You know, that and fourth-down stops (and) big special teams plays, right? Those kind – those seem to tip the game in your favor so the more of those (that) we can get, the better.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s the process of keeping the guys who won’t play on Sunday sharp for the playoffs?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“The first PowerPoint that I put up on Tuesday was, ‘Do Not Lose Your Edge.’ We’ve went two-and-a-half months of offseason work. We went, whatever it’s been, five-and-a-half months since July of all this work to get to this point. Why would we backoff, why would we lose our edge? I’m talking about it in preparation and how the guys practice, what they might do with their bodies physically, rest, all those things. That was an emphasis at the beginning. We’ve also challenged our guys – look, depending on where this all goes and we have this Week 18 to figure out who the playoff team – there’s a chance we play this team (Denver Broncos) again, so if I’m sitting there listening to all the information about Denver’s offense, I want to accumulate that for – you know, to be ready for this – not only this game but in the chance that we end up playing them again.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s the line when you’re trying to give the Broncos your best but you’re also resting your starters?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“That’s the head coach’s – you have to go back to (Head Coach) Andy (Reid), I mean, he makes that decision. Listen, we’re in our meetings with everybody getting ready to play against Denver’s offense – all hands-on deck. Getting – Chris (Jones) may be a little bit different because of the injury he’s dealing with and all those guys, to a man, are working that way in the meetings that we’ve had, in these walkthroughs and now getting ready to have another practice. That’s not going to change and it’s a really good point – we’re going to get their best. It’s not – they’re not experimenting with getting ready for the future or anything. They’re getting ready for a playoff run, so whoever we put out there has to play their best.”

REID:&nbsp;“First of all, I have a lot of respect for him. I think he’s a good football player. I think he has a good feel for this offense, whether he’s developed it or had some of this stuff prior to coming here, he’s got a good feel. He deserves an opportunity to get in there and play, and at the same time it gives Pat (Patrick Mahomes) time to work on certain things that he’ll do during the practices.”

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, Carson (Steele) has done a nice job. We’ve asked him to play fullback and special teams, two of the things that he didn’t do, and he’s really developed into a pretty good fullback in there. We want to stay sharp mentally and physically and then that’s our responsibility to do that. How we manage the time, I make sure I do that practice-wise and then the guys go out – players and coaches – and work on that. Keeping themselves in the right timing the right way.”

Q: Does the speed of practice change at all?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, it does a little bit, yes. You’d see that more next weekend.”

Q: Will D.J. Humphries play left tackle this Sunday?

Q: Are there any coaches on staff you feel warrant interviews for head coaching jobs?

REID:&nbsp;“You could take all of the coordinators there and put them right in that mix for sure. Both of them are – offensive and defensive guys are phenomenal, (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Dave) Toub does a great job. I know the two names that normally come up are the offensive and defensive coordinators. Both of those two are – warrant that, yeah, for sure.”

Q: Will you treat this game like a preseason game where you play certain players only for a limited amount of time?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, well you get two elevations, that’s all, so it’s hard to do all of that. I mean, the rosters are small now where you have to play guys and that’s how it goes. I mean, if somebody wants to start messing with it then there’s not a whole lot of messing going on. I’m sure that’s for a reason, so guys play, that’s how it goes.”

Player Selections Announced for the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Javon Small hit the go-ahead free throw with 1.8 seconds remaining, and short-handed West Virginia held on after blowing an 18-point second-half lead to beat seventh-ranked Kansas 62-61 in an intense Big 12 opener for both teams Tuesday.

Eduardo Andre had 15 points and Small finished with 13 for the Mountaineers (10-2, 1-0), who built a 38-20 lead despite missing two of their three leading scorers to injuries, only to watch Kansas (9-3, 0-1) use a 15-2 run to get back in the game.

Zeke Mayo, who led the Jayhawks with 27 points, converted a three-point play to tie the game 61-all with 16 seconds left. Small was fouled by Kansas freshman Flory Bidunga at the other end and made the second of two free throws, and KJ Adams missed a contested shot as time expired that would have sent the game to overtime.

It was the first conference-opening loss for Kansas since Jan. 8, 1991, and the first win for the Mountaineers in 12 tries in Allen Fieldhouse. They had lost six of their last seven games to the Jayhawks.

West Virginia played its fourth game without star forward Tucker DeVries and also was missing big man Amani Hansberry to an ankle injury. But the Mountaineers committed just six turnovers while never getting rattled by the noise in the Phog.

Kansas missed 15 of its first 19 shots, digging a hole that it spend the entire game trying to escape. Mayo gave the Jayhawks a chance, going 13 for 13 at the foul line, including several of them in the closing minutes.

Small struggled from the field, going 0 for 6 from the 3-point arc. But he also had 11 rebounds and six assists, and he made the free throw that mattered with 1.8 seconds to go.

Kansas went 19 of 21 from the foul line. West Virginia only attempted six free throws, making four — including the winner.

West Virginia plays Oklahoma State on Saturday. Kansas heads to UCF on Sunday.

(AP) — Longtime coach Jack Hartman and Utah State star Wayne Estes, who was tragically killed while trying to provide help at the site of an auto accident after his final game, are among eight coaches and players who will be posthumously inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame revealed its latest class Tuesday. The date of the induction ceremony has not been announced.

