rushing touchdown of the half, and the Trojans led 21-7 at the half.

Possessions were at a premium in this game, so to begin the second half, Salina Central started it off with some trickery. The Mustangs began the half with an onside kick by kicker Elijah Duxler, and the Mustangs recovered the ball at the Andover 49-yard line. After a fourth-down conversion on the drive, Central scored on a 33-yard touchdown connection between Hall and Abram Owings. It was 21-14 Trojans, with 8:56 to go in the third quarter.

The teams then began to go back and forth, trading quick scores. Central’s score was a two-yard run by senior running back Cooper Reves. Andover led 35-21 at the end of the third quarter.

In fourth-quarter action, the Mustangs moved the ball down the field but turned it over on downs twice, which in essence let Andover drain the clock with their powerful and punishing run game. Andover tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth, including one with minimal time left, to win 48-21 over the Salina Central Mustangs.

Central loses its first game of the season on Senior Night and drops to 6-1 on the season. The Mustangs are at Goddard High School next Friday night.

Andover improved to 5-2 on the season and clinched at least a share of the AVCTL - Division Two league title. The Trojans play at Andover Central next week.

After forcing a quick punt, the Trojans ran their flexbone offense and got in the endzone on a three-yard rushing touchdown by their quarterback Will Quinn. It was the first of three rushing touchdowns on the night for Quinn. Andover led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.In second-quarter action, Andover threw the ball, something they rarely do, and completed it for a 32-yard gain. The Trojans had goal-to-go from the one-yard line, and Quinn, the QB, sneaked it in to give Andover a 14-0 lead.Salina Central quickly responded, as the Mustangs converted on a crucial fourth and five at the Trojans' 24-yard line. On the very next play, Hall, the junior quarterback, kept the ball himself on a designed quarterback run, and the Mustangs trimmed the lead to 14-7 with 6:06 to go in the half.Andover drove down the field, but the Mustangs' defense rose up near the goal line on a crucial third and goal from the three-yard line. The Trojans lined up for a 20-yard field goal. The snap was bad and went through the hands of the holder, Barrett Hill. Smartly, Hill tracked the ball down and threw it to the endzone, where the Mustangs were then called for pass interference in the endzone. After the penalty, on fourth and goal from the one, Quinn snuck in for his third rushing touchdown of the half, and the Trojans led 21-7 at the half.Possessions were at a premium in this game, so to begin the second half, Salina Central started it off with some trickery. The Mustangs began the half with an onside kick by kicker Elijah Duxler, and the Mustangs recovered the ball at the Andover 49-yard line. After a fourth-down conversion on the drive, Central scored on a 33-yard touchdown connection between Hall and Abram Owings. It was 21-14 Trojans, with 8:56 to go in the third quarter.The teams then began to go back and forth, trading quick scores. Central’s score was a two-yard run by senior running back Cooper Reves. Andover led 35-21 at the end of the third quarter.In fourth-quarter action, the Mustangs moved the ball down the field but turned it over on downs twice, which in essence let Andover drain the clock with their powerful and punishing run game. Andover tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth, including one with minimal time left, to win 48-21 over the Salina Central Mustangs.Central loses its first game of the season on Senior Night and drops to 6-1 on the season. The Mustangs are at Goddard High School next Friday night.Andover improved to 5-2 on the season and clinched at least a share of the AVCTL - Division Two league title.
