SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Wichita Wind Surge (13-20) dropped the finale of a six-game series, falling 9-2 to the Springfield Cardinals (22-11) on Sunday night at Route 66 Stadium. Springfield outhit Wichita 9-3 and hit four home runs to claim the series finale.
Caden Kendle and Jaime Ferrer accounted for Wichita's only runs, hitting home runs in the fourth inning. It was Kendle's second Double-A home run and Ferrer's fifth of the season. Marek Houston extended his on-base streak to 26 games despite seeing his 12-game hitting streak come to an end, while Kendle pushed his on-base streak to 19 games. Jaylen Nowlin highlighted the pitching staff with his 15th scoreless relief appearance of the season.
THE RUNDOWN
The Wind Surge threatened in the opening inning, loading the bases with a single and two walks but came away empty.
Springfield took the lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run to left field.
The Cardinals added to their advantage in the third with a two-run home run to straightaway center field, extending the lead to 3-0.
Wichita cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth when Kendle and Ferrer hit home runs. Springfield answered immediately in the bottom half with a two-run homer to push the lead back to 5-2.
The Cardinals added another run in the sixth after a walk and a stolen base set up an RBI single.
Springfield put the game away in the seventh, scoring once on a sacrifice fly before adding a two-run home run to extend the lead to 9-2.
The Wind Surge could not mount a comeback over the final two innings as Springfield secured the series finale.