The other members include Dave Meyers, who helped UCLA win the NCAA title in 1973 and ‘75; Duquesne’s Sihugo Green, the first overall pick in the 1956 NBA draft; Lennie Rosenbluth, who led North Carolina to a 32-0 record and then 1957 NCAA title; New Mexico State's Sam Lacey, the fifth overall pick in the 1970 NBA draft; John Rudometkin, the first Southern California player to score more than 1,000 points in two seasons; and Tom Stith of St. Bonaventure, who average 26.5 points for his career.

Hartman, who played football and basketball at Oklahoma State, is perhaps the most high-profile member of the class. He played quarterback in the Canadian Football League after college before turning his attention to coaching, first as an assistant at his alma mater and later at Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College and Southern Illinois.

It was at Kansas State where Hartman made his biggest splash. He followed Tex Winter and Cotton Fitzsimmons in leading the Wildcats to four Elite Eights during 16 seasons, finishing first or second in the Big Eight in 10 of those years.

Hartman retired in 1986 with a 589–279 record. He died in 1998 at the age of 73.

Estes was just 21 when he died on Feb. 8, 1965. The 6-foot-6 forward had just scored 48 points for Utah State against Denver in his final game, pushing him past 2,000 points for his career, when he stopped at the scene of a car accident near campus. Estes was crossing the street when he accidentally touched a downed power line, fatally electrocuting him.

Former K-State coach named to National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/11a32e5d-e3a5-4aeb-9376-631d834e12e6?elinkdata=16889">Matt Middleton</a> was named Kansas Wesleyan's football coach on November 25 following a national search that attracted more than 150 applicants.

Middleton spent the past two seasons as quarterbacks and fullbacks coach at Division II powerhouse Harding (Searcy, Ark.). The Bisons won the 2023 national championship and were 27-2 with Middleton on the staff - 15-0 in 2023.

Before Harding, Middleton served as an assistant at Division I Louisiana Tech and Central Arkansas and Division II Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Arkansas. He has been an offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach at the collegiate level and was head coach at three high schools in Louisiana.

Middleton arrived in Salina earlier this month following Harding's quarterfinal playoff loss. He has been busy putting a staff together and recruiting a plethora of new players - this year's team had 33 seniors.

Middleton discussed why he pursued the position, his expectations and goals for the program and what he wants to accomplish this spring during a question-and-answer session.

Then obviously the backgrounds of Dr. (Matt) Thompson and Ken (Oliver) and Miguel (Paredes) and just looking at the other sports across the board and the success that they've had showed me it is a university that's committed to winning at the highest level.Question: What do you bring to the football program?Middleton: High energy, a passion to be the best and a staff that does things the right way. Our number goal is to honor God first, help create great husbands and dads and then win at a high level. That can be in life, it can be in football but the reality is you have to go compete every day. We want to have a great family atmosphere and relationships that last a lifetime.Question: You've been at KWU a short time but what have you learned so far?Middleton: I've seen the passion others have across campus. Whoever you interact with you see things are done at an extremely high level which is why Kansas Wesleyan has had success and has flourished for as long as it has.Question: You've been an assistant coach at several locations and levels. What's the biggest thing you've learned?Middleton: You learn something wherever you go and whoever you work for. I think you find yourself along the way and all the things you want to take with you. I've work for some good men. Hud Jackson (Southern Arkansas head coach) rubbed off on me as far as being a family man and those things. Working for Paul Simmons (Harding head coach) was a great example of 'we're not going to cut corners, we're going to build it the right way, we're going to honor God first. We're going to hire men to coach with high character, we're going to recruit student athletes with high character. We're going to do it the right way and build it from day one.' There is no instant success.Question: How will your experiences as a high school head coach benefit you at the college level?Middleton: The best thing that ever happened to me was being a head high school coach. Starting your career in college a lot of times you're able to recruit to fit a system. In high school you coach the personnel that you have and you have to adapt. Then also understanding and being more sympathetic and empathetic to young people. One thing about high school is you have no idea what somebody has gone through before they get on the bus or where they're at in their life and what their struggles are. It really showed me that each person has a different personality. Being able to deal with a younger personality and realizing that I coach a lot of kids that play for the love of the game. They aren't getting paid or getting a scholarship to do so.Question: Harding utilizes the ground-heavy flexbone offense. You've said you won't employ it at KWU so what will the offense look like?Middleton: We're going to play with a breakneck tempo, we're going to play extremely fast. We're going to be more of a power-spread offense. We will get under center some but the biggest thing is play with an all-gas, no-brakes mentality. Cause chaos for the opposing defense and always keep them on their heels. There might be games where you see us running 60 or 70 percent of the time then the next week it might be where we throw it more. You always attack what the defense gives you but you've got to be balanced and you've got to be able to adapt.Question: What are your top priorities in the spring semester?Middleton: Recruiting right now. Filling in the gaps of the seniors that we lost and the other people no longer in the program. Make sure they match our vision and what we're trying to do. Then have an extreme, intense offseason program of strength and conditioning and morning workouts to set the stage for what we do want to do in spring practice. I think the most exciting thing for me is to be able to get to spring practice and see what we have and see where we need help. Start building relationships from day one and earning trust. I've got to earn the players trust; they've got to earn mine. I think that's a form of building relationships, going through tough things together. We need to make sure that we have the right people in our program that are going to give us a chance to be successful. People who are great academic students and good football players too. We're not going to babysit anybody.Question: You've hired new offensive and defensive coordinators.
